Richard Richards great grandfather The Story

Hoping this finds out some information. My grandmother was the child of Mary Hanna Trewern and a Richard Richards ( the best guess we have). She was listed as Polly Trewern Richards on her birth registration; Polly Richards on the census records and Pollie Richards on her marriage registration. The story we have is that her grandmother Mary Hanna who was born in Cornwall England had a child; my grandmother Polly; out of wedlock. The father"s last name is listed as Richards. It was only in stories that I heard that his name was Richard Richards who later moved from Cornwall to Australia. He would have been born around 1860; probably in the Penzance or Madron area. It was rumored that he moved to Australia to herd sheep ( o verification on that). Just looking for family to verify rumored stories. There's the whole hang up with the illegitimate child but that was 130 years ago! Just want to fill in that portion of the tree. Best guess came up with two names: Richard Richards from St Buryan who moved to Casino, NSW born 1856, died 1913 and Richard White Richards born St Just in Penwith about 1862, died 1924 in Ballarat East, Vic. Any information appreciated

Hi,

Re.... "She was listed as Polly Trewern Richards on her birth registration; "

Date of birth?
Place of birth?
Mothers name?
Fathers name?
Fathers occupation?

Did Polly live all of her life in England?
Or, did she migrate to Australia?

I guess, you want us to search for the death of a man named Richard RICHARDS, in Australia?

Mary

Family stories are so hard to prove and so often events were covered up to meet the social niceties of the day.

The name Richard RICHARDS is common in the Australian indexes and even if you purchased the death certificates of the above men, only issue of their marriages would be listed on their death certificates.

Good luck with your search.

Haven't gotten that far yet. Still trying to see if he is the correct Richard; though his timing and area of birth do conform to what is assumed. And that's it, an assumption until I have proof. My grandmother's paperwork; birth registration, marriage registration and census records as a child denote Richards as last name. Stories I heard defer to the Richard Richards who moved to Australia. Nothing hard yet. Richard White Richards' grave is in Victoria, Australia. Born 1861 in Cornwall; died 1924 in Australia.

My hopes are that since Richard White Richards is one of the men who fit the profile (1861, Cornwall-1924 Victoria, Australia), that there would be some family members who I could connect with to verify ; or not; the story of him being related. Just leaves a large gap in the family tree. Nothing sits in documentation regarding which specific Richard Richards is the correct one.

FYI: Polly Richards Trewern: born 9/17/1885 Penzance Cornwall, England. Married Richard Jeffery 05/05/1906 in Cornwall. Moved to the United States in 1920. Died in Barberton, Ohio (near Akron), 10/31/1966

Hi,

"Richard White Richards born St Just in Penwith about 1862, died 1924 in Ballarat East, Vic."

AND

"My hopes are that since Richard White Richards is one of the men who fit the profile (1861, Cornwall-1924 Victoria, Australia),"

Do you have the death certificate, dated 1924, in Victoria, Australia, of Richard White RICHARDS?

Without that certificate, you are only assuming that he was born in England.
He may have been born in Australia.

Mary

Hi,
Have you traced either of these men in England to see where they lived or when they left England? If one or both left previous to 1884 then can't be your man.

You might need to consider DNA testing.
I doubt there will be anything you could find now which could prove 100% who Polly's father was.
Even if one of the Richards had an illegitimate child before leaving England, how would you prove that child was Polly?
