OBITUARY EXTRACTION:
NAME & ADDRESS: Leonora L. Gruner, age 104, of 132
Oak Court,
Shawano, passed away on Friday, June 10, 2005, at
Shawano Medical Center.
BIRTH & PARENTS: She was born on March 18, 1901, in
Seymour, the second of seven sisters born to the late Edner and Mary (Tubbs)
Nickel.
EARLY YEARS & MARRIAGE: On June 4, 1927, she was united in marriage to William Barfield
Gruner in
Shawano, he preceded her in death on Dec. 31, 1993. Mrs. Gruner attended the Kaukauna Normal
College.
INTERESTS - EMPLOYMENT: She began her early elementary teaching career in
Seymour and in 1927 at the
Lincoln School in
Shawano. In 1943 after a brief absence, she resumed actively teaching at the Rural Lake View School in the Town of Washington and
Lincoln School and also worked as a substitute teacher. Mrs. Gruner taught First, Fourth and Sixth grade math and writing. She was a charter member of the local N.U. Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, the honorary teachers society. She was also a member of the
Shawano County Retired Educators Association. Mrs. Gruner was a member of the
Shawano Women's Club joining in 1929, and member of the
Wisconsin Lumberman's Assoc. Ladies Auxiliary. When she reached the age of 100 she was named a "
Living Treasure" of
Shawano County. Throughout her life she was an avid reader, gardener, seamstress and enjoyed playing bridge. She has been a member of the
Shawano United Methodist Church since 1927 and member of the
Shawano United Methodist Women.
SURVIVORS: Surviving her are: son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Nancy
Gruner, Mequon and she was a loving and proud grandmother to: Kimberly (Dennis)
Waters, Mequon, Paul (Lisa)
Gruner, Merrimac, WI, and Stephanie
McKee, Cedarburg. Also surviving her are: great grandchildren,
Jenna Rouse, Key Largo, Fla., Jeremy
Waters, Mequon, McKenzie
Gruner, Merrimac and
Lindsey, Kaitlin and Samantha
McKee all of Cedarburg; sister, Mildred (Karl) Sager, Green Valley, Ariz., special niece, Barbara Frank, Brookfield, IL; special great-niece, Nancy Jo
Harring, Green Bay; and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
PRECEDED BY: She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Vida Berry, Marjorie
Nickel, Frances
Schneider, Gladys Chapman and Phoebe Barstow.
FUNERAL SERVICES AND BURIAL: Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 13, at 1 p.m. at the
Shawano United Methodist Church with Pastor Jeff Uhler officiating. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery,
Shawano. Friend may call after noon on Monday at the church until the time of services. Memorial funds for the
Shawano Methodist Building Fund and the
Shawano City County Library have been established in her memory. Schroeder-Mickelson Funeral
Service of
Shawano is in charge of the arrangements. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staffs at
Oak Haven of
Shawano, the
Shawano Medical Center and Dr. JD Hart, and
Pansy Olson for all their care and concern.
