There was a Normington laundry/dry cleaners in Marshfield, Wood Co. Wisconsin about 50-60 years ago. I no longer live in the area and have no idea whether it still exists. I do know a branch of the Normington Laundry in Beloit (Rock Co.) WI closed just a short time ago.

Clean break for Normingtons
Dry cleaners close doors after 75 years
By Debra Jensen-De Hart
Business Editor

In 1867, a Beloit College student established a laundry service at 424 Broad St. It was later operated by Eric Noren and after that, by Merton Stanton and Charley Barnard. In 1928, the plant was purchased by Frank Normington Jr. of Marshfield. Mr. Normington moved to Beloit and resided in the 700 block of Wisconsin Avenue with his wife and daughter.

Such began the story of Normington Laundry and Dry Cleaners, (426) Broad St., according to Lucile Noll Normington, mother of Frank Normington III.

After 75 years in the business however, Frank and his wife, Mary Normington, are closing shop.

Friday marked the last day for intake of laundry or dry cleaning. The building has been sold and the couple now is working on selling the rest of the contents as well as getting the rest of their customers to come in and pick up their clean laundry and dry cleaning.

Frank said the store would remain open so the items could be distributed, today, Monday, Tuesday, and Friday.

``It's kind of sad,'' he acknowledged Friday from the store.

But the Normingtons also said it is time.

Frank suffered a heart attack and a stroke about a year ago and about two weeks ago, suffered another stroke.

When the store closes for good, it will be the last of seven family-owned plants which at one time existed in Marshfield, Madison and other parts of the state.

But for all of Frank's life it provided the family in which he grew up and later his own family with an income and a livelihood, for which the couple is grateful.

For Frank, learning the business began at an early age.

``I always say I learned to walk by holding on to a laundry basket,'' he said jokingly.

The fact is, Frank was working in the plant at the age of 14 because his father needed help.

He began his day before heading to Roosevelt Junior High School by helping out in the morning and then pedaled back to the shop after school to help his father close up.

Frank worked with his father until his father's death in 1977.

``The depression of the '30s was a rough period for all of Beloit,'' Frank's mother continued in her history of the business. ``Mr. Normington spent many a Sunday doing repairs and planning improvements. When times finally improved, dry cleaning equipment was added to the plant.''

Other difficult times included the World War II years, because help was hard to get and there was gasoline rationing.

Over the years, employees were added to include 45 and five truck routes were added covering Beloit as well as South Beloit and Rockton. A special commercial route covered the downtown offices and the college, according to Lucile Normington's account.

Perhaps the most difficult time for the family-owned operation, however, came in 1967 when a fire swept through the business, destroying it.

``Mr. Normington stood in ankle-deep water watching 40 years of effort go up in smoke. ... He kept repeating, `we will just have to rebuild.''' his wife wrote.

By January of 1968, the plant was rebuilt, Frank III said.

Of his long career in the business, he said it has been a continual learning process.

From washroom chemistry to electricity and on to steam fittings, ``you learned everything as a kid from other people,'' he recalled.

On Friday, Joan Hilton of Milton, a friend of the Normingtons, helped catalog vintage clothing left behind at the store and she encouraged her friends to sell them through E-bay on the Internet.

Several unclaimed racks of clean clothing from several decades remain in a back room of the store. One vintage wedding dress appears to be from the 1920s or 1930s, Hilton said.

After finishing up loose ends with the business, the couple said they would like to travel. One site they will head for is the U.S.S. Constitution, they said.

Hello,

I am not related. Just trying to help out. You have me confused as to who is who. Was Robert Normington married to Camille E.Oberweiser, daughter of Edward Oberweiser and Camille Pilette? You have Camille Pilette as a daughter of Robert Normington and Camille E.Oberweiser. Wouldn't Camille Pilette be the mother to Camille E.Oberweiser?
Did Camille E.Oberweiser marry Robert Normington before she married Edward H. Dodd?

In any case, I may have some info that may or may not be helpful.

From what I found, both Camille and Edward were living in Menasha, Winnebago County, Wisconsin in the 1900 and 1905 census. In 1900, Camille was listed as Camille Lerckenbach, Sister-in-law to Herman Lerkenback (Luchenbach), whose wife was Minnie Wahle. In 1905, Camille was listed as Millie Wahle, Sister-In-Law to German (Herman) Luckenbach, whose wife was Minnie Wahle.

I seen the posting by Sue Bowman who suggested that her great-great grandparents, Ben and Alma Kaerwer Wahle, adopted Camille. I think there is some truth to this story, but it looks like Minnie (Wahle) Luchenbach and her husband Herman took in Camille to live with them.

The 1930 census states that Edward and Camille were married about 1906. Edward was age 50, married age 26 in 1930. Camille was age 46, married age 22 in 1930.

***Camille Pilette married Edward Oberweiser in Winnebago County, Wisconsin on August 06, 1906. But she was married under the name Camille M. Wahle. Herman Luckenbach and Minnie Wahle also married in Winnebago County.

Mrs. Oberweiser

Mrs. Camille Oberweiser, 87, widow of Edward A. Oberweiser, a former president of the Whiting-Plover Paper Co., died recently at her home in Phoenix, Ariz.
Mrs. Oberweiser, the former Camille Pilette, was born in New York.
Her husband was with Whiting-Plover nearly 30 years. He came here in 1908 from Menasha and was general manager of the firm in 1912 when a supply of pure undergroung water was tapped in the Plover River Valley, enabling the company to improve the quality of its paper.

The oberweisers went from here to Appleton, where in 1938 Mr. Oberweiser headed a group that bought control of the Fox River Paper Co.

I was in Oshkosh, WI doing research and found the marriage license between Camille M. Wahle and Edward A. Oberweiser. I have a copy of it if you would like me to send you a private email with the attachment. On it, it states that Camille's father's name was Adolf (possibly Adolph) Wahle and Mathilde Muhlenbein. Camille was born in New York according to this license. It took place August 6, 1906 ane the witnesses were
Clara Lueckenbach and C.J. Oberweiser. The wedding took place in Menasha, WI. I hope this helps you some..
