Genglers and Hengels

Hi, Jim: say, I don't want to mislead anyone. There WERE Hengels here, too. It's just that when I was looking at the plat map during my 15th hour straight of doing genealogy, I just started "blending" the two names--for some reason, every time I read these two names, I get goofy over them. In fact, John Gengler had land next to Franz Hengel. If you check WI land records, you'll find that both of these names were here as patentee land owners. Hey, on another note, are you of the Port Washington BECKS?
I went to school with JoAnne Beck and my Mom always said we were distant cousins or something. Best wishes, Melissa

Franz Gengler

Thanks much for the info. Franz Gengler of Ozaukee county who was John's brother is likely Franz Hengel who you have listed as owning land. I can see how the notoriously poor old handwriting could be misinterpreted. There were several John Genglers in the area at that time, one, of which, was Franz Gengler's son, my great grand uncle. Jean Gengler is most definitely John Gengler; I have seen the names used interchangeably several times. Franz was a grocer and died in 1853.

GENGLERS, more info

You will find John GENGLER listed in: The History of Washington and Ozaukee Counties, 1881, by Western Historical Co., Chicago, pub. John is listed on pages: 481, 492, 517. Hengel Was 1847 landowner

Hi: you are absolutely correct. Hengel does not equal Gengler---that's what I've been trying to tell people. I made a simple relational mistake when I was tired, i.e., that John Gengler had 61.55 acries right next door to his "brother" Franz Hengel's land--LOL!! However, it is not accurate to say that Gengler was here before Franz Hengel came here. Hengel was here much earlier than 1853--in fact, he was a patentee landowner in Town 12, Range 22E, Section 36 on May 13, 1847----that's just one day after John Gengler got patentee land right next door to him in the same section of the same township. (This is what I meant in an earlier post when I said that the statements I made were correct, it's just that the two men weren't brothers--when I'm zoned-out from too much local genealogy, I sometimes equate Hengel with Gengler--I think it's because I had an interest in both names because both were here relatively early, becoming patentee landowners). I have a copy of the entire Ozaukee County, old, hand-scripted government document of all initial landowners in Ozaukee County. I'm not sure, but perhaps you were tracking these families actual residences in Port Washington, and not their land purchases elsewhere in the county? Best wishes, Melissa

Cynthia,

Below there is an addition to the information which I may have already sent you. I am VERY interested in exchanging information with you on the DIDERICH line!!!

GENGLER:
MICHELS, LINGER, LENGER, HAUSMANN, THELEN, HETEBRUEG,
OLLINGER, FISCHER, DIDERICH

I have just found out that some of my collateral lines are related to the GENGLER's.
There were three GENGLER's who signed my great grandfather's (Dr. Joseph
LINGER) funeral book back in 1941.

Dr. Joseph LINGER's father was Dr. Christian LINGER--who had changed his
name from LENGER to LINGER at some point in time. A sister of Christian
LINGER/LENGER was Margaret LENGER who married a DIDERICH!!!

Yesterday, I was able to get up to the Washington County Courthouse in West
Bend, Wisconsin. It appears that the Gengler's may have settled in that County in or
around the Town of Trenton.

Other related names may include: MICHELS, LINGER, LENGER,
HAUSMANN, THELEN, HETEBRUEG, OLLINGER, and FISCHER.

I am also very interested in any families who settled/lived in an area of Milwaukee
County known as GRANVILLE and ENGELSBERG. Some attended a a mission
church (St. Martin's) on what is now Appleton Ave..the church is no longer in
existence, but the cemetery is still there. I am told that the church records are in the
keeping of St. Agnes Church in Butler...originally it was a mission extension of St.
Anthony's in Fussville, Waukesha County.

I would be interested in exchanging information with you, however, I will be
relocating shortly after Christmas (Dec 26th 2001-January 7th 2002). My address
after that time will be:
snokes@tscnet.com

snail mail:
Susan
27532 State Hwy 3 NE
Poulsbo, WA 98370

I look forward to hearing from you (or anyone other researchers possibly related to
this line) who may read this in the future.
