Where could I find records of an ancestor's legal name change in Sheb. county? It occurred at least a decade after citizenship/naturalization. Don't know whether that's something in Sheb. Co. Superior Court records? or U-Wis-Milwaukee archives? district court record? or none of those.
With that info, I can arrange a lookup, or contact the appropriate bureaucratic office to order a copy of his name change petition/records.
I want to know the date and any info included in those documents. Thank you, from the East Coast

Experienced Angel, please help me. I searched 3+ months for grandpa’s naturalization records. -born in Poland, emigrated to Chicago age 9, moved permanently to Sheboygan in 1914, legally changed his name after 1920?, was natl’z’d in 1940, died in Sheb.,1987 age 97 ½.
I first contacted UWM-Libr-Archives, Milw; pd $15 research fee. NOT in their index; said contact Fed. Archives & Records Ctr FARC, Chicago, or Sheb.Co. Reg. of Deeds. NOT there; please try US Citizenship & Immig. Office in Milwaukee.
I did obtain copies of grampa’s brother’s Natl’z records from Clerk of the Circuit Court, Cook Co., probably cuz he stayed in Chicago. I asked them to search for gramps, too.

I wrote the old-fashioned way to Nat'l Archives & Records, Great Lakes, Chicago. They mailed a copy of his Nat’lz Index, showing that it was on Apr. 9, 1940, in Cir. Court of Sheb. County, & suggested the records might be held with Sheb. Co. Clerk. I mailed the index copy to the Clerk. Today I rec' a reply from the Sheb. Co. Register of Deeds [already contacted, above], saying they have NO Natl’z records, & included the Nat’lz Request Form for UWM-Libraries, Milw [see above “not there”].
What can I do!? I am dizzy from going in circles. I know he was natl’zd; I now have the date & location on the index card. I am not crazy, but very very frustrated. Thanks
I want to find out if /or how my great-grandfather Louis (Ludwig) Eisold is related to the Eisolds of Sheboygan. My thoughts are that many of the Eisolds may be related in some way since it isn’t an overly common surname and they are clustered in Door, Sheboygan and Marathon Counties.

Below is the information on Louis marriage. In other places Augusta’s surname is spelled Miller.

Kewaunee County Courthouse
Marriage Record Vol A(2) Page 42

Marriage Date --Oct 10, 1878
Ludwig Eisold and Augusta Müller
Farmer, Residence-Ahnapee Birthplace--Germany
Marriage place--Methodist Church--Ahnapee
Michael Eatzminger--Minister of the Goespel of Ahnapee
Witnesses- George Hauke and Anna Müller
Parents of Groom--John Eisold and Johanna Eisold
Parents of Bride-- Jacob Müller and Christina Müller

I also know that Louis’ son William Eisold in Wausau Nov 5, 1918. He left a widow, Martha, and a young daugher Gladys. Martha later married Henry Sessler of Sheboyan and moved to that city. Gladys Married Eugene Myer. in about 1934.

Louis and Augusta’s chikdren were Lydia,William, Francis, Frank, Hilda, Harvey, Walter (my grandfather) and Howard.

Eileen

She was married to Ernst THUEMMLER.

Merlin FIEDLER was the son of Elwood FIEDLER and Irma SCHREIBER. He was married to Elaine WINKEL. The two had five children - Gail (Alfred HOVEY), Diane (William KUMMER), Ellen (LeRoy LEONHARD), Gene (Barbara STEINKE) and Ken (Rachel PEICHL).

I also believe there may have been another sibling...a sister. She may have died in childbirth, very young, etc.

Anyone wishing to share info on this family's descendants can share their loads of ancestors info that I have collected.

Searching for any descendents or collateral relatives of this man. My daughter found a family album containing many pictures, but his (a six month old baby portrait - made in 1893)was the only one identified. The family seems, from census data, to have been in the Fairmont, NE area for at least three generations, through the 1930's. His father's name was Henry, and together they ran a cattle brokerage, it appears. Harlow married Elizabeth M., and their son enlisted in the Army Air Corps in WW II. However, there are at least 8 pictures in the album made by the H. Goodridge studios in Hingham. One is inscribed on the back "To Amy from Grace - Dec. 25, 1897."
For Immediate Release:
Mary Risseeuw, Director of Development
Sheboygan County Historical Research Center
518 Water Street
Sheboygan Falls, WI 53085
920-467-4667
E-mail: mrisseeuw@yahoo.com

The Dutch are Coming to Wisconsin!

Many of the influences of Dutch culture – windmills, wooden shoes, Delftware, costumed Dutch twins, Dutch Masters cigars and even Dutch Boy paints – are alive and well around Wisconsin. But have you ever wondered why? Or if we’ve retained any pieces of “Dutchness” beyond those things. Attending the Dutch-American Experience in Wisconsin: 1840-present may answer some of these questions – and pose new ones. This three day conference to be held in Sheboygan Falls, WI is bringing together an impressive line-up of speakers from Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and the Netherlands. The conference will explore Dutch immigration history, the various settlements throughout Wisconsin, differences and similarities between the Dutch Catholics and Dutch Protestants, the Dutch language as it exists in Wisconsin and Dutch-American authors discussing their work and its influences.
Some of the highlights will include, Dr. Robert Swierenga, the foremost authority on Dutch immigration in the U.S., who will talk about Building the Dutch Reformed Church in Early Wisconsin. Robin Dekker, Executive Director of the Little Chute Windmill, Inc., will discuss the progress of the Little Chute Windmill and Willem Keeris of the Netherlands and Mary Jane Herber, genealogy library at the Brown County, WI Library will provide us with background on the Dutch Catholics in Wisconsin. Guaranteed to entertain and enlighten the audience will be presentations by Dr. James Schaap, Professor of English at Dordt College in Sioux Center, IA who will talk about Growing up Dutch Calvinist in Sheboygan County and the influence on his books. His co-presenter, Richard Dykstra of Cedar Grove, WI will engage you with readings and observations from his book “Jim’s Brother.”
This ground breaking conference brings you the experts in the field and the opportunity to meet a wide variety of people interested in Dutch immigration history, genealogy and Dutch culture in Wisconsin. Bus tours, workshops and a Genealogy Contact Day on Saturday are guaranteed to round out the experience for all attending. There are still tables available at the Genealogy Contact Day and we encourage individual genealogists as well as groups and organizations to consider this opportunity to promote their collections and research. Call or write to SCHRC for more information.
Registration for the two day conference is $80 (including lunch) and the bus tour is $18. A brochure listing all conference activities can be obtained by contacting the Sheboygan County Historical Research Center at 920-467-4667, 518 Water Street, Sheboygan Falls, WI 53085 or at schrc@att.net Registration deadline is September 1, 2008, but please note that space is filling quickly.
I am looking for information on my ancestors, who came to Sheboygan. Franses Podbreger is my great grandmother. She was born 10/16/1886 in Oberburg, Jugoslavia. She married Anthony Machtig and had eight children with him (Mary, Anthony, John, Joseph, Frances, Elizabeth, August and Margret). Her second husband was Frank Jacob Verle. They had five children (Caroline, Anna, Gertrude, Rudolph, and Richard).
John Machtig (my grandpa) was born 12/29/1909 in Marberg, Jugoslavia. He married Leona Krepsky. They had one son (my dad), Jackie Machtig (born 6/4/1943 in Sheboygan WI). John's second wife was Marion Nawrocki. John died in 1982 in Redgranite WI.

Jackie married Betty Sackett on 4/2/1966 in Sheboygan WI. They had 2 children, Todd and Victoria (me).

Does anyone have a birthdate/place for Anthony Machtig? Does anyone know who his parents were and when/where they were born? Does anyone know who Franses Podbreger's parents were and where/when they were born. Does anyone know Leona Krepsky's birthdate/place, who her parents were and where/when they were born?

Thank you for your assistance!!!

Rautmann of Sheboygan, Sheboygan Co.

My research of Helen and Herman came about as the result of establishing a Hamann Family Tree originating in Twp. Centerville, Manitowoc County.

Helen is the daughter of Otto C. Julius and Meletta C. (Rietow) Hamann. She is the only surviving daughter of that marriage. Another sibling died as an infant in 1923.

Any direction or information would be appreciated as an old newspaper mention of the couple indicated four children.

I KNEW My Grosses were in Sheboygan! 1850ish

I have been working with just vague clues of where in Wisconsin to look for my Great Great Grandfather Friedrich Gross and his wife Johanna Keppler and their children. I knew from 1870/1880 census records in Hancock, Michigan that 4 boys had been born in Wisconsin. I knew that the wives of a couple of the boys had come from the Sheboygan area. Then I got an obituary for my Great Grandfathers brother Emil Gross. Wonderful!! It said he was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. I went straight away to every online resource I could find for that county, but alas my family was not to be found. Then tonite, checking the Sheboygan site from Rootsweb again, I got another good piece of evidence. Friedrich L Gross is listed in the Vital Records Birth Index, parents are Friedrich and Johanna Keppler!!

So know that I can say I know for sure they were there, I have more questions? What was it about Sheboygan, Wisconsin that made my German ancestors head there? Why can't I find then on the census? Does anyone else out there have Gross relatives from Sheboygan? Friedrich & Johanna's children that I can clearly identify are Ernest, William, Emil, Friedrich, Louis, Albert and Edmund. There may have been 2 children beforehand, but I cannot verify that.

Let me know if you have any insight!!

Thanks,
Liz

Looking for some information about a John Schoemer (Jr?) of Sheboygan who worked for Kohler Co for over 40 years. He was born abt 1890 and had 6 children, four whom also worked at Kohler at some point. I believe his parents were John Schoemer Sr and Katherine Mootz who came from Luxembourg and settled near Belgium, WI. Does anyone have John Jr's birthdate and the name of his wife?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

There were several Barber families in Plymouth and Greenbush, Wisconsin, from 1850 on. I think they're all connected but don't know how.

My own ancestors were James Wesley Barber (1833-1906) and Elizabeth Ann Boyer (1840-1924). They both appear in the 1850 Sheb. Co. census, and were married in Plymouth in 1858.

James allegedly came from Ohio, and there are rumors of a link to the Diamond Match Co., (Summit Co., OH). I believe his parents' names are John R. Barber and Rebecca (?).

I am looking for any information that will help make the Ohio connection or link the various Barber families in Sheboygan Co.

I've got Wilhelm immigrating here in 1854 and his mother and siblings coming in 1855. But I can't find Jakob's immigration so I assume he died in Germany? Also, I was wondering when Sophie died? It would have to be after the 1880 census where she was living with her son, Henry. Also what is her maiden name? Smith/Schmitt? Thanks!

Pastor August Kleinhans - Howards Grove / Herman

Long story short - I am looking for the church in which Pastor August Kleinhans was the officiant in 1875.

Just the long story - My gr-grandfather (Wilhelm Hinnenthal) was a Lutheran pastor in southern WI in the 1870s. He attended Seminary with Pastor August Kleinhans and I think that they became very good friends - a Frieda Kleinhans is listed as a godmother to my gr-grandfather's first child and the Pastor August Kleinhans that I see in the 1880 census (Outagamie Co) has a wife named Friedericke. I know that Rev. Kleinhans was assigned to a Lutheran church (probably LCMS or WELS) in Sheboygan County; the listing I have from the seminary doesn't give the name, only the town (Herman) and the post office (Howards Grove). Ultimately, I am looking for my great-grandfather's marriage record and I think that Rev. Kleinhans may have been the officiant.

Thus, does anyone know where Pastor Kleinhans might have been the officiant? Or can anyone name the oldest Lutheran churches in the area?

Many thanks for your help!

Lynn

The spelling seems to change through generations, probably by accident. My Shufflebothams came originally from Newcastle, Staffs. I have got back as far as Ralph, born in 1801, and his wife Mary. Their son Thomas moved to the Stockport area of Cheshire in the 1830s and his family are still here. Does anyone think they may be connected and provide more information.

Has anyone found the link between the Dekarske's in Wisconsin and the Dekarske's in Michigan? By the way, part of the Michigan family spells the name DeKarske. My grandfather, Carl William DeKarske, seems to be the beginning of that little quirk, as his brothers and sisters used the lower case version. Carl was born November 18, 1910 in Detroit, Michigan. His parents were Frank Dekarske and Martha Bertha Augusta Wolf. Carl had 13 brothers and sister, all of whom remained in Michigan except one, Richard, who moved to Lyerly, Georgia in the mid-50's and passed on in 1978.

THE DUTCH-AMERICAN EXPERIENCE IN WISCONSIN: 1840-PRESENT
SEPTEMBER 25-27,2008

The Sheboygan County Historical Research Center will be hosting a conference titled, The Dutch-American Experience in Wisconsin: 1840-present, to be held September 25-27, 2008. Experts from the Netherlands and the U.S. will work side-by-side with local historical groups and historians to present a picture of the vibrant Dutch-American culture which thrives in Wisconsin. These experts will include Dr. Robert Swierenga and Dr. Elton Bruins, Research Professors at the Van Raalte Institute, Hope College, Holland, MI; Dr. Hans Krabbendam, Assistant Director of the Roosevelt Study Center, Middleburg, Netherlands; Dr. James Schaap, English Professor, Dordt College, Sioux Center, IA and Yvette Hoitink, Project Manager at the National Archives, The Hague, Netherlands. These researchers will be joined by others who will discuss Dutch immigration history, the various settlements throughout Wisconsin, differences and similarities between the Dutch Catholics and Dutch Protestants, the Dutch language as it exists in Wisconsin and Dutch-American authors discussing their influences and publications. Participants will be able to envision what it was like to live in the Netherlands prior to emigrating. They will understand the fear of a new world and a different language, but also the stories of strength and success as the new immigrants settled in Wisconsin and formed new communities.

Conference sessions will be held at The Bull at Pinehurst Farms in Sheboygan Falls, WI. The third day will consist of a Genealogy Contact Day, where organizations and individuals from around the state will showcase their resources and research. Genealogy workshops ranging from reading Dutch documents to internet resources available worldwide will be offered. There will also be historical bus tours throughout Sheboygan County highlighting points of interest including cemeteries, churches and early settlements.

For further information please contact:

Mary Risseeuw
922 High Street #2
Madison, WI 53715
Phone: 608-284-6231
E-mail: mrisseeuw@yahoo.com

Dank u wel,

Mary Risseeuw, Conference Chair
Member, Board of Director
Sheboygan County Historical Research Center

Searching for information on the Frederick TRAUTSCHOLD family. Frederick (b. 12/31/1836, Bavaria, Germany - d. 6/18/1913, Sheboygan, WI, USA) was married twice. First to Elizabeth "Liseta" ? (b. 1840, Germany - d. 5/1885), then to Augusta DROSTE (b. 1/29/1858 - d. 11/5/1935, Sheyboygan,WI, USA). Frederick fathered seven children who married into the following families: TRESTER, MUHL (in TX), GOTTSCHALK, JOST, MOREHEAD (in TX), SCHROEDER, and FREY. I understand that Frederick was an artist whose family was put up by the Catholic Church when he immigrated in exchange for painting the sanctuary. Have no idea which church that would be for the appropriate time period (abt. mid 1870's). Any assistance is greatly appreciated!!

Daniel Peter Dieleman and Audriana "Jane" Verpoorte arrived in Sheboygan County in 1857 from Axel, Zeeland, Holland. They had two daughters born in OOstburg: Cornelia Anna "Kate" on June 8, 1858 and Diena "Dell" on June 3, 1866. Jane also had a son from a previous marriage, John Christopher Dieleman, who was born Dec. 4, 1853 in Axel, Zeeland. Jane's first husband was Daniel's cousin, Jan Dieleman. I would like to contact any descendants of these children. The entire family moved to Lincoln, Lancaster Co., NE about 1870. I do have the Dieleman genealogy back into Holland. My husband is a descendant of Kate Dieleman Hilblink. The Hilblinks were also from Holland and I have their genealogy.
Henrietta Mueller Rohde (1852-1915)

Plymouth Review
January 1915:

MORTUARY MENTION

After having been in poor health for many months, Mrs. Joseph Rohde, 62 years of age, passed away at the family home in this city on Wednesday, January 20, 1915. Deceased had been a lifelong resident of this vicinity and well known here.

Miss Henrietta Mueller was born December 8, 1852 in the town of Plymouth, where she grew into womanhood. On November 17, 1872, she was united in the holy bonds of wedlock to Joseph Rohde at the home of her parents and four years ago moved to this city where they have since lived. There were nine children born of the union, two of whom are dead. Besides her husband, she is survived by the following children: Martha, Henry, Charles, Edward, Louis, George and August. One brother, Louis Mueller and one sister Mrs. John M. WIttkopp also survive her.

The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at the Lutheran church at 2 o’clock, Rev. Schmidt to officiate. Internment will take place in the Union cemetery.

While her passing will bring great sorrow to the family, death itself was a relief to the stricken one. For the past four years Mrs. Rohde has been blind and bed ridden for six weeks. She had been unable to talk for two weeks and for a week had lain in an unconscious state. Her death brings forth the sympathy of the community to the bereaved husband and the children, who had cared so well for her in her helplessness.
