Thanks again Kellie!

Yes I'm aware of the 100 year grace period for birth records. That's why I turned to the message boards for help. I had hoped that someone may 'know something' or have a resource that I don't with that 1 clue that would help me trace his roots with some clarity.

I appreciate you taking your time to help me.

Thank you Mary!

I wish I was certain of John Douglas's parents but that's the million dollar question. They're the key bits of information I'm unable to confirm, as well as his marriage date and place to Shirley. I'm going through microfiche copies of newspapers trying to find a trace of anything to help but it's a time consuming process.

I appreciate your help.

Hi Mary.

Yes, I too had found those electoral roll records. I haven't found Shirley on any electoral rolls from memory. She did serve in the army. Would that have played a roll in her not being listed? I have her Mobilization Attestation Form which shows she only served between 1943 & 1944 and she died in 1973. Was it compulsory for women to vote back then?

Hi again.

I'm seeking a lead that I am able to confirm in regards to his parents, his date and place of birth and any siblings he may have had. I have his wife and children's details.

Hi kb,

Re... " I have her Mobilization Attestation Form which shows she only served between 1943 & 1944 and she died in 1973."

I can see a few of her siblings enlisted for WW2. All born at Benalla, Vic, and state either Patrick Vincent GILBERT, or Ida Mary GILBERT, as next of kin.

I still cannot locate her on electoral rolls.

How do you know that she died in 1973?

No KOHN family showing up on the Yarrawonga Cemetery list; however that might not be a complete list for the cemetery.

Is this article, dated, 26 Feb 1953, your John KOHN?

Wow Mary, I really appreciate your help!

Re: "How do you know that she died in 1973?"

I have visited the grave she shares with John Douglas in Yarrawonga. Her date of death is 17 Aug 1973. I was also able to obtain a record of her death from the BMD online.
Shirley's family has been much easier to corroborate so I don't really require too much information on her or the Gilbert's. It's really only a marriage record or personal information from someone about her marriage that I require.

Re: "Is this article, dated, 26 Feb 1953, your John KOHN?"

I believe this John Kohne is different as I have found multiple advertising pages for a salon in Benalla with this name mentioned;

Given the electoral rolls state John Douglas was a labourer and grader operator, I don't think this fits. I do however think that this link below could be him as a junior farmer, named Jack Kohn. I've found a number of articles of similar topic. It fits with his age and the local area and family the public family trees had mentioned here on Ancestry but it doesn't connect any further dots than that.

Hi kb,

Re... "and she died in 1973"

I found her death registration on Vic BDMs.
Year: 1973
Surname: KOHN
Given Names: Shirley Veronica
Fathers Surname: Gilbert
Fathers Given Names: Gilbert
Mothers Maiden Surname: Binion
Mothers Given names: Ada May
District: Euro

You can purchase and down load death certificates, instantly, from the Vic BDM's website.

Some people have the CD, as do most family history groups, that have the 1918, NSW Births. They might look for John KOHN, born in Tumbarumba, for you.

CD - NSW Federation BDMs 1889-1918.

Here is the death of Shirley's aunt, Eliza Ann ROBERTS (nee GILBERT), in Nov 1943, at Wagga Wagga.

Hi kb,

Re... "I was also able to obtain a record of her death from the BMD online. "

Wow, you have her death certificate.

It should state her age at marriage?
Place of Marriage?
And to whom married?

Can you please list them for me?

We might find a story in the relevant paper, about their marriage?

Hi kb,
Check with libraries in your area or Family History Centre as many have the CD with births to 1918 in NSW.
