Honora Sullivan (nee Callaghan) & John Smith circa 1870-1880

Honora Sullivan (nee Callaghan) & John Smith circa 1870-1880

Classification: Lookup
Surnames: Sullivan, Callaghan, Smith
Looking for any information that maybe found on these people in Toowoomba, there was a child born in Jan of 1880 who survived life for 10 weeks before she left this world in the April of 1880. It is believed from certificates that the mother was born in 1854 Brosna, Kerry, Ireland & John was born 1855 Mudgee NSW.

From what I have gathered so far is that Honorah was possibly the first child born, they moved onto Charleville & Blackall.

I am interested in any information of them whilst living in Toowoomba when they arrived to the suburb where they possibly came from prior to that, I have not located a marriage, it is believed that the marriage was illegitimate. I am also unsure of if the Callaghan name is Mother or Father's surname and if the Sullivan is a surname of one of the parents or a previous marriage at a young age. Honora passed away in the September of 1889 during childbirth in Skeleton Creek, Blackall.

It is also known through newspaper clippings that John Smith was a Groom whilst working with Cobb & Co, whilst in Blackall, I am unsure when he started with Cobb & Co or if he was with the company in Toowoomba.

Any information on these 2 people in that time period would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance
Dee.

HI Dee,
Birth
1880 C1715 Honorah Callaghan mother Honorah Sullivan Callaghan

From the birth it appears the mothers surname is CALLAGHAN and her first two names are Honorah Sullivan. There is no father named so the child appears to be illegitimate.

Death
1880 C531 Honorah Sullivan - Honorah Callaghan ** now Sullivan - born Toowoomba aged 10 weeks

So it appears Honorah either married or begin living with a SULLIVAN as if married, between the birth and death, but Honora was a CALLAGHAN.

It appears Honora was CALLAGHAN and was with a SULLIVAN then met/lived with John SMITH.
QLD INDEXES have assisted shipping. Are you sure Honora was born 1854?

Seems like most births had double rego's

1883 C1143 Emily Callaghan Honorah Callaghan
1885 C1422 Harriet Callaghan Honorah Sullivan Callaghan
1887 C1661 John Patrick Callaghan Honora Callaghan

Any idea what happened to all the children?

Sarah is my Grandmother she joined the circus, at the age of 9. I never knew her, she had a multitude of children. The 3 remaining kids ended up in an orphanage I am currently waiting for the documents, more concerned with the time in Toowomba and before hand Honora was 36 at time of death in 1889, if that is to be believed so would put birth to 1854, she apparently spent 16 years in qld. So not sure if she travelled up from Nsw arrived with parents or not or disembarked from Ireland to QLD, not knowing parents names makes it hard.

I have just looked back on the birth for Sarah it states that they were married on the 2 May 1880,

even though the marriage for Sarah Smith that her father was John Smith a Carrier at the time born Mudgee, NSW and he was informant also to the birth of Sarah, the marriage & death records for Sarah state her mother is Annie Bruce marriage states the mother was deceased at time of death.

The only reason I am going with Honora Sullivan being the mother is that her death coincides with the story told by Sarah to one of her children. Sarah never went back to see her family once she joined the circus as an actress after her mother passed away.
