I'm looking for the death info on a husband and wife. Hopefully the info will be located in the Wisconsin deaths 1820-1907 index on this site. The first one is Theodore Smith (Schmitz, Schmidt), b. abt 1804 in Prussia. He died abt 1860 in La Crosse. His wife was Anna Maria Smith, b. abt 1819ish in Prussia. She would have died between the 1880-1900, as in basic searching I can't find her in the 1900 census or beyond. I'm hoping this info will contain where in Prussia they were from, actual birth and death dates and Anna' maiden name. Any help is appreciated. If it helps, their children were Julia, Mary A, Elisabeth Louisa (my gg-grandmother), John, Joseph, Frank(lin), Henry, Julia and George.

I'm compiling a history of the family of Edward and Sophia (Beau) Steiner. Their daughter, Mary (Sophia Louise Marie), married Peter Ledegar in Milwaukee in 1868. She and Peter lived in LaCrosse for many years, had 13 children nine of whom lived to adulthood. Mary died there in 1903. I'm sure there are still descendants in the area and would love to contact some of them. I'd particularly like to find pictures of Mary and Peter (dod 12/1929, Minneapolis) The daughters married, that I know of, men named Fred Miller, Omro Aiken, Emil Schroeder and Henry May.

Mary was a great-great aunt of mine.

I'd appreciate any help or contact information.

Thank you.

Karyl

Karyl

Gjestvang. born 1854 died may 1927. He married Anna Freng somewhere around 1887 maybe and they had 7 children. Cora, Luella, Mabel, Agnes, Esther, Amanda and Evelyn. I believe this is a relation to my Gjestvangs who are from the trempealeau area but I was wondering if there would be anyone that would be able to go to the court house and get the information off the death record to show who his parents were? Please. I would also like other information from the Gjestvangs from that area but wanted to start here.
thanks in advance
Bobi Hembd

Balltown Cemetery, Vernon Co, MO Renovation - Wisconsin Civil War Burials

Some fantastic renovation and preservation of Balltown Cemetery, Vernon County, Missouri's oldest cemetery, is being done -- see newspaper article reprinted at www.rootsweb.com/~motcogs/ Balltown Cemetery is located north of Nevada, MO, about 1 mile west of U.S. 71 at the Horton exit in Vernon County. More information about the renovation and accompanying pictures will be posted on the Tri-County Genealogical Society website.

During the Civil War, four members of the 3d Wisconsin Cavalry were buried here in what is now the G.A.R. lot:

Hiram C. DAVIS who served under the name of John H. JOHNSON, Co F.

George R. KELLY, Co F.

John GRUMMONS, Co A.

Josiah DAVIS, Co A.

A listing of the known burials in the G.A.R. lot is at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~motcogs/metz_gar_members.h...

"Found No Bushwhackers" The 1864 Diary of Sgt. James P. Mallery, Co A, 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry, gives details of the day-to-day life of the Wisconsin soldiers while stationed at Balltown, Missouri, as does "In the Devil's Dominions: A Union Soldier's Adventures in "Bushwhacker Country"" the Journal of Charles W. Porter, Co F, 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry. Copies of these two books can be obtained from the genealogy website above.

A dedication of the new military monuments and G.A.R. lot in Balltown Cemetery is being planned for Veterans Day, November 11, 2008.
The family lived fairly close to Rockland, so I'm guessing they attended church there. Any ideas of where I might try writing for church records for this time period?

I'm seeking the marriage date and location of Jessie Amanda Johnson, born 1 Jul 1894 in La Crosse, La Crosse County, WI and died sometime in Jun 1973 in Yuma, Yuma County, Arizona. She is the sister of my grandfather, Harry D Johnson who was born in Lacrosse County, married in Vernon County and died in Trempeaeau County. Jessie married Otto Edward Davidson, probably sometime before 1916 when their oldest child was born. Otto was born 22 Aug 1891 in Wisconsin (probably in LaCrosse County) and died sometime in May 1971 in Yuma, Yuma County, Arizona.

If anyone knows the marriage date and location of Jessie Amanda Johnson and Otto Edward Davidson or the missing information on these 2 people I would appreciate hearing about it.

Thanks,

Dave

I have been to the La Crosse Library database and found a little on the Mormon Coulee Cemetery and would like more information on the area of Shelby and the people that settled there. Mainly the George and Elizabeth Markle family.
Thanks Lee Markle

Miller Broom Company in La Crosse

Hi,

I'm looking for anyone who has connections with the August Miller family in LaCrosse. August Miller started his broom factory in LaCrosse with some help from a farm hand of his. My great grandfather, Theodore Gerbig, was listed in the LaCrosse City Directories for 1884-1886 as being a broom maker at the Miller Broom Company. I'd like to find any old pictures that might show him with the Miller family or in the broom factory. Theodore went from Jefferson Co. sometime before 1883 and lived in LaCrosse at the time of his marriage to Augusta Schmidt. The ceremony took place back in Jefferson Co. near Hubbleton, but they lived in LaCrosse after their marriage until moving to the Marion, WI area sometime after 1886.

I am also trying to find a connection between the Miller family in Jefferson Co. and the one in LaCrosse. Both Miller families lived in Milwaukee from 1851 to 1853.

Thanks for any possible leads.

Marie
Erastus HOWE Biography, b. 1829 NY to WI

From "History of La Crosse County, Wisconsin", 1881, p. 856 - 857.

Town of Barre

ERASTUS HOWE was born June 22, 1829, in the town of Cobleskill, Schoharie Co., N. Y. When 4 years old, his mother died, and when he was 8 years old, his father married again. He lived with his father until he was 22 years old, then started in the world for himself. Was married to Mary Jane Burton Oct. 12, 1851; then worked for her father the first winter, and in the spring of 1852 bought 25 acres of timber land, and cut away the brush. His wife, then his only helper, burnt the brush, and in a few days they had a spot ready to build a big shanty in the hemlock timber; cleared 2 acres the first year. In the fall built a comfortable house, with four rooms, and battled on with the old hemlocks. On Feb. 27, 1854, welcomed their first addition to the family. When hearing so much of the Western prairies, they concluded to sell their land, and, with $230, started, April 17, 1855, and landed in La Crosse on the 27th of April, and had $140 left; lost their trunk, and was obliged to use some of the money to buy soom goods before they left town. Then started for La Crosse Valley; in the town of Barre, found a piece of land and bought it. It had a shanty, 10x12, and it was covered with basswood bark, and when it rained, the streams were larger indoors than out. In this they lived till fall; their furniture was a couple of benches made of slabs, and their first table was a stable door, and many a day it was surrounded with new friends to eat the wild game, for they had plenty of that, and they all seemed to enjoy their new home. They had only a few neighbors, and they were of the best. Bull snakes were the only visitors they did not like. Sept. 13, 1855, the oldest daughter was born, and a terrible rain set in, and day after day there was not a dry place in the shanty to lay down, and all that could be done was to sit up and catch the water in dishes. Mr. Howe says: "This is what I called hard times. I had not one dime to fix the shanty; I could not get more than one day's work in a week, and then go four or five miles to get that." That same fall, he cut timber of his own, and built a good log shanty, and made shakes, and covered it, and then added more furniture, and, as Mr. Howe says: "After we had settled in our new shanty, we felt richer than to day in a brick house, and plenty of furniture and all the comforts of life. We could see now and then three or four deer at a time cross from one place of timber to the other; wolves were plenty; if we had fresh meat they knew it, and would get up a great howl, but a couple of rifle-shots would give us peace for awhile." At this time he had no team, but he used his neighbor, Martin Allen's. After struggling along with no team, no tools, and paying 12 per cent on borrowed money, he obtained a loan of Robert Smith, and bought an ox team. He then took 30 acres of land about four miles from his home to work on shares; then paid Mr. Smith, and commenced work on his own land. He hewed out timber, built a barn, hog-pen and corn crib, and then built a good house. Lived six years on this farm, then I bought 38 acres in Bostwick Valley, and moved there. Rented his old farm two years, sold it, and bought 80 acres of land and 40 acres of timber, adjoining the 38. Here they lived eleven years, then moved to West Salem; went in partnership with Robert Rand for one year, making bricks; then went to Sparta, and bought 20 acres, and a brick-yard on it; carried on the brick business for seven years, and in this time purchased a good brick house and lot in the city of Sparta; then purchased 30 acres in the limits of the city, also another 78 acres, and has 2 acres in the city of La Crosse, bought in the fall of 1880; moved back on the farm in Bostwick Valley, where he now lives.

[I am not related to this family and have no further information.
