I was wondering if anyone had any information on Wenz Mihlbauer or Elizabeth Kunz from the Lavalle area? Or if they could possibly do a lookup? Wenz was born Sep 25 1834 in Baden Germany and they were married Mar 15 1857 in Wausau but after that they moved to Lavalle where they lived the rest of their lives. I believe Wenz died Apr 6 1913 and Elizabeth died Jun 24 1924. Newspaper articles or courthouse info would be great, anything will help. Thank you, Brittany

Anthony O'HARA Land Patent Awarded 1857 in Sauk Co, WI

Hello!

I am hoping someone has some suggestions for me regarding my next step in research.

I have been searching for years for the whereabouts of my great-grandfather Anthony O'HARA. Although born in Ireland, he emigrated with wife and children to Ontario, Canada, in the late 1840s.

Rumor has it that many folks from Ontario went to Michigan in about 1855, to begin the lumber trade there. Some of these folks continued eastward to Minnesota and Wisconsin. We do not know if Anthony was among them.

I have found a land patent issued in 1857 for an Anthony O'Hara in Sauk Co, WI. Could he be our Anthony? Perhaps.

I have been trying without success to find some corroborating evidence of Anthony or his family in Sauk Co about this time.

Does anyone have any ideas on this? I would be ever so grateful for some sort of lead!

Shannon
Mesa, AZ

PS I am not on the mailing list so please reply to the message boards. :)

"Little Cemetery on the hill" 15 miles north of Dodgeville, Iowa, Wisconsin

Can anyone tell me the likely location of a "little cemetery on the hill, 15 miles north of Dodgeville." It is mentioned in an ancestor's memoirs as the burial site of several of my Franklin ancestors. I suppose it could be in Iowa, Sauk, or Richland County. Can anyone think of an old cemetery in that area where protestants who died in the mid-1800s might be buried?

Thanks,
Tim Hall
Tim Hall 1 at gmail dot com

I am looking for information about the O'Malley (Omalia) Family that lived in Woodland Twp., Sauk Co., WI in 1880. My grandmother, Grace, was the daughter of Alice Elizabeth McKoon, who was living with her stepfather John T. Compton and family. They also lived in Woodland Twp. Alice made an official declaration of birth for my grandmother to get her social secutity no. in about 1940. in it she named Peter O'Malley as Grace's father. In 1880 the Michael Omalia family lived in Woodland Twp. He had a son Peter who was about the same age as Alice. They also had farms in the same section of Woodland Twp. Alice and Peter were never married. Alice later married Leslie McNames whom she later divorced. Then she married William Compton, son of John T., after William's first wife died. Other than the 1880 census and land records, I have unable to find more information on any of the Omalia family. A Peter O'Malley was on the 1920 Woodland Twp. census but I do not know if he is the same person.

I just read in the paper that the cemeteries within the Badger Army Ammunition Plant are supposed to be turned over to the Town of Sumpter as part of the closing, but that the Town does not have the money for the maintenance. Does anyone out there know more about this? My great grandparents, according to cemetery records, are buried in Kerns Corners Cemetery(aka Pioneer Cemetery).

Plain, Sauk County, Wisconsin

I'm looking for more information about how the Village of Plain got its name. I've gathered up all the information I have and posted it to my website here:

http://violetblue20.googlepages.com/plain%2Csaukcounty%2Cwis...

What I'm looking for are official records from 1912 when Plain became incorporated.

In 1915, Plain residents wanted to change the name according to a letter to the editor in 1915. I'm hoping to find more newspaper articles.

So far, I've only seen it rumored, beginning in 1968, that Plain was possibly named for the basilica called Maria Plain (located near Salzburg, Austria). The 1968 story says, "A Catholic priest who stopped there suggested Plain because the land reminded him of Maria Von Plain in Austria. It has also been said that Plain was chosen because the residents were 'just plain people.'" Of course, the 1968 story does not name the priest. I wonder what the source was for that statement.

Late 1800 and early 1900 sources do not mention Maria Plain near Salzburg, Austria.

Please read the info at my website where I've explained this in more detail.

If anyone can shed more light on this subject, please contact me :)

Debbie

Is anyone researching these names? I am of the Barron line. On the probate records for William Barron died 1869, his daughters are listed as Jane Lacy/Long/Lang and Annie Carry/Cary/Cany. I have searched and searched without success. What really baffles me is:

July 18, 1860-NJ Census Jane (15) and Anna (12*) at home

December 6, 1869-Wm., Sr dies

January 3, 1870 – wife lists 8 children, including Jane Lacy (25) and Annie Cany (23*) on probate papers

June 17, 1870- WI Census Jane (25) and Annie (14*) are listed at home with mom, as Barron

*the ages for Annie are very inconsistent

Any ideas?

Susan

My g grandmother was Lucinda Colburn, born in Merrimac Twp., Sauk Co. on 29 March 1855. Her parents were Robert Colburn, b abt 1817 in New York, and Sarah Adler, b abt 1816 in Ohio. Their first four children were born in Canada. They appear in the 1860 and 1870 Merrimac Twp. census. It appears that they arrived in Wisconsin abt 1850, judging by the ages of the last child born in Canada and the first child born in Wisconsin. Robert and Sarah are buried in Baraboo, Wisconsin.

From searching the Merrimac Twp. census records for 1860, 1870 and 1880, I found two other Colburn men, William and Abraham, who were also born in New York, also had children born in Canada, and arrived in Wisconsin abt. 1854-55.

I would be interested in sharing information with anyone descended from these three Colburn men.

Robert had 8 children born between 1842 and 1858: Mary Ann, Amos, Avery, John, Eliza Jane, George W., Lucinda, and Melinda. Lucinda married Richard Terrill, a farmer in Dane Twp., Dane Co., and her brother George married Richard's sister, Bridget Ellen Terrill.

William had seven children that I know of born between 1842 and 1859: Melissa, Amos Samuel, Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Lydia Jane, Alexander, and Alice Mable. He appears only in the 1860 census.

Abraham had eight children born between 1852 and 1869: George, John, Hiram, Marcus, Benjamin, Abraham, Catherine, and Nancy. He appears in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 Merrimac Twp. census.

I am attempting to track down information on his date/place of death and where he is buried. On the 1905 WI census, Louis is listed living at Reedsburg, Sauk, and on the 1910 census his wife Nina K is only listed. My assumption is that Louis died sometime between these dates. I cannot find proof however of his death in SSDI records and currently I am attempting to find WI cemetery records online to find out where he may be buried. My gr-grandmother (his wife) Nina K Leach is buried in Winona, MN with her parents, but Louis is not buried there. He was born in Racine, WI in 1856, had a brother named Henry and his parents were James M Sprague and Mary Milligan.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Marcia

HI Folks,
I'm posting here in the hopes that someone might help me find some info. ( I live in PA)
I believe Cleo Henry b. abt 1905 in Eagle, Richland County ( daughter of Robert Henry and Sarah M. Sparling) married Albert Gudenschwager. They show on the 1930 census with two children Joan A and Everett H. both under 5 years old. I"m not having much luck finding any info on the website however. If anyone can help please reply to cbarber@brockwaytv.com. Thanks!
Carol

Joseph Bacon

I am looking for the date of death and place of death for Joseph Bacon - my ggg-grandfather. He is listed in the Sauk Co WI census in 1860 and 1870. His birth date is listed in records ranging from 1792 - 1799.

During the 1880 census Joseph was living with his daughter - Johanna [Bacon] Burch Perry - in Union Grove twp, Whiteside Co IL. It is very possible that he died there but I can find no record of his death in Whiteside Co IL. Ages and place of birth are incorrect in that census but it is the right people in the right place. It is very possible that Joseph Bacon was living with the Hale family when he died.

Several of his children married and raised their families in Sauk Co WI. Children of Joseph and Rebekah Bacon were: John S. Bacon m Lucy Smith; Nancy Bacon m John Peck; Elizabeth Bacon m Timothy Bigelow; Jane Bacon m Watson O. Beaman; Olive L. Bacon m Addison L. Hale; Lafayette W. Bacon m Jeanette Swena and Martha Bowers. The son of Rebekah was Aaron Noble. Joseph is said to have had 3 daughters before he m Rebekah. I know for sure only of my gg-grandmother - Johanna Margaret Bacon b August 1, 1817 in Sunderland twp, Bennington Co VT. and m Ira Burch in Chautauqua Co NY and Ezekiel Perry in Walworth Co WI.

Joseph Bacon is buried in Tuckertown Cemetery next to his wife Rebeca. An online listing of his tombstone says his middle initial was L. According to family history and his Walworth Co WI homestead papers it was S. Dates at the time of the tombstone reading seemed to be unreadable.

I do appreciate any help I can get in clarifying this man's birth date and death date.
Reta Kleve
While in Binghamton, Broome County, NY a month ago researching a family descended from David and Mary Payne of Windsor in Broome County I came across a letter and family group sheet submitted in 1983 by a woman named Marion J. Thomas. She was researching the family of William Wheeler and Miranda Payne who settled in Sauk County in the mid 1800's. I have reason to believe my Payne family is connected to Miranda and I can add some more information regarding their parents and early history. I have tried to contact Marion Thomas but have not been successful.
Would anyone subscribing to this board be researching ancestors of William and Miranda Wheeler?
I'm looking for the latitude and longitude for the Spring Green Cemetery, located on the north side of Hwy. 60 near Davies Road.

I have the section/town/range info:
SE 1/4 SW 1/4, Section 6, T8N, R4E, Town of Spring Green, Sauk County, Wisconsin.

I've checked on Google Earth and http://maps.google.com but when I zoom in, the area is blurred out on the maps. I would like an exact location.

Thanks,
Debbie

Her name was Charlotte "Lottie" St Clair, she married Charles Hinze and from what I understand they lived in the Ironton Wi area, her parents were Albert St Clair and Nancy Langdon. Albert's Dad was Franklin St Clair and Sarah Casper. We have heard that Franklin and Sarah moved here from Canada and they were French Canadians.
Looking for information on John Riser and his wife Francisca and their family. Both were born in Switzerland and came to America about 1854. John settled in Sauk Co. WI by the 1860 census.

John age 54 and Francisca were living in the Wilson Creek area of Sauk Co. WI on the 1860 census in the household of their son John Jr. age 35 and his wife Magdalena age 32 and their children John age 2 and Magdalena age 11 months.

In 1870 and 1880 John Sr. age 74 and Fransica age 75 are living in their own household in Troy Twp. Sauk Co., Wisconsin. I have not been able to find John Jr. and his family.

Another possible son of John and Fransica was Ulrich Riser and his wife Elizabeth who I found listed on the 1860 census in Franklin Twp., Sauk Co., Wisconsin with the post office of Plain. I have not found them on other censuses.

Does anyone have any information on any of these Rieser/Reiser/Riser in there data?

If there are cemetery books available for Troy Twp. can someone look for John and Fransica Rieser/Reiser/Riser for me?

Was Wilson Creek and Plain close to each other?

I have the siblings of John Sr. and his parents and will share what I have.

Thanks, Connie

Hello, am trying to put my families back together at least on paper. Any information you may have regarding my liat of surnames would be helpful.

I know that there is more to their stories than just a place in a cemetery. For example, who might know about the Lockman hourse show which is still used in today sulkie races? Or the Lockman sewinbg machine...there is more to be found, and I have no other way to come to know my family, on both sides of the tree.
Thank you.

Barbara Anne

Frederick was born around 1820 and Gesina around 1827. Possible children of the couple were Henry/Heinrich born 1850, Wilhelmina/Mina born 1860, Herman born 1862 and William born 1865. I believe that there might have been another related Schwenker family in LaCrosse in the same era.

Dec 1830, NY, wife, Lydia M. (Maria?), b. Sep 1834, NY. This could be my Norton [as he was
called], he and Maria were in Dellona in 1780 w/dau Olive & Lucy. I didn't find them in 1880 either; Ancestry.com is such
a pain to navigate. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Was there a WI census in 1875? If so, would someone with access mind looking for a Benjamin Bates or Benjamin Hoadley? My Benjamin Bates was born in 1860. Sometime after the 1870 census, and before the 1880 census, he was adopted by the Hoadley family. It may have been the Hoadley family living in Baraboo on the 1880 census. There are Hoadleys in Nebraska, too, and since he married in Nebraska in 1885, I might need to look there, but thought I'd start here with the 1875 if it exists.

As always, thanks for any assistance

Susan

Part of the maternal side of my family comes from the Plain/Loreto area. I know that the Grauvogls came here from Germany around 1878, and I'd love to find more information on that immigration and settlement. George Grauvogl married Margaret Conley, nee Shanahan, from Loreto in 1902. I have the names of siblings and parents from both sides, but no idea of why the families immigrated or when the Shanahan/Conley side arrived. Much of the family appears to have settled in the Loganville/Reedsburg area.

I presently live in Muscoda, but am soon moving back to Reedsburg. I will then be able to search the libraries/courts/et cetera myself. In the meantime, any help is appreciated.

Thank you:
Jodi

We are seeking information regarding Patrick Smyth or Smith. His wife's name was Margaret. In 1860 his family lived beside the William and Catharine Rooney family. Catharine is my great-grandmother. Her first husband was named Peter Smyth. We are trying to determine if Patrick was from the same area of Ireland as ours, Aghabog Parish, County Monaghan. Thank you.

Sauk County Cemetery Transcriptions

I am looking for volunteers to transcribe cemeteries in Sauk County. RootsWeb has an ongoing transcription project that has been very useful to many, including me. If you're interested, the details are at the following link: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/index.html

Here is the Sauk County link:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/wisconsin/sauk.htm

This is a great summer project. I have done several in Ogle County, Illinois and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Please join us to make this project successful. Be sure to contact me if you choose to transcribe a cemetery so we don't duplicate our efforts.

Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.

Thank you.

I would be very interested in getting in contact with descendants of Edward and Cornelia (Fuller) Freeman of Sauk Co. They later moved to Buena Vista County, Iowa. I am not related to this family by blood, but I do have some Freeman family photos and info.

Chauncey Kimball, Jr., of Greenfield

Trying to find what becomes of subject after 1860. He is listed with his family (parents are Chauncey and Mary Fargo Kimball), as 14 yrs. old, in Greenfield, Sauk, in 1860 census. Family was in ERie CO., NY, until about 1853/4. He does not appear with the family, in Greenfield, in the 1870 census, Nor do I find him in Greenfield as a head-of-household. [Of course, he may be in the census as a farm laborer for someone else, or some such.]

He is not shown as buried in Walnut Hill Cem. with his parents. [Parents were in town, Baraboo, by 1880 census.]

I am thinking he is perhaps mentioned in a newspaper.

Thanks for any assistance.

Jon v.
