I would like to correct info in my first message (2006):

The first wife of August Netzel was Emile (1853-1889). August Netzel took a second wife Amealia 1871-1952and died in 1952. Five children (Rheinold,1877-1956,Matilda, 1879-1930, Anna, 1883-1957, Martha, 1884-1957, Ottilie, 1886-1971 mentioned in my first message belonged to Emile. The last child, Albert Netzel, was born to Amealia. As you can see, the names of the 2nd and 1st wives are really just the opposite of those in my 1st message. Sorry about the mixup.

Shawano Leader
10/27/2009
Clintonville veteran joining in Old Glory Honor Flight

By Grace Kirchner, Leader Correspondent
CLINTONVILLE — World War II veteran Harold Laatsch, 94, and guardian Mayor Richard Beggs, Clintonville, will board a chartered Boeing 727 from Sun Country airlines bound for Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, taking part in the Old Glory Honor flight.

Old Glory Honor Flight is the northeast Wisconsin regional hub of the Honor Flight Network. The mission is to fly World War II veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifices. The flights are free of charge to the veterans. “Some of the veterans offer to pay for the flight but we tell them they earned it. We won’t let them pay. They are also given a jacket and some other things,” said Beggs.

The guardians pay their own way. Beggs is vice president of the Honor Flight Hub in Fox Valley.

Early Tuesday morning, approximately 100 World War II veterans will leave the Outagamie County Regional airport and land at Dulles International Airport about 90 minutes later.

“We will have 40 wheel chairs, crutches, canes, oxygen, and two nurses on board as this will be a long day for these veterans,” Beggs said.

The average age of the veterans taking these flights is 88, with many of them in their 90s. The oldest to make the trip so far was 103.

“While in Washington, D.C., the veterans will tour the World War II Memorial, the Iwo Jima Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial, tour the Arlington National Cemetery, and finish with a bus tour of the nation’s capitol. They will also meet with veteran Bob Dole,” Beggs said.

Laatsch has been anticipating this trip for a while.

“I applied for the flight last year but my application went from LaCrosse to Milwaukee and then to Appleton. I am looking forward to the trip, and I’m glad Richard Beggs will be my guardian,” said Laatsch, a dentist during the war.

A return ceremony is planned beginning at 9:00 p.m. the same evening in the airport lobby for family, friends, and the general public.

Old Glory Honor Flight would would like to take three more flights next year.

“It depends upon our ability to raise the money. We have many more veterans that have applied. The entire cost of a flight is $75,000,” Beggs said.

In the future, Honor Flight Network will be expanded to include Korean War and Vietnam War veterans, but the aging World War II veterans and with any veteran from any war whi is facing terminal illness are the highest priority right now.

Old Glory Honor flight is actively seeking corporate partners to participate in this worthy cause. The organization is also inviting individual volunteers and donors to join the mission.

Other Honor Flight hubs are in Milwaukee, Madison and LaCrosse.
