I am looking for Joseph Michels( I know it was changed to Mitchell but he also could have changed it back)b.1819 in Calenborn, Germany. He married Magdalena Bleser and came to the US in 1868 with his children..Catherina, Johannes, Peter (settled in Raymond, Racine Cty. Wis.), Anna Maria, Marie Catherine(I believe she married John Wangerin), and another Catherina ?.I can only assume that Magdalena had died by then. I believe that Joseph's parents were Peter Michels and Catharina Phillipsen and that he had a brother Nicolas b. 1823. In the 1880 census, there is a Joseph Mitchell living in Washington, Eau Claire. Living with him is John b. 1854-55 in Prussia which matches the info I have for Johannes. However, Joseph's wife is listed as Sophia and there are 6 other children..is this a second wife who was a widow with children or is this the wrong Joseph????? Does anyone know anything about this family? I am searching for a needle in a haystack as he seems to disappear from the Franklin, Milwuakee County area sometime after 1870. In both the 1860 and 1870 I find him but none of his children.

(He) worked first in the woods, in the sawmills, etc. He then learned the photography trade from old Burns and took over that business in 1895. And there you will find him almost every day yet.
Ellis Junction

I understand that Ellis Junction became the town of Crivitz in 1897. In 1927 Crivitz was dissolved and became part of the town of Stephenson. In 1974 the Village of Crivitz was incorporated again....Can anyone tell me if it is still considered Crivitz?

My great-grandfather, Frank Turner (son of Lars & Johanna Turner) listed Ellis Junction, WI as his residence on his marriage record on April 16,1897. The marriage took place in Marinette, WI.

In 1893 I believe he "may have been" a teamster in Eau Claire, WI as I found a "Frank Turner" in the Eau Claire directory on Ancestry.com

I know in later years he lived in various towns in Michigan (Stephenson, Hermansville, Norway and Escanaba). He was first married to Augusta Lind (1897). After Augusta's death he married her sister, Ida Lind (between 1902-1904). Frank died on 10/3/1918 in Escanaba.

Older family members tell me that he supposedly owned a livery stable in Escanaba at one time which would tie in with the possibility of being a teamster. His obituary states that he was a watchman at the time of his death.

I am looking for any information that may be available regarding Frank Turner. I'd love to hear from anyone with any possible leads. Thanks!

Erica Hearne
EricaHearne@hotmail.com

Francis/Julia Sophie Knott MYSTERY Help Needed

This is my great aunt and her husband, they were married in EauClaire on Sept. 22 1899 according to the Bride & Groom Index, I show a 1900 Eau CLire Census where they have a son name Llewlelyn who is 4 1/2 years old. In what little info the family has on this group it states the the son dies in his early to mid teens- (14 to 16). There is an obit from the ECL dated Aug 2, 1912 that I need to get a copy of to see if this is him...I do not know where he is buried, I am really hoping the obit will tell me... Julia Sophie is suppose to be at Lake View but have no info to support this. The whereabouts of "Frank" (Francis) Knott after 1900 is unknown...A real mystery that I need to try to uncover...ANY HELP greatly appreciated as once again, I am 1200 miles away! William had to be born about Nov 1868. I also need to see if an obit can be found for Pauline Heimann she is in St John's Lutheran Cemetery...sorry do not know dates... Looking for any connections to Hanna or Herman as parents and siblings for both are unknown. The 1895 MN Territorial census puts them in Lake Crystal, Blue Earth, MN at the time of the census.

From the newspaper Reform, Eau Claire, 24 June 1919 (trans.): A. H. Hollen, the well known clothing dealer here in the city, died Thursday afternoon at Luther hospital. According to the daily paper, he suffered a heart attack and was brought to the hospital a while ago. His death was the result of a new attack. Andrew H. Holen was born in Hedalen, Gudbrandsdalen, in Norway in 1854. His Norwegian name was Einar Hollen. He came to America with his parents in 1862 and the family first lived in La Crosse. At 19 years old he came to Eau Claire where he was a salesman in a clothing store and in 1877 he started his own business. In the old days Hollen was one of the leaders among the Norwegians in Eau Claire and known by all. In later years he wasn't as active. He was a very intelligent man and knew the art of dealing with people of all classes. He leaves three sons and two daughters,--Dr. Henry Hollen in Los Angeles, lawyer Richard Hollen in Chicago and the son Stanley, who was previously in military service in WW I. The two daughters, Cora and Alma live at home. It is anticipated that the son Stanley will take over his father's business, since he has for many years had a leading position in a large clothing firm in Chicago and therefore is acquainted with the business. The funeral took place Saturday and was private. (The poster is not related).

From the Eau Claire Leader, 8 Nov 1944: "John Ovren, 61, printer, and a resident of Eau Claire the past quarter of a century, died at Durand where he had been working at his trade. Surviving are his widow, two sons, Oswald B. Overn, of this city and Roald Ovren of Elk Mound. John Ovren was born in Faaberg, Gudbrandsdalen, Norway, in 1883, and learned the printers trade at Lillehammer. He came to America in 1905, settling at Stoughton, Wis., where he worked at the Mandt Wagon Works. Later he was employed as a printer on the Norwegian paper "Decorah Posten" at Decorah, Iowa. In 1918 he came to Eau Claire, and from that time up to 1931 he was employed as a printer on the Reform, published and edited by the late Waldemar Ager. More recently he was working as a printer at Durand. In 1929 he went back to Norway for a visit, and gave a series of lectures there, and on his return to America he delivered a number of lectures on his observations in the old country, and some of its history as it particularly interested Norwegians in this country who had been born in Norway. In the earlier years of his life Mr. Ovren was active in several organizations for people of Norwegian birth or descent, such as the Sons of Norway and Scandinavian American Fraternity lodges at Madison and Eau Claire, the organization known as "Gudbrandsdalslaget" for people from that part of Norway of which for some years he was an officer in the national organization. Mr. Ovren was also a writer and translater, and had translated some books from English to Norwegian. He was also the author of a book of Norwegian poems published some years ago." From the Eau Claire Leader, 9 Nov 1944: "Funeral services for John Ovren, who died Tuesday at Durand, will be held today at 2 p.m. from Lenmark's, the Rev. M. T.Jenson officiating. Interment will be in the North side cemetery." (the poster is not related)

Paul Branstad

From the Eau Claire Leader, 24 April 1923, page 5: Paul Branstad, for many years member of the Eau Claire police force, died Sunday at a local hospital at the age of 81. He had been ill for some years. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 from Lenmark's, Rev. N.C.A. Garness officiating. Interment will be made in the North Side cemetery. The surviving relatives are two sons, A. J. Branstad, the well known local druggist and Richard Branstad of Denver, Colo., and two daughters, Emma Branstad of this city and Josephine Branstad of Minneapolis. Paul Branstad was one of Eau Claire's most respected citizens and had been a resident of Eau Claire for many years. He was born in Norway and came to this city in the late sixties. He came to Eau Claire and for some time worked for the Eau Claire Lumber Co. Later he engaged in the hotel business, operating the Wisconsin House, corner Hobart and Wisconsin streets. Then he embarked in the furniture and undertaking business on the North side but he was flooded out in the famous flood of 1884 and lost eveything. For a time he was undersheriff and jailer at the county jail and later became a member of the local police force, and it is as a policeman that he is remembered by the present generation. He served faithfully on the force for close to twenty years, retiring a few years ago. In his prime Paul Branstad was reputed to be the most powerful man physically who ever came to Eau Claire and many of the oldtimers now tell of some of the feats of strength which he performed. He was a big hearted man, kindly and yet fearless, for in the early days on the police force a man had to have a great deal of courage to cope with the situations arising. (the poster is not related, he came from Nodre Fron, Gudbrandsdal, Norway)

Kari Jacobsdatter Aas

From the reform newspaper, Eau Claire, 25 June 1912 (trans.): Mrs Kari Aas on Hobart St. died Thursday evening after a few years having been sickly. She was born in Vaage Gudbrandsdalen 9 March 1835 and was therefore over 77 years old. Her maiden name was Kari Jacobsdatter Kviten. After her confirmation she went to Rennebu south of Trondhjem where, at 26 years old, she was married. Her spouse died, however, within 6 months and she was a widow for 12 years and then was married to Erik Aas who now survives her. In 1873 she came with her husband along with a son from the first marriage to America and settled here in the city where the family has lived since. Mrs Kari Aas was one of the temperance society's oldest members--a very kind, self-sacrificing, pesonable woman who was admired my all. Her life had not been easy, since the son had been sickly and not able to work. Courageously she strove through many years. She always kept it clean and tidy and she, good-hearted as she was, always participated when ther was a speech to give. Few have fought so faithfully or courageously for her home than her. But eventually came the time when her strength weakened, as strong as she had been. The funeral took place Saturday with many people present. There was a multitude of flowers and both the temepeance society and the women's temperance society sent wreaths. She leaves her spouse, who is now 84 years old, together with the son Esten. She died of a heart ailment.
(the poster is not related)

Ole Ness

From the newspaper "Arbeideren", Eau Claire, 25 May 1888 (trans.): Ole Næss' Unexpected Passing--Thursday evening the 20th. the following sad occurence happened, that Ole Ness, one of Eau Claire's oldest and most respected residents committed suicide by cutting his throat at his home on Lake Street in West Eau Claire. Ole Ness was born on the farm Næsset in Folddalen, Norway in the year 1841 and so was also now 45 years old. He attended for two years, '64 and '65, Tromsø Teachers College, where he graduated the last-named year. After some time working as a tutor for a priest in the country, he entered into a marriage with Marta Johannesdatter and immigrated shortly after with his young wife to America and settled in Eau Claire in 1869. Without having previously being educated as a carpenter, he began after arriving in Eau Claire to work in that profession and soon worked his way up to becoming one of the city's most clever craftsman. He worked at work shops for others and also for himself and was in charge of quite a few workers, among others, also the Westside Norwegian Church, of which he was in charge of building and oversaw all of the work both the inside and out. In time he began with two others a furniture company under the name "Norway Furniture Company". The others soon sold out to him, so he was the sole owner of the business. Soon after he bought an empty lot on Bridge Street, and built his own warehouse and operated a long-lasting business with much success. It was estimated that after a while he built it up to a worth of as least $10,000. His first wife died in 1875 and left two children. After a while he entered again in marriage with the girl Pernille Petterson. After a while she also died and left 2 small boys. The last time he entered into marriage in July 1882 with Miss. Sarah Gilbert, with whom he has no surviving children. When the "Eau Claire Tidning" ceased publication a year ago, he thought of putting out a little local publication of a sound Christian nature and set about with his usual energetic spirit the establishment of a stock company for this purpose of which he became president. The fruit of this endeavor is "Arbeideren". Along with his success as a businessman, it seems, none the less, that he was particularly suited as a mechanic, which, if he had had the necessary education, he would have been one of the most successsful at that profession. Already while he worked as a tutor in the old country, he manufactured, all on his own, a sewing machine of his own design, which after having been in use a long time in Norway, was brought here and was used here for many years in the household. And when "Arbeideren" was founded he invented, without having seen anything like that, a folding and mailing machine which has been put to great use. As a person, a citizen and a church member he was respected, honored and loved by all with whom he came in contact, and he assumed an outstanding role both as a businessman, citizen and church member. Right from 1860 (sic) he was a member of the local Norwegian Lutheran congregation and has had many positions of honor, and exhibited completely blameless and christianly behavior. With the great flood in 1884 it seemed that he would suddenly lose all that he owned, nonetheless the loss was not so great as it at first seemed, but it put him into finantial difficulties which followed his later business affairs, together with the persistent and tiring work, which thereby was combined, it seemed little by little to have undermined his health and then especially his nervous system and spiritual powers. Although he was so very calm and patient, nonetheless there must have been as the last days of his life neared a reason to believe that this blow should have fatal consequences for his sanity. Even his nearest suspected nothing of how near the climax was; nevertheless in an instant of insanity he ended his life as noted above. He sank under the weight of his burdens. Missed and mourned by a spouse, 4 children, relatives and a numerous flock of frineds of all nationalities. (The poster is not related. The "Arbeideren" later became the "Reform". It seems there must have been a previous Norwegian newspaper in Eau Claire, the "Eau Claire Tidning". Ole Ness is listed in The History of Northern Wisconsin, 1881, page 329. There his children are listed as Richard, Bernard, Julius and Martin.)

My grandmother turns 99 on August 17th.
I found just this last week what she has been searching for all of her adult life!

Her great grandmother used to tell the kids stories about how up her lineage, there were Plymouth Colony Puritan settlers and real Mayflower ancestors as well.

This loving great grandmother died when Emily was only 8 years old, and Emily's mother died only a month later.
All those wonderful stories dried up, and at age 8, who could retain all the names, dates and places?
But Emily never forgot...
As she grew up and tried to re-tell these stories she was called a liar. So she quietly keept looking for what she believed was the truth of what her gr grandmother had told her. She did not believe the stories were lies.

Just this last week I have discovered just how true they were...so I have this plan in my head.
Many are a part of this, but now I need someone local to help and FAST.

I have contacted the Society of Mayflower Descendants...and they are going to help move this right along so that in her lifetime, she will be a member of their society...

Her birthday is fast approaching however.
Only God in Heaven knows the number of her days left amoug us...so please do not delay.

I need the death record, obituary, with citation and burial record for one person...a lot to ask for...and please hear me, I can not even pay you for your time and efforts.

I blew the whole wad on her membership fee.
But I have an idea...

If you are capable, caring, willing, able, etc.
Please email me so I can tell you the name of this key link...can't do it without her data...she is the descendant that links it all together.

The only other item that would be acceptable would be if her obit mentions the name of the church, her church burial record from the minister who preformed the funeral ceremony...

ARE You my hands, legs and answer to prayer?
I live in Florida...no one that I know lives in Eau Claire.

Death was 27 July 1948 in Union.
This was an 80 year old woman named Emily Jane...maiden name Tilden, married name Sallander.
Nick name: Jennie or Emma (I have seen her as both)

I do not know the name of burial location or church attending at the time...or even who she was staying with.

Mary Ellen
MQuiltr2@aol.com

F. L. Tripp

I recently received a short article from the Wisconsin State Journal (ca. 1924?) that was about "F. L. Tripp," an Eau Claire resident and, apparently, a noted inventor. According to the article, Tripp was in the Eau Claire area as early as 1862 or 1863 and managed a womens wear shop. He is supposed to have invented "whalebone corsets, hatpins and other women's necessities."

I am wondering whether this is the same person as Freeman L. Tripp whose name has popped up in some research I am conducting. "My" Freeman L. Tripp was born in Maine in 1841, moved to Wisconsin with his family in the late 1850s, and lived, at various times in Pierce County, WI, Iowa, and Eau Claire. Freeman L. Tripp received at least one patent for a wagon brake while he was living in Prescott, Wisconsin in 1865. He eventually moved to Washington State where he died in 1934.

It seems too much of a coincidence to have two different F. L. Tripps, both inventors, inhabiting this part of the state at the same time, but the dates and places of residence don't match up (although the State Journal is a bit vague on these details). I find no Tripps at all in the 1860 or 1870 census enumerations for Eau Claire and only "my" Freeman Tripp in 1880 (but employed as a retail grocer?) I know that stranger things have happened, but I'd like to know if these are two different people or one in the same. Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Tim Ericson

From the newspaper Reform, Eau Claire, 23 Feb 1897 (trans.): One of Eau Claire's well-known Norwegians, Even Pedersen on the east side, died suddenly last Thursday night. He had been sickly for the last 3 weeks--it was heart problems that plagued him--and Thursday night about 11 o'clock he felt very bad, and less than one hour later he died. The deceased was 63 years old. He ran a furniture business for a time here in the city, but quit about a year ago and worked then at Cutters shoe factory. He also ran for some years a farm in Pigeon Falls. Left are a wife and six grown children, of whom all are married except a son who works here in the city. The funeral took place from the Synod church. Pastor Preus preached. The church was full of sympathetic friends and acquaintances. Buried by Pastor Preus the 21st of February, Even Pedersen, 63 years old. In the 2 March 1897 paper is this: Even Pederson, whose unexpected death we announced in the last number, was born in Brottum in Hedmarken the 9th. Sep 1833. He came here to America in 1868. He first settled in La Crosse and later in Pigeon Falls, from there he moved here to Eau Claire about 16 years ago. Also in this edition is a card of thanks signed by: Mrs. Sarah Pederson, born Christiansen, Mrs. Beate Matson, Mrs Clara Iversen, Mrs. Lena Olson, Mrs. Mayy ?Werta, Mrs. Jenny McMann and Charles Pederson.
Sophie Lenmark

From the newspaper Reform, Eau Claire, 5 Jan 1897 (trans.): Mrs. Sophie Lenmark, who died Thursday morning, had been sick for about 1 1/2 years of tuberculosis so her death was not unexpected. She was an especially loveable woman, as temperate as any, and her leaving will be regretted in many circles. She was at her death not fully 50 years old, in as much as she was born on Dammerud by Gans farm in Fet, Sogn, Norway, the 6th of May 1847. She came from Norway here to Eau Claire in 1869, where she was married 26 years ago to Christian Lenmark, currently president of the Eau Claire Furniture Company. They had 10 children from their marriage, of which 9 are living. Of these, five are grown. The deceased has a brother living in Norway and several relatives in Chicago. She has been a member of the United Church's congregation for 19 years and was, before her illness prevented her, the treasurer of the Woman's Organization. She died peacefully and well, and it is for those left behind the joyful knowledge that death for her was only beginning of the life. Her surviving husband and children have all our sympathy. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon from the Westside church with an especially great number of participants. Despite the unpleasant weather, the big church was full of a sympathetic flock of friends, who in this way sought to show the love they had for the deceased. The coffin was richly surrounded by flowers and among the wreathes were found quite a few from various businesses. President Hoyme spoke in English at the home and brought the deceased a final farewell. Pastor Tangjerd spoke in the church and officiated at the grave. The Congregation's choir sang, both at the home and the church. The deceased daughter Charlotte, now Mrs. Bruden from West Superior, is staying here in the city a while and was with her mother at the last. She will be here for several weeks.
(the poster is not related)

From the newspaper Reform, Eau Claire, 25 May 1909 (trans.): Mrs Carl Henrickson on Niagara street died the 18th of May after having been sick a long time of cancer. She was 60 years old and born in Skedsmo in Norway. She came here with her husband in 1881 and has since lived here in the city. She was a member of the Norwegian Methodist Church--and one of the most ardent. She was a much loved and good-natured little woman, who was never dispirited or discouraged. Towards the end when the pains were great, she took comfort in the thought that others had it worse. She was also a long time member of the temperance organization. The funeral took place Friday from the Methodist church. Pastor Sagen presided. There were so many people present since the church was full of sorrowing friends who had learned to love her. She leaves, besides a mourning spouse, three sons and three daughters. Quite a few of Henrickson's relatives from South Dakota, among them his brother, attended the funeral. (There is also a card of thanks signed by Carl Hendrickson and family. The poster is not related.)

From the newspaper Reform, Eau Claire, 8 Sep 1908 (trans.): Mrs. Gunerius Cypreansen died Wendsday afternoon at Luther Hospital. She was at her death 69 1/2 years old and had been sickly for a long time. Early this spring she was near death; but good care and comforting medical help kept death away for a while. This summer she had been at her son, Alfred Cypreansen's cottage by Lake Chetek. Mr. and Mrs. Cypreansen came here to the city in 1866 with very few cents in their pocket. They have since came up in life and may be considered well-off; but one could often hear Mrs. Cypreansen talk about the earlier hard times. And surely those times didn't seem to be unhappy; just the contrary, as her friendly brown eyes shone with courage when she talked about the poverty in the first year. And she was a good mother. She lived to see fine children in good positions but was spared to see them haughty and unhelpful with each other. And hardly ever have we known a mother like that who was able to keep her children's love and trust unfaltering until the last. A better honor can no mother attain. In church work she took a leading role for many years. When the young people's temperance organization "Excelsior" was at its best, the door always stood open at the Cypreansen's. And it is how we remember this mother, with a great thanksgiving. The funeral took place Saturday afternoon from the North Side Church with many participants. Mr. Sigvart Cypreansen who now lives in Kansas, came to the city just in time to see his mother before she died. (the poster isn't related)

Ralph and Pearl (Hineman) Bowen

I am looking for the death date and burial location of Pearl (Hineman) Bowen. She was born about Aug 1885 in Tomah, Monroe, WI and married Ralph W Bowen on 05 Nov 1905 in Monroe Co. I know for sure she lived in Augusta, Eau Claire in 1920 and 1930(census records).

Does anyone have access to the obituaries from the Eau Claire Daily Telegram? I know Ralph's obituary is in the 19 Feb 1957 pg. 12 edition. I am hoping it will say whether or not Pearl survived him.

Pearl was very active in the state Women's Republican committee. She also ran for Secretary of State. She was a Grand Adah in the Order of the Eastern Star for 1923-1924.

I have searched for Pearl's death date and burial location, but haven't been able to locate them. I suppose it is possible she remarried, but I haven't found a record for that either.

She and Ralph did not have any children to my knowledge. My grandfather, Nathan Hineman lived with them in 1920, according to the census. From what my mother knows, his mom died shortly after he was born. We don't know who his mom was or where his parents were married, but he was born in Wisconsin, according to the census records.

Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Cynthia

Anders Petter Johansson/A. Peter Johnson & Maja/Marie Gretta Johnson

Born 2 Jun 1849 in Sweden. Married Maja Gretta/Marie Pettersdotter 19 Feb 1873 Tun. Children Carl Gustaf b. 1873 d. 1961 in EauClaire & Selma Adolfina b. 1876 d. 1927 in MN. Maja Gretta immigrated 1881 as Marie Johnson with Carl G. 7 & Selma 4. Church records from Sweden say he left 1873,but Selma was born 1876. Church records for Maja from Sweden say "dead in America 1882". No death record either on the state level or at the court house. Now comes her sister,my Aunt Sophia Pettersdotter in 1885 as Sophia Peterson to marry Pete Johnson. They have Leonard b. 1886,Richard b. 1888,and Conrad b. 1890. Richard died in WWI. His name is on the marker outside the library. Sophie is listed as a widow in the 1891/1892 EauClaire city directory. So we assume Peter Johnson died 1890/1891. No record. She marries Oluf Svenson/Swanson 20 Dec 1894. They have Holgar b. 1895,Clarence b. 1896,Carl b. 1898,& Rufus b. 1900. The Swansons had a photography studio in Eau Claire for years. I can find no death or burial records for either Peter Johnson or Maja Gretta Johnson. They should have been buried in the Swedish cemetery or there should have been something in the newspaper. I have spent hours at the library and in the courthouse. Any suggestions welcome.

From the newspaper Reform, Eau Claire, 19 Oct 1909 (trans): Mr. Thomas Severson died Saturday morning at Sacred Heart Hospital at the age of 63 years. He underwent an operation but this, unfortunately, could not save him. Severson lived at 938 Water St. and was one of the most well-known Norwegians in the colony of first rate Gudbrandsdalers which we have here in the city. He is descended from the Eidsvold's man P. Harildstad and was in possession of his Danish medal (Dannebrogskors) which he had received for bravery in the war. Old Severson was a most intelligent man and his knowledge of Norwegian history, for example, was fully disconcerting, when one kept in mind that it was an old logger that stood before you. Dr. Halfdan Koht visited the old man when he was here in the city and was surprised that such an old man could have such a knowledge of historical events. He came here to the city in 1882 and had lived here since. He leaves a widow and four children: Randi, Syver, Paul and Inga. The funeral will take place this afternoon from the house of mourning, 938 Water St. (the poster is not related.

Abel Hanson

From the newspaper Reform, Eau Claire, 9 Aug 1910 (trans.): One of our pioneers wanders away. Thursday evening about 8 o'clock Abel Hanson died in his home on S. Dewey St. after having been sick a couple of months. Waterfoot(?) set in and death came soon after. Old Abel Hanson died, it is thought, without great pain. He had all of his mental powers right to the end and was thankful for everything his willing daughters did for him. When he didn't have the strength to talk any more he gave thanks with his fine, good smile. Mr. Abel Hanson came here to the city in 1857 and was perhaps the oldest Norwegian pioneer here in the city. (Mr. Lund, who is now at the Luther Hospital, came the same year as Hanson). Nils Hanson, Abel's brother, was here already as early as 1852. The first Norwegian settlers here in the city were from Bærum in Norway. On their heels came the Gudbrandsdalers. The Hanson brothers, Abel, Lars and Nils, belonged to the Bærum iron works together with Lars and Jens Anderson. Lars came here in 1854 and settled in Pleasant Valley and Albertville, Jens settled in Shawtown. Abel Hanson and the brother Lars came first to Waupun and from there they left by driving. Hans Ludvigsen, also from Bærum, should drive them. But when he came to New Lisbon after having driven for 3 days, he gave up and returned home. The two brothers then had to travel further with a breaking-team (oxen). Old Hanson had forgotten much that had happened since, but the first trip to Eau Claire he never forgot. There was no bridge over the Eau Claire River. There was a little sawmill where Northwestern's torn-down sawmill is now located and where McDonough's shops stand there was at that time two log houses where the workers stayed. Hanson cast his first vote for Lincoln in 1860 here in the city. He was a smith by profession and moved then out to Albertville, where there was a considerable Norwegian settlement already in the 60's. There he was well-known, not alone for his ability, but also for his friendliness. As far back as we can remember he has been an ardent temperance man and prohibitionist. When age and health drove him out of the smithy, he moved to his daugter's here in the city, and they took good care of him. His daughter feels that there was competition to see who could do the most for him. "I have it so good, so good," he would say when we sometimes suggested that his daughters spoiled him. He was a faithful old-fashioned Christian who thought God did all for the best. When he only had his cup of coffee and his pipe, and saw his old friend Jacob Arnesen, who was also a fellow Bærum's man, and so much spryer, so he could help him both bodily and spiritually, then he was happy and amused and it brightened him along the way. We will come to miss old Hanson, who we have learned to cherish. One by one fall away the old pioneers. With them in the grave go hard work, want, disappointment, that the near family only can perceive. Mr. Hanson leaves a son, who lives in Washington, and four daughters of which Mrs Helmer Hanson and Miss Anna Hanson live here in the city. One daughter lives in California and one in Washington. The funeral will take place Wednesday at 2 o'clock in the afternoon from the house of mourning, 1240 S. Dewey St. and from the Westside Church at 2:30.
From Reform 16 Aug 1910: Abel Hanson's funeral took place Wednesday afternoon with many people present. Many sibling's children took the opertunity to gather at the uncle's bier. Those present from Colfax a
