J.A. HOWE, FORMER SUPERIORITE, DIES

John A. Howe, 54, Superiorite, who rose to be a leader in the bituminous coal industry, died in Passavant Hospital in Chicago Tuesday night after a two-week illness, according to an Associated Press dispatch.

Howe was well-known to Superiorites, among whom he spent his early youth. He attended the old Blaine High School, graduating in 1906. He was a charter member of the now-extinct Happy Home club, composed of young men of the town.

After working for the Pittsburgh and Carnegie Coal companies here, he left when he was 22 years old to work for the Carnegie company in Minneapolis. There he rose to the presidency of the corporation. In 1931 he joined Truax-Traer coal company as its executive vice president.

He was a leading representative of the bituminous coal mine operators at congressional hearings preceding passage of legislation in 1937 giving government supervision of the industry. He helped organize Appalachian Coals, Inc., a marketing agency for eastern coal producers, and Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., serving the whole industry.

Survivors include the widow, Myrtle; two daughters, Mrs. Frances Eidsvold of Minneapolis and Mrs. Dorothy Farrell of Chicago and a son, John Jr., of Evanston, Ill.
