Finally after several months I'm back to doing research. I live in Walworth CO & will be going to the courthouse within the next week. I can do lookups for Birth, marriage, death records for anyone who needs them. I can also do copies of obits for the Lake Geneva Regional News going back to 1870 I believe. If you need anything please respond to THIS message with at least the Surname, year range and which record you want info from. I can look directly at these vitals and write down the contents for free. If your ancestor is there and you want the official copy, you'll have to send for the record.
I'm working on my husband's family the Edward H. Winkleman family who lived in Whitewater from the early 1900's until his grandmother passed in 1991. Would love to get in contact with anyone else researching this family. I know Edward H. Sr. owned and operated a dairy that he sold in the late 1940's early '50s to Hawthorn Melody. Any and all information would be appreciated.

Most of my relatives are from the East Troy and Delavan areas, so my web site has a heavy focus on those areas, but there are also things like newspaper abstracts from the late 1800's and early 1900's that include news from every part of Walworth county. The address is http://www.mid-wi.com/genealogy

If anyone is related to me, I would really appreciate hearing from you.

CRAVER with his wife HENRIETTA (ALDRICH) migrated from New York State to Walworth County, Wis.
The following info I can find:

The 1850 Federal Census Index shows PETER L. CRAVER in Walworth County, Bloomfield Twp., Wisconsin. The 1860 Wisconsin 1860 Federal Census Index shows Peter L. in Fond Du Lac County, 2 W Ripon Twp., Wisconsin. I have also found him in the Land Records. My problem is I cannot find his parentage -- There are about 3 dates of birth that could be his, but I cannot find any proof of any of them. Help!!

I'm looking for information regarding Lyman SPOONER, b. 1795 Barnard, Windsor, VT. LDS site gives info he died in Lynn MI, however, I can't find any info proving he ever left Walworth Cty, WI. Maybe a typo? LDS info says Lyman died 1865. I believe Lyman may possibly be my ggg-grandfather. His sons, James Garrison, William F and Willis appear on the Humboldt Cty, IA census index in 1870. Another son, Franklin D, married in River Falls, St. Croix in 1855.

I believe James Garrison's son, James Elmer, and William's daughter, Eva Arstella, to be my g-grandparents. Any info pertainng to Spooners would be appreciated.

Margo Spooner Rouette

KITTILSON / Sugar Creek Luthern Cemetery

I am looking for the date of death for OLE KITTILSON who lived in Sugar Creek from around 1845 until ?. His wife, Andrea, died 31 Jan 1899 and is buried in the Luthern Norwegian Cemetery in Sugar Creek, according to her death certificate. I have received from the Walworth County Genealogical Society a listing for Kittilson / Kittleson burials in several cemeteries, but Sugar Creek was not included. Would appreciate any info on how I can find a transcription of this cemetery so I can determine Ole's date of death. The last census he appears in is 1870 in Millard, Sugar Creek in Walworth. Thanks for any help. Vicki

NEUHAUS, Heinrich Ernst & Hedwig (TRESTER) > Genoa City

Greetings, I am searching for cemetery records or newspaper information of the burial place of Heinrich (Henry) Ernst (Ernest) Neuhaus and his wife Hedwig (Trester) that lived in and around the Genoa City area from about 1935 through 1951.

Originally, the Neuhaus family was from South Manitowoc County and relocated to East Clark County in 1909. Henry Ernest married Hedwig (Trester) at Peace E. & R. Church, Curtiss, Clark County on 12 Aug 1915.

Their children are Gilbert, Hilda, Raymond, Marion, Elroy, Leonard and Henry Jr. The religious affiliation would have been either E. & R. or Lutheran.

Word of mouth information is that Hedwig died in a car accident, either in Southern Wisconsin (don't know where) or, Northern Illinois (don't know where).

The event (accident) would have been after 1951 because she is still listed as being alive in a 1951 obituary of her father-in-law, Gerhard Neuhaus.

As for the death date, real or approximate of Henry Ernest, no idea.

Any help/direction would be greatly appreciated!

Regards, Bob~~ (South Florida)
The Lipprandt and Trester Family Trees

Where is Mary Alice Francisco's genealogical research?

Two years ago, a wonderful Walworth Co. volunteer named Shirley helped me with this line, which extends from Revolutionary War veteran Levi FRANCISCO and his first wife, Sarah VAN DER COOK. The couple had two sons before Sarah died young. (Levi then married 2. Charity CARPENTER and fathered 10 more children.) Mary Alice Francisco, a Levi and Sarah descendant through the the youngest of these two sons, is reputed to have done an incredible amount of genealogical research over her 90 year lifetime. For some reason, this data has never been assimilated into the vast amount of data currently available on the Francisco family as a whole. It has also been said that Mary Jane did not include her cousins in her research, but I would like to confirm this for myself if at all possible. I am under the impression that the body of Mary Alice's research was deposited with a public library, an historial or genealogical society in Walworth Co. after her death in January of 1955. If I can find her research papers, I would like to have them copied for my own reference. Mary Alice was the only child of Newton Oscar and Marcella (GOVE) Francisco of Delavan, Walworth Co., WI. She was a maiden lady all of her life, thus her immediate line is extinct. Starting two generations back, I have attempted to reassemble this family from census records, but this has proven to be not altogether satisfactory...especially when it comes to identifying and tracing female descendants. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I will gladly reimburse the costs of copying and mailing these materials.

Godfreys in Oak Grove Cemetery, Whitewater

Hello,

I have been researching GODFREYs in Walworth County for several years. Is anyone available to check headstone inscriptions in Oak Grove Cemetery? There's a James Godfrey b. 1820 buried among other Godfreys there; I can't figure out how he fits in with the rest.

Other questions:
On the Oak Grove Cemetery burial list I have, the first column has names, the second column has numbers like 4-29 or 9-13--are these plot locations?
The last column has a series I can't figure out: like C-x or C-Lib-x. Does anyone have any ideas about those codes?

Thank you,
Susi Godfrey

Sears Reunion 1889

From the Janesville Daily Gazette, Thursday, September 26, 1889
---Pioneer and family reunions are becoming quite in vogue the present season. The latest to note was a gathering on the sixth inst., of the four remaining member of the Sears family, who came to this vicinity way back in the forties - it being the first meeting in thirty-one years. The family now consists of Mrs. J.S. Dickens, on the Darien road; Thomas Sears, of Chamberlain, Dakota, and Mrs. J. Stone and Mrs. Frank North, of Syracuse, New York, each of whom will be remembered as among the early settlers of Johnstown. A remarkable feature of the event was, that it was a general surprise all around. Mrs. Dickens was calling on her niece, Mrs. David Dykeman, and had been there but a short time when her two sister arrived from the east, and in less than two hours her brother from Dakota arrived, none of the company expecting to meet each other at that time or place. It is needless to say that the surprise was enjoyed by all. Sept 11th being the 75th birthday of Mrs. Dickens, a large company gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dickens to celebrate the occasion, when she was made the recipient of a fine easy chair. Another pleasant gathering was held at the home of their nephew, H. C. Houston. Thus a week was spent renewing old acquaintances, and will be remembered with pleasure by themselves as well as their many friends.

Mrs. J.S. Dickens - Jane Sears (John)
Mrs. J. Stone - Lois Sears (John Marvin)
Mrs. Frank North - Fanny Sears (husband's name was actually Charles)

Mrs. David Dykeman - Frances Addie Houston
H. C. Houston - Henry
Both were children of Hannah Sears & Robert A Houston.

Frank Dickens is the son of Jane.

The families lived in both Rock and Walworth counties over the course of time. There were two more sisters. Charlotte who is still a complete mystery to me. The last info I have on her is the boat trip over from England in 1833. The family live in Herkimer New York until coming to Wisconsin in the 1840's. The youngest daughter Henriette (Hetty) married Lewis Belts Jan 7, 1857 in Rock County. And that's the last place where I found her.
Hello!
I'm wondering if anyone can help me to find more information about Henry Davis Barnes (or H D Barnes), born in 1842 in Sherburne NY, moved to Elkhorn/Spring Prairie area approx. 1850's. Father, Joseph A. Barnes, Mother, Lovinia Yaw. Married to Mary L.(?) Hay, born about 1847 (NY or WI?). Sisters Adeline and Helen M Barnes. Had children Herbert T. Barnes, b. 1876, Lovinia R. Barnes, b. 1878, and Henry Davis Barnes, Jr, 1886 (who later relocated to San Diego County, CA), perhaps others as well. I know Henry Sr. was in the 28th Regiment of Wisconsin Infantry in the Civil War as a musician. Anything you can add would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Wilhelm Busack (born 1868-69) adopted into the Henning Family but No Records of When...

My GG Grandfather was Wilhelm Busack (I have Lutheran Church Records of him being confirmed in Burlington Wisconsin, Racine County under this name in 1883)but he was adopted by the Henning Family and named Frank Henning. I have no idea when the adoption took place.
I believe I found his original family...on the 1870 Census Records for Spring Prairie, Walworth County, showing Mary Busack born in Prussia about 1802 (without occupation), Eliza Busack born in Prussia about 1835 (without occupation), brother John born in Prussia about 1859 and then Willie, age 2, born around 1868.
There was NO father listed and the age of "Willie" matches up with my GG-Grandfather. How can I prove this was his family or find this adoption record? Whatever happened to the rest of his "Busack" family?
Willie was born on a ship arriving in New York and I cannot find that ship which they came in on either?
There is a disease in that side of my family and I would like to decipher where it is coming from. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Jayne

SKOPONONG Church Record Look-up, Please?

Hello,

My ancestor, Vetle Torjussen (AKA Wetle Torgerson - b. Kviteseid, Telemark, Norway), his wife Karen Kristine Frantsdatter, and their young son Torjus arrived at the Skoponong settlement in La Grange Township, Walworth, in 1843. Karen died sometime around 1848. Church records for Skoponong Church do not exist for that time, however. Then Vetle remarried, supposedly on 23 Jan 1850, to Marthe Halvorsen (Halvorsdatter). I am wondering if somebody has access to the Skoponong church records who could verify this second marriage. I would be very grateful. Thanks!

Sincerely,
Jan

Norwegian Immigrants to Walworth - Lutheran Church Records?

Hello,

My Norwegian ancestors, VETLE TORJUSSEN (TORGERSON in America) and KAREN KRISTINE FRANTSDATTER, immigrated in 1843. They had five children before Karen died, around 1848. By the 1850 U.S. Census, Vetle lived with his second wife, Marthe Halvorsdatter, in LaGrange township, Walworth. His name was spelled "Wattely Thurstin" by the enumerator. LaGrange was home to the Norwegian settlement called Skoponong, as well as Heart Prairie and Round Prairie.

I know that some of Karen's siblings lived at the Skoponong settlement. By 1853, most (including Vetle and Karen and children) moved west to Winneshiek County, Iowa, just south of Decorah.

My question is this: Does anybody know where the Lutheran records are kept for ANY nearby (Walworth/Jefferson counties) Norwegian settlement during the 1843-1850 time period? Lutheran church records for Skoponong only begin in 1850 (before Karen died). Koshkonong records (according to the LDS Family Search site) exist from 1844 onward. But where are these kept? Would the Koshkonong records include the Skoponong records? Whom do I write/e-mail/call?

It makes sense that my ancestors would live around Karen's siblings in LaGrange or Whitewater in Walworth. I don't believe they lived at Koshkonong settlement in Jefferson county...although I can't completely rule it out. So my focus is on LaGrange and Whitewater townships. By the way, I purchased Fred Kraege's "LaGrange Township Cemeteries," and my ancestors' names are not included...I know that their grave markers are likely lost, so they would not be mentioned in the three cemeteries of LaGrange. But I need to know if there are Lutheran church records for the time period I mentioned above. Many thanks to anybody who might be able to steer me in the right direction.

Sincerely,
Jan

I would like to contact the person who submitted the information to possibly exchange information as I have amassed quite a bit on the Quinn family. Anyone presently researching this line or another Quinn line from Walworth County can contact me at - aussiemate1@cox.net Thank you.

The obituary of Libby (Burns) Quinn who died 8/11/1919 in Geary County, Kansas states that she was born in Elkhorn, Wisconsin on August 13, 1854. Her father was English and her mother was Irish. She married Bernard M. Quinn in 1872 - presumably in Walworth County as that was his home. I have searched the 1860&1870 census rpts for her to try to find out the names of her parents and siblings to no avail. If anyone has any information on a Burns family from Elkhorn could you please contact me. Thank you!

My wife's Grandfather Vernie E Martin came to Lake Geneva, Walworth, WI sometime around 1915. He married Ruth Peterson. Vernie was born in Fulton, MO on 25 Dec 1893. We believe that Ruth was born in 1898. His Draft Registration Card states that they lived on Dodge St in Lake Geneva. He worked as a chauffeur for a Mr. E G Potter. Soon thereafter they must have left that area and moved to Chicago where in 1918 their daughter LaVerne was born. We do not have any official records pertaining to Ruth. We do have a letter by a Clara Williams that seems to indicate that Ruth had a brother named Walter. We also belive that her father was born in Denmark and her mother in Sweden. Any information or help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. Pete Z.

Page, Edward D.

Portrait & Biographical Record of Walworth & Jefferson Counties

EDWARD D. PAGE, who carries on general farming and stock-raising on section I, Spring Prairie Township, Walworth County, is a native of the Empire State. He was born on the 20th of March, 1843, in Genesee County, N.Y., and is the eldest in a family of three children. One sister, Ellen Lorain, is the wife of William Trescott, a resident of Monroe County, N.Y.; and Roxena, the other, is deceased. The parents were Jesse W. and Hulda R. (Martindale) Page. The father was born and reared on a farm in Bennington County, Vt., and on leaving his native State went to New York, where he carried on farming until 1845. He then came to the West and spent three years in Milwaukee and in Waukesha, the latter place then being known as Prairieville. The year 1848 witnessed his arrival in Walworth County, at which time he purchased the farm on which our subject now resides. It was then a partially improved tract, and to its further cultivation he devoted his energies until his death, which occurred in 1864, at the age of forty-seven years. He was one of the first settlers of Spring Prairie Township, and took an active interest in everything pertaining to its welfare and upbuilding. In politics, he was a Democrat. The Page family is of Welsh extraction, and the Martindale family is of English lineage. The mother of our subject was a native of Bennington County, Vt., and her grandfather was one of the Green Mountain Boys who valiantly aided in the struggle for independence. He also served as Colonel in the War of 1812. Mrs. Page died when about seventy-one years of age.

In taking up the personal history of our subject we present to our readers the life record of one who is both widely and favorably known in Walworth County, having here made his home since the age of six years. He early became familiar with all the duties of farm life, and as soon as old enough to handle the plow he began work in the fields. After his father’s death, being the only son, he took charge of the farm, and has since made his home thereon. He now owns three hundred and seventy-five acres of valuable land, and the neat and thrifty appearance of the place indicates his careful supervision. There are good buildings upon the farm, and well-kept fences, together with the latest-improved machinery and all modern accessories.

On the 6th of June, 1864, Mr. Page was joined in marriage with Miss Lizzie Fraser, of Walworth County, who died in 1873, leaving two children: Lenora, who died at the age of twenty years; and J. W., who is now attending the University of Madison, Wis. On the 10th of May, 1875, Mr. Page was again married, his second union being with Miss Frank Fraser, a sister of his first wife. Their union has been blessed with one daughter, Lucile, who is now attending school.

Mr. Page takes quite an active part in politics, and by his ballot supports the men and measures of the Democracy. Although he is living in a Republican township, he is now serving his seventh term as Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, a fact which indicates efficient public service, and also tells of his personal popularity and the confidence and trust reposed in him. He is a well-informed man and is recognized as one of the representative and valued citizens of the community. All who know him esteem him highly, and it is with pleasure that we present to our readers this record of his life.

I think they may have married in walworth, he is listed in the 1895 census, but then lived in Rock County, Lima for the next 30 years, but the farm was still in the McMillin name in the 1960s. We think her maiden name was Galloway, but never found anything to confirm. We'd like to find obit or death or marriage information.

Trying to find proof that the James Utter who is listed in the 1850 census of Spring Prairie, Walworth Co. (age 57, with a wife and 5 children) is the father of Sarah Ann Utter who married Abial Quincy Dean Leach (both buried in Zion, IL). Sarah would have been an older sibling and already married by 1850.
