Hi Marg,
I am also researching Eliza McLean (Baker) wife of David mcLean.
I am a grandson of Leila M, the twin sister of Gladys B, both born in 1900. Leila died in 1929 leaving a husband and three children (plus another deceased)
I am also interested in the father of Leila and Gladys. I suspect it was David McLean as Gladys's death certificate listed him as father, which of course is not definite proof. Leila was taken in by Albert and Jane Shaw. David was quite a few years older than Eliza and roughly the same age as Albert Shaw which suggests that they may have known each other. All quite circumstantial but interesting.
I have surmised that maybe Eliza's parents opposed any marriage because of the age difference but relented after a few years. I think there was another child born to Eliza before she and David McLean were married.
What I am also intersted in is whether any of the later born children are still alive as I think Les was born after the first born children of both Leila and Gladys.
I'd love to hear if you have any information to share.
Thanks in advance,
regards,
Ross

Hi Ross,

Thank you so much for your email. My husband Ron, is the son of Marjorie McLean, sister to Leila & Gladys.

We are both amazed, as we had no idea that Glad had a twin.
What a shame that Leila died so young. Do you know what she died from?

Ron & I were very fond of Aunty Glad, & ironically & sadly, she passed away on the day of our Wedding, with a heart attack.

We have so many questions, but can't get over the fact that no one ever mentioned Leila. Did she know that she came from such a large family? Was she adopted by the Shaws? I wonder if Glad & she met.

Do you have a photo of Leila? Did you see the photo of Glad on our McLean Tree?

Were the Shaws related to the McLeans or just friends?? I see that Albert married Jane Williams 1892, & they didn't have any children. Was Leila their only child or did they adopt others.

Leila married Harold Garfoot in 1920, & died in 1929. Could we please have some details re Harold,& their children, so as I may add them to our Tree? Do you have a Tree on Ancestry?

So sorry for all the questions, but there are so many things we want to know about Leila & Harold & their family. We would appreciate any photos that you would like to share.

As to your questions about David McLean being the father of Gladys & Leila?? I don't think we will ever know, really.
The twins were born in 1900, Eliza was 20, so not too young to marry then. But she & David didn't marry until 1904, & Raymond was born in 1904, so it makes us think, that he wasn't the twins father, as she would have been free to marry in 1901, when she was 21.....so why wait until 1904.
I think David raised Gladys as his own, but she was considered a Baker.
In the book called Three New England Families, by E.A. Roberts, David McLean is reported as leaving Black Mountain, near Guyra, (his birthplace) around 1903. The book says he married Eliza Baker in 1904, & she already had a daughter, Gladys Baker.
On B.D.M's record for the births of the twins, Father is not listed, it makes us think that the Father didn't want to be known or was denying the fact. Its frustrating isn't it.

There are none of Glad & Leila's siblings still living, but Ron has an older brother, who was raised by David & Eliza McLean, & he may know a bit more. We shall give him a ring & will let you know.

We would love to find out more about the Bakers & Coultons. We recently visited the graves of Henry Baker & Sarah Ann Coulton, at East Maitland Cemetery. Did you know that the Bakers had a Brickworks at Morpeth, we also visited the site, nothing remains, but the locals still tell tales of how prosperous it was.

If you would like to contact us directly our email address is romalypark@yahoo.com.au

Looking forward to hearing from you, & thanks once again for contacting us & telling us about Leila.

Marg Williams

Hello,
I am a descendent of Marjorie McLean, I was just curious to know if there has been any progress on this because it seems very interesting and I would really love to know. I don't understand how Leila would of slipped through family records like that and never of been heard of. This is really quite interesting to read.
Kind regards,
Adam.

Hi Adam,
Not much progress has been made getting to the bottom of this mystery tho not thru want of trying.
Leila was my grandmother who unfortunately died very young so a lot of oral history would have died with her. She was taken in (formal adoption didn't exist in those days) by Albert and Jane Williams leaving her twin Gladys with her mother presumably because it was considered that a single mother could not look after two children. Who the father of Leila and Gladys was is still unknown. The only interesting reference I have found however is from a newspaper report from 1903 or 04 which refers to a maintenance order sought by Eliza Baker in the East Maitand Police Court against Patrick Kelly which got me thinking he must have been the father. Unfortunately court records have been lost and no further reports appeared in the paper.
Another interesting piece of information is that even tho Leila was given up she knew she was a Baker. Her cousin (or uncle) George Baker was a witness at her wedding while my father still remembers visiting the Bakers in Maitland (that would have been in the mid to late 20s).
Hope that fills you in a little bit.
regards,
Ross Garfoot

Hi Mary,

Many thanks for the information re Leila's Obituary, I'm so pleased Gladys & the family stayed in touch with Leila.
Also the information regarding Patrick Kelly being sued for maintenance, adjourned until Friday 3rd July 1903. Unfortunately this information isn't online as yet, so we'll have to wait to find out if Eliza was successfull and received maintenance.
I found a Patrick Kelly married 1904 East Maitland to Bridget Ryan.
Of course we have no way of knowing if this is him.
