Looking to see if anyone has access to Netherlands records. My Great Great Grandfather was a miner in Broken Hill and reportedly born in 1862 and originally came from Holland (via England)at a young age. He was a private man and never talked about his past and hence I have not been able to find any legit records. I have since located a "missing friends" article posted is SA Police Gazette in 1909. This appears to be too much of a coincidence but means he was born in 1867. The article states his mother Mrs Lelie Hammer was looking for a Theodor Rjidus Hammer who is supposed to be employed on one of the mines in Broken Hill - Description - A native of Rotterdam (Holland) aged 42. He could have changed his name and birth date because he apparently jumped ship and was on his own when coming to Australia It is also believed that he had a sister named Rika and Gertrude and a brother named Johannes

It would be greatly appreciated if i could get some feedback on my search

Cheers Kathy

Hi Kathy,

I see from your family tree that this is the marriage in NSW that you believe is your Edward:

Edward HAMMEN
Mary A RICKARD
Married: 1886
Registration District: Silverton
# 7623

What information does Edward give about himself when he married?

Hi Kathy,

I think Edward HAMMER/HAMMIL spent time in Goulburn Gaol in 1889.

This story below, states that William HAMMILL was in Goulburn Gaol. The Police Gazette, column 1, 20 Nov 1889, named the prisoner as Edward HAMMIL, whose wife lived at Silverton.

FYI for other researchers - there are 4 pages of replies here to a request by Kathy (assuming the same descendant) http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=627148.0

It includes attachments of Edward's marriage and death certs.

P.S. My paternal ancestry is entirely Dutch and Edward is not a Dutch name. Possible names that may be translated/Anglicised to Edward are Eduart, Eduwart and Eeltje.

Hi,
You really need to purchase atleast ONE NSW Birth Certificate for one of his children, as was recommended in 2013.
Especially in light of his death certificate stating he was born in England.

Have you purchased any NSW birth certificate, which should give age and birthplace of parents?

Hi Kathy,
You need to start purchasing his childrens NSW birth certs to try and confirm his birthplace.
I find it odd you mention "maybe's and might be's" in this thread but nothing of the 4 pages of research others have already done for you.

Thank you Kellie

I did purchase a marriage certificate some time ago and there was very little info on it (no date of births or parents names) I also have a copy of his death certificate which states he was 85 at his time of death in South Australia in October 1947. It also mentions his Birthplace as England and that his length of Residency in the commonwealth was 70 years at the time of his death.
