Correne Mavis Soldier
(July 3, 1926 - May 7, 2006)
Correne M. Soldier, “Ho Ze Ji Je i Ga”, age 79, Wittenberg, died on Sunday, May 7, 2006 at her home.
She was born on July 3, 1926 in the town of Elderon, Marathon County, the daughter of the late Nathaniel and Lizzie (BigThunder) Longtail.
On April 11, 1980, Correne was united in marriage to Palmer Soldier in Bowler. He preceded her in death on August 17, 1990.
Correne was employed by the Ho-Chunk Nation for several years.
Survivors include seven children, Roy Garvin Jr., Elderon, Dale Garvin, Superior, Loa Porter, Baraboo, Nina Garvin, Baraboo, Melanie Bryant, St. Paul, MN, Corwyn (Melanie Jo) Roth, Wittenberg and Christian (Leola) Roth, Wittenberg; 25 grandchildren; 27 Great-Grandchildren; two brothers, Phillip Longtail, Bruce, Wisc. and Douglas (Myrtle) Longtail, Osseo, Wisc., two sisters, Lillian Longtail, Elderon and Eleanor (Walter) Johnson, Wittenberg and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Correne was preceded in death by three daughters, Susan, Kim and Darlene, one son Phillip, two sisters, Ophelia and Lorraine and one brother, Alpheus.
Funeral services will be held at 2PM on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at the Correne Soldier Residence, W19255 Elm Rd., Wittenberg. Visitation will be held from 10AM until 4PM on Tuesday when Native American Church Services will be held until the time of commitment services on Wednesday. Interment will be in the BigThunder-Longtail family cemetery. Mr. Kelly LaMere will officiate. Schmidt-Schulta Funeral Home, Wittenberg is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
