I am seeking information on John and Frank Gengler [brothers] who immigrated from Luxembourg arriving in Port Washington in 1846 on the ship Talleyrand. They resided in Belgium from 1846 to ?? They are not listed in the 1855 Census of Belgium. Does anyone know where they migrated to and if the were related to Adam and Catherine [Kaber] Gengler who also arrived in 1846.

John Gengler was my great great grandfather. I think his middle name was Francis and his father's name was Franz. Franz died in Port Washington in 1853. John had a daughter, Margaret, my great grandmother.

My records show that Franz died 11/5/1853. My great grandmother is Margaret Gengler who lived from 1845 to 1942 in Port Washington.

Richard Duprel has an extensive file on a John Gengler who was born about 1848 in Port Washington but I have not been able to contact him as yet.

Jim, John and Franz GENGLER arrived in Port Washington in 1846 on the brig Talleyrand. My grandfather, Adam, arrived in Aug of 1846 along with his wife, Catherine and eight children. Records show he and John bought their land on the same day. Adam was born in Everlange or Victen. Is there a chance that they were brothers or cousins? Cindy

Jean Gengler sold the land to Peter Canoes/Knaus on June 23rd, so it looks like both deals were recorded at the same time, i.e., June 24, 1847. I have the 1873 plat map and I don't see Genglers, and you didn't find them on the 1855 census. Did they just own the land as patentee land owners and then get out quick at a profit? Did they maybe live in Port Washington? Go to Minnesota, Iowa or SD like so many other Luxies?

I just found Jean Gengler also owning land in Section 17 T12, R22E--same area, another 80 acres--that would be going west, out of the village of Belgium on Hwy D. In 1873, those lands were owned by: Pierron, Bernard, Oswald.

I also found John Gengler listed as owning 61.55 acres in section 36 which is a southeastern lake shore section, bordering the Town of Port Washington. All it says in the old transcription records is: "Lot 1"--HOWEVER! His brother, Franz Hengel owned 80 acres, the east 1/2 of the NW1/4 of section 36--this was later owned by Croatts, Mays and our Schanen family, too.

I wonder if Jean Gengler is John Gengler? I would think so, but...

Hi, Cindy: I don't know if I can help you directly, but your Genglers (Jean/John) and his wife, Margretta, are listed in my great great grandfather's land deed. This would be the land directly across from the side or parking lot of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake Church, Town of Belgium, WI, i.e., the land fronts Highway D, right at the crossroads of Hwy D and Lake Church Road in the heart of Lake Church. The business built on that land is still open yet today.
John Gengler first bought the land on May 3, 1847. It was the West half of the South West Quarter of Section 13, Town 12, Range 22 east. This was recorded June 24, 1847 and was located in Vol. C. of Ozaukee County Deeds, page 144. Then, on June 2e, 1847, John probably turned a fast profit and sold the land to Peter Canoes (spelling of Peter's name changed later on to Knaus). This is in the same volume on page 145. I could send you a picture of the buildings that were put on this land. In 1893, my great great grandfather, Jacob SCHANEN bought the business on this land. It stayed in our family until almost 1964. There were many owners of this property after Genglers: John Longly, Paul Ronk, William Wiltgen, Nic Ronk, Peter Delles, J. Lauermann and Mike Bink, J. B. Krier, etc., before our family owned it.

LOL! One of these days I'll stop being dyslexic regarding Hengels and Genglers. If you look at the prior post, I tried to say Franz Hengel was John Gengler's brother. Skip those sentences. The two men DID have land next to each other, just as I wrote, but I musta been so exited to see Gengler's name, that I just equated Hengel with Gengler...you know how that goes when ya spend too many hours per day doing genealogy. ~¿o

I think Franz Hengel is not Franz Gengler because Hengel bought his land in Ozaukee county after Gengler died in 1853. Sounds like you are getting a lot of great info though. I plan on being in PW at the Historical Soc. Tuesday so maybe I can shed some light on the question then.
