Hello
I am looking for details of my GGrandfather William Holmes, and his parents Joseph and Harriet Holmes , who arrived in NSW c1880 from England. He was possibly about 4 years old at the time of his arrival. Would he be listed as a passenger or would he be listed as child with one of his parents? Also, travel from NSW to WA c1896 would it be by ship and would there be passenger lists?

Thank you

Hi Jean,

Do you have any Birth Death and Marriage certificates for William HOLMES?

Does it state on his death certificate, "Time in Colony"?

Where did he die?

Did other siblings migrate with William HOLMES, to Australia?

Why do you think it was about 1880?

Mary

I have William's marriage and death certificates. He died in WA in 1928. His death certificates indicates that he was in NSW for 17 years and 31 years in WA. I have assumed from that information that he arrived in c1880. His marriage certificate does not give information on the amount of time in Australia.

I am struggling to find family information so I do not know if any siblings travelled with him.

Hi Jean,

There were two, William HOLMES that died 1928 in Western Australia. Is "your" man the one who died on 8 Sep 1928?

His age, on his burial record matches to a birth of 1876.

First Name: WILLIAM
Last Name: HOLMES
Fremantle Burial
Aged (Years): 52
Date of Death: 08/09/1928
Suburb: FREMANTLE

Now to the marriage certificate. Can you please transcribe all the details, on here?

The witnesses, may be relatives of the married couple.
The names and occupations, of the groom's parents?
His birthplace?

From there, we can check BDM's, if he was born in England, and see if there were other siblings.

Mary

Hello,
Yes, the William Holmes who died 8 September 1928 is the one I am looking for.

The marriage certificate for William and Martha does not ask for place of birth. It does ask for the names of the Father's names and the Father's occupations. They are Joseph Holmes, Miner and George Ladhams Brickmaker. Their mother's are Harriet Bradshaw and Mary Ann Ayres.

Their witnesses are Mary H(?) James. The name of the second witness is very hard to read. It may be Alice Iduce. Now that I have spent some time looking at witness signature 2 I wonder if the first name is Lettice!

The marriage certificate has Martha listed as a widow and they were married by special licence. There is also a note at the bottom of the marriage certificate to read Martha Elizabeth Ladhams in column 8 as Martha Elizabeth Jorgensen.

Cheers
Jean

Hi Jean,

I am still looking for this family, I want to know, what happened to Joseph HOLMES, after his wife died in October 1884.

Re... "Their witnesses are Mary H(?) James. The name of the second witness is very hard to read. It may be Alice Iduce. Now that I have spent some time looking at witness signature 2 I wonder if the first name is Lettice!"

Lettice married in 1902. The McCAHON family tree on here, gives an exact date for Lettice HOLMES' marriage to George CLARK, in 1902, and it shows her parents on that tree, as Joseph HOLMES and Harriet BRADSHAW. Maybe, the owner of that tree has her marriage certificate. I wonder who the witnesses were, for Lettice's marriage?

So, if Lettice was a witness, in 1905, (HOLMES - LADHAM marriage) she would have been Lettice CLARK, at that time.

Hello

The family story is that Martha was married before William but her first husband was already married and his wife was still living. I believe he married the first time in South Australia. Some of the children from the first marriage took the name Holmes and others had reverted back to Jorgensen.

I have the birth certificate for William Jorgensen Holmes and his father is shown as William Holmes, born in England. The birth certificate also states that it was registered in 1916 under the authority of the Legitimation Act of 1909.

Thank you for the Service record. There were several interesting pieces of information.

Cheers

Jean
