Frederick J. Jansky (1929 - 2008)

Jacobs Funeral Home and Cremation Services

Obituary: Frederick J. Jansky
Frederick J. Jansky
February 23, 1929 - July 11, 2008

Frederick J. Jansky, 79, of Florence, Wis., passed away peacefully Friday, July 11, 2008, at Golden Living Center in Florence after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Frederick was born on February 23, 1929, in Manitowoc, Wis., the son of Victor and Amelia (Jachimstal) Jansky. He was raised in Manitowoc and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1947.

In 1947, he started working for the Wisconsin Bell Telephone Company installing telephone poles and lines. A short time later he joined the US Navy. During his four year enlistment he served as an Electrician’s Mate on two different submarines, the USS Pickerel (SS-524) and the K-3. The Pickerel was stationed off the coast of Korea and Russia and was one of only two that received Combat Action Ribbons during the Korean War. While aboard the Pickerel, Fred spent 21 days (14 March to 3 April 1950) submerged on a trip from Hong Kong to Honolulu, Hawaii. At the time this set a record distance (5,200 miles) for submerged snorkeling by a submarine. In addition, on his birthday in 1950, from a depth of 250 feet and a speed of 18 knots, the Pickerel surfaced at a 72 degree angle. This high angle maneuver was very unusual and dangerous and is likely a record. As a Korean War Veteran, he became a life member of the Sheboygan Memorial VFW Post 9156.

On December 15, 1951, he was united in marriage to Caroline Mae Cherney at Vallejo, Calif. They resided in California and Hawaii before settling in Sheboygan Falls, Wis. in 1952. He later designed and built a new home there in 1962. In 1969, he and his family moved to a home on Lake Michigan on the far south side of Sheboygan.

Fred worked for Wisconsin Bell Telephone as a telephone and PBX installer and repairman until his retirement at the age of 55 in 1984. He served as a Boy Scout Master in Sheboygan Falls when his sons were in scouts and for several years was treasurer of his local union, the Communication Workers of America. Over the years Fred was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sheboygan Falls, St. Peter Claver Catholic Church in Sheboygan, Grace Lutheran Church in Powers, and St. John’s Lutheran Church in Florence. He always enjoyed boating, fishing and camping and spent many hours fishing on Lake Michigan on his boat, the Carol Mae.

Fred had also camped, fished and hunted in the Florence area since he was 16 years old and later spent vacation time there with his wife and family for many years. After Caroline’s death on February 23, 1992, in Sheboygan, Fred followed one of his dreams and moved to Florence where he lived on Loon Lake.

On June 19, 1993, he was united in marriage to Audrey (Bruce) LeBoeuf in Hyde, Mich. Fred enjoyed traveling and spent many winters at Winter Haven Resort in Brownsville, Texas, where he made new friends and learned to play the accordion again, something he learned as a youngster. In addition, he also became interested and talented in fish taxidermy and digital photography. Fred felt blessed that he was able to accomplish everything that he hoped for during his lifetime.

Frederick is survived by his wife Audrey; one daughter, Deette (Neil) Hildebrand, Sheboygan; four sons, Leroy (Patricia), Chippewa Falls, Wis., Gordon (Linda), Pensacola, Fla., Kenneth (Patricia), Eau Claire, Wis., James, West Bend, Wis.; one step- daughter-in-law, Kathy LeBoeuf, Powers, Mich.; twelve grandchildren, Jacob and Kayla Hildebrand, Sheboygan, Jonathan and Joel Jansky, Eau Claire, Matthew, Jeremy and Timothy Jansky, Florida, Amelia and Breanna Jansky, Eau Claire, Jordin, Jenna and Joshua Jansky, West Bend, four step-grandchildren, Paula Stingle, Little Chute, Wis., Sara Gorzinski, Powers, Amanda LeBoeuf, Escanaba, Mich., Steven LeBoeuf, Powers; his brother, Allen (Laverne) Jansky, Manitowoc, Wis.; sister Jean Bruemmer, Phoenix, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Doras Behnke, Manitowoc; two great-grandchildren, Noah and Jasmine Jansky; five step-great-grandchildren, Shawn Paul LeBoeuf, Noah, Ian and Elijah Gorzinski and Aydian Stingle; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Amelia; first wife, Caroline; brother Robert Jansky; step-son, Paul LeBoeuf; and granddaughter, Taylor Renee Jansky.

Friends may leave condolences and tributes to Frederick’s family online at www.jacobsfuneralhomes.com

The Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home, Florence, is serving the family.

Funeral Information
Visitation will be Tuesday, July 15, 2008, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home, Florence, and Wednesday, from 10:00 AM to11:00 AM at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Florence.
Darwin David Sternhagen (1921 - 2005)

Jacobs Funeral Home and Cremation Services

Obituary: Darwin David Sternhagen

Darwin David Sternhagen
November 12 1921 - March 26 2005

Florence:
Darwin David Sternhagen 11/12/21-3/26/05

Darwin David Sternhagen was born November 12th, 1921, to Carl Sternhagen and Mary Sternhagen nee Taff in the house that was his residence until his death. Darwin was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Florence, Wisconsin. He went to Fern Elementary School and Florence High School. After a brief bout with tuberculosis, Darwin graduated from Florence High School. He continued to work on the family dairy farm and eventually bought the farm from his father. He fell in love with Florence Hedmark of Fence and they were married May 20, 1946 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. They began filling Fern with little Sternhagens: Duane the thinker, David the handsome, Dan the smart, Bonnie the girl, Jeff the charming.

Darwin, in order to keep farming, held many jobs over the years. He was a logger, a town clerk, a snow plower, and a school bus driver. After going out of dairy farming, he began raising pumpkins for his Pumpkin Farm. He took a job as a janitor for Florence Co. Schools. After retirement he enjoyed touring the country in his RV.

During his life, he enjoyed many things: farming, cows, flowers, pumpkins, putting up wood, Purple Martins, and Macintosh apples. But his greatest love was his Lord Jesus. He showed that love by the way he treated people, his work in the church, teaching Sunday School, being the church's financial secretary, serving on church council, his daily devotions and faithful church attendance.

Toward the end of his life, Darwin struggled with injuries and illnesses. His logging accident crippled his body. Cancer challenged him for years. Finally after a series of setbacks, the Lord called him home on Easter weekend, 2005 at the age of 83 years, 3 months and 14 days.

Darwin lived his life trusting in Jesus Christ for forgiveness and salvation. His Savior gave him the strength and confidence he needed for life. He died in the arms of his Savior, washed in His blood. The Lord has had mercy on his soul.

Darwin Sternhagen was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Florence, his brothers, William Sternhagen and John Sternhagen. He is survived by his sister, Caroline Nieman and her husband Rudy, his children, Duane, David and his wife Carol, Dan and his wife JoAnne, Bonnie and her husband James, Jeff and his wife Rosie, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, friends and relatives.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 7, from 4 - 7p.m. at the Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home in Florence and Friday April 8, from 10 - 11a.m. at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Florence. Funeral services will be Friday, at 11:00a.m. at the Church in Florence. Rev. Andrew Schwartz will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Friends may leave condolences and tributes to Darwin's family online at www.jacobsfuneralhomes.com

The Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home of Florence is serving the family.
