Seeking any information regarding EVANGELINE ANNE STEPHENS born in Tenterfield 1883.

Daughter of James and Janet Stephens nee Henderson, her father James was a Surveyor/Architect in Tenterfield around that time.

She had four brothers:
Albert George J Stephens 1878 - 1962
Edward Charles ‘Ned’ Stephens 1879 - 1966
Guely Henderson Stephens 1879 - 1879
Henry Tenterfield Stephens 1881 - 1915

Evangeline was working as a teacher from 1900 - 1906 at Camdenville Public School in the Sydney area until she gave birth to her son Norman born 1906, who died 10 months later. It is believed that she may have been disowned by her family for having an illegitimate child.

Any information as to where she may have ended up would be a great help.

Do you have birth and death certificates for baby Norman STEPHENS?

Birth place might be a residential address.

Death certificate will have burial place, and cemetery burial record might be under father's name.

If Norman is with Evangeline at 10 months you might think that Evangeline is not living alone.........might be living with Norman's father.

Do you have death certificates for her parents James and Janet, which would identify their children as alive / deceased?

Did James or Janet leave a Will......which might name children as beneficiaries?

Hi Veronica,

When Janet STEPHENS died, only the two boys are mentioned in her death and funeral notices. 8 Oct 1943

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/17877372?searchTerm=...

When Albert George STEPHENS died in 1962, only his brother, Edward STEPHENS, is mentioned in the death notice published in the SMH, 28 April 1962.

Hi Mary

Thank you for your info. On Janet's death certificate it states children of marriage:
Albert G J 65 yrs
Edward C 63 yrs
1 Male & 1 female deceased

So I'm guessing Evangeline must of died before 1943. I have tried BDM, Ancestry, Cemetery websites and the internet to try and find anything on her, but to no avail. All I have is her birth certificate, Teachers Roll as well as a Birth and Death Certificate for her son 'Norman'.

Hi Veronica,

As Fryerning asked.....

What address is on the birth and death certificates of the son Norman STEPHENS?

Maybe, if it is a residential address, that will help in our search.

Where was he buried?
Maybe, the mother, Evangeline, is buried in the same grave. A phonecall to the cemetery, might clarify the matter.

Hi Mary

On the birth certificate of Norman Stephens, Date and place of birth 29th April 1906, 7 Old Canterbury Road Lewisham Petersham. On the certificate Norman is classed as "illegitimate".
There is no father identified, only Evangeline "Spinster" Aged 23 born in Tenterfield NSW.

On the death of Norman Stephens, Date and place of death 24th February 1907, 5 Smith Street Waterloo. He was buried on 26th February 1907 at Independent Cemetery Rookwood. Again he is classed as an "illegitimate infant" who died from Gastro - Enteritis, only Evangeline is on the death certificate. The informant is a lady by the name of Jane Wheatley/ Wheating, Guardian under the Children Protection at the same address as the place of death.

I am unable to find a death certificate for Evangeline. Another possibility Evangeline may have died during childbirth, not sure.

Cheer, Veronica

Hi Veronica,

The Rookwood Independent Cemetery website, has been down for some time....

"Sorry for the inconvenience but we’re performing some maintenance at the moment.

For information or assistance please contact Rookwood General Cemeteries Reserve Trust on 02 9746 2177"

I contacted them a few years ago, and they were most helpful, and could tell me, if two people were buried together, and their names. I suggest, that you give them a call.

Regarding the birth address.

I can see on Trove newspapers, that it is the home of a nurse... this quote from a September 1908 notice..

"BIRTHS ... at the residence of Nurse Roberts, 7 Old Canterbury-road, Lewisham, the wife of ..."

No luck with 5 Smith Street, Waterloo.

Hiyas,
Possible death
27206/1951 STEVENS EVANGELINE 69 YRS ARTARMON

EDIT. For a minute I thought this was not her as the cemetery inscription read "our mother" and the death notice said "relic of George".
TSAKALAKIS Evangeline see STEVENS, Evangeline Sydney Morning Herald 15OCT1951

Might be worth searching more
