Interesting marker you show.

I have been in contact with the museum and am planning on calling next week and talking to the archivist when she is in.
Thank you!
In 2010, I photographed all Meeteetse Cemetery headstones (the cemetery by Meeteetse - not the old one on Meeteetse Creek). I did not locate any Mikkelson headstones, however, there are some that are not marked, and some where the headstone is unreadable. Interestingly, I did photograph the attached hand-made stone for someone named Nels Nicklson.

Contact the Town of Meeteetse for burial records at 307-868-2278.

If this family lived in or near Meeteetse, Wyoming, contact the Meeteetse Museum 307-868-2423 http://www.meeteetsemuseums.org/. They have an archives with files on most of the families who lived in the area, including numerous obits and some photos. Do not wait until you are in Meeteetse to make contact - the museum hours are less in the fall and winter.

You may also want to contact the Park County (Wyoming) Historical Archives at 307-527-8530, as they have archive files and some photos as well.

Good luck with your search.

I agree with mountainmama. She lived in the same place as Nels did. I bet there is a relationship there. Also there is an Anna ( could be short for Joanna) Mikkelson buried in the Willow Grove Cemetery in 1908. Unsure of birth and death year. The info only went by burial date. Maybe they moved her there.

One more added bit of info. There is a Mikkleson in Meeteetse who died before 1910. She was a widow and was living with her daughter Maggie Morgan wife of Thomas Morgan in Meeteetse. Her name is listed as Joanna and was a widow born abt 1838 Denmark. She could be Nels mother.

There is a Marie Mikkelson in the Willow Grove cemetery in Buffalo but it lists her birthdate as Aug 6, 1872 in Denmark and death as Apr 8, 1944. Could the date you have be wrong? A 1940 census shows her living in Buffalo with Mikkel Mikkelson age 30. Any help there? I have looked on findagrave in most of the small surrounding cemeteries but not have had any luck. I will keep trying though.

Henry P Rothwell married Sophie Mikkleson and they had a daughter Kate and a son later. They lived in Buffalo as he was in the Army . But he had a huge ranch in Hot Springs county and his wife would not live there. Marie that is buried in Buffalo I believe is the estranged wife of Nels. He use to come back to Buffalo to visit his son . They had divorced. He was a drunk. He and his brother both were sheep herders. It is more than possible that the mother was taken back to Buffalo for burial. Check with Nancy Jennings in Johnson Co and she may be able to help.

If she is buried on the ranch there would be no record. But I suspect they may have taken her to Buffalo where her daughter and son in law lived. Try there. Very few graves are on the Find A Grave site in Wyoming. We are very rural.

I believe she was buried on the ranch that Nels had. The Meeteetse Museum will have those cemetery records. By the way her naturalization papers are in Laramie County WY. The Wy state archives has a copy. She came with her children and a daughter who married Rothwell.

Gerald,

Your find of Sarah McKilligan's death registration in Washington state with correct parents is a great find and confirms her marriage to McKilligan. There is a widow Sarah McKilligan, b. 1856 in Ontario living in Red Deer, AB with sons Roy and William in the 1916 census. The sons are listed with Father Alex and mother Mary in Alberta in the 1906 census. I suggest that this is our Sarah and that she married Alex McKilligan between 1907, the death of George Buxton and 1916.

Sarah Jane Fisher/Buxton, b.1856 is in Goderich for 1901 census and likely there until 1907 when George Buxton dies. also in the 1901 census is Sarah Buxton, b. 1864 in ON, in Vancouver. There is a Sarah Buxton, b.1863 in ON, in Winnipeg in the 1891 census. I wonder if the Sarah F Buxton, b. 1867 in ON living in Cody Wyoming for the 1910 census is not this other Sarah. The date of birth is certainly closer.

Is there any family legends or info regarding how Sarah, at the earliest age of 51 when George died in 1907, moved out west to join the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show?

Tal Fisher

Thanks for suggestion. I did try a couple of years ago without any success but will try again.

Since posting this query I found Sarah's death on February 11, 1923 in Sedro-Woolley (Rural), Skagit, Washington, USA recorded as Sarah Mckilligan age 67 years 7 months 3 days born 1856 with the correct parents shown so I know it is her.

Hoping to see how long she stayed in Cody as Housekeeper working for hotel operated by Louis Decker. (Ancestry transcription shows Sarah incorrectly as a boarder but she appears to be an employee.) Hotel appears to be at 155 Sheridan and Ancestry suggests Louis Decker wife Mary is Mary Cody sister to Buffalo Bill Cody.

Any suggestions from you or other posters as to local Cody records that might give some more clues?

BUXTON, McKILLIGAN/McKILLICAN, Sarah Jane

I am hoping someone can direct me towards local Park County resources to find more information on the above relative. I am researching Sarah Jane McKILLIGAN/McKILLICAN, previously BUXTON and previously maiden FISHER whom I believe died in Cody, Wyoming. Sarah also known as Sadie, was born January 04, 1856 Colborne Township, County of Huron, ON (Ontario), Canada to Joseph Fisher and Nancy Pannebecker. She married George Buxton born January 19, 1853 Goderich Township, Huron County, ON who died April 07, 1907 344 Maria St, Clinton, ON. The couple ran a hotel in Goderich and apparently had a son Louis who moved away. After George died Sarah moved to Cody, Wyoming where she shows up on 1910 census working in a local hotel as a housekeeper. The census entry is shown below, Two dates for here immigration are shown of 1908 and 1905. I believe the correct one is 1908. 1910 United States Federal Census Name: Sarah F Buxton Age in 1910: 43 Birth Year: abt 1867 [1867] Birthplace: Canada [Canada English] Home in 1910: Cody, Park, Wyoming Race: White Gender: Female Immigration Year: 1908 [1905] Relation to Head of House: Boarder Marital Status: Widowed Father's Birthplace: Canada [Canada English] Mother's Birthplace: Canada [Canada English] Neighbors: Household Members: Name Age Louis E Decker 50 Mary C Decker 53 Edward D Connery 33 Robert Velick 23 Jess Minson 22 Hilda Friedenberg 22 James Ellery 35 Sarah F Buxton 43 Marie Baumgartel 37 Flora Morrow 23 Lillas Schrader 40 Julia Lansing 40 Source Citation: Year: 1910; Census Place: Cody, Park, Wyoming; Roll: T624_1747; Page: 6A; Enumeration District: 0023; ; FHL microfilm: 1375760. Based on this Sarah was in Cody from 1908 to 1910. She apparently remarried some time after this an unknown McKilligan/McKillican and died sometime between then and 1924. She led a colorful life during this period and apparently joined Buffalo Bill Wild West show and did trick horse and pistol shooting as some of her props including a leather whip and silver spurs were sent to my great grandmother. 1924 is the best guess of living relatives. I couldn't find Sarah on 1920 census but she could have been travelling. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Dooley in Park Wyoming

I am working on my Dooley genealogy again. Looking for my Dooleys that went West! They stopped a few years in Fannin County Texas. Then they were in Gavin Oklahoma and Park County and Washakie County Wyoming. Also some were in Arkadelphia Arkansas.

Benjamin Franklin Dooley ( born 1848 Georgia)
In 1871 in Polk County Ga, Ben marries Lizzie Venable.
1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 Ben resides in Arkadelphia Arkansas. In 1930 heresides in Gavin Oklahoma with his daughter. He is a farmer, a grocer, and contstable into his 70’s. After his wife dies he moves in with his daughter in Gavin Oklahoma. She is divorced and runs a hotel. He died in 1936.
Benjamin Franklin Dooley has two children
1. C. Ed or Edward or Edwin Dooley (13 Mar 1874 ) lived in Bonham Texas, he married Laura (McNiel). C E Dooley Bride's Name: Laura Mcneal Marriage Date: 18 Dec 1898 I found this marriage record in Fannin County. He was a mechanic. He died at on 27 Jan 1922 at age 47 of tuberculosis, and is buried in the Dooley plot at Carson Cemetery, Fannin Texas. His father B F Dooley gave the information on his death certificate.
2. Jenny Dooley who married a Dickenson, and later divorced. They lived in Oklahoma. Jennie Dooley Dickson is buried at Oaklawn cemetery, Garvin Oklahoma. Dec 21, 1876 - May 19, 1956

After her husband died, I always wondered what happened to Laura McNiel Dooley. I think three of her four children were born in Fannin County Texas
I found a birth certificate of a child- Benjamin Franklin Dooley, born 1910 in Texas. The birth certificate information where she filed to get the one from Texas, states she had a total of 4 children and one had died.
In the 1930 census I think I found her in Sayre, Beckham, Oklahoma
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XCQY-8L1
Lara Duley widow born 1879 Tennessee
Benjamine F Duley 20 born abt 1910 Texas father born in Arkansas, mother in Tennessee
Leonard E Duley 16 born abt 1914Texas father born in Arkansas, mother in Tennessee
Christine Duley 14 born abt 1916 Texas father born in Arkansas, mother in Tennessee
Cecil R Duley 8 born abt 1921Colorado father born in Arkansas, mother in Tennessee

In 1940 I think I found her in Park Wyoming.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VT4B-M51 Family Number: 4 Sheet Number and Letter: 1ALine Number: 11
Residence in 1935: Rural, Roger Mills, Oklahoma
Laura Dooley 69 Born Tennessee, Cecil R. Dooley 18 Colorado

Ben in 1940 is living in Park, Wyoming, United States https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VT4Y-YNH Family Number: 30
Sheet Number and Letter: 2A Line Number: 23
Born 1910 Texas , he has a family.

I found Christine Dooley in 1940 is living in Washakie, Wyoming
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VTHM-P3C
24 divorced female waitress, lodger born 1916 in Texas. It states she was also living there in 1935. She later marries and dies in a car wreck in the 40’s.

I think this is the correct family. Does anyone know someone who researches this line?
This would answer a lot of my questions as to what happened to these people.

Hi. My name is Holly Elizabeth Brown. I am the great great granddaughter of Isabel Webster and William 'Bill' Andrew Blake. I found your information by searching my great grandmother's name, Elizabeth Webster Blake. I then saw the inquiry you post dated February 2000. My grandmother, Elizabeth Webster's daughter, Helen Elizabeth Brown, lives next door to me in Colton, California. Her brother Albert is currently visiting from Wichita, Kansas with his wife Dorothy. I would be happy to offer any information and learn more about our family history. I also have several unanswered questions.

Holly E.
If the memorial isn't listed in Riverside Cemetery index on their site, call them at Phone: 307.587.6662.

You can also do a search for an obit at: http://www.wyonewspapers.org/.

You may also call the Park County Historical Archives in Cody. They will do a search for a fee.

Good luck.

Fairview Cemetery in Cody has a website with an index of burials. http://www.riversidecemeterydistrict.com/index.html. I searched for Marie and got 60+, so you can sift through to see which one may be her.

If you can't find her that way, since you have her death date, I would contact the Cody Enterprise newspaper, and ask them to look up her obit. If they won't, call the Park County Library in Cody and ask them to look. You could also call Park County Historical Archives and ask them to look, as well, but someone told me they charge a fee - this might be a last resort.

For on line records, you could do a search for her on FindAGrave.com to see if there is a memorial and headstone photo. If there is a memorial, but no headstone photo, you can request a local take a photo of her headstone and post it to the memorial.

Good luck.

I am surprised too. I've been there to do research, and they were very helpful.

Be sure to contact the Meeteetse Museum Archives (contact info above in my previous post).

Also try: http://www.wyonewspapers.org/.
I have found literally hundreds of obits and articles here. It is a free service.

The Wyoming State Historical Archives are a great resource. I usually call / email them what I'm looking for. They call/email me a couple of days later telling me what they've found. They mail me the documents and a bill for $.25/copy - no research fee. They are very professional.

Good luck.

I am surprised that the reference librarians aren't interested in helping people look up obituaries. The librarians here in Natrona County are really nice. There are other counties that have a genealogy section on the library website. Good luck on finding the information you need.

hi.. as I said in my reply yesterday, I tried the park county library first - but they just referred me to the county archives, who charge $20 to look something up.
Thank you for the link to the State archives... I just sent them an email after reading your suggestion.

Try the Wyoming State Archives at http://wyoarchives.state.wy.us/research/. They have death certficates and marriage certificates over 50 years old. I believe they have copies of the newspaper obits as well. I would also suggest contacting the public library in Cody at phone: 307-527-1880
fax: 307-527-1888
cody@parkcountylibrary.org. I hope this helps you in your search. I look up obits in the Casper, Natrona, Wyoming newspapers.

I first contacted the county library & they referred me to the county archives - & this is what I found there:

"For researchers who cannot visit in person, we can conduct a search for you. The cost is $20.00 for research time, including up to 20 photocopies."

I think $20 is pretty expensive to get an obit, that's why I posted on this board... hoping somebody could go there in person & get me the obits. I'd be happy to pay the copy costs, etc... a few dollars is fine, but I can't afford $20.
