As I go through the digitized church registers for St Mary's Cathedral in Kingston, Ontario,(1800's) I am perplexed by the vast number of baptisms of infants noted as being born to "unknown parents." I first wondered if they were born illegitimately and were "left on the church steps," but there are too many of them. I'm finding many references to babies born at the hospital to unknown parents. How can that be? I am thinking perhaps it's recorded that way to indicate that the parents are not RC, especially when I noted some as born to "unknown parents" at the "English Hospital."
