Re: RUSHFORD's IN OZ!!

Hi Oudie 1

Just saw your post 2000!? My Rushford family possibly came from France ( as De Rochforte/Rochfort, we are still trying to validate this link)to Ireland (County Armagh?)then over to Scotland (Glasgow) region. Common names 1700's (Ireland)James,John,Mary, Jane, William Armstrong (1863 Scotland),William Lithgow Rushford, George Miller Rushford, John Stevenson Rushford, Claude, Louie, Mary (Polly)+++. I am in touch with 2nd and 4th cousins in Scotland, OZ & USA and have met with them recently. I have also contacted another branch of Rushford's in OZ who are origainally from Ireland and I have kept their contact details, it is possible that we are related but no definite links as yet.I don't have their common names with me as I am in Canada at present but I recall Maurice as one of them because of it's decidedly french flavour like some of ours. One member of the Rushford's (Robert)reportedly went to USA in search of gold but never returned.I have more info on our American rellies of which there are many, and their lines if you wish to follow up on this info.
Cheers,
David.R.

Greetings
In reply to your question, regarding my post.
Thomas Byrne and Ann Morrisson had more than the four Children mentioned in my post, ( probably 4 or 5 more)
I would like to find more information on this family, since one of the children is my G.G. Grandfather.
I know that Byrne Families emigrated to Australia (whether related to me or not) A Thomas Byrne and a wife named Ann emigrated to Australia in the 1840's.
Peter

John Charles Darke & John henry Theakston Please Help

Dear Members,

I am posting for the first time so I hope I am following the correct protocol. I need help to find descendants of John Charles Darke - the explorer who died in 1844 - and or his second in command John Henry Theakston. The reason behind this request is:

In 1843 my ggrandfather Sam Harris and his mate Joseph Cummings jumped from a whaling ship at Fowlers Bay, S.A. They trekked overland and down the western coast of Eyre Peninsula. During this trek they took readings of the land they traversed. Eventually they were picked up by a survey ship, the Governor Gawler and taken to Pt Lincoln - where they were thrown into jail for illegal entry (early refugees!!). After giving statements on the fertile land they had encountered - they were released. Based on their accounts John Charles Darke was enlisted to explore the area. His expedition started on August 29, 1844 from Pt Lincoln - by October he had been speared to death - John Henry Theakston was at this side. It is now 170 years since the initial trek - descendants are mounting a retracing of the trek (by motorised vehicles) in October 2013. We would very much like to find descendants of Darke and Theakston in the hope they might join this tribute to a courageous group of young men who opened up this area of Eyre Peninsula ....any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanking everyone in advance for this opportunity.
Regards Karen Kestigian

The WEEKS/DEAYTON marriage announcement was a mistake, he did not marry Clara, he married her sister Emma, and Clara married John William SUMMERS.

Within the past fortnight two weddings, have been solemnised in this district, the first being that of Mr. James Weeks, who was married to Miss Emma Deayton, youngest daughter of the late Mr. Alfred Deayton. The ceremony took place at Burnie.
(Launceston Examiner, 7 May 1900)

"Advocate 23 June 1927
Miss Rhoda Deayton and Miss Effie Tiley, of Victoria, have been spending an enjoyable holiday with Mr. and Mrs. J. King, of ''Mountain Vale." South Riana." (fryerning)

KING-DEAYTON - On 18th April, at Burnie, by the Rev. M. O'Callaghan, John, third son of Thomas King, of Mount Leicester, to Jane Margaret, second daughter of Alfred Denyton, of River Cam.
(Launceston Examiner, 23 April 1888.

Jane Margaret and John KING were living at South Riana in 1928, and Jane had a sister Clara DEAYTON.

I cannot see a birth for Rhoda in Tasmania, but it does seem likely that she was the daughter of Jane's sister Clara.

Debra
I think Clara died in 1904 and John SUMMERS remarried/lived with an Alice CLARKE.

Are any of these names familiar?

Late Mr. J. W. Summers

The funeral of the late Mr. John William Summers, who died at his home, Deep Creek, on Sunday morning, took place at the new public cemetery on Monday afternoon. There was a large attendance, with many floral tributes, including several from Victoria.

Mr. Summers was a native of Burnie, and lived there until about 12 years ago, when he removed to Deep Creek. He was one of the early pioneers of Burnie, and travelled between Burnie and Waratah with horse teams.

He married Miss A. Clarke, who survives him, and leaves a family of six sons - Fred (Melbourne), Cyril (Melbourne), Allan, Jack, Cliff and Tom (Wynyard), and seven daughters, Rhoda (Melbourne), Linda (Mrs. A. Smart. Melbourne), Florrie (Mrs. B. Lay, Melbourne), Irene (Victoria), Elvie (Melbourne), Eileen and Leila (Wynyard).

Rev. Father T. Murphy officiated at St. Brigid's Church, and the graveside. The pallbearers were four nephews, Keith Ward, Ken Summers, Bill Summers, and Vic. Summers.

Debra

I appreciate your help.

To simplify things, I was really just wondering if anyone on the list can do a LOOKUP on the BDM's, Tasmania for a birth of Rhoda Teresa DEAYTON. It's the obvious first step. I've checked the Victorian indexes.

Thanks so much Rhonda for taking the time. I've seen all of those articles and the "quiet wedding" to James Weeks is most intriguing and the Under 14 drawing award to Rhoda Deayton.

Rhoda and Effie's relationship and Rhoda's roots are still a big mystery to me!

I haven't done any searching for variations of the name yet and I'm predicting all sorts of spellings e.g. Daton, Dayton, Deighton, Dauton. Perhaps I should post my enquiry on the DEIGHTON surname board.

I've checked PROV for immigration and found a "Miss DEAYTON" age 24 departing Victoria for Tasmania in 1898. (Maybe this is the one who married James WEEKS but it's anyone's guess.) I've also found "George DEAYTON" arriving Unassisted in Victoria in 1866 then departing straight away for Brisbane via Sydney in Jul 1866. In fact he's the only Deayton that arrived in Victoria.

Perhaps my next step should be to check the Tasmanian Convict records for a DEAYTON".

I've just found an entry on Tasmania Archives - Date: 2 Dec 1872 ref # 1389 - Granting of a Public House Licence for the Ferry House Inn on the River Cam- Alfred Deayton - might be a connection but I'm clutching at straws!

Thank you for your help,

Effie's parents are:
James Panther TILEY 1881 – 1960 (son of Edmund TILEY and Louisa PANTHER) and Mary Johnston 1877 – 1922 (daughter of Walter JOHNSTON and Mary Jane PADFIELD) and they all came from Raglan and Beaufort in Victoria.

I don't know if Effie and Rhoda are related, but I DO know they were living together and they may have just been friends holidaying in Tasmania together. There is a Rhoda DEAYTON living in Ulverstone in 1919 and 1922 but no other Deaytons with her and no Effie Tiley with her either as Effie wasn't 21 and on the roll yet. The earliest I can find them living together are in 1931 in Smith Street, Fitzroy, Victoria occupations both Cooks.

I notice from Ancestry and Trove searches that there are lots of Deaytons in Tassie. e.g. Emu Bay, Table Cape, Cam, Hobart, Burnie...

I'm also wondering if Rhoda came out from England because:
1. there is a war record for Albert Ernest DEAYTON on the naa.gov.au whose next of kin is "RhoNa Deayton" and it says he was born in Parkstone, England (RhoNa could be misspelling of RhoDa)
2. Effie and Luigi visited England in 1957 and slim chance maybe they were visiting Rhoda's family (VERY slim chance - it may have just been a holiday).

I'm not sure about your suggestion "...Interesting? -
Hannah Rhoda TILEY b. 1881 SORELL
to James TILEY and Mary Ann BLOOMFIELD...". Rhoda was a very popular name around that time and I have no Tiley/Bloomfield connection. (but coincidentally have a Bloomfield/Broomfield connection to my Prince family. Hoping for a lookup on the Tasmanian BDM's for birth of Rhoda Teresa DEAYTON to a mother Clara (possibly unmarried) or a marriage of Rhoda Teresa ? to a DEAYTON.

Looking for parents and birth record of Rhoda Teresa DEAYTON born c 1895 died Mar 1972 (buried 22 Mar 1972 at Fawkner, Victoria). Mother's name on death index is listed as Clara. Also any marriage (though she may have been a spinster) and issue.

Also trying to find the relationship between Rhoda and my cousin Effie TILEY. Rhoda and Effie holidayed together in June 1927 in South Riana, Tasmania. Rhoda and Effie also lived at the same address for many years in East Melbourne, Victoria, until Effie married Luigino ZENARO (an Italian immigrant who arrived in 1952). Effie and Luigi moved to Brunswick. Rhoda, Effie and Luigino are all buried together in the same plot at Fawkner, Victoria. I remember these 3 people when I met them as a child in the 50's/60's

Harry's father lived in Tierworker area and Harry was Garrigan as a boy. Bridget also came with her cousins in 1860, her father was John,Dec'd and her mother Alice, she was from Currans.
I hope you can follow this, if you find a connection you are also related to my family and Simon's cousin's descendants in Australia,a very large tribe now. I would like to hear from anyone who makes a connection to us. Pammoreilly@live.com

Birth and travel records Jane Alexander

I am looking for either birth record and immigration/travel record to Australia for Jane Alexander who married William Newlands on 22 Feb 1854 in Sydney. Arrival in Australia most likely occurred late 1830's or during 1840's but could have occurred anywhere between 1831 and Feb 1854. Information known about Jane Alexander:
• She was born in Ireland.
• She died in Toowoomba Qld 9 Dec 1891.
• Qld BDM lists her death record as born Ireland aged 60 years which would put her birth date between the 10 Dec 1830 and 9 Dec 1831. However her gravestone in Toowoomba shows her age as 55 which would put her birth date between 10 Dec 1835 and 9 Dec 1836. So her birth could have occurred anywhere between Dec 1830 and Dec 1836.
• Based on birth records for her children it is more likely that her birth date is closer to 1831. The records for each child give varying ages but most indicate she was born closer to 1831.
• Possible areas of Ireland where she was born/lived are County Tyrone and Clonmel.
• Her marriage record was signed using her X mark so she could not write and possibly could not read also.

Further information regarding William Newlands and Jane Alexander that may assist:
William Newlands was born 1820 Glasgow Scotland, migrated to Australia arriving on the 9 Dec 1837 on the Portland. He was a tailor in Sydney but also was a publican at various times in Sydney from 1849 through to about 1860. William and Jane had eight children (6 girls and 2 boys) five born in Sydney and three born in Toowoomba after they moved there around 1866. Both boys died as infants at approximately 6 weeks and the last child Ada Florence was born after William's death. Jane was also step mother to five other children from William's first marriage to Catherine Golden who died on the 20 Feb 1854. William Newlands died in Toowoomba 20 Jul 1869.

Hi Richard

The National Archives Australia passenger index up to 1950 did not name Eric and family. (I did not check for an odd spelling of the surname!)
A YEOWARD surname search though at NAA brought up another son born 1928 in Red Deer, and he joined the Navy in 1946. So the timeframe is from 1928 up to 1940.
Passenger records in other States generally are only up to the 1922 or 1923.
AncestorsOnboard/FindMyPast once had a free index up to 1960 but I have not been able to access it lately. Maybe one needs to logon nowadays.

Rhonda

Unfortunaltely this is not the complete database but an extraction of those Nuns born in Ireland. It does not seem to include nuns who were born in Australia and died there or anywhere else. I downloaded the database some years ago and did a spot check - many of my family members who became nuns were born in NSW and entered in NSW and died in various places on missions or in NSW, there are also those nuns who came from elsewhere like one from France who was on missions in Fiji and Founded the Solomon Islands mission for the Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary.
Just a word of caution if your female family member is not in the database on the Clare site the name could still appear in the complete database.
I am trying to find out who holds the copyright of the original database but so far no luck.
Lorraine

Thankyou Rhonda so much for this info!
The clues that Eric was in Canada and that his sons were born there are a big help! Looking at the maps Red Deer is not far from Nevis where we suspected Eric had gone to in the early 1900s, most probably pre WW1.

Replies to my posting also indicate relatives in white pages in Australia who i can write to. I now hope to find Eric in passenger lists going to Canada, but would also like to discover when he went to Australia! What incoming pax lists are there for Australia, tho not sure what years to look - inter war years.
Thanks again
Richard

Hello.
I will check out getting a marriage certificate. But I am not hopeful of finding anything on it.
Yes, she was married to John J Kehoe.
If the birth certificate of my own father is anything to go by, there won't be anything on the birth certificate. John Kehoe was not my grandfather. Florence had my dad before she married John Kehoe. But he raised my dad as his own son.
The information on my father's birth certificate is abysmal.

Florence Goldsmith cut a huge amount off her age when she married Samuel Barton.

However, her plaque at the cemetery shows the correct age, so she obviously fessed up at some stage.

The record of Florence Gertrude Goldsmith being the mother of Florence Goldsmith was a baptism record which shows a date of birth and date of baptism. It gives the d.o.b. as 1903.
Florence Goldsmith is in the Bradshaw 1911 census as a Visitor.

Anything is/was possible with my grandmother. I don't believe I will ever get to the truth.

I sincerely thank you for your help.

Regards.

Ray
Hello.
Her name was Florence Bradshaw. She sailed to Australia on the Norseman and arrived about August 1913. It was on the shipping manifest that she was 9 which would have made her year of birth 1904. She said she was from Ashton under Lyne in Lancashire. The person who accompanied her was Florence Gertrude Barton (nee Goldsmith).
She claimed to be her aunt, but I believe her to be her mother.
I have found that a Florence Gertrude Goldsmith gave birth to a Florence Goldsmith about 1903. I also found that a Florence Goldsmith was a resident with a family by the name of Bradshaw in Ashton under Lyne in the 1911 census. I believe that she was given the name Bradshaw so that her mother could marry and not let her husband know that it was her daughter.
Florence Gertrude Goldsmith (who married Samuel Barton) seemed to also be an habitual teller of untruths. She was a great deal older than I believe her husband knew about.
My grandmother did tell me back in the 70s when she was still alive that she always believed that Florence Barton was her mother. She also told me that she was born in 1908. But I can not find anything that fits that timeline in regard to the shipping manifest saying she was 9 in 1913.
Thanks for your help.
Regards.
Ray

Hello.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
I have always believed that my grandmother (who came to Australia in 1913 when she was 9), had her name changed by her mother to avoid her new husband knowing that she had a child. She always told her that she was her aunty, which I believe was rubbish. The problem is in those days, unlike now, where now you have to walk over broken glass to prove who you are, in those days, nobody really bothered checking anything.
My grandmother was incredibly secretive, and she had no problem keeping things a secret, because she had no documentation.
To sum up, what I was hoping to find, was something official at the England end to support the name she supplied was her real name, which I doubt.
Thanks.
Ray
Can someone please tell me if there are records in Britain and Australia, apart from SHIPPING, where I can find out about emigration and immigration?
For example. Say, back in 1913 in England, did someone just get on a ship and leave without formally filling in an application form???
Or arriving in Australia and the only record is what the captain of the ship wrote down?
Re: Sunday telegraph 1944-where to find. Article on Henry Knight

I know the National Library through its Trove collection has uploaded many Australian newspapers, but I do not know specifically the date spans or names, but it is certainly worth a try. I'm about to try searching the Sunday Telegraph myself, but for a much more recent event - a big feature article on my father's aid visit to New Guinea with a group of geriatrics, to build an airstrip. As I live in Canberra, I can visit in person, but I do know their online collections can be accessed from anywhere, and might be more complete than state libraries. Good luck.

My name is Sharon Chafer Nelson. I live in Canada. I am trying to locate members of the family of Jack or John Chafer. He went to Australia from Epworth England. His parents were Alfred Arthur Chafer and Ellen Pilsworth from "The Turbury" in Epworth. He is the youngest son born in 1914?. His oldest brother was my Grandfather Arthur Chafer. Arthur brought his family to Canada in 1927. I am hoping to touch base with the Australian side. I can be reached by Ancestry or by email at sanelson47@shaw.ca. Hope someone out there can shed some light. Thanks

There is a Doreen C Scorer still listed as living at Romford, Essex. UK searches require payment to see the full address. Just put in Doreen C Scorer & Romford, Essex into google to take you to one of the sites.

Regards

Toni White

This is the 1962 death of Annie in NSW:
5932/1962 SCORER ANNIE MAY / GEORGE THOMAS / AGNES FLORENCE / HORNSBY

Not sure if this is the same fellow but this indicates he was still in NSW when your dad was 7.

The Canberra Times, Thursday 19 October 1944
AMAZING ESCAPE FOR POSTAL EMPLOYEE
SYDNEY, Wednesday, - A postal employee, George Robert Scorer, of Kogarah, had an amazing escape from
death this morning when the car he was driving skidded 50 yards and overturned into the front garden of a house in Condamine Street, Manly. His leg was pinned between the brake, clutch and steering wheel. He was taken to hospital with a probable fracture of the pelvis and fractured ribs.

Unless there are two men by the same name?

His military record is spelled as follows:
SCORER GEORGE ROBT : Service Number - NX11163 : Date of birth - 10 Nov 1917 : Place of birth - NEWCASTLE ENGLAND : Place of enlistment - PADDINGTON NSW : Next of Kin - SCORER A

Elsie SCORER married James Walter LAWRENCE in 1949 in Hurstville district NSW (reg 24387). Her husband's death:
LAWRENCE James Walter
Death notice
17JUN1989 Death
late of Caboolture, Queensland, formerly of Mortdale
Sydney Morning Herald 20JUN1989

See Ryerson Index site to do a lookup request of this death notice.

Their mother's death in NSW:
22517/1980 SCORER MAGDALEN LILLIAN / EDWARD HENRY / ANNIE
Their father's death in NSW:
22517/1961 SCORER WILLIAM CHARLTON / GEORGE ROBERT / HANNAH / HURSTVILLE

Their deaths also listed at Ryerson Index.

It appears he (Wm) had a brother named James Hy who died in Hurstville in 1941; possibly another named Joseph Abraham who died in Kurri Kurri in 1963.

Perhaps this is the marriage in the UK that you are referring to between George and a woman named Doreen:

George R. SCORER
Spouse: Doreen C. WARD
Registered: June Quarter 1962
Registration district: Wandsworth, Surrey
Volume: 5d
Page Number: 1247

If this marriage is correct then it took place after Annie May died. Trees here on Ancestry state she died in Feb 1962.

I strongly doubt that George was forced to marry in 1937 as it is illegal to make anyone marry against their will, and I would hope that they wouldn't find anyone who was willing to perform the ceremony.

George and Annie's son Peter died in 1941 which would have made Richard aged 4, not 2. George was not discharged from the Army till 1944 and those records may contain correspondence that will indicate where he was in the years following. They will also tell you if George had any previous military experience or contact prior to enlisting in 1940.

Debra

Annie NEWBOLD arrived with her mother Agnes, brother George and sister Margaret in 1929 on the 'Moreton Bay'.

It looks like her father George Thomas had died that same year in Derbyshire. They had moved there from Nottinghamshire.

Debra

Some of your info appears to be incorrect. George immigrated to Australia with his parents and sister in 1926 on the 'Ormuz'. George was 9 years old.

He enlisted in 1940 at Kogarah http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/Veteran.aspx?serviceId=A&veter...

If you go to the National Archives of Australia website you can search for his service record. It has not been digitised but you can pay for it to be done. Just click on his 'control symbol' link and then 'request copy' on the right hand side of the page. These WW2 service records usually contain photographs.

Debra
