Andrew
Thankyou for the documents they are fascinating. The birth extract for Enoch particularly. My French is "high school" standard so I can only make out bits of it but it is what it is. I am a member of a Family Historical Society, so I am going to enquire if they have someone who could translate the document. If so I will send you an English extract. The 2 letters are also interesting. I can make out a fair bit of them so I will go through them and send you a transcript of what I can decipher. Re why Edward was in France, a lady by the name of Rhonda Shallala (died in 2008) did an enormous amount of research on the Williams family, even going overseas. A lot of what is found on Ancestry is from her work although she sometimes doesn't get the credit. Anyway, she discovered that Edward and family moved to France to work on the Railway Tunnel from Marseille to Avignon, which would make sense , he being a miner. She noted that a son Enoch was born on 5 March 1846 in the Commune of Avignon, France, which your document supports.
I will stay in touch
Paul
