Re: Steffen/Sampe family in Milwaukee's German Newspapers Index

"... My Friedrich Sampe married Johanna Schrieber, and their son, Emil, married Anna, the daughter of Wilhelm Steffen and Wilhelmina Janke ..."

There was a brief marriage announcement in the local German papers for E. Sampe & Anna Steffen; and later the death notices for the fairly young "Mrs. Prof. Anna Sampe" (née Steffen). In another clipping Prof. Emil Sampe is pictured with graduates of Lutheran High School class of 1918; his own death notices appear a couple of years later. Mrs. Wilhelmine Janke Steffen's death notices are also found in the German papers (referencing surnames like Baars). If Wilhelm & Wilhelmine Steffen married in Nov., there may be matches to that couple in the multiple wedding anniversary photos/clippings I've indexed for Mr. & Mrs. Wilhelm Steffen. If your Fred. Sampe died in Manitowoc, there was an obit. for that name in 1937.
All this information is indexed in "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950). There are about 50 Sampe / Samp, and 300+ Steffen entries or references in the current data file.
Gary Rebholz, compiler/editor
Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Indexing Milwaukee's German newspapers continuously since 2007... helping family researchers collect evidence of our historic German-American culture.

William Small served in the Civil War with Company K, Wisconsin 24th Infantry from August 21, 1862 until June 6, 1865. He is buried next to his wife, Sarah Caroline Harmison Small, and his brother, Benjamin Small, at Lake View Cemetery, Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

According to his pension papers, William Small came to Eau Claire in 1870 and was a boarder in the home of Isaac Harmison and Eunice Barrett Harmison when he first arrived in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He and their daughter, Sarah Caroline Harmison, were married in 1871. William and Sarah, along with her parents, Isaac and Eunice Harmison, homesteaded farms in Barron, Wisconsin from 1875 to the early 1890's. Isaac and Eunice lived with William and Sarah at the time of their deaths.

In the papers he was required to fill out in order to receive a pension through his service in the Civil War, the question was asked: "Have you ever before, or do you intend, to marry anyone else?"; to which William replied: "I have been married to my beloved wife for more than 20 years and hope to continue to have the privilege for many years to come."

When World War One broke out, the Ladies of the Salvation Army had written an article in the local newspaper bemoaning the fact that they were unable to knit sweaters and scarves 'for the boys overseas' as they weren't able to obtain knitting needles due to shortage of materials. William Small, by then an elderly man, took it upon himself to cut done a tree or two in his back yard and whittled more than 200 pairs of knitting needles, for which the good Ladies thanked him in a letter to the editor of the Eau Claire Telegram that also featured a picture of him. I have a pair of the knitting needles my 2nd great grandfather made, in my possession.

An apparently humble man, he purchased a large stone monument for his brother, Benjamin, when Benjamin died and had a loving memoriam to his brother engraved upon it. William provided for much smaller stones for himself, and his wife, Sarah Caroline, upon his own death. William and Sarah are buried side-by-side behind the large Small monument of brother, Benjamin, in Lake View Cemetery, Eau Claire County, Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

William and Sarah retired from farming in the early 1900's, and retired to a large home on 7th Street in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He spent his 'free time' doing carpentry work for himself and his neighbors. The home stayed in the Small/Snyder family until his granddaughter, Evelyn Louise Snyder's marriage.

Here's the land patent for William Woodward and James Clyman. James Clyman was a friend of William Woodward. They bought 160 acres of land together in 1843. James Clyman was an explorer who wrote journal entries about his adventures mostly in the old west. A profile was written about him in 1978 in American Heritage magazine.

Once you fill in all the data, and gone through all the historic English language newspapers for clippings, the German papers may have some surprises for you. Particularly if you have several layers of German-American ancestry in the area. Contrary to age-old advice within the local genealogy/library community, these papers are not copies of the old Milw. Jrnl. and Milw. Sent. (and local German-American cultural groups refuse to believe they exist).

"Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950).
Gary Rebholz, compiler/editor
Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Indexing Milwaukee's German newspapers continuously since 2007... helping family researchers find their ancestors among Milwaukee's 99%.

The docs you need to obtain are:

1) The death cert of Wendy Ellen Stigall
2) The marriage record of Wendy Ellen Stigall, (if there is more than one, all of them).
3) The birth/and or bap record of Wendy Ellen Stigall, if Stigall is not her maiden name, then you need to find out what that was.

Any one of theses documents, and the more the better, should confirm her parentage, hence who "JC" was. Marriage and birth/bap records are the primary sources of data, a death cert is secondary. Similar records for her siblings might help you sort out your story.

A posting primer:

The field for "SURNAMES" is for surnames or variations of the surname included in the body of the post. You can edit your post by the clicking the edit link in the upper right of your post.

You submitted this post twice on this board, this happens on occasion, you can deleted the duplicate by going to the one without replies and hitting the delete in the upper right corner of the post

"It's a sad story ... any and all information is warranted and much appreciated."

If you use the "%" wildcard character in a search at www.wisconsinhistory.org you come up with 16436 potential matches for a J.C. (3243 births, 2747 deaths, 8554 marriages). In my own database I have about 500 matches for a J. C. These resources may be too early for your time frame. Unfortunately neither data base allows for searching by sex. You could go to the Milwaukee County Register of Deeds offices and search their indeces for your J. C. (one appointment per week, 4 hours only, $7 to look at any record after 1929). Their staff would be happy to help. Librarians can be very helpful for this kind of search (a relief from reference requests for current stock quotes and weather reports), or any volunteer at the area Family History Centers would be happy to help. Good luck!

Gary Rebholz
Milwaukee, Wis.

"Milwaukee County Atlas 1876" excerpt: Daniel R. Small was born in Kentucky in 1807. His wife, Electa Woodward, born in Park Co., Indiana in 1825. Mr. Small came to Wisconsin March 5, 1836; she, in 1839. Mr. Small selected a part of Sec. 14 for his home in Granville Township and from a high ground on his farm can be seen a portion of Lake Michigan, with passing vessels, about 5 miles distant. His wife died in February, 1864. They had: Benjamin, born March 7, 1841, William, born December 10, 1842, Emily Elizabeth, born June 13, 1844, and Martha Ellen, January 31, 1846.

(Martha)Ellen Small, daughter of Daniel and Electa Small, married on January 28, 1873 in East Granville, to Clark Olds, son of Isaac and Harriett Olds, he a carpenter, born in Kankakee Co., Illinois.

Daniel's farmland consisted of 79 acres on NW corner of W. Good Hope Rd. and 43rd St. He donated land to the East Granville School on the NW corner there in 1842 and for the East Granville Cemetery in 1858, next to the school."

The plot map of the former E. Granville Cemtery, shows that Daniel Small owned plot #9. All of the bodies were removed in 1968-69 for the widening of Good Hope Road and were reburied. The body of his father-in-law, William Woodward, was re-interred to Wisconsin Memorial Park in Milwaukee.

Purchased 44 acres of land from sister-in-law, Martha Woodward Hopkins and her husband, Perry Hopkins, September 13, 1855.

An artist drew a sketch of the farm resident of "Daniel R. Small, Esquire", a copy of which is in my possession.

According to his obituary, Daniel Rees(e) Small was a man of "honesty and virtue, with a sterling character".

It's a sad story. My mother passed when I was almost ten years old... Wendy Ellen Stigall, and at my mother's funeral, I found out that my grandfather was not my grandfather! The man that was there at every baseball game, etc. was the father of my aunts and uncle (Susan, Ingrid, Charles). At the funeral a man walked up to me and said he was my grandfather, all I was told was that his name was JC. I assume those are initials, but not sure. From what my aunts would give me... not much, was that he used to hang at a bar called Yancy's. I remember Yancy's bar because I would go there when I was little with my grandmother (Mamie Thompson). My past is very broken and I would like to know my history. any and all information is warranted and much appreciated.

Hi Mark,

Thank you for the information on Electa's brother, James.

My information is that the bodies of Daniel, Electa and her father, William were disinterred from the cemetery in Granville and removed to another cemetery when the nearby road in Granville was widened. I was able to find where Electa and her father were re-interred; unfortunately, no one knows where Daniel was re-buried (neither the city or county of Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Co. Historical Society nor the Milwaukee Co. Genealogical Society have the information) Rather ironic given that it was Daniel Small who donated the land for the cemetery to Granville in the first place.

I've also not been able to get beyond William Woodward unfortunately.

Have additional information on Daniel and Electa if you're interested.

Hope

Hi,

I am the great great grandson of James Clyman Woodward, brother of Electa Woodward. See my phelps/woodward family tree for more info. Their father was William Woodward of Granville, WI. Unfortuneatly, I cannot trace the Woodwards father back than William. My mother was Iris Woodward. I have found info. concerning the East Granville Cemetery which was donated by Donald Small and Electa Woodward Small. William Woodward was also buried there.

Mark Phelps

This is an old post, so I assume more dates have been collected, but all of these Germanic surnames (except Reibahlinger) are represented in the local resource "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950). These include an obit. for a Mrs. Peter Heinz, T/Greenfield. Both Heinz and Heintz spellings should be considered in a search.

Carl Anton Kau has a couple of entries in these papers from as early as 1856 to his obit. in 1908.

Gary Rebholz, compiler/editor
Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Indexing Milwaukee's German newspapers continuously since 2007... helping family researchers find their ancestors among Milwaukee's 99%.

Try the Mathias Jaeger, T/Greenfield, died in 1904 at 80/81 yrs. depending on the record. His death notices are in the local German papers. German naming customs (compound names) may make it hard to prove his parent's names unless you find something like an IGI entry or church record with full name and birth date.

Otherwise, the German papers have a wedding anniversary photo for a Mr. & Mrs. Mathias Jaeger in Nov. 1902 that might include just a caption or brief bio.

There are about 400 Jaeger, and 80 Jäger entries or references found in "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950). There are some Yaeger, but no Yager, found in the current data file.
Gary Rebholz, compiler/editor
Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Indexing Milwaukee's German newspapers continuously since 2007... helping family researchers find their ancestors among Milwaukee's 99%.

"... I have still not had a chance to look at your index. If is online yet?"

Nope, not online. It's too bad the public library summarily rejected my offer of the project as a gift, but my restriction was too steep: direct access by the public to the ongoing indexing. (Between you and me, it's a lib'arian thing; I've observed the influence of some really bad actors hanging around the downtown library: retirees, academics, genealogy queens and other entitlement types - if they can't put their name on it, they ain't gonna let it happen in their 'hood.)

THE INDEXING CONTINUES!

"Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950).
Gary Rebholz, compiler/editor
Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Indexing Milwaukee's German newspapers relentlessly since 2007... helping family researchers find their ancestors among Milwaukee's 99%.

For anyone still researching this family, there many possible matches to the names in this thread found in a newer resource: "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950). There are over 350 entries and references like the 5 different Peter Roth names ranging from 1868 - 1929 and too many variations of Anna + Maria to list here.

Gary Rebholz, compiler/editor
Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Indexing Milwaukee's German newspapers continuously since 2007... helping family researchers find their ancestors among Milwaukee's 99%.

I am in possession of two photos related to this family which were probably taken in Kossuth Co., Iowa in the early 1900's to 1910. The first is of Paulina's birth family Charles Stagg and the second is one of Charles and Paulina, perhaps a wedding photo. My ancestors lived in the same vicinity and the photos were among their things. I would be very happy to pass these on to descendents. The census for 1940 led me to Milwaukee and I am hoping some descendants are still living there.

I've indexed about 150 occurrences of the Rahn surname found in Milwaukee's German newspapers from 1844-1950. These are part of the collection: "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items". Other surnames referenced with Rahn include: Hoffmann Wüstenhöser Pischel Krause Falkner Besemann Heidtmann Treichel Blossei Wegner Ramm

Organization of this project started in fall 2007, and a major portion of the data was made available to the public in Sept. 2008.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
compiler/editor

"I am researching George Kranz and Johanna Flaumm. I am researching Herman Rahn and Ricka Trichel. I am researching William E. Temple and Edith C. Herman ..."

Herman & Ricka Rahn published death notices in Milwaukee's German papers for 3 mo. old Herman Jr.; 33 years later Ulricka Treichel Rahn's notices were also published in the German papers. The well-known index of these papers has about 65 Kranz and 10 Flaum entries or references but no match to your query. No match for Temple and Herman either.

"Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950).
Gary Rebholz, compiler/editor
Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Indexing Milwaukee's German newspapers continuously since 2007... helping family researchers find their ancestors among Milwaukee's 99%.

Tony
My great grandfather is Simon Kohn born in Bohemia in 28 Sep 1858 and emigrated to New York City. On your list "Simon 1857 to N.York". There is a good chance that this is the same person. Simon's parents are Daniel and Marie; Rose is a sister and there may be a brother David.
Do you have additional information? I can provide further information, if you feel it would help.
Don

"... Peter Fernekes d. 9 Oct 1893 of Milwaukee is the 2nd great-grand uncle of my husband. I am posting it to this board to see if there are any direct descendants or others with information on these soldiers from Wisconsin ..."

There are four different types of clippings for this Peter Fernekes (d. 9 Oct 1893) found in Milwaukee's German newspapers: death notice, obit., burial article and Danksagung - possibly a 5th type - a fraternal org. notice. These are found in multiple versions in multiple papers. I have no idea how much detail is included in these clippings. Depending on the paper, the name will be spelled either Fernekes or Ferneckes.

There are about 95 entries or references to the combined spelling of the name found in "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950).
Gary Rebholz, compiler/editor
Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Indexing Milwaukee's German newspapers continuously since 2007... helping family researchers find their ancestors among Milwaukee's 99%.
