Death date and location: Bernard and Margaretha Eull

My GGGF, Bernard Eull, immigrated to Cedarburg, Washington County in 1846. He registered land on Sept 2, 1846 with the Milwaukee Land Office. He bought the NE Quarter of the NE Quarter of Section 3, Township 10, north of Range 21. As far as I can tell, that is between Cedarburg and Grafton. The land was registered to the name of Bernard Eull.
He, his wife and two adult children appeared in the 1850 Cedarburg Census under the name of Awl.
I infer from other facts I have regarding the relocation of his sons that Bernard and Margaretha died in Cedarburg, probably on the land he bought. I assume the deaths would have occurred between 1864 and 1867. But I have not been able to get any closer than that regarding the date of death nor the place of burial. I assume he would have been buried at the St. Francis of Xavier Mission in Grafton since that was where they worshipped but so far I have not been able to confirm that.

I would dearly love to see an obituary for either of them if such a thing exists.

Thank you for considering this project.
I am in Durham County, Ontario. Could I be helpful to you?
Best regards,
Bill Eull
Does anyone on this board have access to the St. Marys Catholic Church Cemetery at Port Washington burial Index? I understand that there was one printed some time ago, but I have not been able to find a copy and am hoping that someone in the area might have a copy and can do a look-up for me. Be aware there is also a St. Marys Catholic Cemetery in Belgium, but that is not the same one that I am looking for. All thoughts and help is appreciated.

According to the 1850 and 1860 censuses there were several BLAIR families who moved from Vermont to Wisconsin. One of these families was Andrew M.
Church record extractions for German Protestant Immigrants in SE Wisconsin

There is a new research tool available for those genealogists looking for their Germanic ancestors who immigrated to SE Wisconsin. A new book has been published (the 5th in a series) titled:

"German Immigrants in American Church Records: Vol. 5 Wisconsin Southeast Protestant"

This volume is a compilation of extracted names from church records in SE Wisconsin. It is not an extraction of every church record. It does not include any individuals born in America. It is an extraction of only those immigrants born in Germanic areas.

Of note, it includes an extraction of immigrant individuals in the records from Trinity Lutheran church in Freistadt - who's records are not available to the general public except by contacting the church directly. Also, it lacks any Lutheran churches in the city of Milwaukee (St. Luke's in South Milwaukee is the exception).

The book does not include every Protestant church in SE Wisconsin, the churches included are:

Brookfield: German Evangelical Lutheran Church
Burlington: Cross Lutheran Church
Cedarburg: Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Advent
Colgate: St. Paul's United Evangelical Protestant Church
Durham: Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church
East Troy: St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church
Elkhorn: St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church
Farmington: Fillmore Reformed Church
Fillmore: St. Martin's Evangelical and Reformed Church
Fox Point: St. John's Lutheran Church
Franklin: St. Paul's German Evangelical Lutheran Church
Freistadt: Trinity Lutheran Church
Grafton: St. John's Lutheran Church
Granville: St. Peter's Lutheran Church
Greenfield: St. Johannes Evangelical Lutheran Church
Hales Corners: Emanuel Evangelical Church
Hartford: Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church
Hartford: Zion's Evangelical LUtheran Church
Kirchhayn-Jackson: David Star Evangelical LUtheran Church
Lake Geneva: First Evangelical LUtheran Church
Lannon: St. Johannis Evangelical Lutheran Church
Lisbon Twp.: Zion's Evangelical Lutheran Church
Menomonee Falls: St. Paul's United Church of Christ
Merton: St. John's United Church of Christ
Mequon: Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church
Muskego Twp.: St. Paulus Evangelical Lutheran Church
New Berlin: German Evangelical and Reformed Church
North Prairie: St. John's Lutheran Church
Oak Creek: St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church
Oconomowoc: Zion's Episcopal Church
Paris Twp.: Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church
Pewaukee: Salem Reformed Church
Polk Twp.: St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church
Saukville: St. Peter's Evangelical Church
Slades Corner: St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church
Slinger: St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church
Slinger: St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church
South Milwaukee: St. Luke's Evangelical LUtheran Church
South Milwaukee and Cudahy: Methodist Episcopal Church
Wales: Bethlehem Lutheran Church
Waubeka: St. Paul's Community Church
Waukesha: First German Reformed Church
Waukesha: Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church
Waukesha: Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church
Wauwatosa: St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Church
Wauwatosa: Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church
West Bend: German Methodist Episcopal Church
West Bend: Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church

A description of the organization that put the books together (and where to purchase the book) can be found at: (and by-the-way, I have no connection to the printing company or the organization that compiled these books.)

http://webpub.byu.net/rm222/GermanPage.htm

I am going to see if I can obtain a copy of the book through the inter-libraby loan program at my local pubic library.

For a more detailed description of what the book series includes see the following article on the volume 1 book:

http://webpub.byu.net/rm222/ARTICLEFORHOYT.doc

Tom

In the 1970's or 1980's, a man named Jeremiah [last name possibly CRONIN, MAHONEY or REGAN, not sure], was featured at Irishfest in Milwaukee. He was a seannachie or storyteller, possibly in the children's area. He had white hair and greatly resembled my great-uncle, Con MAHONEY of Beloit, but he was from either Ozaukee County or Sheboygan County.
Can anybody help me identify him, or tell me anything about his family?
Thanks for any suggestions,
Barb Glassel

Nicholas Schreiner marriage, about 1907

Posting for a friend--looking for information on the marriage of Nicholas Schreiner and Rose, possibly Dickmann, which would have occurred around 1907 or so. Nicholas was part of the Grafton Schreiner family, and their daughter's obit from 1999 lists the mother as Rose Dickmann, but I'm interested in finding out her parents' names. (Or if she really was even a Dickmann.) There was a Rosa Dickmann born in the area in 1893 to Michael Dickmanna and Anna Roden, but she would be too young to have married in 1907, and according to the 1920 and 1930 census records, this Rose would have been born around 1888. Thanks for any info!

On lst census 1850 in Milw he was listed as Berling, later bought property in Ozaukee as Birling. Believe this last name stuck as found 2 daughters married as a Birling.

Can find absolutely nothing of Sebastien or family.
Possible connections

There are two possible relative listed in the Wis. 1855 State Census Index that I am thinking could be my great great grandparent. One is Frederick Knaple in Granville, Milwaukee County pg. 10 and Frederick Kniple Port Washington Village, Ozaukee County pg.. 6.

My great grandmother whose name was Fredericka Dorotea Knipple or Kneple (not sure of spelling) but it was pronounced Knep - lee with a possible Von prefix was born May 15 1835 in Furthstadt, Sachsen, Germany. She came to this country with her parents at ten years of age. They came in a sailing ship that took thirteen weeks to arrive in Canada. They did not stay there but came directly to Mequon, Wis. possibly late in 1845 or early in 1846. We know that she had at least two sisters with names Wilhelmina and possibly Lena. We do not know the full names of her parents. .There is also some connection to the Erdman family (cousins). Any info out there?

Looking for information on a Jean or John Weyker or Wiker who was born about 1828-29 in Germany Belgium.I have found a John Wiker in the 1850 census in Washington Co,Belgium Wisconsin that would match the right birth years withthe head of house Henry Wiker. In 1860 he is listed as Jean Weyker married to Katharina and two daughters Barbara & Helena.Katharina's maiden name should be Oswald and they are living in Ozaukee Co,Belgium,Wisconsin. In 1870 this family has moved to Houghton county Michigan and 1880 they are still in Houghton County.John died in 1881 and his wife remarried.
My problem comes from in 1986 someone did a family book and they say John came over to America in 1845 on the ship Silvanus Jenkins.I do find a Weyker family on the ship however the Jean's are listed as 40,8 &3 years of age.Since the only Jean-John I can find matching the right age for mine living with a Henry-Heinrich is it totally possible that someone has him in the wrong family?
They say in the book he founded the town of Belgium Wisconsin, started the first school there and planned another in 1848.From my research at the library I find this attributed to the Jean-John-Johannes that came on the ship Silvanus Jenkins.
Is there someone out there that can help me with this?

Madonna

?? Grafton Cedarburg area man named Daum or related to Daum formed Company in Civil War??

I am trying to track down a Mr. Daum or someone related to the Daums from the Grafton-Cedarburg area who was a volunteer in the Civil War. Supposedly he formed a company which he led as Captain. I have looked at the Wisc. Hist. Soc. Civil War Rosters and there is no Daum listed who fits that description. I had hoped to order a copy of the pension records before the price presumably triples on April 28, 2007. All I can think is that the man was related through the Daums but has a different last name. A family member has the Captain's gun but there is no company listed on the gun. I don't have any other information about the gun.

The only male Daum of the right age I find is
DAUM PHILIPP 35 b. HESSIA WI OZAUKEE MEQUON 1860
DAUM PHILLIP 45 b. HESS WI OZAUKEE MEQUON 1870
DAUM PHILIP 59 W GERM WI OZAUKEE MEQUON 1880
DAUM PHIL 80 b. GERM WI OZAUKEE MEQUON 1900
living with Andrew Hilger a tin smith and wife Kate

I am not a relative but rather a friend hoping to surprise the descendants with the complete pension file. The real surprise has been that I couldn't find the Captain!

Obviously I would appreciate any information on a story of a Civil War Company being formed by a Grafton-Cedarburg area resident
Thanks,
Mary
Peter Frank, Mequon, Homestead High School: Help Please?

Would someone please help provide missing information on these children of Peter Frank 1812-1888; wife Anna Pauls Frank 1811-1862? They homesteaded in Mequon in 1840 and I have birth dates/years but can find nothing more about them using census data and vital records in Wisconsin for the 1800's.

Mathias Frank b. 22 May 1836 in Losheim Germany d. ??
Elena Frank b. 1842 in Mequon d. ??
Catherine Frank b. 1845 in Mequon d. ??
Anna Frank b. 1851 in Mequon d. ??
Henry Cornelius/Cornelius Henry b. 1853/1855 in Mequon d.??

Peter Frank purchased the land for St. James Catholic Church in Mequon and sold it to the Milwaukee Archdiocese for $1.00; first Mass in a log church 1845; cemetery created 1849. I expect that if my great-great aunts and uncles died near Mequon, they would be buried at St. James Cemetery. Would someone please check the cemetery or church records (if still at the church)? I would love to have photos of grave stones if found.

My great-great grandparents, Peter and Anna Frank are buried in the front yard of the Homestead High School. I have two photos of their obelisk grave markers enclosed by a chain link fence (ugly). Can someone tell me whether there is any writing on the markers? The photos aren't dated and are taken from a distance. Is the grave site still there? Still unattractive? Perhaps moved or improved when the school was enlarged?

I'm attempting to complete the family history for two generations of Frank's before I come to Wisconsin for a reunion and wedding. Your generosity in helping to do this would be much appreciated. I feel a part of Mequon (through my ancestor's support of the church and city) even though I've not yet visited.

Regards, Karen (from Maryland)

[Ozaukee County]
Searching for info on the family of Michael & Catherine Neuhengen Meyeres of Port Washington

Searching for information on the family of Joannes Michael Meyeres (b. 8 Feb. 1832 in Boevange sur Attert, Mersch, Luxembourg) and Catherine Neuhengen (b. 1 April 1832 in Boevange sur Attert, Mersch, Luxembourg) who were married in Boevange but immigrated to the US bef. 1859. From the 1860 and 1870 census records I have found the following children: Catherine (b. abt. 1858); Susanna (b. 15 Oct. 1859 in Port Washington); Mary (b. abt. 1862); Barbara (b. abt. 1864); Anna (b. abt. 1866); and Helene (b. abt. 1869). I have found Catherine in the 1900 census living with her 2nd husband, William Kleyer. That states that she was the mother of 7 children, all living. Susanna (b. 1859) married Mathias Prom (son of Heinrich Prom and Susanna Neuhengen) and moved to Harvey, Wells Co., ND. According to notes left behind by their daughter, Christine, when they visited in 1899, Catherine Neuhengen Meyeres Kleyer was living with her daughter MaryAnn and was next door to the family of Nicholas Henry Prom which corresponds to the 1900 census entries only MaryAnn is not living with her mother. Does anyone know what happened to the other 6 children? When Michael died? When Catherine died? Thanks for any help.

What I do have is a cookbook that is handwritten by my Great Grandmother, Mrs. Emil Johl, (her husband owned the butcher shop in Saukville). It is signed in her hand and dated Jan 12, 1919. There are recipes in her that are credited to others and I thought that maybe the families may be interested in these. A Stollen from "Mrs. Meyer", dill pickles from "Hilda Haselbarth", Celery and Cherry Pickles from "Mary Jo", Pickles and Sour Cream Cake from "Katie Schomisch", Pickles and Dill Pickles from "Mrs. A O Horn", Sliced Cucumbers from "Mrs Munes"..(not sure of this name),
Honey Cookies "Mrs Doppeil" , Sweet sour pickles, Mrs. John Oberst, Heinz Green Pickles/Annie Ullrich I have another cookbook that is also handwritten that I believe is a little later in date and will post also.

Cedarburg News - Wed 4 May 1938

Fred GRAF, Architect, Dies

Builder of Ozaukee County Courthouse Dies at Age of 78

Fred Graf, 78, well-known Milwaukee architect, died at his home in that city on Wednesday after a brief illness.

Mr. Graf was born in Germantown on May 13, 1859. He was 8 years of age when his parents purchased a farm at Waubeka and moved there.

He left Waubeka at the age of 21 to accept a position with the Hilgen Mfg. Co. at Cedarburg. His employment there and contact with blue prints and various building plans started his career and decision to become an architect.

He worked here for two years and then went to Milwaukee where he was emloyed by building conttractors, and in 1892 engaged in business for himself.

The first building that he designed was the Wiesler Hotel on So. Washington avenue. He planned this in 1885, and he always referred to it as his “firstling”.

Among other public buildings he designed were the public school at Waubeka, the office building of the Germantown Mutual Fire Insurance Co., and the Ozaukee County Court House.

He specialized in homes more than in public buildings, and designed many fine homes in Milwaukee and throughout this county. His motto was anything that was worth doing, be it ever so small, was worth doing well, and this was reflected in the type of homes he built. He was a man of character and ideals, and always had a warm spot in his heart for old places and friends in Ozaukee county.

In 1886 he was married to Cora RETTBERG, grand-daughter of the late Frederick W. HORN of Cedarburg who survives. He also leaves two daughters, Mrs. H. SCHUENEMAN of Thiensville and Miss Cora Graf of Milwaukee, and two sons Fredrick and Herbert of Milwaukee.

Funeral services took place Saturday from the FROEMMING & BOECHER funeral home in Milwaukee with interment in Zur Ruhe cemetery.
