Hi Dorthy, I was reading some old posts on the labine surname and found this one. My fathers name was Fred, we lived across the road from uncle Ernest, and between Art and Ed. I guess I'm younger than you, as aunt Margie and elenore were no longer teaching when I went to school. Aunt Elenore did some substituting now and then, but not aunt Marge. Who are you related to in the tipler area?? Thanks, my e-mail address is blzerblu72@yahoo.com.

Thanks dkd185. Appreciate you taking the time to respond. Asa Jeffrey d Feb 26, 1885, so fits with the date of the purchase. Can only assume that the other plot was to be for his wife, Elizabeth Williams Jeffrey. I'm still looking for her burial place and date. Thanks again.

Hi Debbie: Can you tell me the location in the cemetery of Annie (Peterson) (Bjornberg) Carlson. Her maiden name was Peterson. She married Axel Bjornberg and after two children, Tippy and my grandmother, Axel died and she remarried to Gust Carlson. I know you helped Muriel locate Axel's grave, she put a stone on it. If I remember right, she said there were two graves, Axel and their first child were in one and Annie and Gus are in the other. Tippy was taking care of grandpa Gus when he died and I believe Tippy had him buried with Annie and two of their children who died at a young age. Tippy and Eva are buried in the Catholic half of the cemetery, but I'm sure that Gus and Annie would not have been. They would be in the Commonwealth half of the cemetery. Can you help me with the location of the grave of Gus and Annie?

Gene

Hi, I am the sexton of the Commonwealth Cemetery. I have not record of Mike Gallella buried at our cemetery in the Township of Commonwealth, Florence Co. Wisconsin. However, St. Mary's Cemetary is directly above ours and in the early days obits often referred to it as the Commonwealth Cemetery seeing as they are adjacent. Contact St. Mary's Church, Florence to confirm. Debbie

Re: Ray Nitschke (d. 1998)

State, The (Columbia, SC) - March 9, 1998
Deceased Name: NITSCHKE DIES OF HEART ATTACK
Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Nitschke, whose fierce play epitomized the champion Green Bay Packers of the Vince Lombardi era, died Sunday. He was 61.

He died in Florida of a massive heart attack, the Packers said.

Nitschke's daughter, Amy Klaas, said she and her 17-month-old daughter, Jacqueline, had been visiting with her father at his winter home in Naples, Fla., and they were driving to a friend's house when her father felt chest pains.

They stopped at a service station in Venice, Fla., and she went in for water and a soft drink. When she returned, he had been stricken.

"A man at the gas station helped me get him out of the car and I started CPR," she said, adding that a "wonderful lady" then came and relieved her. Her father was taken to Venice Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:30 p.m.

Nitschke, a third-round draft pick of the Packers out of Illinois, played for the Packers from 1958 to 1972, and was the defensive anchor on the Lombardi teams that won five NFL titles, including the first two Super Bowls. He was a member of the NFL's 75th anniversary all-time team.

Nitschke and Dick Butkus were the standard for the punishing middle linebacker of the '60s and '70s.

"He was one of the great players, not only in Packer history, but in NFL history," Packers spokesman Lee Remmel said.

In a recent poll, he was voted the fourth-best player in the team's history, behind receiver Don Hutson, current quarterback Brett Favre, and Bart Starr, the quarterback on Lombardi's teams.

Nitschke, who made his home in Green Bay after his retirement, was often at Packers practices and traveled to road games. He would chat with whomever approached him - a man whose private demeanor was in stark contrast to his fierce on-field persona.

"The last time I saw him, he was critiquing the entire Super Bowl to me. It comes as a shock," said Packers offensive lineman Adam Timmerman.

"He was loved by thousands and thousands of Packers fans, because he always had time for them," said Remmel, who covered the Lombardi teams as a reporter and has been with the team since 1974.

"I remember sitting in the hotel lobbies when we were on the road and he obligingly posed for many photos and signed hundreds of autographs."

That persona had its effect on the current Packers, Super Bowl champions for the 1996 season and NFC champions in 1997.

"What people don't understand outside Green Bay is that here we have to exorcise those ghosts - Willie Wood, Willie Davis, Bart Starr, Ray Nitschke," defensive end Sean Jones said as the Packers were making the run to the Super Bowl in 1996.

"I think Ray Nitschke thinks we stink."

Not so, Nitschke said, but the image lingered - tough, unyielding, proud.

On the field, Nitschke was a destroyer.

"He was a thunderous tackler," Remmel said. "He didn't know the meaning of taking it easy on the football field. He did that every play of his career.

"He was intense about his profession, about as intense as any performer in the history of the game. He was a very devoted father to his three children off the field."

Nitschke's daughter, who lives in Spread Eagle, Wis., said her father should be remembered for his humanity as much as his football ability.

"He was a wonderful human being. He was like the epitome of what a football player should be," she said. "He thought of it as an honor for somebody to ask him for an autograph. He thought that was a privilege. He took time for anybody."

The death was the second in the past month involving a former member of the Packers' championship teams of the 1960s. Former defensive end Lionel Aldridge was found dead of natural causes in his suburban Milwaukee apartment Feb. 12, two days shy of his 57th birthday.

Nistchke's wife, Jackie, died of cancer in 1996.

Ray Nitschke (d. 1998)

San Antonio Express-News (TX) - March 10, 1998
Deceased Name: Ray Nitschke: Just softie at heart

Packer great remembered for kindness as much as toughness
MILWAUKEE - Football great Ray Nitschke left some big cleats to fill, and those who knew him wondered Monday who could replace a man whose off-field kindness rivaled his bone-crushing, on- field fierceness.

Nitschke, a defensive star for Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers, died of a heart attack Sunday in Venice, Fla., near his winter home. He played for the Packers from 1958 to 1972.

"The fans will always remember the glory years, the Lombardi years," said Mark Kanz, tourism director for the Green Bay Area Visitor and Convention Bureau, which used Nitschke for promotions. "Ray was kind of a modern- day connection to that, living in the Green Bay area. And now we've kind of lost that connection."

The bald-headed Nitschke, whose granite-like features typified the tough play that made him one of the NFL's greatest linebackers, still had a home west of Green Bay.

Packers fans, who have watched a parade of players leave the league's smallest city for fatter paychecks since a 31-24 Super Bowl loss to Denver, loved Nitschke. He was a living, breathing advertisement for the Packers, Green Bay and Wisconsin.

"In these days of free agency, when players are jumping ship at a moments notice, we'll never have another one like him," Kanz said.

Green Bay is where he met his wife and raised a family, and it's where his fame grew. He wanted to pay the fans back for the glory years, when the Packers won five NFL titles under Lombardi, said family friend Basil Koumbis.

"He's listed in the Green Bay phone book, and when fans come to town they look him up. And to tell you the truth, he would actually go out and have a beer with them if he wasn't busy," Kanz added.

Family and friends say Nitschke promoted the YMCA, worked for a cerebral palsy telethon and raised money for the Jackie Nitschke Center, an alcohol-treatment facility named after his wife, who died of cancer in 1996.

Nitschke lent his face to many programs, including the Wisconsin Lottery. He dressed up as his mother for one lottery commercial.

He also did NFL promotions, including training camps where fans could hear from some of the game's legends. League spokesman Brian McCarthy said he remembers the Lombardi-like speeches Nitschke would give to doctors, lawyers and teachers who gathered around him at the camps.

"It's a tremendous loss to the National Football League, but also to fans across the country," McCarthy said. "He epitomized the game of football, and we were fortunate to be able to tap into his love for the game."

Nitschke never hesitated to sign autographs or pose for pictures, even hundreds at a time, said Don Walsh, state lottery director.

"I asked him one time, 'Ray, how do you do that? How do you spend so much time with every single person?' And the answer was that he owed his entire life and his career to the people of Wisconsin. And so he said he had to take the time," Walsh said.

Known as a lion on the field, Nitschke was a pussy cat elsewhere, said Judy Glenz, executive director of the Jackie Nitschke Center. Nitschke became emotional recalling his wife during a talk at the center last year, Glenz said.

"It was a huge loss for him. I'm not sure he ever got over the loss of her," Glenz said. "The one thing he said that touched me was, 'I know that Jackie's here today and that this means a lot.'"

Nitschke lost his mother and father as a boy, and that loss came out in the way he lived his life, his family said.

"Anytime we saw him, he needed a kiss and a hug," said Nitschke's daughter, Amy Klaas, 26, of Spread Eagle, Wis. "It was mandatory in our household."

Funeral services were scheduled for Saturday in Green Bay. Nitschke's family planned to have his body cremated.
