The archives at UW Stout have the naturalization records from the court in Dunn county. I would suggest starting there. If you're not near Menomonie, you can complete their research request form.

Many Norwegians came through Canada and crossed the border via train into the U.S. It depends on the time period. At any rate, if he was naturalized in 1870, your chances of finding immigration documentation aren't good, and even if you do, it very likely won't contain anything useful. That's not to say that you shouldn't look for it, but I would suggest exhausting other avenues first. Death certificates, obituaries, and Norwegian church records are good places to start. Many of the latter are on microfilm at UW Stout or can be sent from SLC to your local FHC. Confirmation records, in particular, list the church of baptism, so if you have any young teenagers from Norway, that may be all the information you need to connect back into Norwegian records.

PS. Vigen looks an awful lot like Weigen/Wegan. This is probably the name of a farm in Norway on which your family once lived.

Thanks to whomever you folks are who posted this information.
My paternal grandmother was Myrtle WEIGEN (as she spelled it) born in Dunn County Wisconsin in 1898. I searched for her parents under WEIGEN and found nothing. Today in desperation I put in the name of her one sibling I remember - Gerhard Weigen - and his information came back Gerhard WEGAN. All the other information fit so I assumed it was from my ancestry. One thing led to another and I discovered that Simon WEGAN was my great grandfather and eventually that led to Halvor who was naturalized in the United States on January 5, 1870. My quest has been to find out where my ancestors originated. Now I know all four sets ...Vigen Norway (not sure where that info came from but I'm glad you had it), Frosta Norway (dad's dad)....Zlotow Poland (mom's mom's side) and Mlada Boleslav Czech Republic (mom's dad's side). Do any of you have any idea from which port the WEGAN's sailed to the United States? My great grandpa Simon was born in norway in 1865 and Halvor was naturalized in Wisconsin in 1870 so that narrows it down a bit. Thanks much.

Hello and thank you! It does indeed look like you found Bertha's parent's names. I know that the information about Bertha in your first post matches everything I have about her. Bertha is my great grandmother. I am very excited to know her parents' names because I have been unable to find them. And it looks as if her father died in the U.S., which I would not have known. My dad, who is 89, knows nothing about his grandparents, Albert Scherf and Bertha Brinkman, so I have been trying to find out about them. Thank you so much for helping me.

Julia Estler Tibbits was a half sister to my ggrandfather Linus Sylvester Nichols. Their mother was Janette Tubbs. She first married a Hagadorn, then George Nichols in 1857, then a Beaumia, and then Estler...Charles? I will do this in detail tomorrow when I have a chance to look at my records. She has a ggranddaughter living...maybe she to will see your post.

Francis Lorshbough obituary

Eau Claire Leader, page 6, Jan. 27, 1911

Pioneer Follows Wife to the Grave

(Dunn County News)

Francis Lorshbough was born in Sinnemahoning, Pa., Jan. 12, 1827. In June, 1849, he was united in marriage with Miss Matilda Smith, with whom he lived a little over 60 years. Three children were the fruit of this union, only one of whom, Mary Elizabeth, wife of H. F. Waldron of Menomonie, is still living.

For 51 years Mr. Lorshbough has been a resident of Dunn county, first at Lousiville, then at Red Cedar and for the last four years at Menomonie at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Waldron.

Just a year ago, on Mr. Lorshbough's 83d birthday, Jan. 12th, his beloved wife, after being confined to her bed but about a week, passed away at 22 minutes of 10 p.m. and last Thursday, Jan. 12, on his 84th birthday at 10:30 p.m., after a sickness of about a week, Mr. Lorshbough passed peacefully from the lonely home here on earth to meet the loved one in that better land.

When but a young man, Mr. Lorshbough united with the Methodist Episcopal church, of which he was a most faithful member. For a number of years he was class leader in the church at Louisville and he helped to build the present house of worship, not only paying a large amount on the expense of the building but helping to haul the lumber. For many years he was a Sunday school teacher at Red Cedar.

Besides his daughter, Mrs. Waldron, Mr. Lorshbough leaves one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Bedell, of Glenwood City and eleven grandchildren and three great grand children.

The funeral services were held at the Methodist church at Louisville, Sunday morning at 11:00 o'clock. Pastor H. H. Smith of the Baptist church of Menomonie, who a year ago officiated at the funeral of Mrs. Lorshbough, had charge and the body was placed by the side of that of his wife in the beautiful cemetery near the church.
Eau Claire Leader May 6, 1922, page 9
MRS. E. B. BUNDY LAID AT REST AT MENOMONIE
Was Pioneer Resident of Red Cedar
Valley; Mother of C. T. Bundy
MENOMONIE, Wis., May 5.—The
funeral of the late Mrs. E. B. Bundy
was held Thursday afternoon from
Grace church, the Rev. Arthur Dimmick
officiating. Burial was at Evergreen
cemetery.
Mrs. Bundy, who at the time of her
death was the earliest living settler
of the Red Cedar valley and with one
or two possible exceptions the earliest
surviving settler of the entire
valley of the Chippewa, died at her
home on Seventh street in this city
Tuesday of pneumonia after an illness
of eight days. Mrs. Bundy was
the widow of the late Judge Egbert
B. Bundy, who for twenty-two years
presided over the court of this Judicial
circuit.
Rubena Macauley was born in
Glasgow, Scotland, Dec. 29, 1840, the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William
Macauley. She came with her parents
to the United Slates when she
was about 2 years old, the family
settling near Galena, Ill. The father
having died, she came with her
mother, a brother, the late Judge Robert
Macauley, and a sister to Gilbert's
Mill as the settlement at the
mouth of Gilbert creek just southwest of
Menomonie was then known. This trip was made in November
1852, by steamboat on the Mississippi
river as far as the mouth of the
Chippewa, and thence by keel-boat
as far as they could go up the Chippewa
and Red Cedar. Another brother,
Thomas Macauley, had come
to Dunnville a year earlier. The
family remained at this little settlement
for a year or two. although j
Rubena returned to Galena to complete her education.
Married In 1861.
In either 1854 or 1855 the family
located on Thomas Macauley's farm
at Dunnville this property situated
on the west bank of the Red Cedar
river, being still known as the Macauley
farm. Rubena Macauley was
married in May, 1861, to Egbert B. Bundy,
who, in association with his
brother, Judge Charles S. Bundy,
now of Washington. D. C., had practiced
law at Dunnville, then the county
seat of Dunn county, and
who at the time of their marriage
was residing in Menomonie. The
wedding took place at Dunnville and
the young lawyer and his bride took
up their home in this city, beginning
their married life at the Vance house,
now the Perrault home at
Alain and Seventh streets. The first
home of their own was the old Bull
house, where the Jimerson home
now stands at 409 Wilson avenue.
Mrs. Bundy has lived in Menomonie
ever since her marriage with the
exception of about two years passed
in Wabasha, Durand and Dunnville.
Judge Bunday presided over the Circuit
court for twenty-two consecutive
years and died in this city in 1904.
Leaves Nine Children
Mrs. Bundy leaves nine children,
nineteen grand children and four
great grand children. It Is remarkable
that there has not been a death
in her own immediate family save
that of her husband. The children,
in the order of their ages, are as follows:
C. T. Bundy of Eau Claire; W. H. of Boston;
Robert E. of this city;
Mrs Lydia Blakeslee of Madison;
S. D.; Edward W. of Seattle, Wash.;
Mrs. Margaret Gray of this city;
Oliver T. of this city; Arthur M. of
Marysville, Cal., and Mrs. Nettie LeMay of Eau Claire.
Active In Church
Mrs. Bundy was very active in the
affairs of the Episcopal church ever
since Grace church, the local parish,
was formed in the very early 70's in
the Menomonie House hall, the
building which is now the Storl(? this name
was hard to read)
home on Crescent street. There has
been no more loyal or liberal parishoner
in Grace church than she, nor
one more loved by the members.
She was also a member of the Dunn County
Old Settlers' society and took a deep
interest in its activities.
While public spirited and charitable
she was of a very retiring disposition
and was affiliated with no
organizations other than the two
mentioned. A sweet, gentle and unselfish
character, her loss will be
most keenly felt by those who knew
her best.

This looks like mine, but Mary was not the daughter of Tom and Eleanour. She was from Painesville, Ohio and the daughter of Mary and William. I have a photo of her and she is the spitting image of my mother in law, so I believe the book has that bit wrong. When you say not related, you mean what? You are not related?

A
large number of friends and neighbors,
from Vernon, New Berlin, and
Waukesha were present at the funeral
to pay their last respects to their
old friend and neighbors.
****

also found that Ella Cummings died in Oregon in 1920.

you will also find John on find a grave go to:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=OD...;

ok searching a little more on newspaperarchive I did find this obit, which when I checked the census does seem to match as it shows Mary and John adopted a son- George L. Caine age 14 born in Kansas in the 1900 census.
Here is Johns obit:
Waukesha Freeman December 31, 1914, page 8
John M. Oddie
John M. Oddie, a former resident of
this county, died at his home in
Menomonie, Dunn county, December 22
aged 72 years. Funeral services
were held at his home in Menomonie
and his remains brought to Waukesha
county and interred in the R. P.
cemetery at Vernon. Funeral services
were conducted by Rev Dr.
Rogers of Carroll college. Mr. Oddie
took an active
interest in politics,
having held several town offices
and serving his district as assemblyman
in 1885. He leaves his widow
an adopted son, two sisters, Misses.
M. and E. Cumming, Vernon and
several nieces and nephews.

Thank you so much for taking time to help me. Unfortunatley, this is the wrong Olive. Funny that there would be two Olive's in this world that marry a Charles Hathaway. But my Olive was born in 1895 in Dunn County, Wisconsin. She died in 1952 in Superior Wisconsin and married Charles W Hathaway sometime around between 1910 and 1912. The list of children that I have does now include the names that are on the 1940 cencus. Thanks again for taking the time to help. I appreciate it a lot.

I did make a mistake in my query.. Olive's middle initial is an R (not a B as I listed)

Mason Damon/Damman b.1803 Maine & reported in Sheridan WI

22 Nov 2012 from Warren Forsythe
Genealogy121 (at) fairpoint.net
-
Page 94 of “Damon Family of Scituate, Mass.” by Richard A Damon Jr. and D. Bradford Damon
says nothing about spouse nor descendants for Mason Damon b. 1803 Fairfax Maine,
Even though lots of descendants are compiled there for his adjacent siblings:
John Damon born 1801, and Rebecca (Damon) Woodward born 1805.
For Mason Damon born 1803, page 94 of above genealogy says only
“#1786 Mason b. Fairfax [Maine] June 26, 1803; settled in Oshkosh, Wisc. (DBD)”
[the DBD refers to co-author D. B. Damon (1901-1992), meaning that Richard A Damon in 2000 reports DBD info., even though the surviving co-author found no confirmation about Oshkosh]
Indeed, 1830 is the last public record I, Forsythe, find that confirms Mason Damon b. 1803 had a wife and family: 1830 US census of Howland, Penobscot Co. Maine, Mason Dammon with aged 20-29 female, two males aged 20-29, male aged 0-4, female aged 10-14.
1840 us census
-
HOWEVER YESTERDAY --I, Forsythe, notice the following 1880 county history
-
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.damman/5/mb.ashx
-
Tells of a Nancy Damon/Damman born Apr 1830 in Maine (Penobscot[?now Piscataquis?] County)
She was on the Douglas/Douglass side, a 1st cousin once removed to her husband; so probably many of these Douglas/Damon kin migrated from Maine to Wisconsin about 1840-1842
-
From the “History of Dane County, Wisconsin-1880” there is a biographical sketch under the ‘Town of Dunn’ for J.F. Douglass, farmer, Sec.27; P.O. Stoughton; was born in Penobscot Co., Maine, in July, 1822, and in the autumn of 1840, he emigrated with his parents to Vermillion Co, IL; in July, 1842, they came to Dane Co., Wis., and located in the town of Rutland, and in 1845 removed to the town of Dunn, and settled on Sec. 14; three years later he bought and removed to this farm in Sec. 27; He now owns 160 acres of Secs. 22 and 27. Mr Douglass has been Town Treasurer one term, and a member of the Town Board two terms. He was married in the town of Rutland, Dane Co., Wis, in 1846, to Nancy Damman, a native of Penobscot Co, Maine, born in April 1830; their children are Robert A, who enlisted in the 8th W.V.I., February 1864 and died at Vicksburg, in June 1864; Jeremiah, who now lives in this town; Marilla, now the wife of William Hulse, who lives in Ohio; Margaret, now Mrs Albert Southerland, who lives in Fremont Co, Iowa; Orra A, now Mrs William Neye, and lives at Syrene, Dane Co, Wis; Cornelia, Mrs George Green, who lives in Nebraska; Carrie, Mason, Edward, Flora and John. Mr & Mrs Douglass are Free-Will Baptists.
-
SO WE SEARCHED FOR RECORDS OF WIFE&KIDS FOR MASON DAMON born 1803:
www.familysearch.org , the Salt Lake Family History Library, cites vital records of Lee, Maine
-two ancestry.com public member trees tell a similar story, sometimes with slight documentation
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/10491922/person/-631002564?ss...=
and the less-credible undocumented assertion that Mason d.1891 Sheridan,Dunn Co.,WI at
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/26013157/person/5001175934?ss...=
-
SO NOW WE POST DESCENDANTS OF SABRINA & MASON DAMON at
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&d...
-
Best to look there to see documentation and updates, but 22 nov 2012 initially it said:
Descendant Register, Generation No. 1
________________________________________
1.
I do find a link with Tom Oas, who was also listed as a boarder in 1900. Tom Oas appears in earlier censuses with his wife and children.

Are you familiar with www.findagrave.com - you can find Anna Dahl buried here with a death date of June 17, 1952.
If you click on the name of the cemetery, below where it says burial, you can search for all others who are buried there (note, there is no guarantee all people buried there are in this list)
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=da...;

You might consider putting a request for an obit look up for Anna on the Dunn County message board, that should list her children. The cemetery link has some biographical information, but only lists her children by Ever Dahl.

Thank you very much again. I have not found the obits earlier.
However I am not sure if Charles Oas is connected to the Aas/Oas/Toreson family. He is a boarder by Ever and Anna in 1900, but I have not been able to find any connection to this family. Is it just a coinsident with the same name, or is it something I do not see ?

Best regards Inger

Here is an obituary for Ever Dahl Jr. It is from this site
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~widunn/obitindx.htm

Ever A. Dahl, Jr.
August 1982
Submitted by Carol Severson
Funeral services for Ever A. Dahl, Jr., 75, Rt. 6, Menomonie, are 1:30 p.m., August 12, at the Christ Lutheran Church in Menomonie, with Rev. Hilmar Mostul officiating.
Interment is in the Halverson Cemetery. Visitation is 4-9 p.m., Wednesday, 9-11 p.m. Thursday, and at the Church one hour before services. Dahl died August 9 at the Dunn County Health Care Center.

Born Sept. 14, 1906, in the Town of Sherman, Dunn County, Dahl, the son of Ever and Anna Hanson Dahl, was raised in the Menomonie area. He served in the Army in WWII, then worked as maintenance engineer at Memorial Hospital for 22 years, retiring about 10 years ago.

He is survived by two brothers, John Dahl of Menomonie, Alvin Dahl, Bloomer; his sister, Agnes (Mrs. William) Watland, Rt. 3 Menomonie; and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements by the Olson Funeral Home.

Also, this looks like your Charley Thoreson Oas - it matches the birth for an Oas born in Dunn County.

CHARLES OAS was born 06 March 1886, got Social Security number 393-09-7262 (indicating Wisconsin,) and died December 1964. Unfortunately, it doesn't say what city he died in in the index

If I have the right Charley Oas, this is his daughter
http://www.leadertelegram.com/people/obituaries/article_62fb...
