That is good news. Sorry, I should have also said that it is dependant on their access policy. Strangely they do not have the full policy posted on their website.

Most states require proof of a close relationship, authority from one of the parties involved, or proof of legal requirements for access to documents, otherwise there is no point to having a closed period!

Thanks, I had in the meantime contacted the BMD registry in the NT, and now find that with proof of identify (birth cert and driving license) that I can obtain a copy of the record (just in case anyone else would like to know this)

Hi Susan,

Indexes for that time period in the NT are not publicly available. They have a 60 year privacy closure on marriage records so you would be able to apply to the registry for a search in 2017 for a marriage in 1956, or 2020 for the whole time period.

As far as I know the epitaph "their name liveth for evermorë'' is only used by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, C.W.G.C
So what you describe should be the formal War Graves Memorial in Darwin.

I found info of a May CRAWFORD who is apparently a daughter of Linsey CRAWFORD from a few member trees. Her Mother's name is only listed as "Jennie".

May CRAWFORD was apparently born in 1889 Victoria River Downs, Northern Territory, Australia.

I wonder if she is aboriginal? Perhaps she is a sister to Nellie Crawford?

The initials of Elizabeth's Father "G". J. F. CRAWFORD I suspect have been transcribed incorrectly and should read "E" J. F. CRAWFORD.
Although her age is "out" at the time of her marriage and death I suspect she was Edward James Frederick CRAWFORD's daughter Ann Eliza, born ENGLAND to Edward James Frederick CRAWFORD and first wife Mary Anne SCOTT.

The death of Mr. Lindsay Crawford, an old resident of the Northern Territory, was recently reported in "The Register." Mr. Lindsay succumbed to an attack of dysentery on Sturt's Plain, his illness being brought on through exposure whilst in charge of the overland telegraph line construction and maintenance party. The body was interred on the edge of the plain, the burial party having the use of nothing better than tomahawks to dig the grave. The deceased was a son of Mr. E. J. F. Crawford, a brewer and old resident of South Australia. His Mother was Miss Flaxman, sister of Mr. Flaxman, who was a partner of the late Mr. G. Fife Angas, the founder of this State.

Yeah, I suspect that Helen and Ella are the same person.

I don't have any info on Nellie's father apart from his name was Lindsey Crawford and he was a Maori. And that info was only from this page http://www.territorystories.nt.gov.au/handle/10070/227683 so I don't have a verified source.

Darwin Library is a bit far away for me, but if you are able to recall the book titles and authors I might be able to source a copy locally.

Hi, I am researching my greatgrand mother who's name is May Crawford. It is believed that Nellie Flynn nee Crawford had the same father although I have not been able to find any evidence. Looking at the names of Nellie's children I noticed that you were unable to establish who Helen was. I believe that Ella was shorted from Helen. There is a book which I read in Darwin (not sure of the name with an early photograph of the Flynn Family at Rum Jungle during the 1920's. I photograph was provided by Nellie Flynn. In the photograph are Tom, Alice, Maggy (Margaret) Nellie, Tom (Snr) Francis and in the front is May and Ella (Helen). I also came across and earlier Book with a picture of Nellie by herself. There is a lot of information in the Darwin City Library about Nellie as well as photographs as she was a well know person.

I found a heap of electoral rolls for Ellen Ah Mat. The earliest one has Jaffa Michael Ah Mat listed along with as being in Katherine. I'm guessing this could be her husband.

yes most of that is correct and yes i know trisha scrutton,
i think there may be a mix up between doreen and alice as i too found out that doreen passed away age 3 whick makes me think that she maybe the child that passed away from posioning. As for aunty ella also known as ellen flynn ithink she married again as her son william is an ahmatt so he most likley took his fathers surname. but i will have to get back to you on that one.

Ella's kids Claudette is currently living in QLD somewhere ,
William known as billy was a drunk and has since passed away at parap & Dorothy im not sure where she is i will have to ask my mother as i dont think anyone in the family has anythjing to do with them.

My research has uncovered that Doreen Flynn born abt 1906 died at the age of 3 in 1909.

Alice Flynn married Charles Peterson and passed away in 1962

May Flynn married Ronald Rose but died the following year (1938). She also had a still born baby but I don't know if May died during the birth or not.

I don't have anything further on Jean and Helen.

Do you know where the "AhMat" name came from as Ellen married Joe Marlow? I didn't link this before because of the surname but Ellen AhMatt and her kids Claudette, William & Dorothy were evacuated to Gladstone SA during WWII with my Grandmother, Mother and Uncles (the Tybells)

I'm also after any info on one of their daughters (my grandmother) Margaret (Maggie) Flynn. She was married to John (Jack) Tybell, who was a circus performer. John's previous wife was Ada Ashton from the Ashton Circus.

Thank you for the information below it confirms other sources and seemd to link as to why Nalda is alone in 1977 on the Electoral Roll. I am kicking myself for not trying Graig as it is an obvious transciption error, even if it is not a forename as far as I know? Do you know what "oprtr" means as a job? Some sort of porter?

It was our Craig you found on the UK Incoming Passenger lists and it reminds me of where I got his DOB. This disagrees with the death record, and some family members recollections, but if he was living alone and not well it may have been difficult to confirm his age?

I may have found Nalda on the white pages and I have left a message, however her house is being sold so I am a little concerned she may no longer be with us, though, if it is the right N F Horsburgh, she appears to have a son. I have found that is separations are involved sometime the family do not want to know about that branch, but then again sometimes they do?

I being new to the system have also posted on the Horsburgh and the message boards for other regions they lived in with some success and I wonder if you know if it is possble to link message threads? Thinking about it I should have put a note to that effect in the original post.

I am trying to contact relatives or people who knew my long lost second cousin Craig Horsburgh who after a brief stay in Jamaica in the late 1950's emigrated to Australia and only made one trip back in the 1960's we think and died young about 1980.

He appears to have lived at Flat 2, 7 Gilbert Street, Fannie Bay, Ludmilla, Northern Territory, Austrlalia according to the electoral register for 1968 (he is described as a Watersider) and he is living with Nalda Florence Horburgh (a Store Assistant) which we presume is one of his wives. We think he married twice.

He may also have lived at 1/25 Ellis Street, Stones Corner, 4120 Buranda, Griffith, Queensland Australia (where he is described as a machine operator) and he is still living with Nalda who is a "H D - Home Duties" which I presume is housewife?

Deeess has been kind enough to point out I missed that Nalda Horsburgh appears to be living alone in the 1977 census in 39 Amherst Road, Midland 6056, Swan, Western Australia still "H D" , which might suggest she has other means of support and Craig may be working away or separated, or he may have died?

I can't find her on the 1980 census even with a different surname?

We would love to hear from anyone related to or who knew him, to learn more of his life in Australia and Jamaica and anywhere else.

His Parents were Edward Horsburgh and Edith Smith.

Craig appears to have returned to the NORTHERN TERRITORY at some time; transcribed as "Graig" on the 1980 electoral roll;

If they were a married couple perhaps Nalda and Craig parted company, he appears to be alone in 1980.

In my quest to try to find out why my father chose to spend his military leave time in Adelaide rather than Darwin (he was stationed at Fenton Field May 1943), it was suggested to me that Darwin was hit pretty hard by earlier Japanese air raids with significant damage and many civilians evacuating the city by 1943. Thus, the city was pretty much a "shell" of what it had been.

Being in the Air Corps, it probably wouldn't have been very difficult to hitch a ride on a cargo plane and be across the continent in a few hours. I just found it odd that a man with a 2 or 3 day pass would choose to travel this far.

How much was Darwin deminished by those raids? How big a city had it been previous? Any truth to my earlier assumption? Obviously, I'll never really know why - just speculation.

I've now had 2 individuals verify the photos were of Adelaide at the Torrens River through the river bridge and church in the background shots.

I can't explain why he was there when he was stationed at Fenton Field in Dawin, but at least I now know location.

"Their Name Liveth For Evermore" is but part of the full quote from Ecclesiasticus 44:14, which says:- "Their Bodies Are Buried In Peace, Their Name Liveth For Evermore."

At the suggestion of Rudyard Kipling, the latter part is inscribed at most war cemeteries throughout the world where British and Commonwealth Servicemen are buried.

If you Google/Images with "Their Name Liveth For Evermore Australia " many images come up. You may see an image that is similar to your photo.

My father was a sheetmetal worker on the ground crew in the 380th Bomb Group, 530th Squadron that came to Australia in 1943 before moving on to New Guinea and the Philippines. I think his group landed in Darwin and was stationed around there for a short while before moving.

Looking at some of his old photos he sent back home to his parents, I found several taken while he was on leave, but the pictures had no mention of the actual location. I don't know if it was just a slip on his part - or if it was not allowed by military censors.

The photos seem to be taken in a park or memorial site. There is a large pond or lake (some kind of body of water) with a walk bridge over the water. One photo shows him standing next to a monument inscribed "their name liveth for evermore".
I was wondering if this possibly was in Darwin?
