Re: looking for robert bye
Hiyas, Emily arrived on the same ship as Robert in 1883, listed as Emily GARBETT. She is definitely NOT aboriginal.
Maybe their marriage had not been 100% solemnised or something as they left England one month after the marriage so maybe it was a paper work issue that meant she had to travel as GARBETT. Who knows but she was born in England.

Re: looking for robert bye
Hiyas, From what I can see and with Mary's find of the child born 1901 to another man, from as early as 1900 Robert and Emily were separated. Robert appears to move to WA by 1903 and stays there till atleast 1925 then turns up by 1931 in Murray Downs, NSW then in VIC by 1936 when he dies.

Re: looking for robert bye
Hi Cynthia, What is your connection to a Robert BYE? Which child etc is in your line. Maybe we can work it out from there as there is every chance Robert had a 'live in' wife as Emily appears to have had a 'live in' husband.

Re: looking for robert bye
"His burial plot is at Kangaroo Flat, a suburb of Bendigo. If he wanted nursing care I would have thought he would have got it in Mildura where his family were living at the time?
Thankyou for the information on Murray Downs that fits in perfectly with the family"
Doubt there were any aged care places in Mildura [I live in the area] in the 1930's. Not uncommon for the aged with dementia, mental health issues, terminal illnesses and remember there were the depression years, and no funds, to be admitted to places like the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum. Aradale at Ararat and Melbourne Benelovent Asylum at Cheltenham etc. Rail transport was available. You need to be au fait with the social conditions of the times when researching.
Perhaps a daughter or son were living in Bendigo. I am continually puzzled why people are so reluctant to purchase certificates to validate their research.
Off the soap box now :)

Hiyas, After reading the other thread and checking a few things I see that Arthur Walter MUNN (illegitimate son of Emily) married a Violet Bertha May BAKER in 1923 VIC.
Arthurs death 22435/1977 MUNN ARTHUR WALTER (f)WALTER (m) EMILY BYE
Maybe the daughter Violet who was of aboriginal descent was Violet the daughter-in-law?

Re: looking for robert bye
LOL Hansen, Years ago people bought every cert there was just to confirm every detail but these days it seems "close enough is good enough". If something doesn't add up people quite openly make up excuses for the difference and stick to their guns, no matter how unrealistic it sounds.
jinskipp or Cynthia,
The death certs for Robert and Emily probably wouldn't go far as no one seemed to know much 'fact ' about them. Robert's death may/may not include his children's/wife's name and may/may not include correct place of birth or time in colony. Emily's death cert should include the names of her children but won't have correct parents nor it seems correct time in colony.
A birth cert for one of the children born either NSW or VIC would be helpful though.
I think Emily was born late 1860 Worcestershire, to Henry b.1821 and Elizabeth b.1822. Henry appears to die in 1862.
I see Emily's obit states she arrived 15yo with her parents/family but this is incorrect. (as we know per the marriage record and immigration record) A birth cert should clear up the date/place of marriage.

Just to stop the confusion
Robert BYE married Emily GARBETT and that was the only birth name she ever used. Emily was born in England 1860 to Henry and Elizabeth GARBETT.
All the children's births are registered with mothers surname GARBETT/GARBUTT (bad spelling I guess) Emily is listed continually on Electoral Rolls, with her children and for a while (same street) with the MUNN she had Arthur with. Emily's death notice lists most of her children but 2 may have predeceased her. Even though the timing is out Emily's death notice also states she was born in England.
Emily did NOT have several surnames. The death registration of some of her children have 'close enough' but not quite accurate variations which only shows that whoever supplied the information was not 100% sure of her surname.
The Richard BYE and 'other' Emily do NOT appear to be connected to this thread.

Hiyas, This death index 6802/1955 BYE EMILY HARRIEVETT NOT KNOWN (District) BOURKE
I think the parents names might have been muddled up in either uploading or translation as Emily's father was Henry (Harry) and the family I have been researching the mother Elizabeth's surname is EVERELL. I think the fathers name on the registration is a screw up of Harry and EVERELL. (EVERETT).

Re: looking for robert bye
Hiyas, Not exactly sure what has already been posted but will post just incase. In 1881 census Robert BYE is living with Charles TEA, that was witness on the marriage. Charles TEA would have been Robert's cousin as he was Joyce TEA's nephew.
The other witness Mary Ann BELLINGER was Roberts sister Mary Ann BYE who married William BELLINGER in 1875.
Both Robert and Emily appear to be Assisted Passengers which means they would have applied and been accepted long BEFORE they married as they married just one month before immigration. This explains their arrival being in their separate names, rather than delaying the trip and reapplying as a married couple. It might even explain how they met.
The death 1936 appears to be the right man but I'm not sure any of the children's birth certs would PROVE the death is the right man. Even if a childs birth cert states that Robert was born in England we have no way to match that 100% to the guy who died in 1936.
Maybe the 1936 death cert would name his children or give some clue.

Re: looking for robert bye
Everything you say about Robert in England matches my family tree. His mother's name, is sister Mary Ann and all the dates. I'm so pleased to have tied all this information up together. My tree goes back to 1771 when Robert's three times great grandparents Robert Bye and Sarah Cotterell married in Burford Oxfordshire on 5th May 1771. Throughout the generations, all the families have worked the land but it wasn't till 1936 that my grandfather became a land owner, he bought a farm in Curbridge Oxfordshire. I still live in the village. This has been a great help to me. I will get a copy of Robert and Emily's marriage certificate if I can and post the details but I'm confident that's it's all right at the UK end. Things still look confusing at the Australia end.
