According to Civil War records, Katherine Staabe Wolf died in Waukesha County in May 1868. Anyone willing to check the books at the register of deeds and see if you can find her. I'm trying to find her parents names, what she died of, and where she's buried. She had a baby 5 mos before she died so probably complications.

I am looking for any information about Mary Grant, born in 1833 in Washington County, New York. She is the daughter of Billings Grant and Sarah E. Granger. About 1850 the family moved from upstate New York to Waukesha Co., WI into the vacinity of New Berlin.

On August 21, 1889, Billings Grant died, but Mary was one of his surviving children. He had 14 children, two of whom died prior to his death. Billings, Sarah, two sons, Benona and Walter were members of the Free Will Baptist Church in Prospect Hill. It is assumed that his daughters were also.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for Perry's in Waukesha, Pewaukee area. Miss Alice Perry (b. Vt. 1838, d. 1894) was a schoolteacher who left Windsor County Vermont shortly after the 1850 census with her family. Her mother was Elizabeth (b. Mass., 1801), and her father was Martin Perry (b. Leominster, Mass. 4 June, 1796). Alice had a brother George Perry, who was also a schoolteacher. Any information on them would be helpful. Although Alice d. in Lake Bluff Illinois, 6 Sept., 1894 (age 57), I think she is buried in Waukesha.

My grandmother's younger brother, Archie Heath Turk, died in Wisconsin in 1924. According to the 1920 census, he had a wife, Hulda/Huldah/Hilda, b. ca 1882 in Wisconsin and two sons: Arthur b. ca 1915 and Harold b. ca 1914.

I cannot trace these boys beyond that 1920 census but there is a record of Arthur H. (Heath?) Turk b. ca 1913 who d. in Waukesha County on 6 Dec 1979.

Is there anyone living in Waukesha County who might know something about this family or who can tell me how to confirm of deny that he might belong to my family? Knowing the date of his death, would an obit be available at a local library?

Thank you.

Jody Thomson

I am still hoping to hear from someone who might know anything about Esther Marczinke, my paternal grandmother, who was from either Wisconsin or Minnesota. She gave birth to my father, Lyle Foster, in Minneapolis/St. Paul, and then abandoned him as an infant. It is my understanding that she never married Charles Foster, my paternal grandfather, and that she returned to a husband and children she already had in Wisconsin. I don't know if Marczinke was her maiden name, or a married name.

My father was raised by his father and paternal grandmother, Constance Foster, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, until the age of 10. He never had any (known) siblings, and he spent the remainder of his life in South Texas. I have never known any more about my grandmother, and the Fosters in Minnesota were never able to shed any light. My late father never knew her or anything of her wherabouts, which was always painful .

I am sure she is deceased by now, but I would like to find her family, which is my family, and come to know more about my ancestry.

Seeking information on any of these people in Wisconsin early on. My gg2 grandfather d.y. probably en route to WI. Almira (family name) and Clarissa could (guessing) be a brother's children. Any sons must have married along the way west from New York. Looking for any descendants:
Almira LAURENCE & William S. ROOT married in Waukesha County, WI, October 21, 1847. Clarissa LAURENCE & James J. TEW/TREW? both of Brookfield mar April 10, 1855. Amanda LAWRENCE & Tobias OSBURN mar 1845. All seem to have gone from Wisconsin. Uncle Alec and Aunt Dalinda KENT LAWRENCE of Brookfield are buried in Prairie Home Cemetery. In WI by 1848. Dalinda was dau of Peleg and Alice KENT who are bur in Rathbun Cemetery, Chautauqua Co., NY. The two known daughters of Alec were Alice b 1835 NY and Sabra b 1838 NY. Where did Alice go? Sabra w/o Augustus SPRINGSTEAD Jr was widowed during the Civil War. Also bur Prairie Home. The Springsteads and Lawrences seemed to travel together. The family spent some time in MI before arriving in Kenosha - then to Brookfield. They were on adjoining farms in Brookfield. Neighbors were J HOWARD, O. S. RATHBUN, F and R PHILLIPS, E OSBURN, familiar Chaut Co NY surnames.

Photo was taken in about 1912/1913, and the names given are William Lemitz Sr., Emma; Edward and William Jr. “Buck” (sons of William Sr. & Amelia/Emma); Clara (wife of Edward, who holds daughter Mable); Emily Lemitz with Vi; Henry Lemitz; Viola Lemitz (dau of William Jr. & Emma); Ella (Lemitz) Titze (and husband Charles Titze) and the children of Charles & Ella: Walter, Edna, Floyd & Lillian Titze; and “Mrs. Titze” (mother of Charles).

I found the families of this Lemitz family and the Titze family in Waukesha (Waukesha Co.) He immigrated to Wisconsin and died in Waukesha, Waukesha, Wisconsin in 1877, He was a shoemaker and his son Gabariel was a lawyer in the same area. I know he was born in Prussia but do not have the exact location. I was hoping I would find that information on some wisconsin records. I have found this surname at Saint Matthais Church but nothing more than just that. He married Catherine Kratz who's dad, Valentine, helped settle the area (i think) I would love information.

If you're interested, the details are at the following link: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/index.html

Here is the Waukesha County link:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/wisconsin/waukesha.htm

This is a great summer project. I have done several in Ogle County, Illinois and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Please join us to make this project successful. Be sure to contact me if you choose to transcribe a cemetery so we don't duplicate our efforts.

Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.

Thank you.

Hauswirths and Romangs in Waukesha Co and Forest Hill Cemetery

Hello everyone, I'm looking for information on a Hauswirth family that lived in Waukesha for a time from the mid to late 1800's. I would particularly like to obtain plot information and photos/transcriptions of Rudolf Hauswirth Sr and Catherine Romangs's tombstones in Forest Hill Cemetery in Pewaukee, Waukesha Co, Wisconsin. Does anyone know how I could go about getting this information?

I would, however also like anything anyone might have on or know about any Hauswirths and Romangs in Waukesha Co. Additional information on the family is as follows:

Rudolf Hauswirth
born: Oct 11 1806 in Saanen, Bern, Switzerland
married: Nov 06 1826 in Saanen, Bern, Switzerland
to: Catherine Romang
died: Aug 10 1872 in Brookfield, Waukesha County, Wisconsin, USA
buried: Forest Hill Cemetery, Pewaukee, Waukesha Co, Wisconsin

Catherine Romang
born: Jan 18 1807 in Saanen, Bern, Switzerland
died: Apr 21 1885 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, USA
buried: Forest Hill Cemetery, Pewaukee, Waukesha Co, Wisconsin

Children:
Rudolf Hauswirth Jr
John R Hauswirth Sr
Maria Hauswirth
Christian Hauswirth
C Hauswirth
Magdalena Hauswirth
Marianne Hauswirth
Simon Hauswirth

Catherine Romang came to the United States in July 1855 from Saanen, Switzerland and her husband is presumed to have immigrated about the same time and settled in Waukesha Co, Wisconsin.

Most, if not all of Rufolf and Catherine's children were born in Saanen, but at least John R, Christian, Simon, and Marianne made it to America and came through Wisconsin. I'm not sure about the rest of them, but if anyone has knows whether or not the rest of them made it also, or if any of them are buried in Wisconsin, I would be very interested.

John R Hauswirth Sr was married to Kunigonda Zwahlen, also from Saanen, Switzerland, and had two children before they immigrated to the US: Catherine Hauswirth and John R Hauswirth JR. While in Wisconsin, they had the children: Lana Hauswirth, Robert Hauswirth, Bertha (Hauswirth) Rowand, and Herman Hauswirth.

John R Sr's family, as well as his brothers Simon and Christian, moved from Wisconsin to Montana somewhere between the 1860's and 1870's.

If anyone knows about this family, their descendents, or of any other Hauswirths in Wisconsin please leave a post or check out my website thebluebox.tribalpages.com for more information on the Hauswirths.

Thanks.

Census Information

I am trying to determine when James and Aurelia Olney and daughter Lucy Saxton moved to Waukesha. I know they were in NY in 1865, and in Wisconsin in 1870. My first step is to find exactly where they lived. The 1870 Census indicates they lived in Waukesha, Waukesha County. There is no Enumeration District or Street listed on the page, but the Enumerator was Frank Putney. Is there any way to determine where his area was? My goal is to try to locate churches or other such institutions, and to find out what newspaper served the area. Lucy was the first wife of my g-grandfather, Daniel Dewitt Saxton, but not my g-grandmother. They had a daughter Mabel, b. abt 1866/67, in Wisconsin, (according to the census). She died in 1874, in Waukesha. (I have newspaper story, but no obit), Daniel never appears in any record I have found in
Wisconsin with them. After her parents' death, between 1880 and 1900, Lucy moved to Iowa, where she died after 1910. From 1865 to 1882, I have found no record of my g-grandfather's whereabouts.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Samuel Cook (or Cooke) born abt.1779 Norfolk, UK, died 20 April 1850 Waukesha

I have a document that states that Samuel Cook died at about 06:00 on 20 April 1850 before he could sign his will.

He was born and lived in the Loddon, Norfolk area of England and baptised on 7 Feb 1779.

He appears on the England Census of 7 June 1841. Sometime between then and April 1850, he has obviously made his way across the Atlantic (aged 60+), leaving his family behind.

He used both surnames - Cooke and Cook and I am intrigued to learn how and when he got to Waukesha and if I can, then ascertain what made him take the journey.

Any information or suggestions greatly received.

Thank you,

Jonathan

His father Frank was a newspaper reporter. Does anyone have an idea of what newspaper this could have been for? It would have been in the early 1900s. Also, Clarence was a grocery man. Was there a store he may have owned before he left Wisconsin in the early 1900s?

A separate photo dated June 9, 1940 shows Catherine Pynn (Ed's daughter?) in cap and gown. Any leads would be appreciated.

Waukesha Co. "Pigsville"?

Was there an area, or village, called "Pigsville", maybe in Menomonee Falls township, Waukesha Co., as far back as the 1870s? Some Milwaukee Co. records I've found list Pigsville, Menomonee Falls, as a place of birth. An earlier record for the same person indicates "Pigsville, Washington Co.". There are also some discrepancies between references to Hartland versus Hartford, as a place of birth, so I'm looking at both areas. [I do known there was a "Pigsville" neighborhood in Milwaukee located in the Menomonee River valley.]

Gary Rebholz
Milwaukee

I'm trying to find some information for my husband. His grandfather, Jack Curtis Williams (possibly an alias) was born on 17 October 1907/1908 in Hartland, Waukesha, Wisconsin. We don't know anything about him other than he married Blanche Louise Young on 7 May 1938 in Idaho. She died in childbirth on 6 September 1939. Jack apparently abandoned the baby boy, Ronald B Williams (my husband's deceased father), and the baby was raised by his maternal grandparents, Andrew and Pricilla Young in Ririe, Idaho. If anyone has any information to share or any ideas on how to get more info, I'd appreciate it. By the way, we do have Jack's Social Security Number.
Thank you,
Evy Williams

The letter talks about Goldie, Chuck, Glady, and Grace. I also found a photo of Goldie. The letter is signed "Love from Mom" My grandmother never lived in Wisconsin as far as I know, and her name wasn't Newbury. None of the other names mentioned are familiar either.
Probert Family around 1900 in Oconomowoc

I am searching for information on the Probert family around 1900. In particular, they had a young girl working as a servant. Her name was Anna Sylvester, age 11. She was the daughter of Albert Sylvester who had emigrated in 1897 from Germany. I believe she landed in Oconomowoc because his youngest brother, Otto Sylvester, lived there and was a florist in Oconomowoc. I can not trace her after this date.
She also had a younger brother, Gustav, who is listed in the 1905 census as living with an Aunt Henriette Hackbarth in Oconomowoc. Any info would be helpful. Thanks. Louise

Any connection to the following? If so, write!

My grandfather was Theodore Francis JANSEN, born July 11, 1870 in Muskego, Wisconsin, USA. His siblings were Adelaide (married John LOTHARIUS), Mary (married Jacob SCHWARTZ), August (married Mary JONAS), Bernard (married Elizabeth JONAS and later, after her death, married Mary NAGELBRECHER), Herman (married Christine COOK) and Adolph.

Theodore's parents were Franz (Francis) JANSEN born in Duesseldorf, Germany in 1833 and Mary (Marie) KOENEN VERHEIN. Franz and Mary lived in Huisberden prior to departing for the USA in 1864 on the ship "New York". Mary had with her a son by a previous marriage, Heinrich KOENEN.

My grandmother was Anna SCHILZ, born September 18, 1870, in Franklin, Wisconsin, USA. Her siblings were Catherine, Theresa, Mary, Mathias, Anthony (married Magdeline LONG), Peter (married Mary VANDENBOOM) and William (married Catherine MUELLER). Anna's parents were Mathias SCHILZ and Mary (Maria) FREY.

We think Mathias SCHILZ came from Idenheim and then Tremport, Prussia. We also feel that Mary FREY came from Munderkingen, also in Prussia. But we are not sure of either.

Any information would be very helpful!

Art Jansen

I searching for any information on the Patrick GRIER family located in Mapleton Twp, near Oconomowoc in Waukesha Co, WI in 1860. Family members:

Patrick (50), Ire; Mary (47), Ire; Patrick (18), IRE; Bridget (18), NY; Mary (11), WI; Catherine (8), WI; Peter (4), WI. Also living with the family was a Cecily Rogan (75), Ire.

I am tracing a family story told to me 25 years ago that my grandfather's Irish immigrant grandmother met her second husband while in Mapleton Twp (near Oconomowoc) visiting relatives of her deceased first husband. Her first husband was Jim Rogan. In 1860, her second husband's brother was living just four 'doors' from this Grier family (and Cecily Rogan). It seems to fit. Is Patrick Grier's wife, Mary, the daughter of this Cecily Rogan? If so, are there any of her GRIER/ROGAN descendents around today? Where in Ireland did the Rogan's come from? And many more questions for the right person!

Parents were Leonard Kiehnbaum and Clara Wegner.
Many relatives are buried in Cross Lutheran Church cemetary.

Any information on living relatives or ancestors would be appreciated.

I live in Florida, so research in Wisconsin is difficult.

Thanks,

Sid Meyer
I am interested in William Webster Collins. He was born about 1853 in Oconomowoc, one of the sons of Washington W. Collins and Julia A. Campbell. William worked for the C, M, and St. P railroad as a young man and eventually moved to California, where he died some time after 1930. I think I have found him in the 1920 and 1930 censuses in Pasadena and Long Beach respectively.

Any additional information about his life and accomplishments would be gratefully appreciated.

Church records in Waukesha County

I need some help finding the right Lutheran church for my SCHROEDER ancestors. Emma was born in Wauwatosa (1869), Anna and Karolina were born in Brookfield (1871 and 1873), and Maria was born in Elm Grove (1876). Is there a Lutheran church in the area where the family might have worshipped and all the children were baptised? My thought is that even though they may have moved around a lot, their church would have remained the same.

This SCHROEDER family moved to Clark County, Wisconsin sometime between 1876 and 1881.
Thanks.
Cindy

I would appreciate any help in finding any information on the death of William P. Murphy, born 4/10/1859 at Plymouth, Wisconsin. He was killed by a train in Waukesha, Wisconsin (I'm not sure when but probably in the 1880s or early 1890s)and may be buried there. He was Catholic and worked for the railroad when he was killed leaving six orphans.
