i believe that, for you, this will be a process of elimination. finding each man with a name similar to the one you have found , and find out where he was in 1945.unless, and hopefully, someone recognizes the photo. eg here are two candidates- (and the more these names appear, and the more people who respond, the better the chance that that will happen) also, be aware-there are boards here at ancestry for hunting missing persons -you may have better luck there-someone may be hunting a missing 1/2 sibling who they were rumored to have. is there any chance that "ed" knew of your birth? that he was killed in the war? and he probably is dead, so it will take a living relative to id him. that being said, the national archives will have furthur info on these men. photos? does anyone know if their photos are with their papers?
