If your Alfred is the one who died in 1902 in Sydney, son of Alfred & Maria (reg 7917), then there is a matching birth for him in 1852 to these same parents (see www.bdm.nsw.gov.au). This looks like his death notice:

The Sydney Morning Herald, Monday 11 August 1902
STEEL. -August 10, 1902, at Sydney Hospital, after severe operation, Alfred, eldest son of the late Alfred Steel, of Sydney, aged 50.

His mother's death notice from NLA Trove:
The Sydney Morning Herald, Monday 17 November 1902
STEEL. — November 16, 1902, at her residence, 88 Castlereagh-street, Redfern, Maria widow of Alfred Steel, sen., late of Kent, England, aged 86 years.

His father's death notice from same paper?:
Friday 4 February 1876
STEEL. —February 3, at his residence, 413, Pitt-street, Alfred Steel, sen., aged 66 years.

Alfred jnr had the following aiblings:
Elizabeth M 1847, d. 1924 [did not marry]
Esther 1849, d. 1930 Randwick [as Ester, did not marry]
Matilda 1856, d. ?
Edward 1858, M. Alice M STEPHENS 1897, d. 1935 Newtown

Eldest daughter's death notice:
Thursday 20 February 1879
STEEL. - February 19, at the residence of her grandmother, 340, Macquarie-street South, Elsie Arline, dearly loved daughter of Alfred and Jennie Steel, aged 13 months.

Alfred's eldest son Alfred Geo was a conductor for the Conservatorium of Music and headmaster of the Conservatorium High School. He died of double pneumonia and pleurisy in Feb 1929.

The family are all buried at Rookwood (Anglican & General).

Do you know when Jane Eliza died or if she remarried after Alfred's early death?

Am looking for any information on these 2 people. They are my maternal great grandparents, Jane born around 1855, Alfred born around 1852 & married in Sydney, NSW, Australia in 1877. They may have spent some time on Lord Howe Island. Regards, Lesley Swift (nee Turner/Steel)

As you probably know if you are looking for a living person than these message boards are not the right place.

On the other hand if you are looking for a deceased person may I suggest that this specific board (Lord Howe Island) is also not the right place.

No just that he was based there and was injured and was at the hospital and had been dating a nurse, who we later found out had my Dad Marvin Otis Stinson baby, and that it was supposed to be a girl. This is all the information I have at this time. Thank you for any help in this matter.

I would like it to go all over Aulstralia, I thought that I had to go to the seperate area to get them. I was informed after doing it that I just had to go to the one, but would like it to go all over so to cover the complete nation. My great-grandfather Harold Sherwood loved Lord Howe Island, and would sail his boat (solo) over there from NSW.

His brother, Mark Sherwood, was stationed over there in the early 1900's as a young policeman, returning to NSW after that time (not sure how many years).

Many years ago, Mark's son, who was born on the island, came to visit my grandmother. It would be lovely to catch up again.

I have some lovely B&W photo's from my grandmother, taken by her father on his visits.

Looking for Sister: Marvin Odie Stinson born Kentucky was contacted in the 1940's by the mother. Looking for sister born about 1941-1945. Father was US MARINE based in Australia during WWII. Had a relationship with the mother on base or off base. Of which they had a daughter of this union born. I am looking for my sister from this relationship. My family includes the Wrights who lived on Howe's Island from 1841 to about 1864 and then seem to have returned to Sydney. I would welcome any further information about them.

This island has a long history extending back to before New Zealand and Australia were named and settled countries. Few people live on this island, but those who go way back in history, and later perhaps had descendents who moved to the mainland, left surnames in old records that may interest you.

So let's start the first thread with surnames you know of from this island, and whom may be among your ancestors. Some early guys were whailers.....and later sailed as traiders.
