This one is worth a try. There were not too many John Vernon Benham born 1896 or 1897. Also i don't see a 1920 Census for him in Wyoming. I found one as a mess man who worked in a Ships' kitchen in 1920.

John Vernon Benham, born 1897, USA (no state listed),was on a ship going from Anterp, Belgium to new York City in 1920. Ship's name W H Tillford. he work as a messman in a ship's kitchen. I would think he was a good candidate as He was the only John Vernon Benham I could find. Maybe he stayed on the east coast.
