Assistance with Dodge County Cemetery Photos

I live in Southern California and would like to find someone to help me with some cemetery photos in Calamus and Randolph in Dodge County. I have four generations in Randolph (father to a set of 2-great grandparents). I suspect that a pair of 3-great and 2-great gandparents are in Calamus, but will need to verify. As I live outside LA, and haven't been in Wisconsin since 1991, I figure I need someone local to take the necessary photos. I will be happy to pay for time, postage, etc.

Thanks in advance for your assistance,
David Jones

Families: Jones, Williams, Roberts, Edwards

POW/MIA Korean War Dodge Co., ALBERT

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Dodge County, Wisconsin as his home of record.

Soldier: DOALD OTTO ALBERT
Born: 1929
Date of loss: August 30, 1951 MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 36 families from Wisconsin that have not been located. There are one family from Dodge County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (78 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
as a little kid I lived about 4 houses from the main gate of the prison on Madison street,in Waupun, Dodge county, I remember the inmates went on a riot where they broke windows and set their matress on fire, it was in the middle of the winter and very cold, people would line up against the wall only to be chased away by the city police. I would like to know what year that was, does any one have an idea.

Dodge County Pionier, Thursday, 23 August 1888, page 8
(translated from German)

During the night of Friday to Saturday last week at 1 o'clock in the morning, Mr. Carl Griepentrog died at his home in Town Hubbard after only four days illness. The deceased was never ill during his entire life and, until four days before his death, still working industriously on his land, whereby he caught a bad cold, which led to his death. He leaves behind a son by the name of August Griepentrog and four daughters, who are all married; from the eldest to the youngest, to the Misters Gustav Pautsch, Wilhelm Weber, Paul Klawitter and Wilhelm Wollmuth. The funeral was held Monday morning; Mr. Pastor Holst gave the eulogy. He rests in peace. The survivors have our sympathy.

My great, great, grandfather and mother John and Catherine SMITH lived in Burnett, Dodge County, WI in the 1860 census. It states the post office is Beaver Dam. Assuming that is where they lived, can anyone tell me the name(s)of the Catholic Churches in existance at that time there? I see from various threads it may have been St. Patrick's. I believe my greatgrandfather and several siblings may have been baptized there from 1853-1860. I am looking for Joseph, Rosilla (sp), Henry, Franklin and George SMITH. The bottom line is I need their mother's maiden name and am hoping to find it in Sacramental Records. If someone has access to those, I would deeply appreciate a look-up. I will re-imburse time, copying, postage, etc.

I believe that her father was Michael Galligan, born in Ireland about 1829. Her mother was Sara, born in Boston about 1838. Siblings were JOhn, Mary, james, Patrick, Ann, Michael, Stephen Elizabeth, Alice.

What makes this confusing is that sometimes the name is misspelled in Census Records as Gallagher----but I'm sure that they are the same people becuase of the names/ages of the parents & children.
7/25/99 Am looking for information on the family of my greatgrandmother Catherine Miller (??Mueller). She was born 5 March 1850 in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Her parents are said to be John George Miller and Susanna Sherrill (??Rosin). She married on 26 November 1866 at Clyman, Wisconsin, Nicholas Mutziger, who emigrated from Alsace Lorraine in 1856. He shipped out from Havre, France, on the John G. Coster, arriving at New Orleans, Louisiana, on 26 December 1856. According to family lore, he went first to the D'Hanis, Texas, area, where already emigrated sisters lived and ran cotton across the Mexican border during the War Between the States. Later he went to Wisconsin (??more relatives), married Catherine Miller. My grandfather George John Mutziger was born 22 or 26 March 1873 at Lowell, Wisconsin. Nicholas and Catherine Miller Mutziger and their children moved to South Dakota in the 1880s and homesteaded out from Ethan, S.D. He died there 8 July 1905; she on 1 February 1928. Thanks for any help with the Miller, Sherrill (?Rosin) line. Will be happy to share info.

Henry Dow Wood was born Jan 2, 1836 in Franklin, PA and died Oct. 12, 1864 near Atlanta, GA. He was the son of Beder Wood Sr. (1805-1882) and Sarah Fletcher (1812-1880). His siblings included Beder J., George Pitt, Abner, Adelaide Wood Hawkins Ide, Sarah Wood Davis Hawn, Hannah Wood Wing and David Wilmot.

We visited the Neosho Historical Society a few years back and heard a reference to someone who had visited the cemetery in Neosho, WI where brothers Henry Dow and Abner Wood are buried. The people were possibly from MN or MI and had Henry Dow Wood’s Civil War Journal. We would love to connect with these people if possible to share information about the family.

Both Henry Dow and Abner were killed during the Civil War. They both enlisted in the WI 3rd Infantry, Co. A. Henry later re-enlisted as a Veteran in the IL 34th.

Thank you!!
Church record extractions for German Protestant Immigrants in SE Wisconsin

There is a new research tool available for those genealogists looking for their Germanic ancestors who immigrated to SE Wisconsin. A new book has been published (the 5th in a series) titled:

"German Immigrants in American Church Records: Vol. 5 Wisconsin Southeast Protestant"

This volume is a compilation of extracted names from church records in SE Wisconsin. It is not an extraction of every church record. It does not include any individuals born in America. It is an extraction of only those immigrants born in Germanic areas.

Of note, it includes an extraction of immigrant individuals in the records from Trinity Lutheran church in Freistadt - who's records are not available to the general public except by contacting the church directly. Also, it lacks any Lutheran churches in the city of Milwaukee (St. Luke's in South Milwaukee is the exception).

The book does not include every Protestant church in SE Wisconsin, the churches included are:

Brookfield: German Evangelical Lutheran Church
Burlington: Cross Lutheran Church
Cedarburg: Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Advent
Colgate: St. Paul's United Evangelical Protestant Church
Durham: Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church
East Troy: St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church
Elkhorn: St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church
Farmington: Fillmore Reformed Church
Fillmore: St. Martin's Evangelical and Reformed Church
Fox Point: St. John's Lutheran Church
Franklin: St. Paul's German Evangelical Lutheran Church
Freistadt: Trinity Lutheran Church
Grafton: St. John's Lutheran Church
Granville: St. Peter's Lutheran Church
Greenfield: St. Johannes Evangelical Lutheran Church
Hales Corners: Emanuel Evangelical Church
Hartford: Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church
Hartford: Zion's Evangelical LUtheran Church
Kirchhayn-Jackson: David Star Evangelical LUtheran Church
Lake Geneva: First Evangelical LUtheran Church
Lannon: St. Johannis Evangelical Lutheran Church
Lisbon Twp.: Zion's Evangelical Lutheran Church
Menomonee Falls: St. Paul's United Church of Christ
Merton: St. John's United Church of Christ
Mequon: Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church
Muskego Twp.: St. Paulus Evangelical Lutheran Church
New Berlin: German Evangelical and Reformed Church
North Prairie: St. John's Lutheran Church
Oak Creek: St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church
Oconomowoc: Zion's Episcopal Church
Paris Twp.: Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church
Pewaukee: Salem Reformed Church
Polk Twp.: St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church
Saukville: St. Peter's Evangelical Church
Slades Corner: St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church
Slinger: St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church
Slinger: St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church
South Milwaukee: St. Luke's Evangelical LUtheran Church
South Milwaukee and Cudahy: Methodist Episcopal Church
Wales: Bethlehem Lutheran Church
Waubeka: St. Paul's Community Church
Waukesha: First German Reformed Church
Waukesha: Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church
Waukesha: Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church
Wauwatosa: St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Church
Wauwatosa: Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church
West Bend: German Methodist Episcopal Church
West Bend: Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church

A description of the organization that put the books together (and where to purchase the book) can be found at: (and by-the-way, I have no connection to the printing company or the organization that compiled these books.)

http://webpub.byu.net/rm222/GermanPage.htm

I am going to see if I can obtain a copy of the book through the inter-libraby loan program at my local pubic library.

For a more detailed description of what the book series includes see the following article on the volume 1 book:

http://webpub.byu.net/rm222/ARTICLEFORHOYT.doc

Tom
I have a couple of Weston ancestors for whom there are no death certificates filed (George Joseph Weston d. 1860 and Ernestina Weston d. 1886-87). I am going to try searching local Dodge County newspapers for obituaries. However, if I'm reading the info on the Wisconsin Historical Society website correctly, they charge a $15-20 fee for each interlibrary loan title! Yikes! Beaver Dam Library does not lend these on interlibrary loan (I called and asked).

Does anyone have advice on which papers to start with for people living in Lomira in these time periods? I'm starting to think it would be cheaper just to fly to Wisconsin for research!

Any info about the extended Brose family in Beaver Dam?

Hello,
I am researching the branch of my German family (Brose) that immigrated to Beaver Dam in 1873. I will post all the info I have here and would be very grateful for any further additions! Some of this I found out from grave photos generously posted on findagrave.com. They were all from the Oakwood Cemetery.

John Frederick Brose (*5-2-1849 Brietzig, Kr.Pyritz, Pommerania as Johann Friedrich Brose,+11-18-1918 in Beaver Dam)
came to the US in 1873
married
Johanna Louise Rieman (or Bremann?) on 9-17-1875
she was born in 1853, died in 1925
there is also some conflicting info about him marrying Louise Marsch ?

their 1st son: Charles T. Brose (*1878, +? Sp.Am.War Vet.)
married Soophia Kiser on 1-29-1917
she was born in 1883, died in 1963
they had a daughter Louise M. (*1917, +1928)

John and Johanna had possibly a daughter: Marie Brose (*1882, +1882)

their 2nd son: Arthur Brose (*1883, +1954)

and possibly another daughter? I'm pretty sure about the person, just not sure if she is their daughter:
Ella Knaup (born Brose?): *1886, +1970 (Oakwood Cemetery)
married to Clarence Knaup: *1-14-1888, +May 1969 (Oakwood Cemetery)

I have a large fraction of the German side of the tree attached to John Frederick and would be willing to exchange information.

Regards,
Petra Merkel

My aunt, Shirley Van Buren, passed away suddenly seven years ago. She was working on our Dodge Co. family tree, and among her records (of which I now have copies) are numerous obits which do not seem to have connection to our family, and also letters from several people I don't know (no addresses given!). She knew many, many people in the Dodge Co. area and may have been collecting some of this for others. The first six surnames listed are in our tree for sure, the others are the questionable surnames, but I also have obits from people with our family names who are not relatives. Please contact me if this is familiar.

Thomas T. Williams residing at Calamus, Dodge Co., married Elizabeth Williams, daughter of John and Catherine Williams. Elizabeth's residence is listed as Elba. They were married at Elba, Dodge Co. 23 July 1862 by John (?) Roberts, Minister of the Gospel. I believe this family was non-conformist in Wales but cannot find a record of Elizabeth's birth there. Can anyone help in sending addresses of possible churches that John Roberts would have been a minister at? What churches were at Elba in 1862?

Have Photo of Sarah Clason from Beaver Dam - will send to descendant

While researching my Clason (Classon) family from Wisconsin, I ran across a woman who had rescued an old photo in Oregon of a Sarah Clason. I thought it might be my Sarah, but once I saw the location of the photographer on the back of the photo -- Beaver Dam -- I knew she wasn't my Sarah Clason.

I can't tell what year the photo is from, but it's an old one. If I had to guess, I'd say it's probably from the late 1800s. The photographer is Luther Moulton. She signed the back of the photo in pencil: "Yours, Sarah Clason."

She looks young, so my guess is that Sarah Clason is her maiden name, not her married name.

I'd like to get this photo to a descendant if I can.

Jeanette

The John BUCHMUELLER/BUCKMILLER family resided in Beaver Dam Ward II, when the 1860 census was taken. We are looking for more information on this family than was available in the census. Catherine, the wife, was Catherine CAPPELE before her marriage in the 1850's. We think that she is the sister of the woman, who we are researching, Louise CAPPELE KAUTZ. They were both born in Germany in the old Prussian empire. If you are a descendant of Catherine, perhaps you have more information and can help us with this problem. Thank you for any help that you can give us.

My mother-in-law was (Bertha) Doris (Krueger)Westover. I am married to her son Randy George Westover. Her husband was Harry Adolphus Westover. Randy's grandparents were Robert James Westover and Minnie (Braatz) Westover. I believe that Minnie is Anna's sister. Her father is Herman Braatz and her mother is Louise (Oelke)Braatz. Robert and Minnie are also buried in Randolph Cemetery. Any info on Minnie would be great. I have her born in 1885 in Germany and died in 1956. They were married on March 6, 1907 in Green Lake,Co.,WI. I have a sisters listed for Minnie: Anna Braatz b. Nov. 1890 in Michigan and OLga Meta Braatz b. 9-19-1893 and a brother William Braatz b. April 1889 in Michigan. I would appreciate some info if these are her siblings

Looking for information on Benjamin Sears (b)@1816-1823 Lower Canada. He came to Dodge County from Ontario sometime between 1861 and 1870 - a widower with a daughter Zylphia (Ann)who was born @1853. I have nothing on her after 1870 census. Benjamin is in the 1870 and 1880 censuses of Fox Lake. I am assuming he died at Fox Lake sometime after 1880, but I am not finding a cemetery listing for him. I do not know if he owned land or not, but he was a farmer. He likely had a sister Thirza. Related families were Gilbert and Bunker. Any information appreciated. Thanks.

Mary Ann Eddy, age 73 was living with her daughter Jane Eddy Frink and Rev. Hiram Frink on the 1850 census in Wauwatosa. Does anyone have access to cemetery inscription indexes for this area? Mary Ann does not appear on the 1860 census for Koshkonong, Jefferson where Rev. Hiram Frink was living. She may be buried in a cemetery in the Summit, Waukesha or Milwaukee area. Rev. Frink served at several churches throughout Dodge, Jefferson, Dane Counties and eventually settled in Burnett, Dodge County. Hiram and Jane are buried at the Burnett Cemetery there. I am hoping to locate Mary Ann's death date from her stone or from a newspaper notice. She was born abt. 1777 and died before 1860.

Looking for information on:
William ‘Will’ Sherman Cox was born about 1858 in Jefferson County, Wisconsin and he died July 25, 1930 in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin of a heart attack at the age of 72 years. He married Clarissa ‘Clara’ M. Warren who was born in June 1862 in Wisconsin and she died about 1920 in Horicon, Dodge County, Wisconsin at the age of 58; they were married on May 10, 1884 in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. They had 3 chn. His sister Emma Cox Wood was living with Will in Horicon, Dodge County, Wisconsin in 1920, so it is assumed that her husband George R. Wood had died before 1920, as Will’s wife Clara died that year. In 1920 William would have been 62 and sister Emma was 8-10 years older. Will then married Mrs. Emma Newell, a widow from Chicago, Cook County, Illinois on April 02, 1922. Any further information on this family is appreciated, lindajcox3@hotmail.com

Also My mother in law is related to Knispel's, Yaeck's and Petig's. Any connections out there.

Looking for information in 1855+ (i.e. Presbyterian Church, census, burial, etc.) for RITCHIE - Alexander, David, James who married in BEAVER DAM, DODGE COUNTY. They were brothers who came from Ireland (County Monaghan) in 1833 and originally settled in MADRID, ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, NEW YORK. They also ended up in KINMOUNT, PETERBOROUGH COUNTY, ONTARIO, CANADA in 1861, suspect travelled through Bruce Penninsula. I don't know where to start to look for them in Wisconsin records!!
One of my ancestors was Austin Graves (b1805 Chazy, NY) who came to LeRoy, WI in 1846 and lived there on a farm until his death in 1879. Several of his children moved to Racine (including my great grandfather), and some stayed in LeRoy or Dodge County area. I'm looking for any descendants, info, stories, photos related to this family. Thanks

Dodge County churches

Does anyone have a list of churches in Dodge County in the latter half of the 1800's - perhaps from a city directory? I am trying to find the church my ancestors attended (one side of the family is German - Sell - and the other English - Weston). I have not had any luck with what Lutheran records are available, but wasn't sure what other churches were around (and where their records might be). Maybe Anglican? Methodist? Baptist?

Could someone tell me the name of the church and cemetery mentioned in this obituary from the Juneau Tel 2 Apr 1897:
...funeral services were held...at the Lutheran church in this city, Rev. Hanser, of Horicon, her pastor... fficiating ...buried in family plot in the City Cemetery. Though the person died in Juneau, was Rev. Hanser the pastor of a church in Horicon and not Juneau? Thanks for any thoughts.
