SMITH, JOHNSTON

My great, grandmother, Rachel SMITH, married Joseph JOHNSTON in Pa. in about 1853. They came to Dunn Co. between 1868 and 1870. They settled south of Downsville on the east side of the river. The 1877 map shows that there were 16 SMITHS in a nine mile square area of them. Some of these people must have been Rachel's brothers or uncles. Maybe all were kin. About half of the SMITHS on the Dunn Co obit list are related to me by marriage. I would love to hear from any SMITH or in-laws. If you're a SMITH, you must be a BROSTROM or a PETTERSON or a FAGERLIND or a JOHNSTON or a JOHNSON or a TAYLOR or a KRUMRIE. If you have any family buried in Riverview, I would be interested in sorting us out. Many thanks, Gene
I am looking for any photos or information on the Morton Hill area of Eau Galle Township, WI. Also the Farm Hill area, although I think that may be in Pierce County. My family lived there during the years 1880-1965 and I would like to know the history of that area. They also taught at those schools, which I am told are long gone. It would be nice to see what they looked like. Thank you

Hello, I ran acrross you e mail address by surfing. My question is I have ancestrors who are in the Evergreen cemetery in Dunn County. I have found the names and the dates and they are in Section 24. There are other names (Christianson) in the same section. Does that infer they are related or just in the same section. There is no sub set for the section as I can see and was looking for a Plot number to differentiate those in the same section. Thanks for any insight.

KIndly respond to my e mail address. Bbokken@aol.com

TIA, Bob
Downsville to Have Brass Band - June 1923

Downsville to Have Brass Band--First Rehearsal Tuesday Night 82 Members: Edes is Director
With twenty-two of its thirty two members present and Earl L. Edes on the director’s stand, Downsville’s new band held its first rehearsal Tuesday evening. With the remaining instruments to be delivered this week, it is expected that all of the members of the organization will be present at the next rehearsal Monday evening.
Miss Mabelle Smith and Miss Janet Jensen put the Downsville band in a class by itself as the only one having women members in the territory. It is expected that others will follow the lead of the pioneers.
Practically none of the members have had playing experience and all are starting on the same footing, but the first attempts gave promise of success. The members are as follows:
Solo cornet--Clarence Massee, Paul Stevens, Grant Stevens, Curtis Solie.
First cornet—Leon Turner and Ole Norb.
Second cornet—Ole Anderson.
Baritone—Fred Born.
Drums—Ellet Holvberg: bass, Orin Holvberg: snare.
Trombone--Knute Creaser, Elmer Herman, Edward Herman, Chester Peterson, Adolph Netzelman.
Bass—Ole Quorn: E flat: Louis Herman and Jesse Ryder: B flat bass.
Saxophones—Raymond Bylander, Stanley Born, Vern Cantrell, Oliver Neverdahl, Wilbert Steves, Miss Mabelle Smith, Harry Dix.
Clarinets—Henry Roth, Harry Fredman, Archie Shafer, Howard Laughlin, Ernest Roth, Rev. W.H. Tompson, Miss Janet Jensen.
Alto—Walter Flick, Walter Kunz.
Source: www.Ancestry.com Database: Eau Claire Leader (Eau Claire, Wisconsin), Menomonie Department C.M. According to the Social Security Death Index, she was born Aug. 19, 1888 (Place?), and died Feb. 1972 in Wheeler, WI., Dunn County. Her maiden name is possibly Slamp or Glasnap (there's been some confusion due to mispelling or typo on her sons birth cert.)She had a first husband named John Henry Gossard who was shot by a hunter in Wisconsin (place?). She had a second marriage to an Unknown Gallaty. Please help!! If anyone knows anything that could feel in the gaps, please email me!!!! Thanks.

I am looking for someone with a copy of the 1925 History of Dunn County Wisconsin who would be willing to copy several pages and send them to me. I found out that pages 393 - 395 all pertain to the HALFHIDE family. I believe the patriarch of this line is the brother to the patriarch of my husband's line. I believe they came to the U.S. about the same time and would like to read the history of this line. Thank you!

From the newspaper Reform, Eau Claire, 13 Apr 1920 (trans.):
Mr. Lars Broberg, one of the most known and respected farmers down by Caryville, died after having been sick about a year. He was at his death 64 years old. He was born in Skjaak, Gudbrandsdalen and came here about 37 years ago. His wife--born Margrethe Lund (Skrøen) together with 9 children survive him,--The daughters Mrs. J. J. Shaker, Schuyler, Alberta, Mrs. Edw. Shaker, Meridean, Mrs A. O. Johnston and Mrs. A. Lane both live in Minneapolis, in addition to Laura Broberg who is at home. Of the sons Peder and John in Schuyler, Alberta, while Siver and Oscar are at home. The former runs the farm. The funeral took place Sunday. Pastor Sumstad and Pastor McKenny spoke. The former presided. Lars Broberg was a friendly and sociable man, he surely left only friends in the area where his work fell for so many years. The funeral was one of the largest which has taken place in the countryside down there. He was buried in the Albany cemetery. (the poster is not related)

I'm a librarian in Ramsey County, MN. A customer wants to locate a copy of "Memories from the Ends of the Earth" by Rev. Elmer Ellingson, 1981, about his time in Alaska. Is this available at the county historical society, or elsewhere?
Thanks!

Did the Normal School have yearbooks? I believe Margaret Kathleen Gilmore attended the school probably sometime between 1912 and 1916. The family is interested in finding a picture of her, also any other information. Her teacher's certificate dated August 20, 1918, signed by Theresa A. Leinenkugel, stated Margaret Gilmore had taught 24 months.

My great grandfather Pleasant Worley Foster died in Prarie Farm wisconsin at his daughters home. He is buried in the Sioux Creek Cemetary near Dallas. He died in 1938 and that is all I know. Can anyone help me find an obituary or death certificate? I know nothing about him except that his parents names were Charles Foster and Agnes McPherson and I cannot find them either. Have no dates on them at all. I sure would like to find something out about this family for my mother. Pleasants wife Mary was killed in 1928 in a tornado near Prarie Farm. Think 2 other people died in that storm also. What I would like to find out is if he had any brothers or sisters.

Isaac and Sarah's daughter Matilda Jane Pownell was my great great grandmother.
Isaac and Sarah had 10 children according to my research. He then married a Sarah Hatfield in 1894. In one of the census it states that she had 12 children with 2 living..this to has been a road block for me.
According to our notes Matilda was married 3 times to 1. Isaac Carney in 1866 2. Eben Orr in 1872 then divorced (did they have a daughter named Anna together??)
3. Christian Charles Gobel in 1885 (my line)
Any information for Isaac and Sarah and their other children would help as I have hit a dead end with these families.
Does anyone have information on Uylsses Pownell's wife Elizabeth Biss?
Help with Cemetery in Dunn County?

I have a death certificate for Susan A. Gardner who died 28 Oct 1894 in Knapp, Dunn County. It states only that she is buried at a ..."cemetery East of Knapp, Wis...". I know this is pretty vague, but would anyone be able to help me with a cemetery name or location? I would appreciate it greatly as it may lead me to her husband John's gravesite as well. Thank you.

LS

From the Reform newspaper, Eau Claire, 27 July 1897 (trans.): Mrs. Waage, Pastor Waage's wife in Sand Creek, died Sunday night after two months illness. She leaves three children, of which the oldest is 3 1/2 years old. Last year she was operated on for cancer of the breast, and then it was thought she would survive. She was, non-the-less completely cured of this disease. Although the doctors do not know, with certainty, the cause of death, it is likely a nerve condition of one kind or another hastened her death. The funeral will take place Wednesday. Pastor Preus is traveling up there. (the poster is not related)

Ferdinand Mortensen / Morton Christopherson

Transcribed from the History of Dunn County (1925) p. 310 .......
Ferdinand Mortensen, who has filled various roles in life, including that of former sheriff of Dunn County, and who resides in the village of Colfax, was born in Westraalen, Norway, June 15, 1866, son of Morton Christopherson and Hannah Lokkes. In 1881 the father came to the United States to begin the establishment of a new home, and was followed by the mother and children in the following year. Settling in Dunn Co, Wis, they resided for some 4 years in the town of Sand Creek and then moved to the vicinity of Hayward in Sawyer Co., where for the rest of his life Morton Christopherson followed his trade, which was that of carpenter. Both he and his wife spent their last days at the home of their son Ferdinand in the town of Sand Creek, Dunn Co., Mrs. Christopherson dying in 1900 and he in 1912.

Ferdinand Mortnesen, who, after the Scandinavian custom, took for his surname his father's given name, with the addition of "sen" (or son) attended public school in Norway until 15 years old and in 1882 came with his mother to America. After the family had settled on the farm in the town of Sand Creek, he attended English school for 3 months and for several years thereafter worked for various people. He then went to the Pacific coast, where he remained seven years, residing at different times in the states of California, Oregon and Washington, or at least made his headquarters there, for during 3 years of that time he followed the occupation of a sailor and received a mate's papers. But on account of his health, at the end of that time he returned east to Hibbing, MN where he remained for a year doing carpenter work. He also visited other parts of Minnesota and northern Wisconsin. In 1897 he returned to Dunn County and bought a farm of 80 acres in Section 10, town of Sand Creek. It was practically all wild land an he proceeded to develop it into a farm, improving and cultivating the land and erecting a house, barn and other buildings which work he continued without interruption until the fall of 1912. He was by that time well known throughout the county, and having achieved considerable popularity, he ran for the office of sheriff and was elected, in the spring of 1913 moving to Menomonie and assuming the duties of the office. After serving the regular term of two years, he returned to his farm, but in the fall of 1916 he was again elected sheriff and served another term. He then bought a residence in the village of Colfax, where he and his wife are still residing. When he first came to the village he engaged in a mercantile business which included the handling of machinery. It later become the Co-operative store, which closed out business in 1922. Since the summer of 1923 Mr. Mortenesen has served as road patrolman and while living in the town of Sand Creek he served 11 years as school treasurer, the same length of time as justice of the peace and 13 years as town clerk, and for six years was a member of the asylum board. In the spring of 1923 he was elected a member of (cont.)

p. 311 ....
the village board of Colfax, and is still serving. It will be seen that Mr. Mortensen's career has been one of varied activities. He has seen a large expanse of country and tried his fortune in various places, but the scenes of his youthful days possessed an attraction for him that finally caused his return to them and he has since identified himself closely with the interests of his town and county.

He belongs to several societies, including the Odd Fellows, Knights of Phythias, Modern Woodmen of America, and Sons of Norway. On Nov. 9, 1896 Mr. Mortensen was united in marriage with Anna Danielson, who was born in Helgeland, Norway, June 29, 1873 and who came to this country in 1892. To Mr. and Mrs. Mortensen six children have been born: Hannah, on Jan. 7, 1898; Dagmar, March 2, 1900; Alex, Oct. 15, 1907; Arnold, March 6, 1912; Frances, Sept. 6, 1914; and Emily, born Sept. 15, 1918. Hannah is now a stenographer in the Union Bonding Co's office at Washington, DC; Dagmar is the wife of Henry Quale of Minneapolis and Alex is a barber in Colfax. The Mortensen family are connected religiously with the Norwegian Lutheran Church.

[Note: The transcriber has no relationship to this family.]
Edeberg / Edenberg / Eideburg Family

I am researching the Edeberg family of Menomonie, specifically the decendants of John Edeberg b ca1847 Luxembourg/Sweden and his wife Sara b Nov 1842 in Sweden, arrived Wisconsin 1865.

John and Sara's son William John Edeberg b 24 Aug 1876 died 3 Feb 1960 lived in Menomonie. He married 19 Apr 1897 Edith Knoble b Dec 1877 in Wisconsin, parents names unknown (though we have photos of her father). The Knobles were from Germany.

We've been having problems researching this family as there many variant spellings of the surname Edeberg. For example we are unable to find this family in the 1880 census index even though they appear in the 1870 and 1900 census.

William John Edeberg's daughter Gertrude Edeberg McKenzie of Regina Sask. was my husband's grandmother.

We would like to make contact with anyone researching this family.
Thanks.

I am new to researching family history and have almost nothing on my mothers family. Her parents are the couple listed above. Since the passing of my mother and father I have became interested in putting this together for the children in my family and my siblings families. So anything you may be able to share would be greatly appreciated as I have very few people to ask. They did own quite a bit of land in Dunn County so I would imagine there should be something however I can never find anything. Even directions to where I might be able to search more sites would be helpful.
