Hi Dubuque ~
I did an online check of database resources for you during lunch hour today. I'm not sure where your reference to the first name "Madison" came from exactly. But all references that I see to the Mr. Copeland -- who was born in Virginia, died in Racine (1870), married to Rachel (Varian) -- give his first name as William. Here's the data on him that I found...
1870 U.S. census -- Racine Ward 2, Racine Co., WI -- June 16, 1870:
COPELAND household:
COPELAND, William -- head, age 77, born VA, occupation: carpenter,
Copeland, Rachel -- wife, age 73, born NY.
----
Wisconsin State Journal (Madison, WI) -- Aug 18, 1870:
The Racine Journal records the death of William Copeland, one of the pioneers of that city, who died on the 16th, after an illness of but a few days. The deceased was born in Virginia January 17, 1793, where, until about 1842, he lived, when he came to Racine, where he has ever since made it his home. He was a man respected by his fellow citizens for his honesty and integrity.
----
LDS research archives has the following entry:
William Copeland
Birth: JAN 1793, Virginia
Death: 16 AUG 1870
Father: Willis Copeland
Mother: Jane Ong-widow of Isaac Ong
Spouse: Rachel Varian
Marriage: 13 OCT 1815
Let me know if that helps.
Best!
Kath C.
