John Joseph Hughes, a Catholic,was born in County Louth, Ireland in May 1891. At the age of 40 he married a widow Maria Williams (nee Lloyd or Lough) in June 1931 but the place of marriage is not known.
John Joseph Hughes was one of a family of 18 children. His father was John James Hughes from County Louth, Ireland who in 1887 married Bridget McArdle and after her death in 1894 he married Catherine Finnegan in 1895 in County Louth.
It is believed that John Joseph Hughes died in a drowning accident.
