Viola B. Bartelme

Viola B. Bartelme, age 96, of Janesville, died on Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at Mercy Hospital.

She was born in Bowler, on Dec. 18, 1911, the daughter of Emil and Beda (Dedolph) Bartelme. She graduated from Shawano High School, received a Bachelor of Education from Milwaukee State Teachers College in 1933 and a Master of Arts Degree from the University of Michigan in 1945. She had also attended the University of Wisconsin, the University of Wyoming and Carlton College. Viola taught in the Clintonville and Janesville School Districts and for the last 28 years of her teaching career, was a Math teacher at J.A. Craig High School, retiring in 1973. Having been a High School Math teacher for 40 years, Viola was known for her excellence in explaining difficult mathematical concepts. She expected hard work and respect from her students. Many former students kept in touch with her over the years, inviting her to their class reunions and writing her. In addition to giving extra help to her math students, she tutored Blackhawk Tech students after she retired. Viola was widely traveled. She visited every continent except Antarctica, often with her good friends, Arlene Silness, Gwen Daluge and Vera Good. One of her earlier trips involved tent camping in Costa Rica at the age of 70. She was a longtime devoted member of First Lutheran Church, First Lutheran Foundation, Priscilla Circle, Senior Citizen at First Lutheran, Treasures for First Lutheran Senior Citizens, Janesville Area Retired Teachers Assoc., Wisconsin Retired Teachers Assoc., Treasurer for Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Delta Pi, American Assoc. for University Women, Volunteer at Mercy Hospital, Treasurer for American Assoc. for University Women and a long-time appreciated Math tutor.

Viola is survived by: her brother, James (Joyce) Bartelme of East Wenatchee, Wash.; two nephews, John (Eve) Bartelme, James (Carla) Bartelme; two nieces, June (Tim) Thurman of Carlton, Ore., Bonnie Wells of Deerfield, Wis.; her loving friends, Sally Cullen and Gwen Daluge of Janesville; all the students whose lives she touched. She was preceded in death by: her parents; sister, Helen Bartelme; brother and sister in law, Herbert (Leila) Bartelme; special friend, Arlene Silness.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 14, at the First Lutheran Church Chapel with the Rev. James Melvin officiating. Schneider Apfel Schneider & Schneider Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements. Memorials may be made in Viola’s name to First Lutheran Church, American Association of University Women or Cedar Crest Assisted Living (Activities Fund).
