Hello There

I am writing for a friend who does not have a computer. His family lived in St. Croix Wisconsin from about 1888-1928 and I am looking for a general identification just to see if his family shows up or not.
Gustaf A Danielson born in Sweden 1857 died in St Croix 1928
wife Anna C Danielson b 1854 Sweden d 1927 St Croix.
child Godfrey born Feb 3 1883 Sweden died July 11 1905 St Croix.
child Richard
child Charles Arthur ( possibly Karl Axel) born Aug 21 1885 Sweden died in Canada Sept 1972.
possibly a child Adolphe.

I am sorry but the family does not know what part of St Croix, if it was St Croix Falls or the county. They were trappers, so probably lived out in the country.

Gustaf Danielson may have used the surname Peterson.

Nonni

The Genealogy Society for that area has walked the cemeteries in St. Croix County to about 1981-1983. They are starting to update that. I have updated St. Anne's in Somerset, Hillside in Somerset, Oakland in Star Prairie Township and Emmanuel Cemetery AKA German Lutheran Cemetery between Somerset and Houlton on Highway 64. I have only typed in Hillside cemetery so far and I hope to get the rest done shortly. Let me know if I can e-mail you what I have so far. Sheri Cox

I am looking for volunteers to transcribe cemeteries in St. Croix County. U.S. GenWeb has an ongoing transcription project that has been very useful to many, including me. If you're interested, the details are at the following link: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/index.html

Here is the St. Croix County link:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/wisconsin/stcroix.htm

This is a great summer project. I have done several in Ogle County, Illinois and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Please join us to make this project successful. Be sure to contact me if you choose to transcribe a cemetery so we don't duplicate our efforts.

Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.

Thank you.

I am trying to find info on the Parent/Parrent family. My grandfather was Allan Parrent born in Amery, Polk in 1919 and his father was Herman Adolph Parent (Parrent?) maybe from Somerset, St. Croix. The only info we know is that Herman moved his family back to Canada around 1920, added an r to the last name for some reason. If anyone has any info, pictures, land deeds, census material about the family please e-mail me, we would love to find long last family.

GREENFIELD, Margaret RUNNIONS BRADY, 1925 Obituary

This obituary/biography of Margaret Runions Brady Greenfield appeared in the Hudson Star Observer on May 28, 1925 and is found at the UW-River Falls Area Research Center & University Archives in River Falls, Wisconsin.

MRS. MARGARET GREENFIELD
An interesting volume might be written in the life history of Mrs. Margaret Greenfield, who passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Johnston, in this city on May 20.

The earlier years of her eventful career were as full of dangers and thrills, of hardships and privations as her later life was one of peace and plenty.

Margaret Jane Runions was born in Milrusche, Canada in 1845. The same year she came with her parents to the states and located in St. Croix Falls. Theer her mother and father conducted a boarding house and they had not been there long when there was an outbreak of the traditional warfare between the Chippewa and Sioux Indians. The hostilities raged all about them and the chief business of hte whites was to maintain an attitude of neutrality. They were in a constant state of panic fearing an attack from either tribe.

While the Indian warfare was on the whites left their houses open to avoid suspicion and to convince the Indians that they were hiding no warriors within. Mrs. Runions on several occasions sought safety for herself and children in the attic at one time hid her two daughters in a flour barrel.

Many Indians were killed on the Runions place and Mr. Runions helped dig trenches to bury them.

In 1848 teh family moved to Hudson and to thP "Patch" in 1851 and resided there until 1861 when they moved to a farm in Warren.

On Sept. 29, 1859, at the age of fourteen years Margaret Runions married Phillip Brady in Hudson. They moved to Three Lakes in 1861 and five years alter to Erin Prairie where Mr. Brady was engaged in building the first Erin Prairie church, which was burned just as it was nearing completion. Mr. Brady died in 1868 leaving his widow and three children, Mary Ellen (Mrs. William Johnston), Margaret Ann (Mrs. Robert Douglas) and Agnes (Mrs. Grant Boardman). She was a widow at twenty.

Mrs. Brady and her three children moved back to the Three Lakes in 1868, and for three years she operated her farm, the homestead on which her son Lester Greenfield, now lives.

On April 7, 1870 Mrs. Brady married Clark S. Greenfield. To them were born four children: Henry, Lester, Medora, and Howard. Mr. Greenfield preceded her in death some years ago. For some years Mrs. Greenfield carried on the old home place, selling the property in 1913 to her son Lester and moving to Hudson and there building a home, living there a year when her daughter, Medora Hennessy, died, leaving four children.

Mrs. Greenfield erturned to Three Lakes and cared for the Hennessy children for a year. After that she visited with her children, and it was at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Johnston in Hudson that she was stricken with apoplexy on May 11 and there she passed on to her final reward nine days later.

The funeral took place Saturday. There were brief services at the Robert Douglas home at Three Lakes and later at the Roberts church which was packed to capacity with loving friends from far and near. It was one of the largest funerals ever held in that community. Internment was made at the Hudson cemetery. At teh service Rev. Mr. Wilson paid a touching tribute. The pall bearers were James Turner, Scott Tobin, Henry Murphy, James Henry, Albert Fillbach and James McMahon.

Surviving are three daughters and two sons: Mrs. William Johnston of Hudson, Mrs. Robert Douglas of Three Lakes, Mrs. Grant Boardman of Monroe, La, Lester and Howard of Warren, thirteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Many out of town relatives attended the funeral.

Mrs. Greenfield wove her life into the early history of Wisconsin. Her dauntless spirit was equal to every test. It only served as a rich school of development that produced and enriched a notable personality- that marked and broadened her character as that of a great, noble, unselfish, always kindly, always generous, always self-sacrificing, woman, known to everyone- a friend to humanity in every walk of life, whose heart and sympathies embraced the whole wide world.

No community gathering was complete without her presence and she was a promoter in every good movement and activity that stood for public welfare.

Copied with permission. Spelling errors, etc. are as they appeared in the obituary.

Richard Aspel (Rikard Gunerius Olsen Asbøl) emigrated from Norway in 1880 and settled down in Eau Galle, St Croix County, WI as a farmer. According to several censuses he lived there all his life, married to Morie P (written as Mollie, Mali, Malli in various censuses). The last time he appears is in the Eau Galle Census in 1920. In the 1930 US Census for E.G., Mollie is living as a widow with her daughter Ingeborg (56, sigle), most probably on the same farm. Richard is probably buried in the Brookville Cemetery in E.G. A stepson John Aspel is found in the censuses up to 1910, but not later. Original name Johan E, born by Swedish parents in 1883 in Michigan.Lived as a boarder in the house of Bernt Orem in Ishpeming/Ishpenning, Marquette, Michigan. I would be most grateful for any information or references in how to obtain further information about this family.

OBIT 1924 John Dietrich HOFFMAN from Hanover Ger to Hudson

OBITUARY
JOHN DIETRICH HOFFMAN
John Dietrich Hoffman , one of the last of the old time business men of Hudson, passed away at his home on Second streetearly Sunday morning, of old age, which had been gradually undermining his health for more than a year. His passing out was as quiet and peaceful as he had always lived. the funeral took place from St. Patricks church Tuesday morning and interment was made in the Catholic cemetery. Rev. Father cunningham of Hammond officiating.
John Dietrich Hoffman was born in Hanover, Germany August 30, 1846, and landed in the United States the same month that marked the assassination of President Lincoln in 1865. For a number of years he traveled in the south and he launched into business in Mobile, Alabama.
He came to St. Paul in 1872 and two years later he moved to Hudson where he has since resided. He went to work for Luck & Gees as a baker. Their place of business was located about on the site where the Jones book store now stands.
On May 1, 1876, Mr. Hoffman went into business for himself on lower Second street, only to be burned out four years later. He then opened a store at 412 Second street and continued at that stand until he gave up actual work ten years ago.
He married Augusta Reinke in this city Sept. 4, 1875 and to them were born seven children, of whom three and Mrs. Hoffman are living. They are Mrs. Emma Hammill, Mrs. Marie Hellweg and Joseph Hoffman. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. He also has one sister living in Germany.
Coming to Hudson when it was a new town Mr. Hoffman saw it grow to the thriving town that it now is. There was never a move for the public good, for the betterment of civic or religious advancement, for the relieving of personal suffering, which might come that Mr. Hoffman did not contribute somewhat more than his share of labor, time or financial support. Public spirited in the extreme, in his quiet way he took great pride in his home, family, church and community and was ever a faithful husband, father, citizen and friend of all mankind. the passing of Mr.. Hoffman marks the end of one of the oldest of Hudson's business men, there being only one or two more who had engaged in business in the early years of this city.
Mr. Hoffmann (sic) has served as a member of the board of trustees of St. Patricks church, of which he was a most faithful communicant and tireless worker. He was a charter member of the local court of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin and he also served on the city council and the school board.
Those from out of the city who attended the funeral were Mrs. C. Reinke, Otto Reinke and Mrs. A Dommer of Cosmos, Minn., Mrs. David Rombaugh and Miss Irma Bandy of St. Paul.

Thursday 29 May 1924 Hudson Star Times
Information on regulations for Wisconsin marriages 1902

My grandparents, both residents of Minnesota, were married in Hudson, St. Croix County, in February 1902. My cousins and I believe they eloped to Hudson. My grandmother was just under two months short of her 18th birthday at the time, and their certificate of marriage notes an "order of county court permitting marriage". They were married by a county judge, and the witnesses were the judge's wife and someone named Anna Kado, of whom the family has no knowledge, so we assume she might have been a servant in the judge's house, or a neighbor. My questions are:

(1) In 1902 was it possible for a woman to consent to marriage if she was under the age of 18, or did she require parental permission (as she would now)?

(2) Would the court mentioned in the certificate have been either the body to examine any letter of parental consent, to ask her about her age, or to set aside considerations of age since she was so close to being 18? Or might she have claimed to be pregnant and therefore obtained permission? (She wasn't pregnant as far as we know, as her first child wasn't born until 21 months later.)

(3) If it could be any of these, is there a way to find out through court records exactly what the court order stated?

Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

BARNHART, Jacob, Julia & family in Star Prairie

I am looking for information and descendants of Jacob R. BARNHART, his wife Julia (possibly Julianna)and their family. I believe this family to be related to my GGG-Grandmother Mercy DAILEY nee BARNHART. Jacob was born c1813 in NY or Canada (census varies)and the initial R. might be for Redford. Julia was born c 1810 in Canada West. They came into St. Croix Co. from Southwold, Elgin Co., Ontario where Jacob & Julia are found in 1851 census along with sons,
Wm. Oscar born c1833 in United States
P. E. b. c1837 in United States
George b. c1841 in United States
Gordon b. c1843 in US
and daughters
Maria b. c1839 in US
Charlotte b. c1845 in US
Caroline b. c1849 in Canada West.
Later censuses for Jacob & Julia's children cite New York, possibly St. Lawrence Co., for the birthplaces. Mercy's son Guy W. Dailey was born on Barnhart's Island, St. Lawrence Co., NY while many of his siblings were born/christened in Cornwall, Stormont, Ontario.

Jacob's Land Deed in Wisconsin was issued on May 1859.
The 1860 census of Star Prairie cites the family as:
Jacob b. 1813 in New York
Julia b. 1813 in Canada
James b. 1839 in NY
Mariah b. 1841 in NY
George b. 1845 in NY
Gordon b. 1847 in NY
Charlotte b. 1849 in NY
Caroline b. 1851 in Canada
Amos b. 1853 in Canada

St. Croix Co. BARNHART baptismal records cite baptisms, on 28 Nov 1858, for:
Charlotte Mary, b. 6 Jul 1849
Rhoda Caroline, b. 6 Oct 1851
Gordon Alonzo, b. ? Sep 1847
Amos Jacob, b. 1 Sep 1853
Parents: Jacob R and Julia Anna; Sponsors: Parents, Wm H. Burroughs & Mrs. Harriet Bowron.

St. Croix Co. marriage records show
James m. Rena (various spellings) FAY, 5 Dec 1869
Maria Catherine m. Michael CONNER, 14 Nov 1863
Caroline m. Charles McDOUGAL/McDOUGALD 16 Apr 1879.

In 1880 Jacob & Julia are living with Caroline and Charles in Star Prairie. James, a glove maker, & Rena are also in Star Prairie along with children Minnie b. 1872, Gorden b. 1874 and George b. 1878.

Does anyone know of this family and descendants? What might be known of Jacob and Julia in New York and Canada? Where were Jacob and Julia buried? Does Star Prairie have a cemetery and do records/transcription exist? Thank you for any assistance you might have!

Nils or Nels Bergquist born 1860

I am looking for information on Nils or Nels Bergquist born in 1860, husband of Jenne or Jennie children Josephine, Evelyn, Gordon, Randall, Merna and Clarence. This family found in the 1910 and several other census of St Croix County. I am wondering if he could be Nils Henrik Bergqvist born July 23 1860 in Lulea Norbotten Sweden, the son of Jacob Bergqvist and Eva Hansdotter..he came to America in 1879. Nils Henrik Bergqvist had 9 siblings, several came to America. His brother Carl Jacob aka Charles Bergquist was my great grandfather. A sister Emma married Albert Nelson, their son Leo Nelson lived in Hudson Wisconsin. I am also looking for information on brothers Oskar and Axel and sisters Anna Kristina and Augusta. Augusta lived in Chicago and married a man named Olson. I believe Nils Henrik Bergqvist had at least two sons an old letter from my Grandmother Olga mentions visiting them in 1955 she referred to Nils Henrik as "Uncle Hank" One of the cousins she visited was a barber. On this same trip home, she visited her birth place in Dell Rapids South Dakota. Grandma wrote to her relatives in the states and had a few photos but she lost touch with her family over the years...Carl Jacob and his family moved to Canada in 1902 from Potter County South Dakota. Olga Bergquist married Ralph Smith in Alberta in 1910. Your help in finding Grandma's Aunts Uncles and cousins will be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone. I just posted this same query on the Pepin Co. message board. I am looking for a grave that simply has: Pioneers of 1885 on it. If anyone has been passing through cemeteries, looking for ancestors, and you happen upon this grave, please let me know. This grave is my GGGrandparents. They didn't have any dates on it, they just simply put the statement: Pioneers of 1885. They lived in Woodville, their names are John Olson and Jorgine Olson. Anyone seeing this, please, please, let me know. Thanks so much!!

Trying to find out any information on Peter and Nellie Hockerson (Hakanson, Hockinson, etc) who moved to Star Praire in 1892. This information was recorded at the Lutheran Church in Marine-on-St. Croix. Thier children were: Emma Matilda, Josephine Albertina, Carl Elwick, Anna Louisa and Malinda. The children were born in Washington County Minnesota in the 1873-1880 timeframe. Emma eventually married Oscar David Carlson and lived in Marine-on-St. Croix...but I don't know what happened to anyone else (ie death dates of the parents, where they lived, marriage dates of the other children, etc). I couldnt find them in the 1900 nor 1910 Federal Census.
Thanks
Kristin

My Great-Grandfather was ALMON D. GRAY, the first mayor of Hudson, WI., in 1857. He originally came to Hudson in 1852 to practice law in partnership with BENJAMIN ALLEN. He was elected to the State Assembly in 1855, and was county attorney of St. Croix County. He served as Captain of Company H, 16th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the first two years of the Civil War. He married one of Benjamin Allen's daughters. After the war, he continued to practice law in Pepin, WI, Bismark, ND, and retired to St. Paul, MN, in 1897. Allen served as District Attorney in St. Croix County, and while living at Hudson, represented the district in the Wisconsin Senate in 1853-54. I would like to exchange information with other Gray or Allen descendants or descendants of 16th Wisconsin veterans of the Civil War.

From a previous message on this board, it would appear the burials are near that of Benjamin Day (father of Ann). More specific burial information on Ann Day Kelly or the infant that is buried in the same lot would also be appreciated.

Marsha in Pacific Grove, California

Does anyone have info on Alick ERICKSON who is in the 1880 census in Baldwin, age 32? My gggrandmother's death record lists Alick Erickson as her father. It would not be this Alick but perhaps he is her brother. Jane was born in 1843 in Norway, emigrated in 1859 and married in Dunn, Dane, WI in 1864. I do not know her Norwegian name nor do I know if family emigrated with her. In 1870 she had a 15 yr old named Anna Alickson living with them. (Jane's mother was also Anna.) Could be a sister?

Civil War records indicate an Alick Erickson enlisting from Newton, Manitowoc Co at age 18 in 1864 (maybe inflated his age). Could be the same Alick? Can anyone give me info on Alick? Anything would be appreciated.
My grandmother has several pictures from the early 1900's of friends and neighbors in the Woodville area. The following surnames are written on some pictures:

NELSON, BRATHAL (BRATHOL?), WALLESVORD, SALSETH, SPOONER, MOE GREGERSON, JOHNSON, BELDEN, HILLSTAD, SWOVERLAN

We have a picture of the Class of 1938, Woodville High School with graduates names listed. We also have a picture of about 40 women and several men and children that is labeled "Lutheran Church's Ladies Aid" with no date given. Clothing worn suggests the picture was taken in the early 1900's.

Please contact me if these are of interest to you.

Poisson and LaVenture, 1880s?

Does anyone know anything about Josephine and Delphine-Josephine Poisson, who - though from Turtle Lake, WI - both married LaVenture brothers in St. Croix County? Their parents were Eli Poisson and Margarite (Margaret) Becotte (Baycot).

I have Josephine marrying Adelard (Delor) LaVenture in New Richmond in 1880, and Delphine-Josephine marrying his brother Louis-Joseph in Somerset (at St. Anne's) in 1883.

What I'm trying to determine is whether there are in fact two sisters, or if perhaps Adelard passed away and Josephine subsequently married Louis-Joseph. I've found different family trees which credit a son William (born 24 May 1881) to both of these LaVenture-Poisson marriages, and I'm trying to figure out which two are actually his parents.

Torgersons in Eau Galla Township

When Torger immigrated to Wisconsin in 1866, his surname was Jonsen. In the 1880 census his surname was spelled Johnson and he was living in Eau Galla Township, St. Croix County, WI. His sons, Ole, Anton, Richard, and Johan (John) C. took the name Torgerson. Torger was born in 1818, the son of Jon Gunderson Sprekkenhus and Anne Lindvik in Gudbransdalen, Norway. Just before he immigrated to Wisconsin, he was living about 300 miles north of Trondheim, Norway. According to a letter sent to relatives in Norway, he had relatives
living in the Nielsville, and Shelly areas of Minnesota. His sister, Else Johnson, is buried in Sundet Cemetery near Nielsville. Most of these relatives took the name Paulsrud.
We can not know find a location for the Jonsens (Johnsons) or Torgersons after 1880, but they are supposed to have remained in Wisconsin. Does anyone recognize any of these names as part of their family or community at one time?

I am searching for the Charles McGinley family. The 1870 census has them in Pleasant Valley, the the 1860 census is Rush River, both in St Croix County. Does anyone know if these are the same places or are they near? The ages differ so much from one census to the next I am wondering if they are the same family? Any ideas about this?

I have a Sept. 1917 panoramic photo of what appears to be a large assembly of troops ready to leave for WWI.

It is inscribed: Martial-Farewell, 1st. Ill, Infantry and Co. Ill. Engineers, Camp Grant. It has been passed in my family from a Harry Arenson, Deer Park, Wis.

He is among the troops in the tri-fold picture. The back side includes a long message, written in pencil, by Harry. He talks about the cold, lack of cigarettes, question how the oats are growing and mentions other names. I have not deciphered all of the letter yet. Where was Camp Grant? Was it near the Thompson farm, south of Deer Park?

Are you interested in helping me learn more about Harry and his connection with the picture?

The Wannebo and Thompson families farmed in the areas of Deer Park, Amery and Clear Lake. Can you direct me to sites that might provide more information on my family?
Ben Huenink Obituary

Here's an obituary for gg uncle of mine, Ben Huenink.

Ben Huenink was born May 30th 1886 in Oostberg, Wisc., the the eldest of 7 children. He had one sister, Angeline, who died in infancy and has one sister, Della, married to Art Holle of Baldwin. His brothers, John, Joe, Harry, and Ed, all preceded him in death.

The Henry Huenink family moved to farm near Baldwin when Ben was in his teens, where he furthered is education in the joys of honest toil with his hands. (He always said it was the best thing that happened to him.)

Later on he headed west in search of adventure and eventually staked a claim on a homestead near Shelby, Montana, close to the Canadian border where he met and married Laura Emma McBride, the local school teacher on March 4, 1914. He joined the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of latter-Day Saints about 1916. After years of struggling in vain with the elements (from the time he staked his claim) he returned to his home state and after a year in Baldwin, settled on a farm near Emerald. His financial condition improved somewhat, but his greatest area of success in life was in his communication with his many dear friends around the countryside. Horse traders for many miles around came to visit and swap stories. He had always managed to break a fresh pair of broncs from the western boundaries as often as possible. There was rarely a horse that he couldn't handle or train and people had had balky or mishandled horses used to bring them to him to straighten out.

He served for many years in various community endeavors amongh them the County Board in the New Richmond County Hospital and Town Chairmean of the town of Emerald. Eventually he was chosen to manage the first Cooperative Oil Station in Baldwin and several others in surrounding communities. From there he moved on to Black River Falls where he succeeded in the same field.

By then he was beginning to feel nostalgia for his real love, farming. So he returned to the farm in Emerald where he spent most of the remainder of his active life.

He had great strength of character, not only of a physical nature, but in his desire to live righteously.

His wife, laura preceded him in death, July 24, 1972. Three children were born: Velma, Helen, and James; ten grandchildren and great grandchildren. Jim resides in Fla., Velma in Chicago, and Helen in Morton Grove where Ben was living prior to his last trip to Baldwin. There he suffered a fall which damaged the spinal cord at the back of his neck. He suffered a stroke which led to his death July 1, 1973.

His favorite poem was Henry Wadsworth Longfellows "Psalm of Life," which was read at the service.

Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery at Emerald. Casket bearers were George __________, Leon Holle, Earl Huenink, Jeffery Huenink, Leon Rademaker, and Wesley Vrieze.
