Family of Henry and Mary Emily (Horton) Francisco

I am attempting to trace the descendants of Henry and Mary Emily (HORTON) Francisco. The two appear in the 1850 US Census for Oakland, Jefferson Co., WI with Henry heading a household containing a curious mix of family and hired farmhands. The couple had eight children...five of whom were born in New York and three in Wisconsin. As far as I have been able to determine, they were:

1. Theressa P. Francisco, born circa 1846 in NY
2. Henry A. Francisco, born circa 1838 in NY, married Seldina ?, daughter Neenah Francisco, son Henry J. Francisco, living in Iowa in 1870 and 1880.
3. Newton Oscar Francisco, born 16 October, 1840 in Oneida Co., NY, married Marcella GOVE 20 February, 1862 in Delavan, Walworth Co., WI, died 18 February, 1932 in Delavan, one daughter, Mary Alice Francisco, who never married.
4. Mary Emily Francisco, born circa 1841 in Nre York, married Owen DAVIS (1837-1917) circa 1865, three children named Carlis, Rosie and Daisy Davis, living in Todd Co., MN in 1880 and 1900.
5. John J. Francisco, born circa 1843 in NY, married Mary ?, children Maud Francisco and Roy Francisco, borth of whom were born in Iowa.
6. Charles Francis "Frank" Francisco, born 2 September, 1845 at Kochkonong, Jefferson Co., WI, married Mary Evelyn "Eve" HARVEY circa 1872, son Louis Francisco and twin daughters Maude Buttercup Francisco (married Lewis Merrill SYMMES) and Mable Rose Francisco.
7. Erastus H. Francisco, born circa 1848 in Wisconsin, married Maggie ? October, 1869, 1870 living in Crawford Co., IA.
8. Samuel Clayton Francisco, born September, 1853 in Wisconsin, married 1. Unknown, 2. Fanny ?, daughter Marcella, also a second living child of unknown sex.

Mary Emily Horton Francisco died just short of her 100th birthday on 20 March, 1911 at Villard Twp., Todd CO., MN. Both she and her husband (who predeceased her on 13 April, 1865 at the age of 54) are buried in Rock Lake Cemetery, Lake Mills, Jefferson Co., WI.

Members of this line are descended from Revolutionary War veteran, Levi Francisco and his first wife, Sarah VAN DER COOK.
Greetings!

I am searching for the parents of Myrtle Burdick who was born in Watertown, WI, about 1887. She later moved to Denver, Colorado, (in 1908?) where she married Winfred Boddy in 1911. She died in 1915, aged "about 28." Burial took place in her husband's hometown of Norton, Kansas. Obituary states she leaves to mourn her mother, three sisters, and three brothers...but no more information is given about them. Hoping someone has Myrtle in their family tree and can assist. Thank you very much. Sincerely, Patricia Boddy Tharp

Does anywone know if the Wisconsin KRUSE families are related to the Cass County, Illinois KRUSE families?

I am searching for Hie A. and Wibkie Tholen Kruse. They came to America around 1849, but we cannot find them on the census for 1850. Some of the KRUSE families came landed in New Orleans, went to St. Louis where there was a Colera epidemic, then to Chicago and then to Franklin County, Wis, and then back to the Arenzville, Cass County area.

Hie and Wikie's children were sons: Adolph, Henry, and Phillip, and daughters: Anna, Catherine "Katie", and and Fredricka "Rickie".

I am trying to figure out if Hie & Wibkie followed the same route and exactly where in Hanover / Germany they came from. I know they were in Illinois and Kansas, but need to fill in the blanks between Germany and Illinois.

I am looking for someone who knows how I might get in touch with an Allen or Christine (Quirin)Lemke. The last I knew from an obit, they resided in Fort Atkinson WI. I did a search on Lemke and a Lemke Fence Co came up in my search in the Jefferson Co area. I have reason to believe Christine may be a relative of the Youngs (Jungs), whom my grandmother was related to. I believe Christine is in someway related to a Nephew of my grandmother Salome Jung who m. Henry Karcher in Wolfskirchen, Alsace, France(then Germany..now French occupied) The Karcher's emigrated in 1923, and lived in Delavan, WI.Both are deceased. I have been doing genealogy and realize we are related to the Quirins. Rufus Young was her nephew. I am trying to see how the Quirins are actually related to the Youngs. I did know a Quirin when I went to School in Delavan over 35 years ago and did not realize we were related.
If anyone could help point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it,

Thanks,

Penny Karcher-Kresl
Does anyone know anything about the Northwestern University that was in Watertown?

I have an ancestor who was a Reverand. In the 1910 and 1920 census, his place of employment was the university at the "Stewart College." I haven't been able to find much about this university (or my ancestory, for that matter).

My ancestor's name was John G. Koeninger. His wife was Sophie M. [Griese] Koeninger. They had three children: Marie (Mayme) who married a professor, Alexander Sitz, Helene (single), and Leonhart, who also became a reverand, married Edna P. Frank.

Thank you!
I am looking for 3 obituaries. Claudia R. Flath Warren died on 18 Sept 1982 in Holland, MI. Wade Wallace Warren died 4 April 1982 in Zeeland, MI. Martha Lehman Flath died in 1923. All three are buried in Ebenezer Moravian Cemetery in Watertown. I have not found an obituary in Michigan for any of them. Is there an address where I can write to find out if the cemetery or mortuary used would have a copy of an obit for any of them if none ran in a paper back there? I live in Colorado so I can't go check things out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! He was then told that he was really a Hall, son of Hiram Hall, and he took the name of Hall. Would appreciate any information that would help pin this down.

I found this statement on a web site
“Helenville is in Jefferson County, in the Watertown-Fort Atkinson metro area. The community was named after Helen Bullwinkle, wife of the postmaster.”
The same page indicates the Community was previously known as Bullwinkle.

I research Bullwnkleand Derivatives world wide and find this very interesting as most of the WI families used the Bullwinkel Spelling. Can anyone help with when the Community was named , and/or who Helen was?

I suspect she was Helena, the first wife of Ortgies Bullwinkel who died between 1860 and 1869, but I have not seen him listed as a Postmaster?

Pete

I am looking for info on an early German group of settlers in the Concord area of Jefferson County. I'm thinking they are all related--

1. William Kehl and his wife Frederika (children - Frederick, August, Amelia, Carl Herman, and Fredricka)
2. Frederick Michael Kehl and his wife Wilhelmine "Minnie" Jaeger (children - Emilie and Carl Frederick)
3. Carl Jaeger and his wife Fredricka Kehl (children Louisa, William Charles, and Wilhelmina)
4. Johann Milbrath and his wife Johanna "Hannah" Kehl (children Johan Frederick, Carl August, Mena, Hannah, Wilhelm, and Louisa)

Frederick Kehl and his family are living in Jefferson county in the 1860 census, I believe they immigrated in 1856. The four families are living right next to eachother in Concord in the 1870 census. Many are buried in the St. Stephen's Lutheran Cemetery in Concord.

Any and all help on this group would be appreciated!

Looking for information on the marriage of
Sarah Dickinson Cox was born June 04, 1839 in Bicker, Lincolnshire, England.
She married Edward N. Palmer on December 25, 1858 in probably Lake Mills, Jefferson County, Wisconsin where he was then teaching.
Edward N. Palmer was born April 16, 1834 in Erie County, Pennsylvania and died January 31, 1889 at home in Tomah, Monroe County, Wisconsin.
When 20 years old he left the family farm in Erie and moved to Lake Mills, Wisconsin and taught school. He married Sarah Cox of Tomah in 1959 (some say) – they were both teachers in Tomah after they married. He was later a principal at Tomah and in the insurance business. In 1861 he became a charter member of the Masonic Lodge at Tomah. He was also an artist, and a photographer. He had two brothers and five sisters.
Any help with this family is appreciated,
lindajcox3@hotmail.com

In the 1900 Federal Census for Jefferson County, I find Thomas FLANNAGAN, age 57, as an inmate in the Jefferson County Insane Asylum for the Chronic Insane. He is perhaps the same Thomas FLANAGAN who died in Jefferson County in 1911? What is the history of the asylum? Is there an attached cemetery? Are there surviving records? Thomas could be my long missing great-great-grandfather who abandoned his family in Rockford, Winnebago Co., IL in 1890.

Hello,

My ancestor, Vetle Torjussen (AKA Wetle Torgerson - b. Kviteseid, Telemark, Norway), his wife Karen Kristine Frantsdatter, and their young son Torjus arrived at the Skoponong settlement in La Grange Township, Walworth, in 1843. Karen died sometime around 1848. Church records for Skoponong Church do not exist for that time, however. Then Vetle remarried, supposedly on 23 Jan 1850, to Marthe Halvorsen (Halvorsdatter). I am wondering if somebody has access to the Skoponong church records who could verify this second marriage. I would be very grateful. Thanks!

Sincerely,
Jan

Does anyone have any information on how I can contact someone at the church and have them look up information in their records? I am missing a maiden name on Elizabeth Blaschka who died on 1 July 1890. I also do not see a tombstone for her husband Johann or John Blaschka who died about 1860. They had 10 children with at least one daughter-Johanna Blaschka (1853-1911) who is also buried there. Thanks for your help!

Norwegian Immigrants - Lutheran Church Records for Koshkonong/Skoponong in 1840s?

Hello,

My Norwegian ancestors, VETLE TORJUSSEN (TORGERSON in America) and KAREN KRISTINE FRANTSDATTER, immigrated in 1843. They had five children before Karen died, around 1848. By the 1850 U.S. Census, Vetle lived with his second wife, Marthe Halvorsdatter, in LaGrange township, Walworth. His name was spelled "Wattely Thurstin" by the enumerator. LaGrange was home to the Norwegian settlement called Skoponong, as well as Heart Prairie and Round Prairie.

I know that some of Karen's siblings lived at the Skoponong settlement. By 1853, most (including Vetle and Karen and children) moved west to Winneshiek County, Iowa, just south of Decorah.

My question is this: Does anybody know where the Lutheran records are kept for ANY nearby (Walworth/Jefferson counties) Norwegian settlement during the 1843-1850 time period? Lutheran church records for Skoponong only begin in 1850 (before Karen died). Koshkonong records (according to the LDS Family Search site) exist from 1844 onward. But where are these kept? Would the Koshkonong records include the Skoponong records? Whom do I write/e-mail/call?

It makes sense that my ancestors would live around Karen's siblings in LaGrange or Whitewater in Walworth. I don't believe they lived at Koshkonong settlement in Jefferson county...although I can't completely rule it out. So my focus is on LaGrange and Whitewater townships. By the way, I purchased Fred Kraege's "LaGrange Township Cemeteries," and my ancestors' names are not included...I know that their grave markers are likely lost, so they would not be mentioned in the three cemeteries of LaGrange. But I need to know if there are Lutheran church records for the time period I mentioned above. Many thanks to anybody who might be able to steer me in the right direction.

Sincerely,
Jan

Julius H. Rhodey emigrated to the U.S. from Prussia. He settled in Jefferson County, Wisconsin. Would like to find out who his parents are.

Julius married Laura Ann Forncrook on January 6, 1860. The couple had three children: Jane Rhodey, George E. Rhodey, and William Rhodey.

Julius fought in the Civil War and died of disease while his unit was in St, Charles, Arkansas County, Arkansas. Believe he was buried in the St. Charles area.
His wife remarried and had several more children.

I am trying to find out what happened to Julius's children, specifically WILLIAM RHODEY, who was born about 1864, in Wisconsin - I am assuming Jefferson County. Am looking for his exact date of birth and location.
William Rhodey married a woman by the name of Dora and they had two children: John Frank Rhodey (born in 1887)and William Arthur Rhodey (born in 1895). I believe that shortly after William Arthur Rhodey was born, the couple divorced. The mother, Dora, married a Lewis Cooley and William Rhodey married Lulu E. Rose.

All the dates of these events do not add up and I am looking for help in clarifying my information.
Looking for info on family of Reuben Mason KEEN. He and his first wife Sarah BATES came to the Milwaukee area about 1834, with children Mary Ann, Elisa, Sally (or Sarah), Phebe, Ephraim, Delia, Julia, and perhaps Roswell. They came to WI from Lewis Co., NY. I think they stayed in the Milwaukee area for a single winter, then moved to the Lake Mills, Jefferson Co., area. Family lore says that two of the women/girls were the first white women to cross the Rock River west of Milwaukee. Delia and Julia married Plumb brothers.

Reuben married his second wife Aner (family spelling; may have been Anna or Honor) EDWARDS, about 1837 (I guess Sarah died before then). They had 2 daughters, Fannie and Eunice.
"Aner" died about 1845. By that time I think the family had moved to the Grafton area.

Does anyone have info to contribute? Thanks.

Lorenzo D. Fargo obit - 1909

Jefferson County Union
Friday, April 30, 1909
page 2

Obituary
The death of LORENZO D. FARGO at his home in Lake Mills, Sunday, April 25, 1909, removes one of the strong, forceful men of the county, a pioneer, farmer, dairyman, banker, and philanthropist. The following sketch, evidently written by one who knew and loved him well, appeared in this week's Jefferson Banner:

Died, at his home on Mulberry Street, early Sunday morning, April 25, 1909, of physical breakdown, following an attack of pneumonia, Mr. LORENZO D. FARGO, aged 84 years. Mr. Fargo had been in feeble health all winter. He came to Lake Mills from western New York when a young man, being among the earliest settlers. He selected for his home, the farm on the Madison Road, which became the 'dearest spot on earth' to him until his death. With his wife, who was Miss Sarah Rich, of New York state, he labored to build up a Christian home, to uplift the community and to preserve and beautify the natural surroundings. While others were denuding the hillsides and roadsides of every tree and shrub, he was planting and cultivating. Conservation and wise use of natural resources was his economic creed.

Mrs. Fargo passed away early last autumn. Of their 5 children, two died in early childhood, a son died at the age of 15. Two daughters, Mrs. H.J. Anderson, of this city, and Mrs. Bicknell, of Los Angeles, CA, survive. There are 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren

Seven years ago our public library building, the joint gift of Mr. and Mrs. Fargo, was completed and opened to the public. A Christian of large faith and charity, a member of the Baptist Church and a helper of all churches, he was an example to the young. For some years he was Superintendent of the M.E. Sunday School at London. His last church office was that of trustee in the Congregational Church in this city. One of the provisions of the library gift was that the Bible should always have a place on the reading table. Another that temperance literature should be constantly supplied. When no longer able to personally carry on the work of their farm, Mr. and Mrs. Fargo moved to this city, where they entered into all the best social life of the community and by precept and example upheld civic righteousness.
________________________________________________________
Posted to share with others.
Jefferson County Union
Friday, May 27, 1898
page 7

In Memoriam
None feel the sense of desolation that death bringeth, like those whose beating hearts are riven by the stroke that falls on loved ones.

On Thursday of last week, was laid to rest amid tears, sweet flowers and sweeter sympathies, the manly form of E.M. JOHNSON, of Whitewater. Within but a few months, fell disease had laid him low, and the transition from radiant health to the silence of the tomb, seems to us irreconcilably brief.

In the flower and flush of a noble manhood, he was taken. All that is left to those who loved him is a cherished memory of the rare spirit, the generous heart, the brave, hopeful soul, that had unfailingly given them cheer.

It seems but a day since we met and greeted him, in that bright and happy home, where now sorrow and indescribable loneliness reign.

EDWARD JOHNSON was a man of noble impulses and enduring friendships. His influence upon his friends was elevating and ennobling.

To the world at large, he gave but feeble sign of the hidden riches of his soul, but for those he loved there was exhaled the sweet perfume of a brave, manly nature.

It is difficult to think of him as dead, for the memory of his cheery voice and smile lingers yet uppermost in our mind.
_________________________________________________________
Posted to share with others.

Jefferson County Union
October 9, 1931
page 3

CHARLES HAMLIN MAY
The death of Charles H. May, brother of G. Will May and Mrs. Kitty May Banks, occurred at the home of Mrs. Banks at Lake Ripley, Wednesday morning. Charles May was the youngest son of Chester May, one of the pioneers of Ft. Atkinson. For half a century the family lived on Merchants Ave. in what was later remodeled into the Paul Tratt home and recently sold by Mrs. Tratt to L.B Wesby. Charles May was a popular young man here in the "eighties" and for years clerked in the dry goods store run by his father in the building now occupied by Fred Schlei, druggist.

Later on Charles became a traveling salesman for the American Wire Co. and other interests. Recently his cattle ranch in Cuba has kept him away from here, but last year he made his old town a visit which ended with a memorable dinner party at the home of his brother at Lindenhurst, Lake Ripley, to which all the old boys still living and who were school companions of his were invited. He went back to Cuba but soon returned for a visit to Mayo Brothers, Rochester, MN, where it was discovered that he had a fatal malady of a cancerous nature. Since then he has been at the home of his sister awaiting the end. News of his death will be received with deep regret by all who knew him.
