Re: Searching for Moms father and his Parents ??
Also I may be looking to much into this but for instance his SS# for the death index for state says Maryland. Not sure is that's where it was issued, I know its a lot different now then back then and looking at my grandmas SS card and Melvins SS card side by side her just has Signature and on his it has Workers Signature when I searched to see what was the difference and looking SS cards changed a lot but the ones with workers signature got issued in the 1940s
Also on the marriage application where it says date of birth verified- the birth cert and judicial decree are not checked but it has other(Specify) and it has the the letter L and 12 numbers well I looked its up on Google( I know silly but just wanted to see what it would say) and it came up Maryland. So the first thing that you said could be his wife and then it makes me wonder if he lived in Maryland maybe with his first wife..but then again im not sure I could be just overthinking and over reading it :) but once again thank you for the help so much :)

Re: Searching for Moms father and his Parents ??
updating for other researchers. This is what was found and shared via private email messages:
Yeah, the obit was disappointing. But, with a little digging we were able to find that his wife's maiden name was Williams and that she was born 7 Dec 1895 at South Bend, IN to Albert/Bert Williams and Angeline Kaiser (see 1942 SS application database at ancestry). She married Raymond Smith in 1915 Lake County. They are found on most records in Gary IN. Before 1948 (city directory) she was living at the same house at 4044 Van Buren where she would later live with Melvin.
With City directory info, we know they married between about 1947-1952 and I was hoping it was in Lake County, but I couldn't find their names in the indexes for marriages of Lake county between those years (free at familysearch.org--checked Long, Smith and Williams) Sooooo, where did they marry? In another county or in another state entirely? Annabell was born in Indiana and seems to have lived most of her life there, but I supposed she could have met Melvin somewhere else (on vacation, while visiting friends or relatives etc....) The index for Porter County does not cover the years necessary.
As for Melvin, he seems to be a ghost. His marriage to Annabell could be helpful.

Re: Searching for Moms father and his Parents ??
Alexis -- You need to order his original Social Security application (SS-5 form) to see what info he put on that. His birth name and parents' names should be on that. I don't think it's here at Ancestry.com, but it has to exist at the SSA. See this link: https://secure.ssa.gov/apps9/eFOIA-FEWeb/internet/main.jspNote: Get a photocopy of the original, not an extract. Use the birth date in the SS Death Index, and leave parents' info blank.

Re: Searching for Moms father and his Parents ??
Ok I was going to ask just that question :). I called SS office and asked them do I put down the DOB on the SS death index and they told me yes when I ask about putting the parents down but I wasn't sure if that was the real names(really hoping it is the names) and they told me if its wrong I will not get it. That was kinda depressing but I have to try something to get over this brick wall so I wont put down his parents names in hopes they don't white out the names. I have also looked and looked for him once they said they released the applications for SS and nothing :(
But if that also fails then my mom is getting a DNA kit so I can hopefully get something. :) thank you everyone who has helped me on this :)

Theory: Shellenberger & "Long" in same PA town.
Alexis, just posting the latest here in case other researchers can help.
There are not too many Alma Shellenbergers in PA. Was looking for one who may have lived near a Melvin James Long in that state. Found an interesting situation. Alma Shellenberger, born Oct 1889, living in Altoona, PA 1900 census (would have been age 15-17 when Melvin Frank Long was born)
Also in Altoona, PA is the family of Jacob Lundy (born PA) & Ida Viola Beasley (born Missouri). Among their several children in 1900 are twins Gertrude Lundy & Frank Lundy, born 11 March 1890 (per Gertrude's SS Application and Calif death index)
Frank Lundy "of California" is listed as a survivor in the 1929 Altoona obit for his sister Merle (Lundy) Laughlin. However, a search of California records (census, draft, etc) does not produce a Frank Lundy born in PA in March of 1890.
Interestingly, Frank Lundy disappears from PA records after the 1910 census and Melvin James Long appears in California before the WWI draft registration. His birthdate is given as 1 March 1890 on that form, but as 11 March 1890 on other records. He is living in the same Cal county where Gertrude Lundy dies in 1951. Her Cal death index gives her father's name as Long and mother's name as Beezley even though it appears she wasn't married and her father should have been listed as Lundy (her ss application was from 1942 and she is still using the Lundy name at that time) Did Melvin James Long provide the info for her death record?
Melvin James Long is in the Cal death index for 1955 with father's name Long and mother's name Beasley. He has the same exact birth date and birth town (Altoona, PA) as Gertrude Lundy. I suspect Frank Lundy moved to Cal and changed his name to Melvin James Long. He gives his mother's birthplace as Missouri on at least one record (1930 census)
Frank Lundy b.1890 is living in the same town as Alma Shellenberger on both the 1900 and 1910 census of Blair Co, PA. I don't see a child living with either of them in 1910, but it seems at least remotely possible that they had a child together as teenagers. This could explain why there is no "Melvin Frank Long" on early records. He could have been using any last name depending on where he may have been sent to live. Did he change his name to "Long" because he knew of his father's new name???
It's all a big question mark, but there are too many coincidences to ignore.
Additional facts on Lundy family: a sister of Frank Lundy, Margaret/Peggy Lundy was married in St Joseph Co, Indiana in 1917. At that time she states that her father is dead and her mother is living in Indiana. The mother, Ida Viola (Beasley) is on the death index for New Jersey Aug 1920. Margaret Lundy (divorced?) is living in Utica, NY in the 1920s. Also in that town is Gertrude Lundy and at a certain point another sister Rae Ruth (Lundy) Wetzel. Ruth married Harold Wetzel in 1921 WV. In 1921 Rae Ruth is listed as a resident of Pittsburgh. Ruth died 1931 Cambria Co, PA (entered in index as Wietzel) Sister Merle Lundy married Benjamin Laughlin and lived in Altoona, dying there in 1929.

1930 directory has Robert L. Laughlin living on S.Redwood street, Brea, CA about a half mile from Melvin James Long on N. Orange Ave. Robert is the son of Merle (Lundy) Laughlin.
