Looking for Outlaw Jacob Byard (aka Bayard)

I'm looking for any information on a Colorado outlaw named Jacob Byard or Bayard, who escaped from the Fairplay CO. jail (in Park County, CO) in March of 1884 and headed up to Buffalo, WY. He took refuge in a relative' home near there and a shoot-out was expected with the Park County Sheriff, who had tracked him. This info is from the Rocky Mtn. newspaper dated April 22, 1884 but Byard was never brought back to Colroado for trial according to Park County court records. Thanks for any help!

looking for records or info--Army scout Fred HANS 1876-1879
Some background info about Fred Hans for researcher’s reference--

"We-Chauch-Pe-Wan-Ge-Lah" =Lone Star, my grand uncle, Fred M. Hans, Army scout 1876-1879 (died in 1923) had a very colorful and well publicized but unsubstantiated or undocumented career. I am aware that many articles or stories have been published about him in many cities and various states and they mention many details about historical events that he was supposedly involved in. There is much info on him on the internet. However I am hoping someone may be able to find additional newspaper articles, official documents or government records in your court houses, local area libraries, historical societies, or other sources that reference Fred Hans (prior to 1900). I am looking for any info that might help me to verify or correlate any of the things that was said he did.

-reported (as a scout) to have tracked Sitting Bull into Canada and convinced him to return to US reservation.
-as a scout was supposedly present during chief Dull Knife’s escape from Ft Robinson
guard house--Thursday, Jan. 9th , 1879.
--as a scout, reportedly participated in the “Wounded Knee” massacre.
--was the official War Department investigator of “Custer’s Last Stand” at the Little Big Horn.
--was present or participated in numerous skirmishes or battles such as at Rosebud, Powder River, etc, with the Sioux or Cheyenne in Wyoming Territory during the 1870s and 1880s.
-- reported to have killed the notorious gang leader Shacknasty Jim at the infamous “Hole-in-the-Wall” in 1877.

Fred Hans was a scout and courier for the Army during what was known as the Sioux and Cheyenne Indian wars of the 1870s on the Northern or Western plains. Fred Hans scouted for General George Crook, Col. Nelson A. Miles, Col. Ranald Slidell MacKenzie, Lt Gen'l. Phil H. Sheridan, Gen'l A. H. Terry (among others). Fred was based with the army initially at the Red Cloud agency near the Camp or Ft Robinson and also the Spotted Tail agency. Fred Hans also frequently visited and assisted sheriffs and other military commanders or officials (Indian agents) at remote frontier outposts to search for and apprehend "renegade" Indians (including Sitting Bull) who escaped the reservations, or to search for, locate and return white women and their children who had been captured by the natives. During the later part of the 1870's as well as the 1880's, Fred "Lone Star" Hans was also able to use his scouting and gunfighting skills to track, locate, kill or arrest numerous notorious gang members of highwaymen (bandits), road agents, horse thieves, etc. who were killing the newly arriving (but trespassing) farmers or settlers. The bandits were also robbing gold prospectors or miners and their supply trains into the area of the Black Hills (or “Bad Lands”) including western Nebraska which had been previously designated by treaty as Indian Territory.

grateful for any info

Please contact

dadbrown_99@yahoo.com
Gus's wife Carrie passed away in 1921 and he moved to Michigan sometime after that (to be with his family, I'm assuming) and when he passed away in 1946 his remains were shipped back to WY. He and Carrie are buried next to each other. I was able to get a death certificate on Carrie that listed her parent's names, but I can't find anything on Gus before he changed his name. Before they lived in Wyoming, they lived in Nebraska, and before that Wisconsin.

I am familiar with Delores, Co. but received information about the sale of a cattle herd in Delores WY., and find no such place except Delores Draw, Which is a valley in the SE corner of WY. near the Neb. Line. The "Texas Trail" drive route did pass through that area, but I was looking for an actual Town.
Of course, in the cattle drive era, the sale of a herd in a valley near a major trail would have probably not been too unusual.
Robert

Niobrara ,Wy is probably Niobrara county in eastern Wyoming.
It is still lightly populated. I looked and did not find a Virgil Day family in 1910 or 1920 census for Wy. but did find a Virgil Day family in Ne. A son Roy was b. in 1915 in Scottsbluff, Ne which is not that far from Niobrara Co, If you could give a little more info on the family would be glad to look and see if I can find it.

I did not find him in any census. I went by what was on Ancestry. 1900 census he is living with family in Boone Co, Ne. He has a son 1915 born in Scottsbluff, Scottsbluff Co, NE. 1917 listed as living in Niobrara Co.Wy on WW1 Draft Reg. 1932 listed as dying in Converse Co. I could not find his name or his wife or children in any of the census, anywhere, which is probably what you have come across. I even looked using only first names. His father died in Converse Co, Wy. in 1919 . He dies there in 1932. He has siblings not far away, in Torrington,Wy.
I don't know if he was using a different last name or was missed by census takers for two census or what. There is a genealogy society in Douglas,Wy. I might suggest you contact them and see if they can help you.
My hunch is that they are in Wyoming or Ne. in 1910, 1920 and 1930. Start searching the counties that I have mentioned,Boone Co, Ne, Scottsbluff Co,Ne and Converse and Niobrara Co, Wy. Good Luck

I don't know if related or not but wouldn't be surprised.

My great great grandfather came from Sweden and moved to the US. His given name was Sven Svenson (sp?) and he later changed his name to Gus or August Hamilton. He married a woman from Denmark named Carrie or Karen Mortenson or Mortberg. They later moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming which is where they died. Carrie died in 1921 and Gus in 1946. They were both buried at Lakeview Cemetery. I am pretty sure I had emailed the cemetery but didn't get any info. I really don't have any information because I can't even find them coming into America since I am not sure of the name they came in on. Anything you can help me with would be GREATLY appreciated. I really want to get more info on these two! Thanks!!!
I see this is a very old post, but maybe your email account is still active. I was a classmate of Russell's from Francis Howell North High School in St. Charles, MO. Actually, I sat behind him in geometry class and was in Junior Achievement with him. If this is the Russell that was a fireman in the St. Louis area, we are talking about the same Russell. I do know another classmate who is a firefighter who worked with him at the time of his death, if you still need the info. I just found out about his death, as our 20 year reunion is upcoming later this year and we were discussing classmates who had passed.

You are correct that Wyoming was included underneath the canopy of Nebraska for the purposes of the 1860 census. Wyoming residents (10 pages worth) are accounted for at Fort Laramie Reservation (when checking the census just for Nebraska you select "unaccounted" counties to find Fort Laramie. A perusal of those ten pages though does not seem to me to show anyone with the Ainsworth surname. Perhaps Joseph was indeed born in Wyoming but his parents may have relocated elsewhere by the time of the census. The other possibility (perhaps remote) is that he was born in another place called Wyoming in another part of the USA as there are various counties called Wyoming (like in NY state).

Sheridan Press; May 8, 1971
MRS. LENT DIES IN HOSPITAL HERE
Mrs. Minnie Sarah Lent, wife of the late Frank Lent who died in October of 1969, of 320 E. College, died last night at Sheridan County Memorial Hospital.
She was born Dec. 12, 1891 in Platte County, Neb., and was 79. Mrs. Lent homesteaded in Johnson County in 1920 and in 1940 moved to Banner. In 1960 they came to Sheridan where they operated an apartment and trailer court. She was a member of Holy Name Church and St. Catherine Altar and Rosary Society.
The following brothers and sisters survive; Leo Mooney, Everett, Wash.; Roy and Dan Mooney, Sheridan; Eva Miller, Everett; Helen Lohse, Kaycee and Mr. Nevie Ward, Anaconda, Mont.
Rosary will be Monday at 7 p.m. at champions Funeral Home and services are Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. from Holy Name. Burial is in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.

It does not appear that there was a Maxine in Helen's children. Could Maxine have been Helen's sister?
In Mr. Lent's obit it states he and Minnie were married April 15, 1940.
