In the long and frustrating search for the identity of Henriette Trempe, daughter of Francois Trempe/Tromp and Marguerite Germain and first wife of Leonard Patnode of Grand Isle Co., Vt., I may finally have some information for you.

Ste-Genevieve-de-Berthier, 30 septembre 1815, bap. M. Henry, mitive, pere canadien, mere sauvagesse (n. aux pays d'en haut) age 6 years, godparents Augustin ... and Honoree Germain; presented by Francois Piet of Maskinonge.

Translation: Parish of Ste-Genevieve-de-Berthier (Berthier-en-Haut). 30 September 1815, baptized Marie-Henri, metis, the father Canadien and the mother an Indian, born in the up-country, age six years. Godfather Augustin [illegible] and godmother Honoree Germain; presented by Francois Piet of Maskinonge.

Piet was a "dit name" for Tremp. Francis Trempe of Maskinonge, son of Joseph Piette dit Trempe and Charlotte Dupuis/Dupuy, is the man we've long suspected of being "Old Man Francis Tromp" of Grand Isle Co., Vt., and Henriette's father.

Honoree Germain dit Belisle, the godmother, later married Joseph Berard dit Lepine and is ancestress of one branch of the Pepin Co. LaPeans (her sister Marguerite married Joseph's brother Antoine; they're the ancestors of the other branch of Pepin Co., WI, LaPeans).

So, those who research Patnodes in more detail than I do, you have a place to look.

James BLACK -- Ireland > Canada > WI

My gr-gr-grandfather James Black came from Ireland in 1861, through Canada, to WI and married Catherine Meehan in Menominee in 1869, she also emigrating from Hemmingford, Quebec, Canada. The little house they first lived in in the Cedar Falls valley still stands, and a farm up on the hill in Arkansaw is still owned by Blacks. We have a pretty good accounting of the offspring of the Black family. I would invite any of my Pepin Co. area relatives to contact me, or any researchers to ask me to look up their family name in my extensive database of WI names that married into my family lines. I seek document references for the facts I have. We might share information.

While I spent time on the Dead Lake Prairie (summers when I was a 11 to 14 year old), I never knew any of the history of the family. Therefore, I would appreciate any information you can give to me. Also, I have been led to believe (unsubstantiated) that the name "LaPean" was changed to that from the french name "Boreau", or something similar to that. Any information you might have in that regard would also be appreciated.

Hello. I was wondering if anyone had any info on a Robert Charles Schmidt, or could possibly be Charles Robert Schmidt. Born abt 1858 in Wisconsin. May have even been Prussia. His father was Ferdinand Schmidt. He had 3 sisters and 2 brothers. One sister, Amelia married a John Peters. I found a Robert Schmidt who married a Neeleu Peters, according to the WI Hist. Soc. in Pepin Co. I have a pic of Robert and a Bride that was taken in Lake City, MN, so I'm assuming this is the couple. If anyone has any info, I would greatly appreciate it. Does anyone do lookups for people that live far away? I would appreciate that as well.

At a thrift sale in Pepin, Pepin county I got a box of religious books, pamphlets. mixed in were more than 40 pictures from many years ago . . . weddings, farm pictures, individuals. All appear to be from the 50's or 60's, none written on. I know how important pics are to genealogy. If there be some family tree person in this BIGNELL line, closer than I am, I'd be glad to see them with someone who could identify and appreciate. The box contents were originally belonging to Mildred and Harold. I only have 3 or 4 Bignells in my tree, so far, and have not 'tied' Harold - tho I am quite sure they are related to me, down the line.

GEORGE ECKLER, a pioneer settler of Pepin, Wis., in 1854, was born in Pennsylvania, March 9, 1800. He came to this place from Jefferson county, Pennsylvania, where he had been engaged in lumbering. He had married Amelia Carrier, a native of Pennsylvania, who was born May 5, 1801, and they already had a family of children, the number of which was finally increased to ten. Mr. Eckler became an extensive land owner at Pepin, where he resided until 1858. He then moved to Dead Lake, Frankfort township, where for many years he was engaged in the hotel business. Later he operated a hotel for a number of years at Durand, but retained his residence at Dead Lake, where his death took place in 1879.

History of Buffalo and Pepin Counties pg 723
This is only part of the article.
Biography: Alonzo SANBORN

ALONZO SANBORN, a pioneer settler in Pepin township, Pepin county, where in very early days he served as township clerk, and who has long since passed away, was born in Montpelier in 1832, son of Jeremiah Sanborn. His mother's name is not now remembered. Neither of his parents ever came west. Alonzo attended school in his native state, where he resided for many years. Then, in 1857, he turned his face to the west, finally arriving in Pepin county, Wisconsin. For a number of years he was engaged in business in Pepin village, in partnership with H. M. Bullard. After that he moved to Dead Lake, where he became an extensive land owner, and was engaged in farming, also furnishing wood to the steamboats, having previously conducted the Dead Lake House for some years. His service as township clerk has already been recorded. He was an enterprising and prominent citizen in his day, well known and popular. He was not, however, destined to enjoy long life, as his death took place on March 24, 1870 at Dead Lake, Frankfort township. Mr. Sanborn was married in December, 1861, to Elizabeth Eckler, who was born near Brookville, Jefferson county, Pennsylvania, daughter of George and Amelia (Carrier) Eckler. Of this union three children were born: Mary, now deceased, who was the wife of Horace Frazer, also now deceased; William, now retired, who resides with his mother; and Hannah, deceased, whose husband, Carl Morsback, is now living in Durand. Mrs. Sanborn moved to Durand in 1908, and has recently disposed of her farm. She is a lady of independent means, is highly esteemed, and has a wide circle of friends and acquaintances in the western part of Pepin county.

History of Buffalo and Pepin Counties pg 723

Note: Horace Fraser and Carl Morsbach are the proper spellings of those last names.

OBIT: Horace FRASER -- Pepin County Courier Dec 20, 1889

Pepin County Courier 12-20-1889. Horace Fraser, of this city, who has been sick with consumption since last spring, died at his father’s residence last Friday evening, in the 27th year of his age. From the first appearance of the disease last spring the best medical skill was employed and he and his friends were sanguine of his recovery. In July he went to the southern part of the State and remained several months, but receiving no material benefit returned home in October, since which time he gradually failed until death came as a relief from his sufferings, which had been exceedingly painful. Horace possessed a warm and generous nature and was ever ready to assist those around him and has a large circle of friends who regret his early death. At the municipal election last April he was elected city clerk which office he held at his death. The funeral services conducted by Rev. Morse, were held at his home on Sunday afternoon and were attended by a large number of his friends who followed the remains with sad hearts to their last resting place in the cemetery. The blow, while not unexpected, is most severe upon his family and relatives who have the sympathy of the community in their sorrow.

Andrew J. Wallace, History of Buffalo and Pepin Counties pg 658

Andrew J. Wallace, president of the Bank of Durand, though otherwise a retired business man, was born in Ontario, Canada, Feb. 19, 1830, son of Charles and Lucy (Hovey) Wallace. The father, a native of Massachusetts, was a contractor and builder who, after various migrations, settled in Durand, Wis., in 1862, where for many years he followed the same business. Andrew J. was the fourth born of his parents’ eight children. He attended common school in Ontario and Massachusetts, and the high school and an academy at St. Johnsbury, Vt., and when 19 years old began working as a farm hand. Later he taught school for one term in Iowa. In 1860 he came to Durand, Wis., which at that time was but a small hamlet. For about a year he was employed here in working for others. At the end of that time, or in June, 1861, he enlisted as a private in Company I, 2nd Minnesota Infantry, and served until the fall of 1863. He was discharged for disability and as mustered out at Louisville, Ky., returning home to Durand in poor health. For a year or two afterwards he was employed as a steamboat agent. Then, in 1867, Mr. Wallace opened a hardware store which he conducted alone until 1879, when he took as partner William C. Hammond, the style of the firm being Wallace & Hammond, which was continued until Mr. Wallace sold out in 1888. On account of poor health he spent the winter of 1888 and 1889 in California. Subsequently elected county clerk of Pepin county, he served in that position for four years. In 1895 he became clerk in the Department of Statistics at Madison and was thus occupied for two years. He then engaged in the insurance business in Durand, and was thus occupied until 1915, writing fire, life and accident policies. In 1884 Mr. Wallace assisted in organizing the Bank of Durand, of which he has been president since 1905. Aside from attending to his duties in this office, he is now living retired, having acquired a fair competence. In politics he is a Republican, and in addition to the political offices already mentioned, he has served as alderman, supervisor, city treasurer and assessor of Durand. Mr. Wallace has been member of the Masonic Order since 1864, and his record therein, as far as he has advanced, has been one of distinction. He received the symbolic degrees in Durand Lodge, No. 149, of which he was worshipful master in 1870, 1881, 1882, 1885 and 1888. In 1880 he received the capitulary degrees in Menominie Chapter, No. 53, of and was dimitted to Durand Chapter No. 61, in 1885. In 1881 he received the order of knighthood in Eau Claire Commandery, No. 8, and in 1889 was grand junior warden of the Grand Lodge of Wisconsin. He was high priest of Durand Chapter in 1891, 1892, 1893, 1894 and 1900. In 1894 he was elected grand scribe of the Grand Chapter of Wisconsin, and was grand king in 1895, deputy guard high priest in 1896, and grand high priest in 1897. In addition to his Masonic affiliations, he belongs to Charles Coleman Post, G.A.R., of which he is past commander and the present quartermaster. Mr. Wallace was married, March 7, 1871, to Sara A. Fraser, who was born in Walworth county, Wisconsin, daughter of John and Jessie (Draver) Fraser. Her parents came to Durand in 1863, her father being a prominent lawyer for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace have no children of their own, but have an adopted daughter, Sarah Fraser, who is the child of Mrs. Wallace’s brother, Horace Fraser.

Harry M. ORLADY --from History of Buffalo and Pepin counties, Wisconsin pg 876

Harrie M. Orlady

Harrie M. Orlady, one of the leading business men of Durand, having important lumber interests both here and elsewhere, was born in Petersburg, PA., June 28, 1857, son of Henry and Martha (Boal) Orlady. The parents were natives of Center county, Pennsylvania, the father being a practicing physician and surgeon, who was graduated from the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia. They came west about 1887, locating in Durand, Pepin county, Wis., whither their son Harrie M. had preceded them, and where Dr. Henry Orlady practiced his profession until his death. His wife died in Pennsylvania some years later. Harrie M. was the third born in a family of five children. In his boyhood he attended the schools of Petersburg, Pa. After coming west he became superintendent of several farms belonging to his father in Buffalo county, Wisconsin. About 1880 he settled in Durand, where he entered into the lumber business, in which he has been engaged for about twenty-three years, conducting a retail business in Durand under the firm name of H. M. Orlady Company, and keeping a large general stock. He has also lumber interests at Little Rock, Ark.; in a yard at Meridian, Wis., and at Mondovi, Wis. Mr. Orlady was also the first president of the Durand Light & Power Company, and of the Home Telephone Company, which he was instrumental in starting. These two companies were later consolidated, at which time he became president of the consolidated company, but subsequently he disposed of his holdings in it. Since 1897 he has been a director in the Bank of Durand. A Republican in politics, he served formerly as a member of the city council, but has never cared much for public office, preferring to devote his whole attention to his business. As a business man and citizen he holds a high place in the community, and is a man ever ready to aid a worthy cause. He is an active Mason, belonging to the Blue Lodge and Chapter at Durand, and to the Commandery at Eau Claire. Mr. Orlady was married, Oct. 20, 1887, to Annabel Fraser, who was born in southern Wisconsin, daughter of John and Jessie (Draver) Fraser. Of this marriage four children have been born: George B., Horace, Nell and Annabel. George B., who was formerly president of the Arkino Lumber Company, in which his father is interested, is now vice-president of the Mondovi State Bank. He married Verne Pearce, of Menominie, Wis. Horace, a graduate of Northwestern Law School, who later engaged in the lumber business at Tulsa, Okla., is now a captain in the U. S. air service, being an instructor of aeronautics at Brooks Field, San Antonio, Tex. Nell is a student at the University of Wisconsin, and Annabel is attending school in Durand.
I've finished up a batch more of the ancestry charts for the French Canadian settlement on Dead Lake Prairie in Waterville Township. These take, in so far as possible, the immigrants from Canada to the US all the way back (on all lines) to the original immigrants to Quebec.

I'm still missing a few connections. If anyone has any data about Trombly/Jarvis (Tremblay/Gervais), Nelson Furnia (Fournier), George Montville, and the Choiniere ancestors of the Sweeney anglicized name, please send me the clues. Sometimes little things help.

I am still trying to find out where John W. Dutcher's father died. His name is supposedley the same as the sons. I know the first 4 children were born in Wapun(Fond Du Lac)Wi and then moved to Pepin, Wi. I found the mother (Anna Mitchel)along with 2 of the sons and they were buried in the Oakwood Cemetary in Pepin. As luck would have it there were no grave markers. I would have thought that the father would also have been there. It's still a mystery to me. Thanks again for all the help. Neil H. Dutcher
I'm looking for information on my ancestors, who moved from West Sand Lake, Rensslaer County, NY to Fond du Lac in the 1840's, them moved to the town of Albany in Pepin in the late 1850's. Cornelius Silvernail (born 1808) & Almira Menter (Silvernail) both should be buried in Pepin. Cicero (Calvin) Silvernail (born 1842) & Angeline Merchant (born 1850), I think 4 of their 5 children were born in Pepin, one should also be buried there (Mary Evoline born 1873, died 1878), the Silvernail's moved to Rusk Co. in the late 1890's. Josiah (Palmer) Merchant & Matilda Crandall both should be buried in Pepin. I am finding many Silvernails and Crandalls in Pepin County on the various 1800's census. Any information would be appreciated.

I just started research on a group of siblings from Lyrestad, Sweden, relatives on my fathers side. While two brothers and a cousin found their home in CT, one brother Anders Fredrik Anderson b. 14 NOV 1969 found his way to WI. He was called Fred, his wife Edit, their children Willmar, Florence and Donald.

All I know about this family is from a letter dated in Sep 1935, telling about the life on the farm. He had weak eyes, his wife was writing this letter to his sister in Sweden.

Can't find the family in the 1920 census, maybe they weren't there then? He emigrated in 1889. Greatful for any lead on this family, and /or suggestions how to proceed.

Jan Ek

Making his home in
Section 32, Lima township, Mr. Ward homesteaded a large tract of land just
across the county line in Canton township, Buffalo county, most of which is
now owned by his son, John P. Ward. He built the first frame house in this
vicinity, and his wife taught the first school, making use of her residence
as a schoolhouse until a building was erected for the purpose. She received
a certain amount for each pupil, but was obliged to take a part of her pay
in corn and other merchandise. In the meanwhile Mr. Ward spent his time in
clearing and developing his land, a task of considerable magnitude, buth in
which in time he made good progress. Thus he spent the rest of his life and
finally passed away. Though he never had any ambition for public office, he
occasionally yielded to desire of his friends and neighbors, and served on
the county board and in other official positions when his services were
needed. Mr. Ward married Esther Plumer, who is also now deceased. They were
the parents of four children, of whom the oldest was Nathaniel P.

I would like to see if there are birth, marriage and death records available for the William Maxwell family I am researching. They are in the 1880 census for Waterville; there are the parents William and Ann, and five children: Wm S., James, Walter, Katie and Finley. I can only find father and his new wife Nellie in 1900. I see in the Marriage Index three William Maxwell marriages ... I presume the two for father and one for son Wm, as it is listed as William Jr. Would these, along with the death of mother be available from the Court House ... Register of Deeds? And what will they cost me?

HISTORY OF BUFFALO AND PEPIN COUNTIES WISCONSIN
COMPILED BY FRANKLYN CURTISS-WEDGE
ILLUSTRATED
WINONA, MINN.
H.C.COOPER, JR., & CO.
1919

P. 504
Frederick Gueldner, one of the early settlers of Albany township, Pepin County, was born in Germany and came to the United States when young man in 1855, locating first in Portage, Wis., where he remained for some five or six years. He then moved to Mondovi, Buffalo County where he worked some time for Harvey Brown and for Joe Harvey’s father. In 1858 he was married in Pepin County to Elvina Guessner, who had come to this country when a child and they settled on 80 acres of wild land in section 31, Albany Township, Pepin County. Besides improving his original tract Mr. Gueldner bought 120 acres more, thus increasing the size of his farm to 200 acres, also building a two story stone house, consisting of an upright 24 by 30 feet with a wing 18 by 20 feet. He also put up two frame barns, and at the time of his death, which took place in Eau Claire in 1911, had 120 acres under the plow. His wife, Elvina, died on the farm many years before in 1879. They had four sons: Fred, who now owns the old homestead but is living retired in Mondovi City; Louis, a prosperous farmer in Albany township, Pepin county; Alvin, who is farming at Grand, Nebr.; and Frank, a prosperous farmer in Mondovi township, Buffalo county. Frederick Gueldner, the father, was a prominent citizen in his locality, for twenty-five years holding public office and being highly respected.
I am looking for a town or cemetery called East Pepin. In 1917 Mary Thomas West Drury (Deury) was going to be buried there, according to an obituary found in the Eau Claire paper. She was married to my gr.gr. grandfather, Isaac Drury, who must have died before Mary. They lived in Pepin county about 1870, they owned land there.

William H Reed b. <1851> married Mary C ? b. <1859>

does this fit into anyones line? I'm looking specifically for mary's last name.

Mary C was born around 1859, according to census records. She was born in wisconsin, both parents were born in Pennsylvania. She married before the census was taken.

William H & Mary C Reed had 4 kids
william, john, guy, & jessie.
I have a picture of the children if that helps.

the younger two (guy & jessie) were born in NY, but the older (william and John) were born in Wisconsin.

John was born about 1881, and William about 1883. When the 1880 census was taken, William and Mary were living in frankfort. So it's very likely that john and william were born there.

any help would be immensely appreciated. willing to share information and favors.

Paul Bauer family in Lima, WI (1880)

I am searching for details about the Paul Bauer family of Lima, Pepin County, Wisconsin (1880). There are two Paul Bauer families in this town, to make things complicated; my great-great grandfather Paul Bauer's wife is Anna and both he and his wife were born in Austria c. 1830s. He had at least two children, Josephine and Borgia (born mid-1800s in Austria). On the 1880 Census, Paul is living next door to Andrew Bauer, born 1857-ish, and his wife Hannah (19 years old). I suspect Andrew is a son, but there are so many Bauers in this town that it's difficult to say. Paul's family arrived some time in the 1870s possible from a town called "Anstra." (I have never heard of the town either... help?)
I have information about his daughter Josephine's family (4 boys, Frank, John, Henry and Charles Meixner) to share.
Adrienne M.
Help! I am looking for information on the genealogy of Joseph C. Thompson, married to Mary J (?). They had children Rosa E. Thompson, Clorinda Thompson, Mary Ann Thompson, Inette E. Thompson, Ada A. Thompson and Elmer J. Thompson, Homer Thompson and Milton Thompson. They were listed as residents of Durand, WI in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. In the 1900 census Joseph and Mary Thompson were living with their son Homer. According to the obituary of Mary Ann Thompson, the married name of Ada was Scott and she lived in Minneapolis. Mary Ann married Stephen Warner and lived in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. I am looking for the parents of Joseph and Mary (what was her maiden name?). According to the censuses the parents of Joseph were both from Pennsylvania. Mary's father was from Rhode Island and her mother from Pennsylvania.

Any help out there would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance,
Cherie

Gerson J. Harris

I recently purchased a large wooden stave barrel with the following information printed on it:
From: Transp Office, Ft. Leonardwood, MO
To: Capt Gerson J. Harris
Pepin, WI
I would like to find out any information about Gerson Harris, his occupation, and the dates of his life. I am guessing that he may have been a riverboat captain, as there were a couple of riverboats with captains with the last name of Harris.
