Richardson and Burton Families

John V. Richardson (m. Lucy Wright) moved to Grant County from Missouri around 1845. Children were that I have found are: William, Charles R., Betsey, Walter, Henry Clay, Darius, Maxwell, Amos and J.C. (He is recorded that he had 10 sons and 2 daughters).

Charles R. Richardson married Candace Burton, 2 Nov 1858, Waterloo, Grant County, Wisconsin. Her father may have been a Woodson Burton who died in 1860 at Hurricane, Grant County, Wisconsin.

The whole Richardson family moved to California around 1860.

Is anyone familiar with this family?

I descend from Geo. garbisch who immigrated with the Lutherans from Prussia about 1840 - settled in Mequon WI

his wife was Marie Eliz. Riedel - and his son Johann who I descend from, married a Johanna Dorothea Schreiber & I descend from their 13th child Richard John

anyway, I am posting this hoping to find someone with some family photos of Geo and Johann or wife Johanna

I have the Garbisch garden book & I dont believe there were any photos in there of the above mentioned......and the photos are my favorite part because it makes my ancestors come alive

so I am hoping someone out there will have some - perhaps you just started doing genealogy & so no one knows you have a box full of photos.....or perhaps you have some photos since the Garbisch book was published...........or maybe you inherited a trunk from Aunt betty full of information & photos - I surely hope so.

So let me know if anyone has any photos at all - this would really make me so happy & add to the scrapbooks I am doing for my children on our family.

Thanks for listening Sue

I'm told that all birth, death, and marriage records form St. Malachy's Catholic at Clyde are now kept at Saint John the Baptist in Muscoda. I have not been able to get a return phone call and I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how to get in touch with someone so I could view those records? Thank you for any help you can provide. All for now, Larry Finley.

John Wilson d:1 July 1906 - where in 1905 Census?

I am trying to locate John Wilson in the 1905 WI State Census. In the Wisconsin Census Enumeration 1905 : Names of Ex-Soldiers and Sailors Residing in Wisconsin, June 1, 1905 it lists John Wilson's Post Office as Muscoda. I scanned through the census images for Muscoda town and village and have been unable to find him. I'm thinking maybe he was, as a widower, living with his yougest daughter, Laura Dothula (who I lost track of after the 1895 WI State Census. So, I have a couple of questions.
1 - Does anyone know what area was include in the Muscoda post office in 1905?
2 - Is there an index available for the 1905 WI State Census?

Thanks in advance for any help.
Mike Wilson

I have just got a different name on the birth certificate and would like to double check on this. We though his mother to be Alvaretta, on birth cert. it is Alberta! Thanks for your time.
HI,
I am still looking for info on the above people. Possibly they immigrated from the Hallingdal Valley and they did reside in the Dodgeville, WI area in 18794 and possible were in census as Andrew Peterson with birth date of 1833. Daughter Kari married Julius Hanson in 1874 at Dodgeville Lutheran church by O. Naess. Julius may have died between 1874 and 1888 and a Helge Peterson married Tosten or Osten Sveen in late 80's. May have been other children besides Kari, possible Julia.
Laurel Beale at lkbeale@vcweb.org

Democratic State Register | Watertown, Wisconsin | Monday, February 02, 1852 | Page 2

The "Fortune" diggings at Beetown remind the people there of the time when that Bee-tree was discovered, which turned out more honey and rich treasure than Samson's Lion. We learn from a gentleman who says he was in the hole, that chunks are being taken out, varying in weight from 100 to 1000 lbs.

RIEDEL - possible ties to my Marie ElizabethRiedel Garbisch from Prussia

I noticed many Riedel names up in the Granton WI area and wonder if someone out there in these families might have information that would tie my Riedel line to theirs/yours?

My line is a Marie Elizabeth Riedel who was born about 1802 and she married a George Garbisch & they immigrated from Prussia (Klein Ujeschutz Silesia) about 1840 - they came with Lutherans

anyway, this couple & their children lived in the Mequon area of WI and lived out their final days with daughter Johanna Garbisch who married a Wilhelm WEGNER (William Wagner) -

in the 1870s and 1880s, you can find George in the home of Wilhelm -

so because of the Riedel Ties already, and because some of the Garbisch line ended up moving to Clark CO WI, Grant and Granton areas, when I see RIEDEL names up there, I have to wonder, are they not related to my Marie E?

It is always worth asking - and finally DO YOU HAVE PHOTOS - I have a book called the Garbisch garden with much info but no photos of George & Marie Garbisch or Johanna their dau who married Wilhelm Wegner (if I remember right - lots of photos in there, but the further back we go, there are just not much in the way of pictures/portraits)

So anyone with info on the Riedels, please write

Or if you happen to have photos on any of the above mentioned people & their line would love to hear from you as photos are the absolute best

thanks for listening SUE

Schermerhorn Family

Looking for the parents of John J SCHERMERHORN / SCHAMERHORN. The family is from New York, and he died about 1859 in Grant Co, Wisconsin.

There are indications that John J SCHERMERHORN / SCHAMERHORN came from the area of Schoharie and Delaware counties in New York.

His widow Caroline b. 1804, NY is listed in the 1860 census of Grant Co, WI with her sons Benjamin b.1832, NY; Hiram b. 1838, OH, and John b.1842. Jeremiah b.1835, NY is also apparently another son. He is married and listed with his wife in the 1860 census of Grant Co, WI.

The names of the children are what leads me towards Schoharie and Delaware Counties.

1.	Benjamin is not a common name in the SCHERMERHORN family. John R. SCHEMERHORN b.1752 moved from Albany Co, NY to Schoharie Co, NY. He and his wife Catharine KNICKERBOCKER had a son named Benjamin b.1782. They also had a son named John J.; but this is apparently not the John J. that I am looking for.
2.	Hiram is more common in the SCHERMERHORN family, but still not common. The name Hiram also appears in the family in Schoharie County.
3.	Similar is the name Jeremiah – Although I do not see one in Schoharie, the name does appear in both Greene County and Otsego County.
4.	On of the most interesting connections is the name Adelbert. Adelbert is very unusual. Jeremiah b.1835 and his wife Margaret TINDALL named one of their sons Adelbert. Sarah Etta SCHERMERHORN b.1827, NY married Philo CROSS and they named a son Adelbert. They are listed in the 1850 census of Delaware Co, NY and moved to Iowa and then to Kansas. Sarah Etta was the daughter of Peter SCHERMERHORN of Schoharie Co, NY. Her mother was Abigail b.1793 (daughter of Jacob T. SCHERMERHORN and Sarah SHUTTS).

That’s all I can find to this point connecting John J SCHEMERHORN back to this area of New York.

More on John J. SCHEMERHORN – These are the only records I have found on him:

1852 State Census Clayton Co, IL: John SCHAMERHORN Male (5) Female (1)
1855 State Census Grant Co, WI: John SKEMMAHORN
1858 Land Grant, Grant Co, WI: John J SCAMMERHORN

I have not been able to find him in the 1840 or 1850 censuses, and do not know the year of his birth. From the places of birth of the children, it is evident that the family moved shortly after 1835 from New York, and made stops in Ohio and Iowa before settling in Wisconsin. They may have also been in Michigan and Illinois. The birth place of his son John b.1842 is listed in the 1860 as Michigan, the 1870 census as Illinois and the 1880 census as Ohio.

Appreciate any assistance.
Look for Help. Could someone look up a death in 1956 in Platterville, WI. Looking for Anna E. Wood Heathman only have a death year of 1956 and a old note that listed Mrs. A. E. Heathman Platterville, Wisconsin. Note may have been written between 1945 & 1950.
Anna E. Heatman was the wife of James S. Heathman . They had a daughter Florince, who she may have been living with. Only I don't know her married name.
Anna is buried in Iowa with her husband. James died in 1922 so she lived a long time after his death.
Florince was not the only child. Four children were born to this family. But Florince is the only one unacounted for, where Anna may have been.
Donna

Greetings.

I am planning a reunion and attempting to contact descendants of Jasper/Caspar KNAPP. His son Clark married Rosa Marie WEILAND, and they had two daughters. I have no information about the daughters after the 1930 census.
History of Grant County 1881, Lookup Please!

I need another lookup in History of Grant County. I found proof that Nellie Dixon is the daughter of Alvin M. Dixon (only took 5 years). She is a product of Alvin's first marriage and the only other marriage listed is to Louisa or Louesa O'hara in 1861 Grant County. There are several write ups on O'hara's in Grant and I am hoping that will provide me with family for Louisa.
On the 1860 census she is listed as Oharrow-may be a mistake but there is an Oharro in the book as well.

Oharro- page 624
Ohara-678, 679, 688, 690, 724

Any mention of Louisa/Louesa/Louise? She was born about 1838 in Wisconsin according to the 1860 Census.

Thank you,
Jaymi

Honest Man Found: Erskine L. Auel of Beetown (1934)

Chronicle Telegram, The (Elyria, Ohio) > 1934 > July > 18

Honest Man Found

In this day of crime, ranging from petty theft to wholesale murder for personal gain, it is more than refreshing to find an honest man.

Were Diogenes alive, he would be able to end his search at a certain gasoline filling station at Beetown, Wis., with the light from his lantern shining in the fact [sic] of Erskine L. Auel.

The honesty of Mr. Auel was demonstrated in connection with a purchase of gasoline made by Weldell V. PHILLIPS, of Milwaukee, to whom goes the credit for finding what Diogenes long ago sought.

Mr. Phillips ordered 10 gallons of gasoline. After the fuel had been put in his car he paid for 10 gallons of gasoline and resumed his journey. Sometime later, he received a letter postmarked, Beetown. It was from the filling station proprietor. In it was 59 cents in stamps, and a note explaining this was a refund on the gasoline purchased by Mr. Phillips. "I charged you for 10 gallons," the note siad, "but you only got seven, which I discovered after you had gone."

Investigation by the M ilwaukee man revealed that the gasoline dealer, who knew only that his customer was from Milwaukee and drove a certain make and color of car, had spent several dollars in telephone calls and otherwise in learning his name and address in order to refund the 59 cents.

Mr. Auel seems to be not only an honest man but a man naturally endowed with some of the qualifications that go to make a good detective.
OATES & DAVIS FAMILY of PLATTEVILLE circa 1870's?

Hi There!

This will seem sorta dis-jointed....but bear with it....

I'm trying to locate information on Elizabeth Grace Davis, born in Platteville,June 17,1855.

Her parents were:John Davis & Mary Ann Cox of Cornwall,England. ( They immigrated to....Wisconsin? ). John was a copper miner, and at some point the family moved to Rockland,Ontonagon,Michigan.( Where they appear in the 1880 Census.)

Elizabeth married William Oates (mispelled "Oats" sometimes),in Ontonagon,Michigan in 1873.

Here's the tricky part....neither appear in Michigan in the 1870 Census,so they must be in Wisconsin.

William was also a miner,born in 1849 in Cornwall,England.
I don't know if he immigrated solo,or with parents.

Any clues would be helpful.

Thanks!

~Michael A.Bryant

P.S.

I know about them from 1880 onward.( Wound up in Gilpin & Teller Counties,Colorado )

I am looking for information from descendants of the Hilgers or Kurt/Cuert families who lived in Grant County, WI. My ancestor Michael Hilgers b. Dusseldorf, Germany, abt 1803, married Gertrude Louese in the late 1820's. Michael died in Germany and Gertrude brought their 5 sons to an uncle's in Potosi, WI, abt 1850. The sons were: Michael, John, Charles, Theodore, and William. Charles and Theodore both served in the Union Army in the Civil War. Charles was wounded twice and Theodore was killed. After being mustered out, Charles married Margrete Kurt/Cuert in Potosi, WI July 7, 1864. Margrete was born April 17, 1846, Khelm, Germany, and came to the USA abt. 1851 with her parents who settled in Potosi, WI. In 1878, Charles, Margrete and his mother, Gertrude, moved to Rooks County, Kansas, where he homesteaded. I know the Hilgers family was Catholic.

Albert E. KIDD killed in accident near Cassville 1872; wife Glendora sues saloons

GRANT COUNTY.

Mr. Albert E. KIDD, of Glen Haven, was killed, on Sunday last, by being thrown from a wagon.

Source: Milwaukee Weekly Sentinel (Milwaukee, WI) Tuesday, June 25, 1872; Issue 26; col A

====

The widow of Mr. KIDD, who was fatally injured near Cassville, Grant county, on the 6th of June, is about to commence a [illegible] against the saloon keepers of Cassville. It is stated that KIDD was under the influence of liquor at the time of the accident. The damages are laid at $5,000.

Source: Milwaukee Sentinel, (Milwaukee, WI) Thursday, July 11, 1872; Issue 162; col D
====

An Important Decision Under the Liquor Law.

In August last, one Glendora A. KIDD, of Grant county, commenced a suit in the Circuit Court of Grant county against Nichols KEIPPEL, and his two bondsmen, to recover the penalty of his bond ($2,000), given under the liquor law of last winter.

It appears that her husband, a resident of the town of Glen Haven, on the 16th of June last, drove to the town of Cassville, and obtained some beer at the saloon of the defendant, KEIPPEL. Driving home towards night, and having a pair of young, spirited horses, while trying to pass another team on the road, his wagon ran against a stump. His horses then became frightened and ran way. KIDD fell from his wagon, and while trying to stop his horses, was dragged along for some distance, suffering severe injuries, in consequence whereof he afterward died. His wife brought the suit to recover from the saloon-keeper and his bondsmen $2,000. KEIPPEL being a member of the Protective Association, was defended by the Hon. F. W. COTZHAUSN, of Milwaukee, who interposed a demurrer to the complaint, on the gorunds:

1st, That the bond was defective, and not according to law.

2d, That no suit at the instance of a particular individual, could be maintained upon the bond for the penalty thereof, but that all such suits had to be instituted in the name of the State, the bond being intended as security to the commonwealth, for the benefit of any and all persons who might become injured during the life of the license, and which therefore could not be exhausted at the suit of a particular individual.

The demurrer was sustained by his honor Judge MILLS, on both grounds, and the suit dismissed.

It appears from the decision of Judge MILLS that private individuals cannot sue on these liquor bonds, which are given to the State. If suit is brought it must be by the State, as our general government prosecuted the Alabama claims. If any sums of money are receovered in such prosecutions, the amount will, of course, go into the State treasury, and an appropriation by the legislature will be necessary before party or parties for whose benefit the suit was bought, can handle the balm which this bungling piece of legislation attempts to apply to their bruised affections or bodies.

If this be accepted as the law, as we suppose it will be, "Graham's Liquor Law" becomes a dead letter on the statute book, and it will undoubtedly be repealed by the next legislature.

Source: The Wisconsin State Register (Portage, WI) Saturday, November 23, 1872; Issue 38; col A

I am looking into a Nimberger family that adopted two orphan girls in the late 1880s or early 1890s, then died leaving the girls orphaned again. The girls took the names Barbara and Prudence Nimberger. There is a marriage record for Prudence for 1904 that I hope to get to see if the parents are listed but wonder if anyone has any information on the Nimbergers in the meantime.

In 1900 the girls (born July 1882) were in Lima. In 1904 Prudence married Henry Chase and in about 1906 Barbara married Hal Hardin, probably in Iowa.

Thanks,

Andrea

SCHILDGEN surname; roots in Grant Co., WI; Help!

I recently received an old,type-written, and modest "Family Tree" that was written up by a "Ray Schildgen, Great-Grandson of W.J. Winney."

I received it -- by snailmail--from an elderly lady and new-found relative whom I had written re the Winney Family. I have written her back asking *who* this "Ray Schildgen" person is-- but others have also written this lady for family information and she has not written them back. I feel very fortunate that she was able to write me back but I don't know if she will continue. And she does not have email.

Does anyone know of how the Schildgen family is connected to the Winney family of Grant Co., WI?

None of W.J. Winney's daughters married a "Schildgen," at least for a first marriage. I don't know beyond that except for my own line which stems from William James and Ann Eliza (Blessing) Winney's first born child, William Henry Winney (1847WI - 1907IA) . W.H. Winney would move from WI to IA to SD to NE and back to Iowa to be buried in 1907.

The 14 children that W.J. (1820NY - 1881WI) & Ann Eliza (1826VA - 1909WI) Winney would have moved all around, many of them settling in Anaheim, CA in the beginnings of the 1900's but also in San Francisco (Ann Eliza delighted in describing to her Grandchildren the San Francisco Earthquake which she witnessed firsthand), Oregon, Texas, and Oklahoma.

I found a few "Schildgens" from Beetown, Grant Co., WI in www.familysearch.com but I have no way of knowing if they are connected to this "Ray Schildgen" person.

Thanks for any help!
(Do we have any "Schildgen's" on the List???)

Kathleen
LPurch6636@aol.com
Nelson Crow/Eliza Lane/Cornelius Horn

I am searching for information regarding the marriage and subsequent divorce of Nelson V. Crow and Eliza Lane (aka Nancy Lane). The marriage would have taken place about 1843, probably in Grant County, WI. Nelson and Eliza had four sons, Sylvester (Jim) b. 1844 in Boscobel; George Hiram b. May 10, 1846 in Boscobel; Wesley John, b. 1848; and Nelson Manley b. May 13, 1850 in Mt. Oak. Nelson & Eliza were apparently divorced sometime in the early 1850’s.
Where would I search for information about their divorce?

Nelson Crow was married again to Eliza’s sister Amanda Lane on June 19, 1855 in Elba Township, Winona Co, MN. Eliza Lane was married again to Cornelius Horn, reportedly on Feb. 21, 1858 in Fenimore, Grant Co. I would also appreciate any information that is available to verify this marriage. Thanks in advance for help that anyone is able to provide.

Judy Lynch

Frank ‘Floyd’ E. Palmer was born January 8, 1891 in Grant County, Wisconsin; his father was born in Ohio. He was adopted by Sarah and Edward Palmer of Tomah, Monroe County, Wisconsin probably before both Edward and his natural son Orson died in the early 1890's; Sarah would have been 52 years and Edward would have been 57 when they adopted Floyd, if they adopted him at birth. In 1910 Census he was age 19 years and an insurance agent as was his mother Sarah Palmer. At age 26, in 1918 he was drafted in to World War I; his occupation was listed as laborer at Moline Plow Company in Stoughton, which is south of Madison.
Any help with Floyd and his family would be appreciated.
lindajcox3@hotmail.com

Buttermilk Used to Save Wisconsin Town from Threatening Fire Fennimore, Wis., Dec. 3
1909 Dec 4, The Duluth News Tribune, p2

BUTTERMILK USED TO SAVE WISCONSIN TOWN FROM THREATENING FIRE

FENNIMORE, Wis., Dec. 3. -- A plentiful supply of buttermilk alone saved the little town of Patchgrove from destruction by fire when the plant of the A.F. HABBERMAN Creamery company was destroyed.

When the five hundred people of the town realized that the creamery could not be saved they set all efforts on savin the home of Wesley GARLACH, adjoining.

A bucket brigade was formed and with 500 buckets of buttermilk, secured from the creamery, the GARLACH home was saved. Had the fire communicated to the GARLACH residence it is probable that the rest of the town would have gone.
[Wisconsin; Bob Turner; Grant County; Albert; Lancaster; Olney Neeley; Ellenboro] (News Article)
Date: 1874-01-24; Paper: Pomeroy's Democrat

WISCONSIN has a fiendish horror in the person of Bob TURNER, a miner of Grant County. A short time ago he was arrested for the murder of his brother, Albert, whom he killed with an axe as he was coming out of a mineral hold in which he had been at work. Since his arrest and imprisonment at Lancaster, he gloates [sic] over his work and confesses to the murder of a number of persons who, within a few years, have mysteriously disappeared. Among them was Olney NEELEY, a youth of Ellenboro', whose body was found where TURNER had hidden it, after cutting the head nearly from the body with an axe. TURNER counts up nearly forty persons murdered by him in Wisconsin within twelve years.
We made a trip to a family village so far back woods that there was no road, but paths between rice fields, and not one vehicle of any kind except wheelbarrows. I was the only non-Chinese in the party, and no foreigner had been there before. The people gathered by the hundreds to see our procession. The student and I rode horseback, and the villagers couldn't get enough of seeing me make the animal gallop. I think nothing so fast ever happened before in that place. There was much feasting, guns of welcome and firecrackers, and the people were unbelieveably kind to me."
Albert Radl came to America in 1912 (to her sisters in Kansas City Maria Schuameier Geier) along with Rose Schuameier and her Mother Teres Shaumeier Rose and Albert were married and listed there in the 1920 Census. A family tale was Mary was smuggled from the Black forest and brought to America. However I have found her on a ship manifest with her Father Johan Schuameier. I have found Albert Radl was born 5 Nov 1885 and died Aug 1970 in Kansas City but I don't know if they had children or not. I don't know when Rose died. I know she was still living in 1944 because she was listed in her sister Maria's obit. Any info on this family would be helpful.
Chris - Christian Friedrick Allinger 1829-1916

[] Enumerated in Grant County, Wisconsin in 1850, Christiaa Allinger struck out on his own in 1851. Family lore says he traveled to the Caribbean Ocean, crossed the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific and sailed north to San Francisco Bay and California.
[] In 1871 Chris and his family traveled by railroad back to Wisconsin to visit his birth family, and it was there that Chris and Sarah Allinger added William to their children born in California: Daniel, U.S. Grant, Christine, and George Winfred.
[] Chris' parents were Abahart (Eberhard) and Lizzie (Elizabeth Catharina Fährlen) who lived the Potosi [186o Census]. Thier children were Christian, Katharine (Marr: Heinze), Christine (Marr: Dilger), Jake (Marr: Eliza Fourre), and Sara Allinger (Marr: Scheppele).
[] Would appreciate any information on the deaths and burials of the parents Abahart and Lizzie.
---John Allinger
W.H. Winney (1845 - 1908), Grant Co., WI: Anyone have a Photo???

There has been a lot of research done on this family but I just can't seem to find a photograph of my GGGrandfather, W.H. Winney who lived most of his life in Grant Co., Wisconsin. He died in Nebraska and is buried in Sibley, Iowa.

W.H. stands for "William Henry."

Does anyone have a photo of him? Or do you have a possible source where I can find a photo of him? He was in South Dakota in the 1900 Census. His wife was the widow Mary L. Hickock who outlived him. Their children were 1.) William Benjamin Winney, b. 1875 and 2.) Lyle D. Winney (Called "Dale"?), b. 1880. Mary was a widow who brought with her to the marriage a daughter, Cora Stipkens, b. 1872. W.H. Winney also had been a widower, bringing to the marriage my GGGrandmother, Anna Elizabeth Winney, b. 1870.

Anybody have a photograph of W.H. Winney or his family?

Many thanks,
Kathleen
