Hi Adam,
Not much progress has been made getting to the bottom of this mystery tho not thru want of trying.
Leila was my grandmother who unfortunately died very young so a lot of oral history would have died with her. She was taken in (formal adoption didn't exist in those days) by Albert and Jane Williams leaving her twin Gladys with her mother presumably because it was considered that a single mother could not look after two children. Who the father of Leila and Gladys was is still unknown. The only interesting reference I have found however is from a newspaper report from 1903 or 04 which refers to a maintenance order sought by Eliza Baker in the East Maitand Police Court against Patrick Kelly which got me thinking he must have been the father. Unfortunately court records have been lost and no further reports appeared in the paper.
Another interesting piece of information is that even tho Leila was given up she knew she was a Baker. Her cousin (or uncle) George Baker was a witness at her wedding while my father still remembers visiting the Bakers in Maitland (that would have been in the mid to late 20s).
Hope that fills you in a little bit.
regards,
Ross Garfoot
