I'm looking for information about Fredrick and Mary Benzinger who are listed in the Polk County US census of 1870. Their Youngest son Lewis is my GGGrandfather. They came to the US from Baden Germany. The oldest children were born in Ohio. The family must have moved to Wisconsin about 1858. I believe that I located Mother Mary in a Fond-du-Lac Alms house in the 1900 census. Lewis is buried in Valley City ND.

Hans Madsen, Jensine Rasmussen & daughter Johanne Rasmine Madsen

Hi!

My aunt needs help finding the brother of her grandfather. She has the following information:

Hans Madsen born 27.01.1847 in Nørre Snede Parish, Denmark. His parents are Mads Johannesen and Mette Marie Hansdatter. He was married to Jensine Rasmussen. My aunt doesn’t know, when he emigrated to America. Jensine and their daughter, Johanne Rasmine Madsen, moved back to Denmark some time before 1912. There is no mentioning of Hans in letters, so perhaps he stayed in America or maybe he was dead. When Johanne dies unmarried, it’s mentioned in the church book that she was born in Lincoln Polk Co. Wis. June the 20th 1886.

I have not been able to find anything on www.wisconsinhistory.org, so I hope that somebody can help us.

We appreciate any kind of information regarding this family.

Thank you in advance.

Best regards
Lone
Albert had probably one relative (Ted or Theodore – brother or son ?) who died in 1898.
Perhaps a Roll of Honor book of the county was made or something was published in the newspapers some time after his death ?
Purpose: writing a book about those forgotten WW1 soldiers in Flanders Field
Patrick Lernout – Belgium
patrick.lernout@telenet.be
I am researching the family of William E. McKenzie; wife Hilda found on the 1930 census for Polk county, Wisconsin. He was at Balsam Lake. I also found on the family search that someone placed William Edward McKenzie born June 26, 1880 Balsam Lake with a father named Roderick McKenzie and the mother was Sarah Young. It states that he died March 10, 1945. His address was found amongst the Mckenzie family up in Idaho and think he was a realative of some type. If anyone has further information or can help in any way I would be most grateful, Richelle Buckles

I am looking for volunteers to transcribe cemeteries in Polk County. U.S. GenWeb has an ongoing transcription project that has been very useful to many, including me. If you're interested, the details are at the following link: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/index.html

Here is the Polk County link:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/wisconsin/polk.htm

This is a great summer project. I have done several in Ogle County, Illinois and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Please join us to make this project successful. Be sure to contact me if you choose to transcribe a cemetery so we don't duplicate our efforts.

Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.

Thank you.

I am looking for information on my grandmother Selma Anderson, I do not know when she was born or where. She married my grandfather Albert Lincoln Prouty and they lived in Wisconsin, they had two children ALfred 1918 and Edwin 1925. Selma died in 1928 that is what we were told, my father at the time was only 3, so he did not remember anything about her.I have called all of the places where I thought she would have been buried in the Wisconsin area where they were living at the time but I havenot found out anyting. I would love ato find out somehow who her parents were and if there is any family that I might track down and find out things about her if I can. It would be great to put information in the family history book about my grandmother. I dont know if she did actually die because I am going by what my grandfather had told everyone or if they just broke up and she moved away and left the children behind. Can anyone find out any information for me I would really love to hear what anyone has to say.
Debbie

Can anyone help me find information about LOUIS HANSON and his wife SOPHIE MORDE HANSON. They had a son CLIFFORD LOUIS HANSON who was born at Amery, WI in 1908. I think I may have found the family in the 1900 census in Lincoln Twp. but I am unsure if it is them because Clifford was not born yet and I have not found them in any subsiquent census. I know the marriage is not listed at the courthouse but could someone check Polk County death records or cemetery records for Louis and Sophie. Thank you for any help.

----- Original Message -----
From: B Jorgenson bjorgenson@charter.net

> Looking for information of the late Iver Jorgensen from Laketown. He
> built a homestead by the Trade River. He died July 4th, 1905. Any
> information on him would be helpful.

When requesting genealogical information, it is very helpful to identify what information that you have. Such as: Date of Birth (DOB); Place of Birth (POB); marital status, family members both children and parents, etc. With that name, are you seeking ancestry? Do you have any ancestry information?
When did he build the homestead? 1902 or 1840? That would help.

There was no record of Iver Jorgensen in census files. I did not find him in any books online via Heritage Quest. However, in the 1900 US Census, there was an Iver Jergensen, born Feb 1841 in Denmark. He immigrated in 1879 or 1872. He had a wife Sor?re, born Nov 1844, daughter Anna, Sep 1873, son Bernhardt June 1885. He was found in Laketown, Polk County. As can be found in the early census, name spellings were often wrong. My own "Bystrom" family were found as "Beestraum". But, is it the same man. Unknown.

I did find Iver Jorgensen, in Polk County, on January 15, 1884, obtained 40 acres of land at the south east quarter of the northwest quarter of section fourteen in township thirty six, north of range eighteen, west of the fourth principle meridian in Wisconsin. If this is the Iver you seek, he would not be in the 1880 census, unless he had previous land granted. He could not be found in the 1890 census due to its destruction by fire.

Ron Bestrom

I'm looking for information on Telesphore L Payette (b. 1850(?) in Quebec) and Anna (Luke) Payette including date of death and burial location for Telesphore as well as the names of any decendents or siblings. I have some information taken from the History of Barron Co., Wisconsin, by H.C. Cooper, Jr & Co., published 1922 indicating children were Elmer, Telesphore Jr, George, Joseph, Clarice (Roy Bailey), Dorothy (Percy Rutherford), Mary Louise (Peter Peloquin) and Mary (Henry Tvedt). That history also indicates Telesphore lived in or near St. Croix Falls and was living at the time of publication in 1922. I am the great grand-daughter of Mary Louise Payette Peloquin. Any information will be much appreciated. Thanks

I found them in 1 US census and 2 WI censuses but no vital stats records. I live in Hawaii so my research is all online. Aloha!

Public Records

A couple of weeks ago, I attended a local forum that was presented by the Washington Coalition for Open Government. WWW.washingtoncog.org . This organization may have similar organizations in your own state. The forum concerned access to government information and public records. Find out and become ACTIVE in their work.

This newspaper reporter attended the forum and wrote his article as to the lessons learned in the forum:
http://www.thenewstribune.com/310/story/39415.html If this link becomes broken in the future, I have saved this article.

READ this article.

As we have watched, many local county recorders across the country have taken records off the Internet. These records are a MUST for genealogy research. They have done this in regard to the "threat" of identity fraud/theft. The definition of Identity Fraud in a number of jurisdictions is taking anothers identity to commit fraud. Identity theft is taking the actual identity of another person for a multitude of false reasons.

Today, a very large number of persons (Mostly the elderly) are afraid, fearful, that their identity will be used by the criminal element for fraud. They are fearful of any of their information being posted on the Internet, as that would lead to identity theft of their names and accounts; and cause them great financial losses. But, they fall victim to someone on the Internet just asking for them to give their information, "Phishing".

Information on the Internet is the cause... This is just NOT, repeat, NOT true. The main problem is not in online records, it is the credit industry giving credit to anyone that has a name of a person. I could get enough information from your garbage or steal your mail to give me MORE personal information on you than is available in public records. If I can't go online to get information, then all I would have to do is just go to a local county recorder and get the same information. So, I steal your mail, get your bank account information...or even those, almost daily, credit card application mailings. I then just apply for credit in your name. Or, I just go to a phone book and get your name and address and print out checks in your name. I can also just print out a false drivers license in your name and address. Any store would honor that.

We don't need to hide records, we need to stop the use of immediate and unauthorized credit being given to criminals. EVERY credit card issuer needs to have restrictions in giving credit cards, just based on an application. Every retail establishment MUST require proven identity of a credit card or check. If you don't want to be asked for ID, then don't complain if your identity has been stolen.

Genealogists, you MUST become active in preventing local county recorders from keeping information off the Internet. I do research nationwide. Even if it was State wide, I can NOT visit every county to see what records they may have on a family. I have found dozens, if not hundreds of family members...supposedly lost over time. We MUST have access to PUBLIC records.

Contact your local county auditors, assessors, newspapers, state representatives. We MUST fight for availability of records ONLINE. Soon, these counties will be shutting off records for those even asking in person. The USA can NOT become an iron curtain for public records.

Tell your State or County government representatives that they can actually SAVE money by putting this information online. They would not have to have their own staff do the research and provide the information being asked by a local person, or by a letter or email request. The SAME information could be provided automatically. The Washington State Auditor, Brian Sonntag has even made the statement that hardening security is better than eliminating access to public records. “I would rather see us respond to a problem than try to prevent one that hasn’t happened yet,” he said.

We all MUST fight for open government records, at EVERY level. There is no "classified" information at the local or State level. I was a Special Agent with the Federal government, with 32 years of service. There ARE records that just anyone can not obtain. These include your IRS tax records. Your records will be safe...until someone at the IRS decides to sell that information. Or your bank personnel decides to sell your information. So, there MUST be a check and balance system to prevent someone just using your information...without someone actually contacting you, or questioning why the credit is being issued to another address.

FIGHT for access to local government records. FIGHT for Internet access of the same records. FIGHT for genealogy research. And fight for restrictions to use of private information without proof of identity.

POST this on your genealogy sites you visit.

Ron Bestrom

Grandmother was born Aug 4 1877 her name was Lena or Theolena. Mother was Hazel J Hagen born Sept 22 1902. Grandfather would be Ole G Hagen born June 7 1870 in Norway. Would appreciate any clues you can give me. I need my grandmother's parents' names. The Foss family lived in Milltown and my grandfather Andrew is buried in Milltown cemetery. His wife was Rachel (no maiden name known) Two sons Allen and Kenneth.

Thankyou, Elaine Williams (Foss)

ASHBAUGH, Clifford & family after 1930?

I am hoping someone might help me follow what happened to my Grandmother's uncle and his family. Clifford ASHBAUGH, b. 1889 in WI, was last known to be in the Amery/Alden area of Polk Co. In the 1930 census of Alden Clifford is a widower with two children. Margaret J, b. 1918 and Donald, b. 1922. Also living with was my grandmother Irma DAILEY, b. 1917 in Montana. Cliff was the s/o William R. and Emma (nee CAMPBELL) ASHBAUGH. The 1930 census HAS Cliff as a farmer but not the owner of the farm. I also found in a newspaper abstract from the Aug 12, 1933 edition of the Amery Free Press that a C.W. Ashbough had attended a farewell party for a Mrs. Robert Cole. The party was hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Asp. Other names at the party included Moe, Swanson, Krasting, Hagan, Wilson, Waalen, etc. Shortly after this census was taken Grandma went to live with her DAILEY relatives and she lost contact with all ASHBAUGHS. I would really like to find out what happened to this line of my grandmother's family. I appreciate any assistance you might offer! Thank you! Dawn

Hello, and thank you for reading this! I am trying to find information about my great-grandparents, who I am ALMOST certain were named Edwin and Anna (Rooth) Peterson. They had at least three children, Rudolph, Roy (grandpa) and Gladys. I don't know quite how long they did stay in Polk County, but great-Uncle Rudy was born in 1898, Grandpa (Roy) was born in 1904, and Gladys was their sister.

I would appreciate any and all help, and thank you in advance!
Jill Robinson

Amery Cemetery

I am at my wits end. I have numerous ancestors who are buried at the "Amery Cemetery" in Amery, Wisconsin (according to obituaries, death certificates, etc.). However, I can not locate ONE detail about the cemetery (where it is, how many buried there, etc.). If anyone can provide me with any info on this cemetery I would be grateful ---I am taking a trip to Wisconsin later this year to visit this cemetery (I live in Houston, TX). Mainly I just wanted to know if it is a large cemetery or if it is small enough that I can acutally walk through it to locate my ancestor's graves. Thanks so much!

-Carla
cac1717@houston.rr.com

Murphy, born c. 1847 in AL
John Murphy, born c. 1848 in AL

So far, however, I have found no trace of Henry E. or John in Alabama or Wisconsin in 1880.

Any leads would be very much appreciated.

Best regards,
PK Murphy in Toronto
