I have no idea how or when Francis ended up in Tasmania. He has 3 stated birthplaces but I don't know his story.

Mildred's family was Tasmanian and her father was a stud sheep overseer who worked for the Gatenby family. The family moved to NSW and worked on a property owned by N A Gatenby called Jemalong (near Forbes)for a number of years, during which Mildred was born. The family returned to Tasmania around 1905 and took up land at Turners Marsh. Mildred grew up at Turners Marsh and went to work for the Taylor family (also of Turners Marsh). It was at the Taylor family property where she worked that she met Francis James Smith.
