The information on assisted passenger lists were taken from their applications so Robert BYE being SINGLE was not accurate although it probably was at the time of his application for assisted passage. Information in passenger records is not reliable.

It is your Robert BYE who died in Bendigo.

He and Emily married before emigrating to Australia.

Marriages Jun 1883
BYE Robert Birmingham 6d/199
GARBELL Emily Birmingham 6d/199

I have no place of death. He had lived in the Adelaide area in Mildura. I have his year of death as 1936 age 76 but have no birth, death or marriage certificate so it's all enlighten guess work on my part.

"he had lived in the Adelaide area in Mildura"

This doesn't make sense. Adelaide is in South Australia and Mildura is on the Murray River, NSW border, in Victoria.

You could purchase any of his children's birth certificates in Victoria or NSW which will give you Robert's age at the time of the birth registration, his place of birth and the date and place of their marriage.

Purchase online [AUD$24] and immediately download

It is possible that Robert required nursing care and the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum was probably one of the nearer places in 1936. Deaths in public institutions often have scant information on the death certificates however hopefully it will have at least his country of birth and occupation.

His burial plot is at Kangaroo Flat, a suburb of Bendigo. If he wanted nursing care I would have thought he would have got it in Mildura where his family were living at the time?

Thankyou for the information on Murray Downs that fits in perfectly with the family

Surnames: Bye Garbett
Hi Cynthja,

Emily parted from Robert BYE, before 1900, and had a son, Arthur Walter, out of wed-lock, below. He grew up, with his mother, but used his father's surname of MUNN. (Confirmed in her obituary).

Surname: BYE
Given Names: Arth Walt
Event: B
Sex: M
Spouse Surname/Father: Unknown
Spouse Gvn Names/Mother: Emily GARBETT
Birth Place: MILDURA
Year: 1901
Reg. Number: 13019R

Here is an accident which involved Emily's son, Arthur, published 29 Sep 1915, in The Mildura Cultivator.

Re... "If he wanted nursing care I would have thought he would have got it in Mildura where his family were living at the time?"

Only his daughters were living at Mildura, at the time, he was nearing death. His wife, Emily, would not have cared for him, as their marriage had already broken down.

As I have said, sooo many times in this thread; somebody needs to buy a birth certificate for one of the children to confirm, the identity (birthplace) of this Robert BYE.

OR,
Better still, take a look at the, handwritten Marriage Certificate, here on Ancestry ....

Name: Emily Garbell
Spouse: Robert Berl
Father: Harry Garbell
Birth: abt 1861
Marriage: 10 Jun 1883 - Birmingham, St Thomas, Warwickshire

Thanks hansen07, for finding their marriage record.

Cynthja, Emily GARBETT, the legal wife of Robert BYE, was not an aboriginal woman, as you have stated....

"Robert Bye arrived in Australia on the Hersperus in 1883. He was listed as a single man, ag. labourer. This is not the same Robert Bye, farmer that lived in Tasmania. Nor is he the same Robert Bye, Miner that lived in Bendigo.

He married an Aboriginal woman named Emily (as above with several surnames). It appears he may not have lived with her for much of the time as she spend a fair portion of her life at Yelta Mission - two of her children were born there. Indeed they may not have been legally married."

Jane Inskipp.... this is your man!

Remember, his parents names were Robert BYE, and Joyce TEA.
A witness at his marriage on 10 June 1883, at Birmingham, was Charles TEA.

Mary
