Reed from my researching, but unfortunately he is not the Reed I am searching.

Patsy

Re: Registration of Death Mix Up?

Another possible source for info on this might be their obits in the Blair Press. Many are reproduced in freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/wisobits/naame --- I've got the double "a" in "name" but it probably should be spelled properly! If this doesn't work by itself, put "www" in front of it. Someone transcribed many many old obits from that newspaper, arranged alphabetically. Mine was from the 1920s, so I don't know if you'll find ones that far back. But it is definitely worth a shot. The obit for my ancestor told who performed the funeral, at what church, and in what cemetery he was buried. I've been told by someone who's been there to check it out, that her ancestor, supposedly buried there in 1889, can't be found in the U.N. Lutheran Cemetery in Blair though the cemetery records show he is--same one my ancestor is in, according to his obit. But the reason in that case is that a new road cut across part of the cemetery. Did you check out the possiblity that development may have infringed on part of the Fagermas cemetery?

The minister on the registration of her death certificate may have been serving more than one church at the time, so he may have been based at Frenchville but also served the Fagermas church. He may have filled out the record at Frenchville. Did you try the cemetery there, just in case?

Back in the late 1970s I went to Blair hunting family church records and gravestones. I was a newbie and didn't know what I was looking for. Besides, I had a very common family name--Johnson. I did find a very kind pastor at the church in Trempeleau, who found a set of records that showed my grandmother's baptismal record from 1879. It was in the only book he had. "Someone" had taken it home, and when they died, a descendant found it in the attic and returned it to the church. He told me church records disappear all the time, for one reason or another, and he was very lucky to have this one, which was in excellent condition. Something like that may be why you haven't heard. Also, church staff are overworked, and they may just not have been able to get to your request. Old churches get many genealogical requests. Be patient. You may yet hear from them.

Doris Waggoner
Seattle

I have an Anne Gulbrandson registration of death certificate which states she died in town of Preston Nov. 1892. Burial ground in which interred in Fagernas Norway Lutheran Cemetery, Town of Preston in Trempealeau Co. This was dated at Frenchville by a minister of the gospel on March 15th, 1893.

Turns out Anne is not interred at the Fagernas Cemetery according to the keeper of the burial grounds there. The Zion Lutheran Church was also checked and not there.

Anne's husband Even Gulbrandson died 1875 and supposedely is interred in Pigeon Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery but what I have of him is the Ministerial Record of his death date only. Haven't check exactly where Even is as of yet.

I have written Pigeon Creek Church by email, but no answer yet. I'm not sure who takes care of the area.

Could I please get some advise or help where I should go from here? So is Anne's registration of death telling me she is interred in Frenchville?

Thank You Much,
Rachael (Nelson) Gehringer
Michigan

Thanks for your reply. I did attempt to go through the route of the Random Acts of Kindness, but the person to whom you are referring did not come through for me. I'm glad to hear that you had better luck.

Since the time I first made the request, I have discovered that Lyman Kenyon received a land patent from the Bureau of Land Management for the period of time I was searching. This name had been misspelled by the BLM and listed as Lyman Kingon, so it had slipped past me on earlier searches. As it turns out, this is the land ownership I was seeking.

So, all worked out in the end.

Hello Marilyn,

I would recommend checking the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness website at http://www.raogk.org/faq-requesters.htm (read the guidelines and then there's a link at the bottom to find a volunteer). I've had the volunteer for Trempealeau County do some courthouse and library lookups for me. He's a great help and goes out of his way to find information for you. You do need to reimburse him for mileage, copies, postage, etc. Small price to pay for all that he does.

Regards,
Bob Smith

Alpha index of Lincoln Cemetery in Whitehall, WI

I have recently finished an alpha index of the Lincoln Cemetery in Whitehall, WI. This is an alpha index of what was recorded in 1982 but didn't have an alpha index. So, it's out-of-date by almost 25 years but should be current up to 1982. I have plans to redo the entire cemetery in the next year (2005).
I will be happy to do lookups as needed or provide copies for a small fee.

Dave

It appears that this is the correct Gunder Engen. Since this is an alphabetical listing, husbands and wives are not listed together, but there is a Gunder and a Thorine in the listing, as well as a Lars and Pernille (which do state that they are husband and wife).

To see the whole index, feel free to go to this page where Dave has graciously donated the info to:

http://trempealeau.wigenweb.org/databases/cemeteries/lincoln...

HTH

I don’t know anything about your Olson or Jorgenson/PPhurgenson but I know the frustration of using the Internet to find data! But here is one place to start to looking. Try www.FamilySearch.org It’s a site of the LDS (Mormon) church, and they do a good job. When you click on this site, click on “Family Record Search.” Then scroll down to the map and click on North America. You will get a list of the collections they have. For your use, the 1900 census is a good place to start. First enter Lars Olson, with his birth date and his birthplace of Norway. With his name you will get several hits, and pick the one closest to the right birth year. Then click on the tiny handwritten pages, which will enlarge. If you are lucky, it will be the actual census page recording where he lived in 1900, with a family if he had one by that time. Be sure to record all the data, including the town (you may have to go back to page 1 to find it), and the roll and all the data recorded at the top of the page, including the name of the person who took the census (if you can read it). Then do the same for Jorgenson/Phurgenson. If the 1900 census shows them living in Wisconsin, try it again for 1885 and 1895, and even 1905. You will have to browse those, in the counties the 1900 showed him living in, since they aren’t indexed as the 1900 is. If he’s not in Wisconsin in 1900, hope that there is an off-year census in the state he’s in. Not many states did that. Other Wisconsin resources can be found in http://www.cyndislist.com/wi.htm and more general resources in http://searches.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ I hope this helps, without being too overwhelming.
Are you looking for the name of your father's uncle, or the man who paid his ticket? It's not clear from your query which one was named Olson and which one was named Purgenson. Clarifying your question might help someone answer it for you. Olson is of course a very common name in Trempeleu Co., being a very common Norwegian name. I've never run into Purgenson. Have you looked at the 1885 WI census? If he came in 1882, chances are he was still there in 1885. This census is helpful even though you have to browse through it. There were so few people in the county then that it doesn't take long to check it out. Doris

I am a descendant of John Stephan Pehler (1836-1875) who was born in Rog (Sonnewald), District of Bytow, Slupsk Prov., Poland. He married Victoria Kaldunski (d. 08 Dec 1918) and they farmed near Pine Creek. The name variances for this family are as follows: PELA, PELLA, PELOWSKI, PEHLER. Church records contain the surname PELOWSKI and possibly PELA (Both these variances are Polish in origin.). During German Prussian occupation, like the town locations in Poland, the surnames were Germanized. Thus, the PEHLER. When my family came to America, they decided to shorten the Pelowski to Pela. When they bought land, they worried about the German element in America and put the Pehler surname on land records. But, you will see all four variances on records. This is very common for emigrants coming out of Prussian occupied Poland. One day the banker informed them that they had better stick to one name, or they might lose their land. Because the land was in the Pehler variance, They stayed with Pehler. I know little of the Kaldunski's. Need help on that line. Barb.

I have reason to belive that an uncle to my father came to Trempealeau in 1882. On records found in Norway his tickett to USA was payed for in Eau Claire by someone unknown to me. In records on the FamilySearch homesite I have found one man with name Lars Olson. He was 17 years old, working as a farmhand. The farm owner is registred with name Purgenson. In Familysearch site his census place is: Town 23, Range 7, Hale, Trempealeau. Family History Library Film 1255448. NA film number T9-1448, page nr. 78A.
If someone has any information about this man I would be very pleased to have this information of course. Maybe I have found the rigth man.

Dear Doris Waggoner
I'm sorry that my query was not so clear, and my english is not so good. Here is more information: Lars Olsen (Olson in U.S.A) is the man I'm looking for. He was born i Verdal, Norway, June 15. 1864. He left Norway Mars 18. 1882. And his ticket was payed for in Eau Claire. And I think that was all taken care of before he left Norway. But that is not a big point in this matter. All I want is to try to find Lars Olson. The name Phurgenson is written on a record i found, but I think this is a misspelling. I guess that if it's a Norwegian name it would be Jørgenson or Jorgenson in U.S.A. The reason for this query is that my grandpa once was visiting his brother so we had pictures and names and adresses. But there was a fire in my grandpa's house in 1960 and everything was lost. I was only nine years old then and did not care much for ancestors in U.S.A. And my grandpa was four years younger than Lars so he was and old man at that time. So I have been thinking about this relationship in the last 30 years, and with this opportunity the Internett is given us I think I give it a try. So I will be very pleased for any information. I'm not so good when it comes to look into those records you have in U.S.A, beacuse I have some problems navigating around and find the rigth places.
Best regards from
Trond Olsen

I have recently been searching for another Woychik family -and came across Julia Woychik and her family at the same time. They crossed to the States on the steam ship Bavaria leaving Hamburg on May 1st, 1868 and arriving in New York on May 18th. According to the information about the voyage, her parents were Simon Wojeck, aged 51, a farmer, Christine Wojeck, his wife, Philippine Wojeck, 18 his child, and Ulianna Wojeck, 12, his child. I rather suspect that Philippine is in fact Philip - as that is who is mentioned in the 1870 census from Burnside. They probably came from Poppeleau, Silesia, Prussia - as did the other Woychiks, who were right next to them in the boat, and lived next door to them when they homesteaded in Wisconsin.
I think my great-grandfather was probably father to both men - and he certainly was to the Frank Woychik family, as I was told that Frank was my grandfather's brother. My grandfather emigrated on his own to Independence in 1877 and went to live with the daughter of Frank Woychik - Susanna Woychik Kulig and her husband Hyacinth. I think (but I am not sure) that there was a sister who came over in 1870 - Susanna Woychik Filla - and her son John later settled in ND, as did my grandfather.

Your post was a long time ago, but I would be very interested in knowing any more about what you found out about Julia and her family.

Jean Day

The Galesville Republican, April 17, 1896

Hiram Bartlett
Hiram C. Bartlett died early Sunday morning after a lingering illness of several weeks.

The deceased was one of the pioneer business men of Galesville and probably no man in the community was more generally known that he. He was born in the State of Maine 55 years ago. He came to Galesville at an early date, where he was married to Betsy Moody, who survives him. Three children were born to them, two of whom are living - Bertie, now Mrs. Lockwood, living at Winona, and Edith, a little girl of ten.

In all his years of residence here, H.C. Bartlett was a familiar character. By trade he was a blacksmith and years ago he owned considerable property. He was a friend to everyone; there was no limit to his generosity. He made no distinction of mankind. A man to him was a man, no matter whether the individual carried in his purse a million or a single coin - no matter, whether he was dressed in broadcloth or in rags. He was small in stature, but his heart was large. No one was more courteous than he. He never passed a person by without a pleasant "good morning" or "good evening" as it chanced to be; his hat was doffed to every lady whom he met. He had but one enemy in this world, and that one was himself. He never thought of self. His whole life was spent in helping others; no one ever called on him for help but that he responded. During past years his property gradually passed from his control, but for all that he was the same "Hi" from first to last. He lived his life and no one can say that it was void of good. He had his faults, but all were centered in one thing. Nothing was concealed - the word knew his every indiscretion. There was no dishonest, no deception in his makeup.

The funeral was held Monday from the Presbyterian Church, Rev. J.W. Winder officiating. The Fire Department, of which the deceased was always an active member, had charge of the ceremonies. The casket was carried by the Firemen rom the residence to the church, and every member followed the remains to the grave.

Thank you for the added information. I had heard about the lilac bush but no one I talked with knew exactly what happened to it, except for the fact a road was possibly put over some of the cemetery. If graves were moved to another location or paved over I have no idea.
Will pursue with the church caretaker and see what I can find.
Ellen

Hans Jacob Olson was buried at the First Lutheran Church in Blair, Wisconsin. There is an old cemetery behind the church, but only a few markers remain. The story in Blair is that Olson was never given a marker. Instead, a lilac bush was planted on his grave. That bush was there for years, but disappeared within the last 20-30 years(?). One who would know for sure about the bush's location and time of disappearance would be Eleanor Rick, the church caretaker. She lives in a house adjacent to the cemetery. The church is on Urberg Avenue, just off of Highway 95. The local public access channel made a documentary about the lynching about 10 years back.
