Thursday, Feb, 28, 1907 (LEOPOLIS)

Fred Maas, Sr., an old settler and highly respected citizen of Seneca, died on Saturday evening of cancer. The writers acquaintanceship with Mr. Maas dates back 20 years and the warm friendship that sprung up has continued ever since. Deceased was possessed of a sunny, cheerful disposition, having a kind word for everyone, and it can truthfully be said he had not an enemy in the world. When the writer paid him his last visit, although the dread disease had wasted his frame to a shadow of his former self, he was the same Fred Maas, putting on a bold front, cracking jokes and cheering up those around him. The latch string of his home was always open and a most hearty welcome greeted the visitor, and if in need, as many can attest, he was always ready to extend help, this applies to the early years when many settlers were poor. At our social gatherings he was always most welcome and it might be said a gathering was incomplete without him. His genial personality and wit were always in evidence and contributed materially toward the enjoyment of the occasion. He is survived by the widow and a family of grown children. Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church of Seneca (of which he was one of the founders) on Wednesday afternoon and a large concourse of friends followed the remains to the last resting place.

Note: Fred Maas Sr. was Christian Frederick Maaß, (aka Maas and Maahs) born December 14, 1831 in Kowanz/Korlin, Pommern, Prussia, and died February 23, 1907 in Seneca, Shawano Co. Wisconsin.
