POW/MIA Korean War, Portage Co. SMITH

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Portage County, Wisconsin as his home of record.

Soldier: ALLEN WILLARD SMITH
Born: 1926
Date of loss: Feb. 12, 1951 POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 36 families from Wisconsin that have not been located. There are one family from Portage County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (78 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Cooper siblings Hudson, Milo, Martin & Eleanora in Stevens Point

I have found the family in the 1850 fed. census (Burton, Cattaraugus, NY) and also in 1860 (Amity, Allegany, NY, post office Belmont).
In 1850, children are listed as Hudson (b. abt 1833), Miles (aka Milo, b. abt 1836), Martin (b. abt 1838) and Leonora (aka Eleanora, b. 1842) These four are my ancestors.
Also listed are two Winchell children (Maria & Ivantha) plus an adult male, age 27, named Aaron WOOD.
In that 1850 census, the parents are listed as William E. Winchell and Margaret Winchell. I'm assuming that the mother must have remarried, but I don't know.

In 1860, the last few family members were living in Amity - W.E. Winchell and wife Margaret along with daughters Eleanora and Cordelia. The three sons had moved to Stevens Point, Wisconsin before 1860.
Eleanora married Chauncey Doty in Belmont in 1861 and they also moved to Stevens Point, Wisconsin in abt. 1865. Cordelia Winchell moved to Stevens Point also and lived out her life.
I'm trying to find the maiden name and information on the mother and father of Hudson, Milo, Martin and Eleanora Cooper plus any information on why they lived with Mr. Winchell. I'm guessing that Mr. Cooper (father) died sometime before 1850 and then his wife remarried.
Any information you have would be greatly appreciated!

Searching for the connection between Lombard and Richards families in Wisconsin. The only documentation is a 1910 census from Mesa County, Colorado which lists Frank A. Lombard, b 1888 in Wisconsin as nephew to Hattie R. Pell, (who was first married to ? Ford), b. 1860 in Wisconsin. Hattie's parents were born in England. A WWI draft card for Lombard states that his mother's maiden name was Richards.

Am looking for any info on these 2 families.

My grandfather was Emil JOHNSON. I am not sure of what his Dad's name was, could have been John P, maybe born in 1856 in Norway. His mother was Bertha JOHNSON. She died around Apr 1953 in Amherst Junction. Bertha and John?? had children named Albert, Clarence, Olga, Marie (married a Simon Solie) and Emil.

Emil had a twin brother, name I do not know, but I remember Grandma saying he was killed in his late teens by a tornado.

Emil married Otelia BUDSBERG. Her father's name was Ola Olson BUDSBERG d Apr 7 or Aug 1907. He was murdered (I think in Laporte, IN) by Bella GUNNESS.

Ola married Stina ENGLANDSBERGENS. Their children were Albert, Louis, Otelia, Julia, Oscar, Robert, Mathias. Mathias married Selma GUNDERSON and they got the family homstead. I would appreciate any info/filling in of the blanks.

Jewel JOHNSON MOLTHEN
I would be interested in talking to anyone who may have information to share. Also, about 15 years ago or so there was a lady who was my grandfather's (owen beyer) cousin who was doing research on the parker family. Never got her name, but have her picture if you know any information on her I would love her name. Thanks
I am doing genealogy on the William, Roancy (Davis) Murray lineage. They were my Great Great Grandparents. I am interested in any pictures (wedding or such) of Herbert Cecil, Sylvia (Taylor) Murray. They lived in the Bancroft and St. Point, WI areas. I have pictures of all of the family except Herbert, Sylvia Murray and Orin, Mary (Murray) Quimby (from the Weyauwega, Waupaca Co., WI area).
I have a good collection of text on this lineage as well.
Any help with this would be appreciated or if I may help answer any questions of others, I will try my best to do so.
Thank you for your time.
I am looking for proof of naturalization or immigration records for Abraham PERRON. He came from Canada some time around 1860-70. His wife's first name was Lucy. They settled in Stevens Point, Portage Co, WI.

According to Lucy's obituary she remained in Stevens Point after the death of Abraham. I have found Abraham's gravesite in Ripon, WI and have no idea just why he is buried there.

Lucy died in Rhinelander, WI at the home of her daughter but there is no Death Certificate on record there and she is not listed as being buried in any cemetery in or around Rhinelander so I've been unable to find her gravesite. All their children are dead so am unable to ask them.

Thank you,
Lucy PERRON
A Descendant of Louis and Barbara Gornick married into our family; later a Granddaughter married a Maluchnik and lived in Raleigh North Carolina for a time. I think they may have divorced.

Does anyone have any more information on these individuals? I am hoping there are still some descendants from this family.
Thank you for any suggestions or hints.
Bonnie

The Stevens Point Area Genealogical Society website (SPAGS) is starting a new project. We will be uploading Family Group Sheets, of people with Portage County ties, that individuals submit to us. If you have a genealogy software program that you use that can create a FGS in a Word format or an Excel spreadsheet format, OR would like to create a FGS in an Excel spreadsheet that I can email you, please contact me at jelsinger@charter.net. You would need to supply sources and your contact information (email or snail mail address) for people to get in touch with you.

You can see what I'm referring to here:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wispags/fgs.html

LuAnn
webmaster
SPAGS

21 April 1883

Quite a large party of Stevens Pointers start for Washington Territory the first of next week. The party will consist of James E. Leary, Frank Clark, James Quilter and wife, E. L. Blodgett, John McShane, R. J. Black and J. J. Tracy. Their objective point is Seattle. We hope they find the far off territory all their fancy has painted, and that each and every one of them will prosper. Stevens Point Journal

Would like to hear more about any in the party. James Quilter became a King County Washington deputy sheriff. His spouse Mary (nee Tracy) died in Seattle in 1894. James Quilter died also in Seattle in 1925.
I am looking for information on my grandmother, Bertha (Bernice - pronounced "Bernis") Stachowiak, born in 1894 in Michigan, who married Clarence Ellison in approximately 1920, and died at the age of 36 in 1930. She left Kalamazoo, Michigan a few months before her death to be taken care of by a sister (Rose, I think) in South Bend, IN, where she died.

I know she had another sister who became a nun (Sister Adamine), but I don't know what Sister Adamine's given name was. She also had a sister named Harriet and some other sisters. I am attaching 2 pictures, one of Sister Adamine and a family photo of my grandmother. I think my great-grandparents are Katarzyna (Catherine) Jarecki Stachowiak and John Stachowiak. I have seen the children listed of my great grandparents, but no mention of my grandmother. They disapproved of her marriage to my grandfather because of religious differences (Catholic vs. Protestant), and I am afraid all references to her may have been removed as a result.

If anyone has info, I would love to hear from them. I would especially be interested in hearing from anyone who lives in the St. Joseph area, as I believe my grantmother may be buried in a cemetery there. I have a picture of her headstone. .....Linda Murphy

His wife was Katherine VANDERSLOOT.

My grandmother is the only surviving child and was 6yo when he died. She is aged and in failing health and would like to know more about her father before she passes on. He may have had a brother named Harold. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jon DeYOUNG
Anastasia (Gavin) Borski, aka Ella, obit. April 30, 1927, Stevens Point Daily Journal, Wisconsin

Stevens Point Daily Journal, Stevens Point, WI
Saturday, April 30, 1927
Mrs. Frank Borski, a former resident of this city and county, who moved to DesPlaines, Ill., a suburb of Chicago, two years ago, died at her home in that village Friday afternoon. Her serious illness extended over a period of five weeks, when her only remaining kidney became affected because of a foreign growth therron. A week ago yesterday a baby son was born to her, since which time her condition has been critical and local relatives were informed that there was little or no chance for recovery. The child lived only a day. Ella Gavin, the maiden name of the deceased, was born in this county 30 years ago and was married in Stevens Point in 1907 to Mr. Borski, a contractor and builder. They lived here continuously until removing to the Chicago suburb a couple of years ago. Surviving are the husband and eight children, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gavin of this city, and the following brothers and sisters: Frank Gavin, Rosholt, Mrs. Paul Tuszkowski, John Gavin, Mrs. Johanna Kelly and Mrs. Alex Winecki, city; Paul Gavin, Milwaukee. The body is expected to reach Stevens Point not later than the arrival of Soo train No. 5 at 5:10 o'clock Sunday evening and will be taken to the Winecki home at 400 North Reserve street. Arrangements for the funeral can not be completed before tommorrow.
************************************************

I am researching the Borski surname. The Borski family immigrated from Poland and settled mostly in Wisconsin and Illinois. I am interested in any information in regards to Frank Borski, Ella's husband, and his parents etc. I have other information leading me to believe there is a connection between my Borski family to Frank Borski's parents but have not been able to find a valid source to prove the connection. The Borski family immigrated to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Winnebago County before moving elsewhere. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

If there is a Port Edwards or Wisconsin Rapids (both Wood County) connection there is a strong possibility he is related.
I am working on my family history. My mother was Christine Omernick. Her father was Gregory Omernick. His father was Frank Omernik. His father was Albert Omernick. I have obtained much information, yet am really searching for more. Please share info if you have it, and I will do the same. Albert Joseph Omernik and his wife Victoria (Stroik) Omernik immigrated from the Kashubian Region of Poland (W Prussia) to Renfrew County, Ottawa, Ontario Province, Canada in 1859 or 1860. They lived there for appx 6 years before moving to the Portage County, Wisconsin area. Please let me know if you have or need any other information. Thanks!
